Alpha Flag: Charlie - PDF Download (Patreon)

This chapter contains some of my favorite drawings of the Diver. Drawn from July 2011 - December 2011, it rounded out the first year of Alpha Flag, and I feel like it took about this long to figure out the visuals of the comic. Being my first longform comic, I was really learning a lot as I went, week to (every other) week, so the look morphed and stretched and snapped back kind of inconsistently in the preceding chapters, but by the time I was drawing this page, I had already figured out shots and angles and framing devices that I still use in Alpha Flag pages today. There's plenty of stuff I'd love to go back and redraw (mainly perspective, proportions and awkward faces), but one of my favorite things about webcomics is how they track the arc of an artist's growth. So perhaps they're more valuable left intact?

I also committed to shaving the Diver's face in the beginning of the chapter and boy did I regret it so hard, so instantly. He kind of looks excessively dweeby standing there with a clean face and nicely combed hair, listening to Charlie explain everything to him, so by the middle of the next chapter his hair's already a mess, and then by the beginning of the one after that the stubble is back.
