Hello my loves.

Greetings from a very chilly but beautiful day in upstate New York.

I'm feeling....chilly and hot. Hot and cold. Deeply warm inside but with that "Winter is Coming" vibe. I'm steeling myself for a lot of change, and a lot of shows and work. The Dresden Dolls have a MARATHON coming up: 4 show sin 5 days is a heavy lift for both of us, so I'm trying (and often struggling) to get myself into peak physical and emotional shape for that. My songwriter is fighting with the mom for time. My domestic housecleaner-self is fighting with the person who wants to clean up the patreon, get to the unfinished projects, and clean out my inbox.

Israel and the war over there is weighing heavily on my mind, and my thoughts don't stray far from there for very long. I not only have a lot of people in my life with family over there...but part of this community is there. I've played multiple shows and done house parties in Tel Aviv. It's all kind of hard to imagine. Doing real life feels off-kilter.

I am sending this little prayer out to anyone over there who may need itL: I hope you are okay, I hope your families and friends are okay, I hope you are safe, or can get safe.

This community is here for you if you want to tell a story, share a problem, or ask for help. We are good at listening. But please don't start a political rant. I posted some good wishes to social media and was horrified (but not surprised, I suppose), by the amount of shit-slinging in all directions, I just had to stop reading.

Meanwhile:

Last night, I gathered with 50-60 patrons at our little venue for the second "Private Practice"...where I road-tested some of the new Dresden Dolls songs. I was exhausted and sloppy - Ash's dada has covid and so I've been schedule-knocked on my ass all week with unexpected kiddo times - but it was joyous. It was a patron only show... and there were patrons from ALL over the globe: New Zealand, Canada, Ohio...some people came all the way from Florida and Maryland.

The new songs are...I dunno what they are. Everybody else will have to tell you. But I played them, as well as I could, and I took some questions and told some stories. It felt like a beautiful little family. I felt held. Fragile. Weird. Tired. But like...I'm doing my job. I talked a lot about Nick Cave, one of my songwriting/life/art heroes who I saw on Saturday night. We've met before, and I have a deep relationship with his work. It was a good reminder...in so many ways. I have more to say about and share about that...and I will tonight on the webcast. It deserves its own post.

Above is Sarah, ALL THE WAY FROM DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND. She didn't travel all the way from Aoteraoa for the show...but she still traveled 3 hours to come.

Here is last night's setlist...complete with working titles. Brian (Viglione), the drummer for the dolls, lands in NY today and we start arranging all of these songs for the band, We'll be playing most of them at the upcoming shows (in NYC, and in California).

Ampersand (from Who Killed Amanda Palmer)

The Bed Song (from Theatre is Evil)

Houdini (new)

Whakenewha (new)

The Truth (new)

Another Christmas (new-ish)

The Time has Come (by request - old old dolls song that we may rework)

The Runner (new)

The Nail (new)

People ain’t no good (Nick Cave cover)

I've written a lot of new "The" songs, it appears.

The new material is so fucking good. It's also so sad. I suppose I don't really have much control over that. I've at least decided to accept that.

Said it last night, saying it again: The Runner is stunning. Hit me deeply from several different angles as well as being lyrically and musically just gorgeous. For me, one of your most beautiful songs ever. Thanks for giving so much of yourself despite your exhaustion last night. It was a wonderful evening. Looking forward to coming to another one of these and of course looking forward to this Sunday around the piano with Lance! ☺️
