HELLO LOVES!

How the hell are you?

Enjoy the view ;) It has a hidden boob, like where's waldo.

Greetings from the TED conference in Vancouver Canada, where I'm getting settled in a little hotel room above the conference center and about to sit in a dark room for five days to watch 80 TED talks. Yep...80.

FUCKING ... EIGHTY. This is, I think, my 7th time at TED.

BUT...(and you may have just caught me saying this live, naked with a towel on my head on Instagram or Facebook) I HAVE BECOME INSPIRED this year to do a post about all of my take-aways and learnings from TED as a LEGIT PIECE OF REPORTAGE HERE ON THE  PATREON, for YOU, instead of writing them all down on 20 pages of a notebook that will go in a drawer and get read by NOBODY.

So, prepare!!! My THING this month - besides the live-streamed fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank this Wednesday, is going to be a REPORT FROM TED. Learnings. Ideas. Growings. The thematic poetry. You're gonna love it.

I cannot wait to create this for you, actually, it's going to be a hoot. It'll give my brain a happy place to go to while I'm sitting there for five days, listening to some of the smartest people in the world talk about their art, creations, ideas, and work.

Wish me luck.

The conference starts in a few hours.

Some of the TED speakers/guests this year include Krista Tippet, (from "On Being"), the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, and GRIMES, who's gonna talk about AI. COME ON. What a weird group.

I mean...it's gonna be deep, and there's also always surprise guests.

SO GET EXCITED.

JASON WEBLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - musician (and .... my sister)

In the Spring of 1998 Jason Webley quit his day job, picked up his accordion, and hopped onto a Greyhound bus with the intention of playing in the streets until his money ran out. Over twenty years, five albums and over a dozen countries later, Webley is still rambling across state lines and howling at the tomato moon. Along the way, Webley has garnered devoted fans everywhere from Moscow to Mexico City.

Webley appears like a back alley prophet in layers of baggy clothes, a trench coat and an old porkpie hat; he leaps onto stages, window ledges and bartops, feverishly pumping the bellows and stomping out the beat while roaring and whispering in his passionate, gravelly baritone. His music – a mix of gypsy, folk and punk – traverses age and social background, drawing grandparents, children, punks, drunks, and lovers into the fold. As a Seattle Weekly critic observed, "sixteen-year-old Goths, parents with little kids, aging hippies and fellow musicians – all can be seen at his concerts."

AND NOW....

Some beautiful pictures from the show on Saturday in Tacoma, WA:

And THE PATRON GATHERING!!!!!

Here's a set of photos, mostly by Michael, of the truly beautiful gathering for patrons @ the WW Seymour Conservatory in Tacoma the Sunday morning after the show at the Temple Theater (which was also incredible …. if you have any good show photos, tag me, we didn’t have a photographer at the show, it’s all you).

I am learning how to tell the truth.

To share more about what’s going on. I’ve held onto so much for so many years, in silence. It feels like breathing after being choked.

I miss this about touring. We all needed this. We talked about everything under the sun, but we spent a long time talking about guns, America, what’s up in the Pac Northwest, our experiences of sad sing-a-longs, and I spoke at length about what’s going on with me, my life situation, the year ahead, the questions, the ideas.

I love this. I goddamn love my patrons. Even though I love playing a show for a thousand people, I love just sitting around and shooting the shit with my community, getting to really see people, and sharing what is truly on my mind and in my heart.

Everyone has dealt with so much crap and trauma…especially lately. This kind of gathering is important medicine.

Side note: this almost didn’t happen. It was all because of ONE PATRON - Julie Samms - who texted me two days before this happened to ask if there was going to a patron gathering.

I admitted I’d wanted to do one but just didn’t have the energy to pull one together, and she volunteered to organize it. After all these years, I still can’t believe how much my community supports and carries me along.

Julie, my god, thank you. This wouldn’t have happened without you. We all really needed it. Thank you, thank you.

To you patrons: I have no words. Thank you. To my listeners and readers: please join the patreon. It’s so important, and so no much fun, and it is, honestly, really the best and most sustainable way you can support my work.

I WISH WE HAD A BETTER WAY OF SHARING PHOTOS WITHIN THIS POST. Patreon has been promising to make it possible soon. Keep praying.

Meanwhile, send them to me by tagging me in on FB or IG.

Love it! Can’t wait to see you in Poughkeepsie!

I feel like I'm taking too many turns, but you probably don't have time to read this post anymore so maybe it doesn't matter too much. My brother joined me in Tacoma with a very vague memory of having heard Coin Operated Boy in middle school. He had a blast and has since listened to each of your and the DD albums about 4 times each. Just bought himself a ukelele. XD

Julie Steele

Still not home yet from Tacoma but I’ll definitely compile any photos I took that look any good and tag you when I get back! 🙂 I LOVED your concert last Saturday! Wonderful set and many wonderful fellow fans to say hello to. 💜 I brought my cousin. He’s not familiar with you but he had a great time and wants more now. I think I had 3 hours of sleep before meeting a friend for the patreon meetup. He’s admittedly not a patron (yet) since he wasn’t familiar with your work. But he had an AMAZING time and loved it to his own surprise. I think you have a new fan. Thank you for being so kind to me, Amanda, and showing me so much love in the moments we shared after the meetup. (I kept those happy tears for the rest of the day) I haven’t felt this good since pre Covid. 💜 Lastly, thank you for accepting my letter. It meant so much to me. -Julie

If Julie Samms is reading this. I’m the Julie that said hello on Sunday to you. (Thanks again) I should’ve asked if you want to be FB pals. I’m Karma Steele on FB and Insta if you are interested 💜

Excited to hear your take on TED. What a Rad idea for a thing!

I’m so excited for the Vancouver show. It’s been a week from hell I’m ovulating and I’m ready to cry in public watching other people tell stories.

Howard DiNatale

I almost didn't make it to Tacoma but I loved the show and signed up for Patreon before I left the theater. It took a full day to process everything that the New Zealand songs stirred up (self reflection is healthy). I'm glad that I made the trip and met the awesome folks in this fan community. Looking forward to the TedTalk live stream.

Jessica Fassett

Is there going to be a patron gathering before the Boston show? I wanted to get your autograph again and this time get it tattooed on me on Sunday. I am working on an afp/dd sleeve!
