hello loves
TIMELY WARNING: if you tune into facebook within the hour, we (ahem, we the dresden dolls, yes) are gonna stream a little rehearsal live. we're gonna hop over to periscope after that.
i'm on a food break....just a very quick missive from the dresden dolls rehearsal cave, while brian sharpens his sticks. shit is sound INCREDIBLE. for those of you who are going to be at these shows, i envy you. i wish i could watch. unfortunately, i have to be on stage. but seriously...it's just as amazing as it always was. we've working on new songs (2!) and a handful of new arrangements and covers...it's all very exciting.
.....
SO...about six months ago michael mcquilken (who many of you may remeber as the drummer from the grand theft orchestra) apprached me and jason about writing a new batch of song-sketches for his musical, Jib.
backstory....mr michael mcquilken and i dated before i was with neil. when we were together, he had JUST gotten accepted, on a full scholarship to the Yale School of Drama, for directing, which is a big fucking deal, it's one of the best theater/directing programs in the world. his third-year project there (long after we'd broken up) was a play/musical called "Jib". jason webley, who'd introduced us originally (michael's from seattle, and was the touring drummer for jason for a few incarations of the touring jason webley band) was able to attend the actual stage premiere of "jib", but i was on tour at the time so had to settle for a video. what i saw really, really impressed me.
michael's theater is what made me fall in love with him (literally) in the fist place...i saw him, at edinburgh fringe on jason's advice, do a show that he wrote, directed, and starred in (AND wrote and recorded the music for) called "a day in dig nation" that was a gorgeous, searing social commentary about how isolated and disconnected the human race was. i was hooked. i was like: WHO IS THIS FUCKING GUY AND HOW CAN I MAKE ART WITH HIM?
fast forward a year and i didn't wind up making art with him...we had a meeting about doing something artistic and wound up making out instead. that ruined things for a while, as it always does... :D
the relationship failed, but after we'd broken up (pretty amiciably) and licked out wounds, we decided to give collaborating together on "theatre is evil", and it was a beautiful partnership...michael played drums on the record and killed it, and he was the art director for the tour (remember the video stuff? and "in my room"? and the giant crowdsurfing dress for "bottomfeeder"? that was me and michael applying our theater minds to the rock stage.
now michael's got his own theater company in new york and they're working on a new, hopefully off-broadway-bound version of "Jib", his passion project.
neither jason or i were nuts about the original songs for the show, and they're supposed to be in the singer-songwriter voice of the main character - a girl named Jib - who's....kind of like me. no comment there :)
anyway, to make a long story short, jasn and i locked ourselves in a room in upstate new york for the last week and change and wrote (and RECORDED!!!) 7 new songs...all sketches for what will hopefully be the next incarnation of Jib which is going to premier in philly this fall.
what YOU NEED TO KNOW:
i am going to "Thing" this EP of me-and-jason music no matter what happens to the play. you guys are gonna love it.
ALSO, michael is currently KICKSTARTING THE MUSICAL. you guys are already supporting me and my undertakings, but if you want to support michael in his creation i know he'd be over the moon, ESPECIALLY if you're a theater-head, and especially if you're in NEW YORK OR PHILLY, where you can actually be a part of the family putting on the show, and go, and meet them, and all that....
here's the kickstarter. do what you will.
