it’s another beautiful late summer day in aotearoa and i’m up stupid early getting the laundry folded and dishes done before ash wakes up and demands encanto and breakfast

i just watered the kale, which is coming along nicely.

WELCOME to a handful of new patrons - there’s about 100 new people who joined in the last day!! i assume y’all may have come through sam bee, and any friend of sam is our ally for life. welcome to the patreon! this is our wonderful little community and if you wanna introduce yourself in the comments, we would love to get to know you… maybe just wave and say where you’re from, why you signed up, how your life is going…we are here reading and we are not shy about The Feelings.

as you can see - there’s an appeal to donate to RAINN - a charity we have supported before. if you feel moved, a donation would be great. it’s standing at $300 right now and it’s just starting.

i love you all.

i’ll be back monday/tuesday with lots more to say, including finally finishing reading up and responding to the tiktok/town hall feedback post, and reading all your comments here.

aura’s documentary from this little library shoot should be done by then too, and we will be posting it up (it’s reallllly good!!! and i’m so glad we decided to make it last-minute).

have a great weekend, my loves.

everybody i know is fucking exhausted right now.

Len Tower! Hi, my dear friend! Will do! And EmVT: AFP’s “Judy Blume” is quite possibly the only one to directly reference an author and libraries and books. I’ll check it out and give your link a thorough spin, see what I can find. The only other song I know of that INDIRECTLY references books is the Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil,” which then again, only exists because Marianne Faithfull gave Jagger a copy of Mikhail Bulgakov’s “The Master and Margarita” in 1968…but of course, that’s not ver well publicized/known, is it? (Sigh) Women are oft behind (or rather, in the best sense, responsible) for the purported “great” feats of men. How’s THAT for “Gender Appropriation” on the Culture-War Table? ;p hahahahaha… Here’s a toast to ALL unsung heroes of Planet Earth! Xoxoxox.. Love you all!

Danielle Buie, my dear! May I congratulate you on “book banning can cause harm, or minimally, a vacuum wherein a balm for loneliness might otherwise be found.” You just gave me the “beautiful sentence” shivers. Please, please make that an official quote of yours, it’s BRILLIANT! Sorry, I DO genuinely get excited about deep, beautiful flourishes of prose! Love, Pedro B. Gorman

I forgot how much I loved this song. The video brings back memories of laying on the floor in the NYPL with everyone, listening to the record in the dark.

YES!!!! So good!

Stefanie Oepen

This is beautiful. Loved the song when I first heard it and it hasn't lost and of its power. I've never read any Judy Blume, not even sure how well she is known in Germany. It sure sounds like I should have though. I might get there yet.

Sally

As beautiful as ever.

I’m so happy and proud that as your patron, I helped make this video happen. 😘😘😘

Beautiful! I was too late for the vote, I'd have voted yes and I'm so glad to see this beautiful thing you made because of your art and because of patronage. It's a wonderful love song to Judy and full of your generous humanity.

EmVT

serious question: what kinds of places could this video be submitted to win an award somewhere--everything about it, the lighting, Amanda's performance, the song itself, the camera work, the location, etc, has to be award-worthy. I mean, it's so fucking great :)

Hiiii! I’ve been a patron of Amanda’s since I reunited with her (that’s my version of the story lol) where she appeared in Aotearoa during Splore in the middle of the pandemic and talked to her experience as a musician. I remembered my teenage and young woman hood, and how she symbolised every kind of grace I wanted to be. And here we are in the same land across the globe. It’s magic.
