Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

…….

by Willian Ernest Henley

Was just in my first ever car accident today. Literally almost got hit by a truck. Swerved, slid, hit a tree. Walked away from the wreck “unscathed”, but sore and existentially shaken.

I am the captain of my pain Tis the bit, the bridle The trashing cane The stirrup, the harness And the whipping mane The pickled eye And the shrinking brain Brother, buy me one more drink I'll explain the nature of my pain Yes, let me tell you once again I am the captain of my pain -Nick Cave, Brother my Cup is Empty

When I was in Grade 7 we did this poem. I memorised it then and I still remember most of it. I sometimes say it to myself. Seeing this now makes me emotional. It's been such a rough couple of weeks. My person and I decided that if we want to save our relationship and be in each others lives again one day, in any capacity, we have to take time apart to heal and forgive. It's the hardest thing we've both ever had to do. But I'm proud of us. We are the masters of our fates. We are the captains of our souls.

Thank you. I needed that!

This made me curious about Henley's life experiences. The Victorians could be so dramatic, I thought, Ok, Ernest, did you write this after you dropped your jam tart jam-side down? Nope. Henley had tuberculosis in his bones (I didn't know that was a thing) and was the inspiration for Long John Silver. Amazing, impressive guy. <3 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Ernest_Henley

This is one of my all-time favourite poems, a hymn to strength.

This! Thank you! It has been written in my journal. So timely, poignant, and perfect for the darkness that is (sadly) ever present in these modern moments. There is an inner stillness deep within our souls that protects and keeps aglow the Eternal Flame of Love (I call it the "Eye of the I") That is what this poem bears to mind. ❤️

I was looking for art that could remind people of their strength, and you posted this. I sent it to my friend in Ukraine. I think it helped, even if only a little bit.
