hola my loves.

it's THING #11. and my proudest Thing to date. i'm so happy right now.

the link that takes you to the project page - where you can listen on bandcamp read the whole long story - is at the bottom of this.

the beautiful photo you see is by allan amato, and it's the official cover image for the the song.

i stayed up til almost 5 am in the morning, austin time, writing the whole background to this song, and i hope you read before listening...or after listening if you wanna go in cold. trust me: it will make the song better.

jherek and i were talking about the stories of the songs, and how we live in this strange world where the songs mostly just stand for themselves. but i think that the story, the backstory, is almost as important as the song itself - it tells you what you're listening to. it's the wine with the food, or the 3D glasses for the movie. i'm too tired to get clever. please, just read it before you listen. the song will still be good if you don't, but anyway.

i'm alone here at thor's house, and there was a brutal lightening and thunderstorm last night while i wrote, the baby's first big storm, and all the dogs hid, and i like to think that all the weather that's affected this song isn't coincidental.

i think anthony's in it, wielding his machete and saying hello.

saying he loves us.

last night, a patron (janelle) tweeted me an image to point out to me that today, march 9th, is THE ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY OF PATREON.

dudes, i couldn't have planned this all better if i tried.

i'm breaking apart with gratitude and happiness and luckiness right now.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY US!!!!

WE ARE ONE!!!!

my son is sitting on a dog bed and we're listening to the light rain on the roof, i have a coffee that thor hand-ground which is propping me up after only three hours of sleep, and i have over 7,000 people who believe in my ability to make music so much that i could bring six musicians and three recording engineers into two sonic spaces and create something as magical as what you're about to hear.

too little sleep, folks.....i just cried writing that.

please know...what we are doing here is crazy, and special, and unprecedented, and i expect it's only going to get better and better. and better. and better.

if i can make THIS, what else can i make?

almost ready?

WHEN YOU SHARE, and oh my god do i need you to share this one, PLEASE USE THE BIT.LY we created!

/jherek and i were talking about the stories of the songs, and how we live in this strange world where the songs mostly just stand for themselves. but i think that the story, the backstory, is almost as important as the song itself - it tells you what you're listening to./ I totally agree - I love hearing the stories behind songs, and i LOVE that you shared them with both this piece (wonderful) and with "a mother's confession". for a while now i've been tossing around the idea of starting a lyrics wiki collecting links of interviews and stuff from the artists explaining the origin of the song, what the song means (I often google "[title] lyrics meaning" and am disappointed by the results - mostly fan analysis, not statements from the creator). i fantasize about interviewing artists, going down the list of their songs and asking for the story of each one. death of the author is a real thing, and an important thing, but I am more interested in the life of the author, the voice of the author. intent does matter. maybe i will make that wiki, and start with these. :)

Not a fan of the beginning--but love the rest of of the song. I read the "read first" post last night and listened to the song literally first thing this morning (an *interesting* choice for 8AM): given that I've read The Art of Asking, I don't know if it made a difference, but Amanda, yes, Amanda! "Oof" moments: "i have never liked the box of knives / you said was a paradox because you’re kind / but withstood a childhood that robbed you blind / of love that was safe and so you learned to fight": like Anthony, I, too, have experienced abuse (though it was in my last year of university, in '13 - 14), and: "i have never liked the box of knives / i took it to the oceanside the day you died / i stood out on the dock / no matter how hard i tried / i couldn’t drop them in / and i collapsed and cried:" wow. Just, wow. Powerful.

You are saving me from the pit tonight. Thank you.

I just listened to Machete for the third time: I think the beginning of the song is finally growing on me--and the rest of it whacked me over the head just now as I focused on the lyrics and what they mean.

As if it were needed, "Machete" serves as proof that motherhood has not dulled your artistry, but has only added new brilliance. Work like this reminds me of why I am a patron. Thank you, Amanda.

still weeping after a dozen of listens

I love you woman, and I love this song, and I love your story, and I love your wild emotions. I hope you've gotten some sleep since this. <3

Question for A-mother-FP (and anyone else who can chime in on this): you've spoken/written at length about how Anthony first introduced you to mindfulness, meditation, Buddhism, all that good stuff. After years of attempting to treat my depression and anxiety with medication, I've finally found a therapist who is giving me a new set of tools in the form of mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques. Book recommendations, anyone? I know this is the way I want to go, but I'm not sure where to start.

Fifth time listening...still get goosebumps. Damn, Amanda. Thank you.

Can anything be done to add wee margins to the sides of the blog about the song? The letters slam into the sides of the page and it's really difficult to read, especially with no capitalization. I feel frustrated trying to support and understand and at the same time feeling like I'm struggling to read the message. Sorry to complain, obviously still a patron.

I kind of came back to Patreon just for this. <3
