Hallo loves.

Welcome to DECEMBER. It's gonna be a weird month - I'll be writing a lot to you about what's ahead. Things are....changing. I have news. Thoughts. Plans. All changing for the better, I hope. I have a lot to say to you.

Thank you for being here, first of all. Thank you for your patronage. The holidays are gonna be...well.....weird. Everyone I know is just barely hanging on. I'm hanging on and...okay. Everything feels unreal.

Even putting this podcast out feels unreal. But also, this particular episode with Storm is well-timed. We talk about getting through your shittiest moments, alive.

NEXT WEEK'S GUEST on The Art of Asking Everything Podcast is writer and podcaster TIM FERRISS.

That one's gonna be amazing, too.

QUICK ONE: I will be chatting with last week's podcast guest, KT Tunstall on Instagram live TOMORROW (instea of crwodcast, we're throwing shit to the wall to see what sticks), at 4:30pm ET New York time).

Make sure you're following me @amandapalmer to tune in. Barring any unforeseen tech issues with IG, the conversation will be saved and archived on my IGTV profile tab for those who can't watch live. As far as a conversation with Storm Large goes...we'll set something up...does anyone here have any strong preferences between instagram, facebook, crowdcast...bueller? Bueller?

The crowdcasts have been patron-only and really nice, with an average of about 100 people attending, and yet I'm not sure anyone is going back and watching the archives, and they sort of get lost. The Instagram is public, so it'll attract a lot more views, but it won't have the cosy family-feel. Maybe it just depends on the guest...

Anyway. Try to tune into the KT one tomorrow. It'll be amazing. She and I talked each other's ears off the other week on the phone for about an hour and I kept saying "WAIT! WAIT! DON'T TALK ABOUT THAT! SAVE IT FOR THE INTERNET!!"....espeically the stuff about dealing with the internet, people, fans, community, patrons...it's gonna be gold. KT is one smart cookie. And if you missed her episode, it's here.

......

Thank you to everyone who's rating and reviewing the podcast. It's helping!

........

OK, NOW TO STORM....

This one, I love.

It's Storm Large.

She is one of the least afraid people I've ever met.

Storm. Large.

That's her real name. Really.

Let me introduce you. She's my friend from Portland, Oregon.

Some of you may know her as the singer from Pink Martini, some of you may know her from her excruciatingly honest memoir "Crazy Enough" (a fast a read I cannot recommend enough, see below - it's about life, drugs, self-love, crazy mothers and the crawl out of the insanity-box).

Or you may just be meeting her for the first time.

If you are just meeting her for the first time, you are lucky. Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas and Happy Anniversary To Your True Fucking Self all wrapped up in one.

I met Storm through our mutual friend, Meow Meow, and recently stayed at her house in Portland - with part of my touring crew - while I was on the There Will Be No Intermission tour. I was only there for about 5 days, but I learned all I needed to know. I read her book, I went to see her in a read-through of her one-woman show of the same name, and I saw a SISTER.

here's what I posted on the website for this episode:

If you want a mainline injection of self-love, balls-out hilarity and basic life inspiration, look no further. Singer/writer Storm Large is one of the most unapologetic and liberated human beings I have ever had the pleasure of talking to.

She is forceful but full of compassion and heart, she’s opinionated, loud and indomitable, and she knows how to wield the magic tools of art and stage performance to chase away demons. She’s a hero to me. This is also possibly the absolute FUNNIEST conversation I’ve ever had. Really. Pee first!

her main bio:

Born in Southborough, MA, Storm graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York before moving to San Francisco and later to Portland, which she now calls home. Storm is the co-lead vocalist for the band Pink Martini along with China Forbes. Her band, Storm and the Balls, has toured the world, playing mash-up covers of rock hits of the ’70s and ’80s.In 2006, she appeared as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: SupernovaHer musical one-woman show, Crazy Enough, premiered to rave reviews in 2009 and spawned her autobiography of the same name in 2012.

In 2014, her band, Le Bonheur, released a self-titled album of classics from the American Songbook.

Storm and I TALKED REAL TALK....and I remeber leaving the recording studio feeling like I'd found a lost family member.

We talked about growing up in Massachusetts, the isolating horrors of writing a book, our shared obsession with Madonna's life choices, our imposter syndromes.... and parallel parking as a feminist statement.

And so much more.

Here we are, in love.

Here are some boobs Storm drew while we were talking.

Storm LOVES HER BOOBS. SO MUCH.

PODCAST BOOKCLUB

here is the thread!!!

https://forum.theshadowbox.net/t/storm-larges-memoir-crazy-enough/6289

and here's what i wrote there to kick it off:

hallo loves.
this is a GOOD ONE. a REALLY GOOD ONE.
i devoured this book over two days on tour, right before i interviewed storm for the podcast…which was, hands down, the most electrifying yes-yes-yes episodes of the lot.
if you grew up with a difficult parent, this book is for you.
if you liked “girl, interrupted” or that sort of genre, this book is that book on crack.
storm’s humor is awe-inspiring. her self-love is so relieving. her knowledge of self, after everything she’s been though, is such a fucking breath of fresh air.
trust me and read this one. it’s a quickie, too.
for the book club discussion here…i think we can just kick it off with sharings of storm’s memoirs that remind us of parts a of ourselves, especially the armor we build around ourselves if a parents is mentally ill. and how we make peace…
much to discuss. i love you all.

Since you asked: I do not use Facebook or Instagram (under common ownership) now. Their corporate conduct has been reprehensible, to put it diplomatically. It's not quite at the "it's 1937, and I don't support the National Socialist program, but this camera is really nice..." level, but I want nothing to do with that corporation. At all.

Clamsplain is my new favourite word now. Never heard it before 🤩

Personal preference of Crowdcast. I like to hook up my laptop to the TV screen during chats rather than holding and staring at a tiny touchscreen for an hour. (Even my desktop buffers like crazy when I try to watch IG live videos on it; for some reason I only have moderate success with the mobile app.) It could also be hard to meaningfully engage in the chat box given how much larger the audience might become. And of course, all the ethical reasons IG/FB suck. If I miss a live podcast-related webcast due to schedule, I do watch the archive.

I love how excited & curious you are in conversations, Amanda. Really glad you started this project!

Catherine Cantin

I've definitely been watching each conversation post-podcast through the crowdcast archive. I'm not on instagram and definitely have no interest in being more on facebook. I'd be sad if I couldn't listen in anymore!

She is fucking amazing I had no idea she even existed. I am so glad but between k t and this give my heart a rest

Another long-time patron chiming in to please not publish the chat *exclusively* on IG. I co-manage an IG account for a non-profit, but am sticking with my decision to not use it personally, for some of the reasons already stated by others. I understand, though, that you have a lot of fans on IG. Can't you simulcast it on, say, YouTube, like you did your concert at Hawke's Bay? For that one I started out on crowdcast, where I really enjoyed hanging out with your other patrons, but after half an hour (it was still the pre-show), I had to switch to YouTube because it was just too buggy.

Storm is awesome!! So glad you could perform together.

Difficult Parents? Definitely gonna read it! I’m over them now, but could have used a survival manual in my teens!!!! Brilliant!

Storm's going to be here in the bay area at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga in February! Tiny ~300 person venue. https://my.montalvoarts.org/1670/1702
