hallo loves.

TIME TO RRRIOT.

quick and up front: THIS WEEK’S PATRON-ONLY CROWDCAST FOLLOW-UP LIVE CHAT/Q&A with ME and NADYA is scheduled for this WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11th starting at 8pm ET new york time! PLEASE COME!!!!

RSVP here and start leaving questions:

https://www.crowdcast.io/e/aoae-ep7

(you'll need to log into patreon to access this webcast as it's patron-only).

as always.....the live cast /Q&A will be recorded and you can view the archive recording at the same link above, any time after the live stream ends.

the follow-up chat last week with leslie salmon jones last week was so good and so calming and healing, she lead us through a mini-meditation and it was just....beautiful.

thanks to everyone who tuned in (here's the link to watch the archive for anyone who missed it: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/aoae-ep6).

......AND NOW......

it's TIME

this week's podcast is a slight aberration. we were going to initially release all of the pre-covid tour conversations (all recorded before feb 2020) and THEN start getting into the groove of podcasting live and up-to-the-minute. but given the election, and given that Nadya Tolokonnikova from Pussy Riot wanted to have a yarn....it just didn't make sense not to put this conversation - which we had a few weeks ago - out NOW.

it's funny. someone on twitter just re-surfaced this picture i took almost exactly four years ago (it was december 29th or so, 2016).

i was at the woodford festival in australia when i said this at a press conference, then doubled down on it in a tweet and with this picture:

and, well....four years on, is it true?

hm.

i mean....the last four years - just in my little art-bubble alone, have spawned THIS:

and THIS:

and, most significantly for this podcast, THIS:

so.....DID WE MAKE PUNK GREAT AGAIN?

i dunno. i think if you ask me and nadya, we'd say we did.

and if you wanna try to fight us, GO AHEAD.

JUST TRY.

if you aren't familiar with the work and history of pussy riot, may i suggest you do a little research before listening to the podcast, so you're aware of the context.

one of the things that still astounds me, especially as i flail here in my little bubble and mother-hole, is that my work with the "art of asking" still resounds beyond my reach and i occasionally bump into people who decided to give crowdfunding a whack because they saw my TED talk or read the book. i never imagined that pussy riot would be amongst those touched, but talking to nadya, it turns out to be true.

it makes me hopeful, still.

one of the things that i was going to focus on (ahem) diuring my RELAXING TIME OFF FROM TOUR this past april was rolling my sleeves up and shouting to the world that patronage is an INCREDIBLE TOOL for musicians, activists, feminists, and especially MOTHERS who do not have time to do the dog and pony show in front of the bunch of dudes who Run The System.

You Know This. I Know This. but talking to nadya reminded me.

there are better and new ways of making art, and we are JUST starting to find them.

espeically given the pandemic....it is time.

so please....support her on patreon.

............

now....to the PODCAST.

as i wrote for my website:

Nadya Tolokonnikova is not fucking around.

A member of the anarchist feminist group Pussy Riot, she was convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" after a performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012, and sentenced to two years imprisonment. She was 23 years old.

Her unapologetic art, activism and outspoken opinions about the state of the world have defined her as one of the leading voices in the new feminist freedom fight.

She published a book in 2018 called Read and Riot: A Pussy Riot Guide to Activism.

We caught up over over zoom - I was in New Zealand and she called in from an undisclosed location - and talked about everything under the sun from insecurity, keeping our heads together, and what punk means in 2020.

PATRON BOOK CLUB!!!

here's the book up for discussion...

head over here to the patreon book club thread to start discussing!!!

as i posted there....

i am excited as fuck for this one. i’ll pop on back by with the actual podcast when it comes out tomorrow, but for now, here’s the thread to get us started on Nadya’s book, READ AND RIOT. if you have a budding feminist in your life, especially if he or she is an artist, this is a great xmas gift...
for seasoned professionals, some of this info may feel basic, but it’s perfect for a teen or 20s beginner who is aching to get get their voice out into the world. i found it a fast and refreshing reminder to be shameless and bold…tell me what ya think.

Wow. That was such an excellent conversation. Thank you for asking such great questions x

I'm so glad you promoted the Pussy Riot patreon, it really is perfect way to support the work. I too was shocked that thousands of people hadn't immediately run to support her/them in this way. Can't wait for the new book!

Gudrun

I found this message really moving on twitter. It is not punk but roots nonetheless: VoteForJustice ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 @AnnAnnChe The Navajo Nation flipped AZ. They cast 76K votes, at 97% for Biden. He is currently ahead by 16,985 votes. Some of them spent 2 hours on horseback getting to the polls.

Good morning! The transcript section is the one from the last podcast and missing! Thank you!!

Thoroughly enjoying these conversations where you riff off each other's thought process & life experiences. It feels like a relative pain-measuring experiment to offset what differentiates us. A safe middle but no less challenging ground to explore the complex narratives we lose & find ourselves in. Beautiful work as always ♥️

Hayley Rosenblum

The URL is correct, but unfortunately there was an issue with the hyperlink (As you noticed it pointed to the previous podcast post), that has been fixed, and the transcript has been uploaded. thanks.

Love the interview. Joining her Patreon now.

It would be very interesting to listen, as a Russian, I was witnessing the court process and all the madness back in Moscow in 2012. And before I only got news and articles or interviews in Russian. It will be rad to listen in English now too. Thank you so much!

Wow 🤩 I need a dedicated time 2 digest ⏱

Fuck yea! Such good timing in my life as I'm trying to find my musician self again.

Make art based on today’s need for change, regardless of the current US administration. This interview proves that art extends border. Punk sown during droughts of angst reaps a harvest of activism in the proceeding angsty years. Life is cyclical. Art is cyclical.

Yes indeed, I listened in while running, but found it a little hard to stay in concentration. It's a great listen & I will listen to it again.
