TL;DR: 

🔥-the first recording, "beds are burning" (originally by midnight oil) from the bushfire charity record is OUT. missy higgins sings it with me AND SHE'S INCREDIBLE. brian viglione, my brother-in-dresden-dolls, is on the drums (!!!!!) and also KILLS IT. listen to it here on bandcamp.

🔥-the whole album will drop this FRIDAY (australian time) and ALL PATRONS will be emailed a download link. you'll all get it anyway, but please uncap your pledges if you want to make sure you're paying for it - all the money is going to firesticks, an indigenious led charity teaching people about cultural burning and land management.

greetings from a cafe in adelaide. i was up LATE last night doing one of my possibly-most-favorite-ninja-gigs of all time....and i am, i must say, hungover. NO PROBLEM. I CAN STILL PUT OUT A RECORD. WATCH ME. my friendly barista at seoul sisters, jaimee, who is now my best friend because i've been coming here every day just made me a hangover cure: pure espresso with sugar. let's see if it works. my excitement about pressing post on this will probably also help.

HERE WE GO. IT BEGINS.....!!!!

i have been talking about this project since it toppled into being a few weeks ago, and today i am proud to UNVEIL THE WHOLE TRACK LIST AND LIST OF ARTISTS!...though you won't be able to LISTEN to the whole shebang until FRIDAY.  

we are doing what they call, ahem "dropping the single": "beds are burning", featuring missy higgins on vocals, brian viglione (of THE DRESDEN DOLLS, MOFO) on drums, and jherek bischoff on bass and guitar.

it. sounds....INCREDIBLY FUCKING AWESOME.

so much more than it was supposed to be. it started out with piano, and just me singing. then i asked missy, and she said yes. then brian, and he said yes. then jherek...and now, HOLY SHIT, IT SOUNDS LIKE A BAND THAT WAS MEANT TO BE.

the entire album is coming out on friday morning - australia time - so i'll "Thing" it then and pay all the profits forward to the charity. 

some of you with capped pledges have asked how to pay for the record when the paid post comes out. you can change your pledge cap before friday to add one more paid post, then after the album drops and the paid-post for it comes out, you can edit your patreon account to go back to your capped pledges.

patreon lets you set a monthly maximum pledge, you can limit your contribution to my patreon to only pay for 1 Thing a month for instance, even if i release 2 paid posts, you only pay for 1 but get access to everything i put out. i encourage you to set a pledge cap, so you always stay within your budget, no matter how many pieces of art i release each month. i like it this way.

i was about to go visit my old friend sarah beetson on her partner chad's farm, right outside brisbane on mount tamborine...and she put her hand up immediately to make something. 

sarah just became an australian citizen, and the fires have been close to the farm. it's been scary. it all hit close to home for her. 

i am in awe of her ability to work as fast as we did...

we assumed there would be some demand for this amazing print...so we decided to just put some up for sale.

FUCK!!!! i can’t believe i pulled this whole thing off while touring. i mean i can. but i’m pretty goddamn proud of myself. i took almost every spare minute in melbourne i was hoping to get caught up on email (sorry everybody) and spent it on this recording.

i just saw someone on twitter say - re: the ninja gig last night - that i "dont' leave any gas in the tank". no, i do not. but i have co-pilots who drive with me all night. i am also so, so, so proud my team……especially jordan, hayley and michael who have been pulling double duty on the australian road and at their desks to get this out. 

they really deserve a huge round of applause this round.

and YOU ALL…..

let me just pat you patrons all on the collective back. 

if it hadn’t been for this patreon, and a ton of you waving your hands saying “what can we do to help australia?”, i wouldn’t have attacked this project. really. 

this one has been a 100% community undertaking and i am so deeply proud of what we just did…and how fast we did it. A WHOLE RECORD. a real record. real songs, real artwork, the whole nine yards. in under a few weeks from tip to tail. 

WOW.

that’s no mean feat, y’all. 

had i brought this idea to my old major label, it would have taken a minimum of 4 months to get it out into the world. shit just goes so slow when you're dealing with corporations and huge bureaucracies  and APPROVAL.

instead i have YOU.

no lie. i never would have had the audacity (or taken the financial risk) without you 15,000 having my back. you may be a $1 patron, or a $100 one, it doesn’t matter. your collective trust and efforts TURNED THIS IDEA INTO A REALITY. thank you, thank you, thank you.

i’ll have a lot more to say about it, and the people who dropped everything to make it happen, on friday when we let it out of the bag. 

but for now, a word just about miss missy higgins.

missy is the kind of artist i strive to be. humble, audaciously talented, and she’s managed to balance out being an activist, a recording artist and a mum with a kind of grace that i’m in awe of. 

she lives here in melbourne and we became friends three years ago when i invited her to do a live podcast show with me. we had a great deep-dive into work, motherhood and songwriting. (you can listen to it here: http://amandapalmer.net/afpandmissypodcast).

she was the first person who came to mind when i thought of adding collaborators to this flash-recording. she said yes without hesitating and a few days later, after i’d tracked the piano…there she was, slaughtering her vocal in less than five takes. watching her work - all steady, no ego - was one of the biggest thrills of this record.

she's just amazing. THANK YOU, MISSY.

it wasn’t until i considered the power of missy’s vocals that i started wondering the song wouldn’t sound better with DRUMS. so in a way: missy was the reason i got brian on board. and then brian tracked three more songs and WHEN YOU HEAR THEM, you will understand why i now cannot imagine this record sounding complete without him.
