if you missed the post today.....

NPR FIRST LISTEN

NPR Music an amazing partner who showed up on a steed last minute with an offer to share the album that i couldn't refuse - is "previewing" (streaming, in today's speak) the whole "There Will Be No Intermission" album as a "first listen" - which is when they share an album in its entirety one week before its public release.

YOU CAN GO LISTEN TO IT HERE.....

https://www.npr.org/2019/02/28/696715955/first-listen-amanda-palmer-there-will-be-no-intermission

YOU WILL ALL BE GETTING DOWNLOAD CODES TOMORROW.

MORE ALBUM EXTRAS AND ART WILL BE COMING YOUR WAY OVER THE COURSE OF THE MONTH.

if you're doing listening parties.....YOU MAY WANT TO WAIT BEFORE LISTENING!

i'll be sending ALL patrons a download TOMORROW, and in the coming days and weeks i'll be sending patrons some exclusive extras that no one else will have.

the backstory: i sent NPR music the record, and robin hilton, a co-host on the "All Songs Considered" radio show fell in love with "The Ride". he tweeted:

then it went up the chain of command, and NPR decided that the record was special enough to get the golden slot.

HOORAY!!!!

........

ZEE ALBUM LISTENING PARTIES

this is going to be SO AWESOME.

this isn't about "hearing the record first".

this is about "hearing the record together".

got me?

you still have time to list/host your own album listening parties and to RSVP to one happening near you. i realllllly want you to join/commune/be together and listen to the album with other patrons. each party is unique, and the hosts can invite other performers, artists and make it truly something special.....

read my post about it here:
https://www.patreon.com/posts/there-will-be-no-24673569

and join or host a listening party in your area by heading to http://artery.is/afp

i'll be sending all hosts a special link that has special pre-listening-experience messages from me before you hear the music. it'll be...good.

ME-HOSTED PARTIES

if you missed it....for more information on the listening parties i'm hosting myself next week, check out this post:

MARIA'S "FIGURING" BOOK LAUNCH

that's me and elizabeth gilbert (who wrote "eat, pray, love", "the signature of all things", "big magic", etc, and who also kindly read and blurbed "the art of asking" when i asked her to) and maria popova (aka the writer behind brainpickings.org) and neil at maria's book launch for her epic offering "figuring":

i've just started it and it's a GORGEOUS meditation on science, poetry, life, and the connections of all things. if you love maria's blog, this is like a feast for your soul.

you can read all about the book here....

https://www.brainpickings.org/figuring

and you can get it here......

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/602184/figuring-by-maria-popova/9781524748135/

neil read a poem he'd written about rachel carsen.

i played "bigger on the inside" at the launch and we all had a good cry.

------

I WENT AND DID SOME YOGA.

i'm not gonna not report on this. it's a huge important part of my life to sometimes get away for 48 hours and do some yoga and meditation every once in a while.

and usually i leave those events out of these althings because i'm like "eek, that's not work or interesting" and now i'm like FUCK THAT. it is all one.

i went to kripalu, in western mass. i did an immersive two-day retreat with the writer and teacher stephen cope, who's books on buddhism and yoga i've always loved.

i learned a fuck ton about myself.

i did a lot of yoga.

and over a breakfast of lonely kale one day, i broke down weeping while writing stage show notes on a napkin.

SEE?

i worked.

i didn't take any photos there.

i left my phone in a drawer.

but when i left, i stopped by a bookstore in stockbridge on the way home, and i took this:

so we did.

DO NOT FUCK WITH ME.

(above two photos by kyle cassidy)

..................

about a week and a half ago i did a webchat for $10+ webchat patrons

AND NOW

EVERYBODY CAN WATCH IT!!!!!

it was realllllllly funny.

the archive is now open to ALL patrons. you can stream it, here:

then we all headed to joe's pub in nyc....

here's soundcheck at night #1:

(above 3 photos by hayley rosenblum)

a second before taking stage:

then, on night two...

i broke a piano string playing (spoiler) "runs in the family" right before my story about breaking strings on my mother's steinway as a kid.

that's my tour manager and sound engineer chez stock coming to the rescue.

bye string.

i also broke a damper of an F# string at WNYC today, during "drowning in the sound".

i need a tattoo that says PIANO SLAYER.

joe's pub, night 2....

i kept working on the show.

MERCH!!!!

wanna know what i have recently spend a FUCK ton of this patreon money on?

MERCH COSTS.

because you have to print and pay for merch before you can sell it.
we've spent about $130,000 over the past month or so to make album, book and tour merch.

IT'S SO MUCH MONEY. HOLY SHIT.

just saying.

wow.

in GREAT news...it's looking fantastic.

the vinyl is ready, the CDs are ready, and i'll start posting pictures ASAP.

here's me, giving my FIRST COPY of the RECORD EVER to pascaline, a friend of mine who fed us in new york last night at her restaurant, racine's.

CHECK OUT THE BLUE BLUE DARK DARK BLUE BLUE OF THE VINYL!!!!!!

i gave her a patron-copy.

IT IS SO DEEPLY METAPHORICAL.

THE VINYL IS SO DARK YOU NEED A LIGHT TO SEE THROUGH IT.

GET IT??????

.........

i did "LIVE FROM HERE" w/ CHRIS THILE

it was crazy. i had a cold. i poured my soul out, we did band versions of "drowning in the sound" and "bigger on the inside" and i slaughtered "ukulele anthem", literally. slaughtered it with my voice knife.

and i talk lovingly about all of you.

you can watch the performance on youtube:
https://youtu.be/xJkvqp68jRU

or listen wherever you stream podcasts. links and more details at:

IN "HOO BOY HERE WE GO" NEWS:

i released "voicemail for jill" as the second single from the record. you can read the official thing post, here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/song-about-for-24809982.

and then...

the right wing people are starting to yell at me about my abortion song. but they are buried in love and compassion and stories from the hundreds of women and men who are coming out in full gratitude and relief that the song is so relatable. the universe is officially in balance.

.........

here's a sneaky plug for mr husband....

GOOD OMENS, the TV show he's been slaving on for three+ years (he co-wrote the book with terry pratchett, wrote the script, and was the full-time showrunner) is ALMOST READY TO COME OUT. here's the trailer. i think the actual premiere is in may....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZSXlNRRoGU

neil and i will be at SXSW doing both our things....he'll be there doing good omens promo and i'll be there pimping my sad happy sad happy record.

here's a link to whole list of things i'll be doing at SXSW:

IF YOU ARE IN AUSTIN, don't worry! i'm going to try to do a fun patron-only thing. just trying to figure out where and when.

........

COMING DOWN THE PIKE:

-the voicemail for jill video is out on march 8th, and we also made a gorgeous behindthe-scenes film to go with it. that'll come out sometime shortly after.

-the "drowning in the sound" video is coming together, looks like we'll shoot in late april. WHOOO

-my speaking gig at SXSW feels topically big and important! i will film and post it....

-i'm still hanging onto two films for you that have been in production for EVER: the footgae from NINJATED last year (it's SO GOOD!!!!) and my talk at berklee. it's just been too nuts. it's there. it'll happen.

HOW THE PATREON HAS GROWN....

as of this writing there are 14,847 patrons pledging $58,186 for the first THING of the month.

I LOVE YOU ALL GODDAMIT.

patreon charges you "monthly"/"retroactively" meaning that you get billed on the 1st of the month for all the Things released the month prior (for example, you'll get charged for the Things released in february on march 1st).

so i don't have figures for this month just yet, but here's january:

(i say this every month, but if you're new....)

because people have their pledges capped (HAVE YOU NOT CAPPED YOUR PLEDGE? if you are on a budget, you should. here's the tutorial again), the first Thing raises the most money, and anything released thereafter raises less and less. (I LIKE THIS. it means i never feel too guilty).

the numbers below are gross. not net. basic math. meaning: it's the money raised before fees were deducted by patreon and is not the total deposited to me. patreon takes a 5% fee (which they use to build and sustain the platform, which is GOOD) and then there's a payment processing fee, which varies on a ton of factors and is usually between 5-9% of the total collected.

also, none of this reflects the money i SPENT MAKING THE ART, running my business, etc etc.

i don't share that level of nitty-detail-stuff with you because i assume it would bore you to fucking tears. but you can trust me: paying for a full-time staff, office, manager, accountant, and massive team of art-collaborators ain't cheap. sometimes we barely break even. so be it. this is awesome.

.....

in january, i Thinged two Things:

"Conversations with People Who Hate Me" podcast with Dylan Marron was the first Thing and it earned about $64,864 from 14,276 patrons.

State of All The Things: JANUARY 2019 was the second and final Thing of the month and it earned about $28,449 from 8,983 patrons.

(we say "about" because patreon may be still trying to process some pledges that have yet to go through...we never know, you know.)

DISPATCHES FROM TEAM AFP

words from hayley:

February may be the shortest month on the calendar, but it sure has felt like one, elongated day - we are in full motion right now. In addition to prepping for the album release for March 8th, we’ve pushed the throttle into full force to make release week something special. Lots of behind the scenes work has been put into setting up the Artery community page for the patron hosted listening parties, and getting things in order for the 3 parties Amanda is hosting, including setting up the ticketing pages and keeping track of everything that goes into making these events happen.

The first week of the month was a bit of a yo-yo, as we were planning to head up to Boston to help out on the Voicemail for Jill music video, but it got delayed at the last minute because Amber, the director, was too sick to travel.

Then, when the shoot was rescheduled a few days later, Amanda also got sick and it was touch and go on whether she’d be able to shoot her scene. Overall, it worked out and the video shoot was a beautiful experience, but it was 3 back to back 17-hour-plus days and that was….exhausting. Michael and I got home to New York for a few hours, and then bounced on a train to Philadelphia to accompany Amanda at her recording at World Cafe and to meet with our team at Fame House. First, let me just say that being at World Cafe was so wonderful.

When I first started working for Amanda 10 years I went to her World Cafe recording with the Nervous Cabaret. So it was especially awesome to see Amanda’s old wall tag on the WXPN studio, remembering when she first drew it all those years ago.

Continuing on with the whirlwind of February, last week I went to a Patreon Creator Roundtable in New York – this was my second time attending one of these things. It’s a meeting where some Patreon staff come and talk to a few Patreon creators to get feedback and insights on what’s working, what we would like to see improved/changed and to give us a sense of what’s to come.

I rolled up, quite literally, with my suitcase because as soon as I left the roundtable i hopped on a train up to Woodstock to meet with the tour crew to get started with the 3 tour warm up shows – first in Hudson, and then two in New York City. The tour crew – every single person – are all bad ass, everyone is truly talented, thoughtful and a real pleasure to work with. I can’t wait to see how the stage show matures and develops once the tour gets rolling!

And now that February has come to an end, we welcome the March madness. I’ll be at all of Amanda’s 3 listening parties next week, so please say hello if you’ll be there! I get back to New York for her Rough Trade in-store just long enough to get a few hours of sleep and grab my suitcase to head off to SXSW.

Here’s a little story about SXSW that actually threads a lot of things together that happened this month: 10 years ago, in Fall 2009 when we were in Philadelphia – for World Cafe and for a gig Amanda performed with The Nervous Cabaret, we were staying at Kyle Cassidy’s house. One morning, it was just me and Amanda – one of the first few times we actually had time to talk since I had only started working with her two months before. She told me that she thought I’d really like SXSW and said that she wanted to take me there but that she didn’t have an album coming out soon so it’d be awhile. That stuck in my brain all these years.

When Amanda went to SXSW for Theatre Is Evil in 2013 or so, I wasn’t working with her management team full time anymore (I was still behind the scenes working part time), so I didn’t get to go with her then. I finally made it to SXSW on my own in 2016 which meant a lot to me, I spoke on a panel and presented/moderated a panel of my own. But now that I’m back full time on Team AFP and we’re releasing There Will Be No Intermission a few days before SXSW starts, I AM SO HYPED to be going this year in support of this record, in support of the work I do with Amanda and representing THIS COMMUNITY and this Patreon to the music world at large.

I’ll be speaking on two panels – one with Camille Hearst, Patreon’s Head of Product - Merch, specifically about how we use Patreon and navigate our operation as an independent music team, and one about how we find and use different technology platforms as a DIY artist team. I also signed up to be a SXSW Mentor so that people can book mini meetings with me to pick my brain and hopefully feel inspired. Here's my fancy speaker page: https://schedule.sxsw.com/2019/speakers/2011232 . I can't wait to be on the ground with Amanda at her events and tell people how this record came to be. SXSW can be a really exhausting and overwhelming time, but I am so stoked to be on the ground with Amanda, telling everyone and anyone about this record, about this community and about how it all matters.

love,
Hayley

p.s. do i look tired? because i am tired. excited, but tired!

p.p.s. when you are often behind a camera documenting something it often means that there aren't many photos documenting you documenting things. here's a self portrait that i took in a mirror upstairs at the cloud club while photographing behind the scenes stills for the "Voicemail for Jill" video shoot

....

words from michael:

Hello Patrons!

I don’t even know where to start. I love you. We did it. Holy Shit.

The Album just premiered on NPR’s First Listen and it’s now out into the World. We’ve been working non-stop around the clock (literally, as our team spans 14 hours of time zones from NYC to Sydney with Alex in the middle) to get this all set up for you and . . . it’s beautiful. We’ve got the Listening Parties happening around the Globe, all the T-Shirts and Vinyl, and many other surprise goodies that you haven’t even heard about yet, travel plans to make, favors of you to ask, videos that are almost done being edited for release. As always, it’s a lot.

There is so much that I could talk about (as always), but I really want to take a moment to focus on the upcoming tour. Amanda played three warm-up shows; one upstate and two in New York City. Sitting in the theater surrounded by people while Amanda played her songs and told the stories brought me back to my theater roots in a way that I wasn’t really expecting. I was lucky enough to see the first iterations of this show in Edinburgh, where it was moving and powerful. What it’s become is so much more. This show is part concert, part TED talk, part personal conversation, but to me personally it comes across as a beautiful piece of theater, the kind that has always really spoken to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a tried and true theater dork and I’ll happily get down with anything from the classics of Aeschylus and Shakespeare, to the loveable weirdos of Beckett and Ionesco and Caryl Churchill, to the more somber realism of O’Neill, August Wilson, & Checkov. But this is something different, something a little more raw and visceral. These songs and the stories that accompany them are the kind of theater that forges a connection between the audience and the performer and even more so in between the audience members themselves.

I kept looking around and seeing people reach out and touch each other as parts of a story or song stirred something in them. I watched people catch the eye of someone else across the room and give a little nod. One Patron, after seeing the upstate show said that the experience allowed her and her partner to open up to each other in ways that they hadn’t before. Finding Connections, fostering compassion, and bringing out the light amidst all the darkness is what this show is to me. It’s already helped me to move on from some difficult parts of my own past and helped me to let some things go. . . like a whole lot of hair!

If you’re already coming to one of the shows, you’re in for a treat. I won’t tell you what to expect other than to be prepared to feel. If you know anyone who loves theater or music or maybe just needs to feel seen, heard, or loved. . . bring them to the show. We’ll have hugs to give!

All that and I didn’t even get to mention anything about all the Press and Radio we’ve been doing, or about welcoming Allison to the team (Hi Allison!), or how amazing Hayley is (seriously, she’s the fucking best, you don’t even know), or say thank you to Alex and his boxes (I feel you buddy, you should see the office right now) or even about the Voicemail for Jill Video (Holy fuck. Hold onto your seats. It’s gorgeous). So much going on. I need to get back to work!

And as always, thank you. We couldn’t do any of this without you. This is our community and we are amazing.

Hugs,

Michael

....

words from alex in the uk:

missive from UK merch-land, where i am buried in solitary confinement while the rest of team AFP is partying together stateside!

this month's report is that i am, quite simply, buried and drowning in pre-order merch.

in case you ever wondered what a merch store's CD and vinyl stock looks like, imagine 2 of these:

followed by 4 of these:

and then in the midst of packing orders, your house will look like this:

though mostly i have been avoiding this view, by sitting at my desk and turning my back on it.

so mostly my view has been this:

gazing upon my post-valentines roses, and a box of soil that contains a baby cactus i am trying to nurture, as i go through an endless spreadsheet typing out endless notes for all y'all to go with your orders.

the soundtrack to this whole process has been the harry potter audiobooks, narrated by stephen fry. so far i am nearing the end of goblet of fire - harry is just about to begin the third task.

now when you get your parcels in the next couple of weeks, now you can picture the scene as i packed them, surrounded by boxes, complete with a wizard soundtrack.

so, see you next month, when i hopefully will no longer be drowning!!

love
-alex
xoxo

(p.s. i also wrote a sort of review/reflection/ramble about the album, which if you are so inclined you can read right here: http://alexampersand.blogspot.com/2019/02/there-will-be-no-intermission.html)

it starts slowly.

give it time.

feel the goosebumps crawl all over your body when the piano starts.

Hi Allison. I'm probably biased, but I like you name. Welcome to the team.

I love the althings. And I love hearing from the crew. I hope you and your voice have recovered a little? Anxiously awaiting the download link for the LP... I will only get home to my physical copy and the art book in April :/

1. I plan on listening to the album over the weekend. 2. I have bought a ticket for Dec 5 Union Chapel - it will be my very first time seeing you 'in performance'. :-) 3. That may be the very best performance of The Ukulele Anthem EVER. 4. I bought myself a ukulele, I am struggling but for now I must be content with playing it badly - very badly. 5. I can't talk about Voicemail for Jill yet, but I'm listening to it. 6. A very warm welcome to Allison. 7. Alex, thank you SO MUCH for all your hard work. If I lived anywhere near you I would offer to help. 8. Amanda, THANK YOU for everything, much love from me. Over and out xx

Oh Amanda. It's perfect.

What a month! Quick question for other UK patrons, is anyone else having trouble with the second Union Chapel date and/or the Manchester date? The Union Chapel one was showing as sold out during pre-sale and still is now, and the Manchester one only had balcony seats left during pre-sale and, again, is still showing as that. Have they both just sold in the same way on pre-sale and again on full sale or am I doing something wrong or is the site being weird for other people?

So much exciting stuff ❤️ I am saving the album for a special quiet moment when I can give it my full attention. I am very much looking forward to it ☺️

Wow. Holy shit! I need to bookmark this post to return to so I can finish reading it. I can't believe how busy and amazing this month has been and it feels so nice to know we all have contributed not only financially, but even more importantly? to having peace of mind and the ability to create SO MUCH incredible art AND retain the closeness with your supporters & fans that you do. So much love to you Amanda! ♡

This is, officially, my favorite State of All Things. You seem so happy and excited, I love all the photos, *and* you can see my shoulder in one of the Joe's Pub pics. (Though this would still be my favorite SoAT without that last one.) See you at NYPL!
