.................
and now...
THANK YOU ALL for voting on the tour poster!! the vote is still open here until sunday night...but there's a clear front-runner, so unless someone wants to start a coup, it looks like this is a likely winner, with 640 votes:
but this one is a *relatively* close runner-up....with 352 votes...
here's a question:
if i sold BOTH OF THESE as a "package" at the merch table, would that be overkill?
i suppose i could always print both, but we have so, so, little room to ship and get stuff around, it'd be a real pain in the ass. maybe i can try to convince my team to print both and we can sell them separately, with a discount for buying the pair....
i'll work on it. if you think you'd be likely, at a show, to buy a "set of 2", especially if they come discounted, holler. that might be an easy solution...and we could package them in beautiful paper, etc.
or....maybe i could make a SET OF 6 prints and defy this entire vote. this is why i drive my team crazy. a set of prints would just be...expensive. life is full of hard decisions.
..............
here's this morning's short Voice Ramble, 8 minutes of glory before i had to do the day-care run and get my ass back home for a podcast interview...but extra points for it opening up with something you've never heard before: neil gaiman reading "frozen" IN FRENCH. it's....so cute. he's home. i'm relieved. it's been too long.
i needed a fucking break, mate:

ash is so, so into frozen it's not funny. it's gotten to the point where i really had to just embrace it and make it part of my stage show, because the conflict within re: All Things Disney runs very deep in my soul.
i'll work it out on tour. you'll see.
the elsa you see pictured here was bought in martiniqie airport because ash saw it and FLUNG HIMSELF on the ground and refused to move until i bought it for him. and i don't usually give in to fits and demands, but we were stuck in an airport, and i was like: fuck it. i'll get you the elsa. elsa is now his...spirit animal. i'll get into the depths of frozen later, but holy shit do i have feelings about it.
ANYWAY
I HAVE WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(see all my exclamation points???)
i have officially STARTED MY PODCAST INTERVIEWS.
i am going to kick my own podcasting into high gear this season because....well, i have so much spare time. not like i'm touring a record around the world or putting out a huge book or trying to raise a toddler at the same time or anything.
it needed to happen this way.
i've been wanting to create a podcast for YEARS AND YEARS but i just never made the time to do it. i finally found a producer/partner, named fannie cohen, who's been helping kick my ass and organize a PLOT around how we fuckin do this. we did a little "test" podcast using my interviews with the neuroscientist david eagleman as a jumping off point - just for patrons last year (it's called "the speed of the art and the speed of the heart"...and still hasn't gone out into the public...but it was a GREAT great experiment in podcast-producing....and we all worked beautifully together.
then i got super busy with this forthcoming record....and things were sludging along until a few months ago when i had an idea that locked everything into place:
why not kick off the podcast by having THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM provide the themes for the interviews??? bam. everything fell into place. the songs on THERE WILL BE NO INTERMISSION are so, so specific...think about it. judy blume (an obvious way to talk about censorship, influence, feminism)...the ride (a great entry-portal into death, acceptance, zen)....voicemail for jill (which, again, you haven't heard, but you're about to, and believe me....it holds a conversation to be had).
so yesterday and this morning i did THREE interviews with really special people: andrew o'neill (who was in london), laurie penny (who was in LA), and roisin ingle (who was in dublin)...i talked to them all for about an hour and a half each, and we professionally recorded both sides of the phone call, pro-podcast-style.
about twenty minutes into my last interview, the one with roisin, the whole episode clicked into place and i was like: i know how this is going to work. it was such a satisfying feeling.
fannie's going to have her work cut out for her...editing three 100+ minute conversations into a one-hour podcast....BUT, nothing will ever go to waste. one of the things i love about the patreon is that i can also upload the raw-raw conversations JUST FOR YOU ALL here, and if you wanna hear the whole interviews, they'll be available just for patrons...i'll just throw them up on soundcloud.
i cannot tell you how excited i am about all this...i've waited SO, SO long to do this.
here's me, talking to andrew yesterday:
hee heee
and the funnest part??
MAKING THE DREAM LIST OF WHO I WANTED TO TALK TO.
and man...is it a hot fuckin list of people....and so many of them have already said yes.
musicians, writers, scientists, academics, buddhists, anarchists....
this was one of the reasons i really wanted to podcast...i looked around one day and thought: good lord, i have access to some of the best brains in the universe, especially through my connections at TED and MIT/harvard. i occupy this very strange space that connects art-music-land and academic-science-tech-land. and i love that space...and i want to use it, talk about it, dive into it.
there's also the beauty of the fact that this podcast WILL HAVE NO ADVERTISERS.
why? because of this patreon. i will put the podcast for free out into the universe, as most podcasts do, but all the money it costs to record, pay for, edit, produce...it will ALL come from you, the patrons. never from advertising.
and why is THAT awesome? that is awesome BECAUSE I WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER HAVE TO COMPROMISE THE CONTENT.
wherever there is advertising, there is compromising. there just is.
i want this to be a balls out, honest, real, true, opinionated, loving place where guests can say ANYTHING they want without fear.
and the patreon has now made that possible. so thank you.
your patronage money is keeping me FREEEEEEEEE.
and i think you're gonna be so proud of this.
so...a few things....the first episode will HOPEFULLY be out by the end of march, and it's centered around "voicemail for jill", which is coming to your ears very soon.
but while i'm bopping around i'll be collecting interviews EVERYWHERE...and also collecting some audio and stories from YOU...so hold the phone, literally.
i already have a few great interviews set up for my time in austin at SXSW...and you're gonna die when you learn about some of the people i'm talking to. this is so.....awesome.
and while i have you here....this is your chance.
who do you want me to talk to?
OPEN SEASON. GAME ON.
leave a dream list. anything's possible, and i'm traveling the world this year, so it's all game. i'd prefer to do these interviews in person if i can. but the phone is fine.
hit me. hit me. use your widest imagination. think outside politics, and art and fame.
think about THE ART OF ASKING EVERYTHING (which is the podcast title) and hit me with your best shot.
i'm reading and taking notes.
