MY LOVES!!! i hope your ears are ready. i have two things for you. one small and one BIG.

1) a voiceblog-love-thing

2) ONE OF THE BEST SONGS FROM THE RECORD, ready for you to listen to....by accident.

holy shit, what a morning to wake up to...like: THE RIDE BEGINS.

it all starts here, and unexpectedly. i wasn't expecting to send you a song today. it wasn't in the plan. but what fucking is anymore, right?

greetings from a blizzard in woodstock....i'm home....i did world cafe on WXPN radio yesterday in philly - i pre-recorded four songs: "drowning in the sound", "the ride", "voicemail for jill" (which you haven't heard yet) and "death thing" (which you also haven't heard...but you will....soon).

i got back to woodstock waaaay late and woke up and left you a VoiceLoveMail, or whataver we are calling it. here it is. warning: there is poop involved. i'm not kidding:

https://soundcloud.com/amandapalmer/voiceblog-feb-12-2019/s-x87rh

if you want to READ this voice ramble, lovingly transcribed by alex, along with the whole archive of transcribed voice rambles, CLICK HERE

go ahead. listen. and bear in mind that i didn't know back then at 8:30 am what i know now.

i didn't know that i'd have...something else for you.

i got out of the bath, picked up my phone, and found out this news:

today, NPR's "All Songs Considered" decided to PLAY THE ENTIRE TRACK OF "THE RIDE" - all 10 minutes of it. it's pretty unprecedented for them to play something this long. i was honored.

robin hilton, the host, tweeted:

'I’ve been waiting my whole life for someone to write “The Ride.” Massive thanks to ⁦@amandapalmer⁩ for it. Do yourself a favor and listen.'

in fact, since the song is sooooo long, robin hoarded his show time and this is his only song pick for this episode. he says, at the beginning of the episode: "....if you're only going to bring one song to the table it better be pretty damn good".

and he had such nice things to say about The Ride, and about YOU, who helped make this song....and it's on national radio and...it all makes the patreon feel so REAL.

i'm, like, in tears over here.

you may not understand WHY this means so much to me, but...i'm an NPR junkie. i listen to this show and love these people and really respect their opinions.

this kind of compliment means more to me than, i dunno, rolling stone.

BUT also, the whole team was like...holy shit. the song is OUT THERE NOW, WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO.

and guess what, folks? since we aren't a major fucking label or even a minor fucking label and since we are JUST US we can do whatever we want whenever we want because WE HAVE THE MAGIC OF PATREON....so.

I AM JUST GOING TO GIVE YOU THE SONG....right now, because...yeah. you're my goddamn patrons and you helped, almost co-wrote, this song with me. you know? i feel like it's fair. the recording is amazing. i'm not releasing it out into "the world" - it won't live on the internet off NPR or anywhere else on iTunes, spotify, etc until the album is out....

.........

one note: if you feel like you've "heard" the song before because you've heard the demo....no you haven't. it begins with piano but then....

things happen. just listen.

..............

IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS PATREON and are like, errrrr, what is she talking about: i wrote "the ride" as a songwriting exercise based on blog comments here on the patreon, and then made a video while i recorded the demo of the song last year at wesleyan universtiy (that patron-only locked post is HERE...and at some point soon we will hopefully release that video out into the world. but i suggest you listen to the album version first, below, then come back to that post as extra credit. because the new version is SICK AF).

...............

so. without further ado, here's the song download for your ears only.

it's the first track on the record. yes, i am opening my new record with a 10 fucking minute long song. WHY? BECAUSE I LOVE IT AND I GIVE NO FUCKS!!!

i'm also giving these links to ALL PATRONS (not just $3+) cos, i am.

wheeeeeee:

MP3: https://we.tl/t-Pn86HIfiQX

WAV: https://we.tl/t-6fxgM3L43k

Also created a zip file with both compressed inside in case this is necessary: https://we.tl/t-WO4SuDZdP6

note: you'll be getting the song again when i send you THE ENTIRE ALBUM IN LESS THAN A MONTH (eeeeeek), so if you don't wanna download it and clutter up your files....you can just go listen to it on NPR.

in fact, i'd love it if you did that, because i'd love to send them the traffic. you can stream the whole "All Songs Considered" episode (it's the last song they play, starting at the half way mark) or listen to it in the embedded stream player.

and if you want to share this link on socials...twitter, FB, etc, and tell people the story of how it was created (especially if you were part of it)....i would love that more than life itself.

tag me, tag NPR (@nprmusic and @allsongs), if you're on twitter, tag robin hilton, the host (@nprobin).

The Ride is the last song, and the intro is just...well, beautiful. you'll see.

one more thing:

hayley helped me look it up....thank you to a VERY special patron here: mike johnson...he was the one who posted the bill hicks quote on that Ride Blog.

mike, if you read this, and you hit me in the comments with your email or mailing address....i want to send you a special thank-you gift in el olde snaile maile. your comment literally sparked this song into motion and i'll never be able to really thank you enough.

and...all of you...oh my god.

thank you. for helping me write this record. record, create and make ALL OF THIS,

and hey...thanks bill hicks (RIP) for being so brilliant, and thanks npr for....getting it.

much more soon.....there's more tour about to be announced (i'm looking at you, UK & europe), along with patron-only presales, special listening parties for the album, and so much more.....it's all happening.

here we go.

it's a BOY!

no wait

it's a GIRL!!!

no wait

it's a RIDE!!!!

xx

I absolutely needed to hear this song. You are so good at putting Feelings into words into music...it’s perfect. Thank you for sharing! Beautiful. I’m going to go wipe these tears away now.

I finally stole time to listen. Hot bath. Yummy essential oils. It didn’t take long to realize I would be deeply moved. I felt like you sang the song just for me, just for my son, my daughter, my niece and so many more who could use these lyrics... and what’s awesome is I’m sure all of us feel that way. Thank you so much. I am grateful to receive such a gift.

Something I would love for the VoiceRambles is if we can send in bands or songwriters or something and you tell us what you think of them, maybe a memory of listening. Obviously you’d have to choose only the ones you know. I think it would be a nice way to interact. I’d love to hear your thoughts on ABBA. . . . And even my childless self knows that, sometimes, you just need to get in the bath.

I listened to your voice blog while folding my laundry, changing sheets & putting on washing on Saturday morning. It's nice to hear your voice is as crackly as mine in the morning. I love the mind dumps. I downloaded the song but can't listen to it yet, because the kids are here & if I cry then they will cry & then there's a whole change in the day. I will save it for nap time listening. I love you & thanks for sharing. I wish I could leave this message as a voice post.... xxx

Thank you for The Ride. Life is about loss, and you have captured that beautifully. I felt comforted, not alone in the world, but on the ride with all the humans working the joys and sorrows, the loves and losses. I also left the song with tears, wanting to heal all the wounds of the world, but I will be content to pass on hugs and listening, and sharing to the humans I meet along the way. That will be enough.

I love the song. It's very comforting and real. Beatifully sung. The "choral" keyboard (?) additions irritated me a bit, not sure yet if I like them. But the song is great. Also, this reminds me of a scene in the Queen movie where a producer is resisting "Bohemian Rhapsody" because no radio station would ever play a song that long. Fuck that :-).

You asked about what we'd like to hear, and incidentally mentioned your possible menopausal state. I'd like to hear more about menopause, as someone who also is trying to figure out whether she's sliding into it...are these hot flashes, or am I just overdressed?...please please say I'm done with this bloody sh#t...

The voice blogs are perfect like this. What I like is hearing your true self, just tell us what's been going through your head. The song is as amazing as the demo was. I really like the decision to stay "naked" with the arrangements but can't help wonder what it would sound like with a drum and a swirling synthesizer. Like a brutal Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite. Now to do the rest of your voice rambles while I cook dinner.
