(patrons only)

hello my dear patrons....

i am seriously beat.

the record get mastered in NYC today, i'm in LA with family, and i spent until 2 am working on last-minute changes to the album. i've never gotten anything in so down to the wire. GOOD NEWS: the album is literally a triumph. i am so close to it right now that i can't see straight but there is a part of me that knows it's the best thing i've ever made. GOOD NEWS #2: jherek and i worked with extra musicians in LA to add all sorts of extras that will go between songs...and many of those elements will be on the vinyl only. basically the good news is that the album is weird as all get out and we made it even weirder and if you thought you knew what to expect from a new amanda palmer album you DO NOT. it's....special.

i am so tired.

hug me please.

........

NOW, some AMAZING news:

some of you may have gotten an email from patreon today notifying you of a new reward addition to your patreon, asking you if you want to claim your "reddit flair".

YES. YOU DO.

this is a really special thing that i am doing with patreon, it isn't available to all patron pages, just us - and some other beta people - at the moment.

yes we are awesome.

here's what that's about.

if this all seems too nerdy for you - don't worry. let the early adopter nerds here play around with it (and me, and each other) and we'll circle back once everything's groovy and try to explain it to the group.

for those of you who don't know what reddit is (IT IS POSSIBLE), it's basically a tool for discussion on the internet. it's a forum. it's a place to discuss things more easily than here, using pictures, and threads, etc. i have a "so-caled subreddit (i.e. a forum) at the address "r/amandapalmer".

patreon is testing an integration/partnership with reddit to allow creators (me) to connect their "subreddit" (i.e. forum/discussion page) to their patreon page (and allow me to offer special "patron reddit badges" as part of our reward tiers - who knows how that will work but we will figure it out together).

so now, when you post on the "r/amandapalmer" subreddit it will show as a patron.

this is one way patreon are adding and testing new community features and since that's something i'm ALWAYS asking them for, they asked me if i wanted to test this one out. i said HELL YES. so here we are.

i can not overstate how frustrating it is for me that everybody's community discussion takes plac not so much here on patreon, but over at facebook. i have nothing against the community (i fucking cherish this community), but facebook as a corporation really frustrates me, and it's always made me sad that our best option (because let's face it...) for deep community connection and discussion is at the current facebook patron-only group. i am not asking you guys to stop using it...USE IT. it's a glorious place and has done so many things for so many people, including me. but let's also experiment with this and see where and what it gets us.

and if facebook dies an sudden ugly death (who knows, right?) - we will have options :)

let's just see how it goes

you can add your reddit user name to your patreon profile by clicking clicking the link to "connect to reddit" from the email patreon sent and follow the directions there. it looks like this:

i don't know if this will work on mobile phones, but give it a try. on a computer, it'll open a pop-up to sign into reddit and connect it to your patreon account. do it.

right now you can connect your reddit account to patreon by vising the "thank you" page after you pledge, or after you've updated your reward tier selection.

once you connect your accounts, from here on, when you post in the r/amandapalmer subreddit you'll see a patron badge next to your name, indicating their you're a patreon. here's what that looks like if you're hayley !:

to see the badge on reddit, make sure you're viewing reddit's redesign and not their old design. you can change this by going to the bottom of your reddit preferences page: https://www.reddit.com/settings/

we're testing this reddit/patreon integration. REMEMBER: it's in beta, so there may be kinks to iron out.

for example, when this first launched, patreon was directing you to the wrong subreddit link. yikes. that's fixed now though. whew.

we are the VANGUARD, BETCHES!!!!!

https://www.reddit.com/r/amandapalmer

if you have any trouble connecting leave a comment here so we can give feedback to patreon. you can also shoot hayley an email at patronhelp@amandapalmer.net. feel free to hit me in the comments with feedback, too.

GO TO REDDIT AND TALK!!!!

i am literally on family vacation right now, which means it's the worst time for me to be hopping on the internet and chatting excitedly on reddit, but i'll check in ASAP.

nerds unite.

hit me with any questions below, hayley and i are reading.

xx

Can’t find the Reddit thing. I’ve already got an account there and followed the instructions but still didn’t find it.

As someone who barely uses twitter because of the toxic herd hate pile ons I have never been near Reddit and never wanted to. The public element is a worry to me. I, for whatever reason, say far more and speak with a different voice on a patreon only post than I would in a public forum. And on the Facebook group too which has a nice community led vibe and people are genuinely supportive and think twice about what the impact of their words might be on others. I guess mostly I worry about what the protections are on Reddit. Crowds are only safe until enough bad folks creep in and that's what has happened to so much of the Internet. Communities are different and take responsibility for the welfare of members and have power to ensure that welfare - otherwise a community is broken. I won't be rushing over to Reddit until plenty of people have put their toe in the water and to be honest I don't know what Reddit could do to reassure me. As a platform too much really dark stuff thrives in that environment and that's their bread and butter.

Miss Jemima I feel and have always felt the same way, but I created a reddit account today to, as you say, dip my toe in the water and look forward to reporting back how it feels. It's funny, I told my (guy) friend who has been trying to expound the virtues of a carefully cultivated reddit for years now that "Amanda Palmer made me join reddit" and all he came back with was "Amanda Palmer makes people do lots of things" all musing and contemplative and I was like yeah, it's almost like she's a force to be reckoned with and you should pay more attention to her. His like rival faction in school was highly into the Dresden Dolls though so he's apparently got a sour taste in his mouth re: Miss Amanda, which I think is dumb like we're older now, but. We'll see what happens, with reddit and with my friend. <3

I'm SUCH a fan of Reddit. I think it'll fit really well with the community vibe you cultivate. Also, there are ways to make the page super pretty...design all different kinds of flair... backgrounds...

Great idea, I'm so excited about the new album also. I'm sending the virtual hug for all the hard work you do all the time and just you know, because hugs are great. Enjoy your vacation :)

Michela M.

Hugs to you! I really hope that all the tracks (vynil or not) will be available for patrons (possibly according to rewards and tiers?). No Reddit account here, but good to have more options. Let us know when not being on Reddit becomes a problem / means missing too much.

Which is the Reddit tier? I'm having trouble figuring this out.

Me too. Reddit link not working...

Len Tower Jr.

Might try a different web browser. Or emptying your browser's caches, & turing your computer/device off, wait a minute & on, then retry the link.

Len Tower Jr.

can you share any web links to pages explaining how to do backgrounds & pointing to collections of both flairs & backgrounds? thanx either way!

Len Tower Jr.

its sad i'll miss the extra elements that will just be on the vinyl. hoping those elements make it to the internet or CD someday. i last used vinyl to play my 45rmp Winnie the Pooh records when i was wee. health issues prevent me from getting into vinyl as i'm entering my eight decade.

First a hug to fight your current jetlag (((()))) And now... the subreddit has been existing for quiet some time? And you can access it if you have a reddit account? This flair thing is just to recognize each other as Patreons? Am I understanding all this correctly!?

Anonymous

I offer you hugs and espresso. I find the two are most effective when taken together.
