Hello! Here's the new video! It's coming to you a bit early because as subscribers to the production blog know, I experienced a lengthy power outage this month, a month during which it was crucial for me to actually get ahead of schedule to accommodate upcoming CD projects.

So I kind of blazed through this. Please excuse its somewhat sloppy graphics and scarce sound design of this episode. Even though it's a "Mr. Flare production" and is supposed to feel a bit rough around the edges, I still wish I could've polished it a bit more.

But I hope Mr. Flare's sweet, and not at all grating, voice will carry you through...

Enjoy!

Oh gosh! I just looked back to see your early videos and you have Sunglasses catch in there! I found a detail you missed... Ross Harris, who directed this baseball video, also helped film sunglasses catch and the sequel bobbing for glasses! A little bit of through-line trivia for you :-) Ross and I also made a "Drawing Shades" film for fun which got few views because it wasn't great. But also because there were not people paid by a brand to promote it all over the web :-/

This is incredible work, sharp and perfectly paced. It's especially good considering you got it finished while living through a hurricane!

Josh Foti

That was fun to watch! Good work :)

No excuses necessary; this is a great video! Mr. Flare is hilarious and teaches a great lesson to boot.

So when can we preorder your book?

Anonymous

That's one cranky lamp you've got there. Poor you!

Being killed and resurrected didn't help Mr. Flare's attitude any, did it?

Anonymous

I missed mr. Flare. Nice to see him completely digital and with new life after the mishap. I luv you!

Taylor Hensley

This is great and you are great.

Why oh why isn't CD in the top 10 on YouTube. He so deserves it.

I'd love to see how you modeled Mr. Flare. His "face" is so detailed / textured, with the text and whatnot, I assumed you used a photo, but the reflections on the metal and depth of the glass and glass clip would suggest not. Nice work.

Awesome video, great job, Captain!

The quick shot of Mr. Flare using the mouse is one of my favourite things ever

Anonymous

Totally! The sound effect is really nailing it... (although -- putting my smartassology masters degree to good use -- there was no mouse in the shot...)

I guess this time around Dr. D fully shares Mr. Flares crankiness... ;-)

Great stuff as always. Also I really like the way you did the links at the end, looks great.

I don't know anything about vfx but I still dig every video you make because you keep it scientific, caustic and self-aware. You put in so much work for these vids and it's great to see your channel gaining popularity. Thanks so much for being a cool skeptical voice and so openly passionate about this area that you're interested in. You make the world better.

Jameson Simmons

Nothing lazyological about smart time management! See you in 1985-A!

I like Mr Flare, he's a fun, sarcastic counterpart to CD and contrasts well. This was a really fun video, and, as always, you've snuck in lots of wonderful little details. Really hope all is OK with you & yours after the storms. Stay safe, Captain!

I love the video and the breakdown was great as always, and Mr.Flare is a fun character. The message of the video is kind of odd though, you're shaming people who are your fans and are reaching out with video ideas. I think it's fair to call out people should be doing their own research, the whole 'give a man a fish, teach a man to fish' thing, but I wonder if fans will hesitate to send you ideas after seeing this. It's kind of like how my grandmother got mad when I kept 'snopes-ing' her chain emails. People don't like to be called out as being stupid. I think it's something a lot of us skeptics deal with.

That's hilarious! What a great video, as always I loved it! And having a Mr. Flare episode is really refreshing, too! Not that I'm sick of looking at your face, but it just amazes me how you always push to make every video new and different, rather than rest on your laurels, as you would have every right to do! Honestly I really loved the "Master of Lazyology" part at the end, it had me laughing so hard that people were asking if it was real or fake when the creator himself posted a "making of" at almost the same time. If people think that maybe it's too harsh to fans or something, my thoughts are that 1) you've never coddled people, but instead gently push them to be better through logic and humor, and to do otherwise would be insulting, as if you felt the need to "dumb down" things for your audience, and 2) if people don't like it they can put the blame on Mr. Flare, since it was his production, not CD. And, last but not least, I understand but still can't believe that you think this is rushed or sub-par, you animated a 3D Mr. Flare and did a thousand other things I couldn't do in a million years. In short, as always, I love your work. I hope your family, community, and city are well on the way to recovery! Stay safe!

But... that's how the character of Mr.Flare acts... It's a crass character!

Thank you Mr.Flare!

Today I learned I'm lazy, yay!! I'm official!

The design is actually a parody of this classic book on productivity :) https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51TLWMEVT0L.jpg

It's a pretty detailed model. I measured the real lamp as precisely as I could and used a closeup photo of the metal face plate to create a bump map of the stamped details. There is a glowing filament object in the light bulb as well as a scene light. And the glass cover has refraction that gives the whole thing a bit more realism. I'll try to put together some pics!

I've always liked Mr. Flare, but of course you are concerned about overusing him. This was a fine time to bring him back. (I also miss "Captain D tries to escape from the set and encounters disaster" endings, by the way.)

CD I've been watching all your videos as I recently found them. I have to ask, have you been fooled (ala Penn & Teller)?

Anonymous

Great video! I realized that I have a lamp at home that is pretty much identical to Mr. Flare, except that it's a floor lamp. ... It's a great lamp!

That crappy mouse joke had me lol'ing

Mr Flare is very snarky. I don't think Captain D could get away with such an attitude and still remain a revered internet superhero. Then again, every Yin needs its Yang.
