I always look forward to your Marvel reactions. Pity the movie itself wasn't all that great though. Too little, too late.

Funny story about Val. Before this she was in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. A lot of people were annoyed when she just showed up here with no intro because it seemed like they were screwing anyone who wasn't watching the shows. Marvel pointed out that before Covid messed everything this was supposed to come out before the shows. So Val's intro was always going to be "just show up and act like she's always been there."

Now I can't wait for you to see Hawkeye.

Yelena's superhero name is Black Widow in the comic books

If you go back and watch Infinity War, When Cap, Widow and Falcon show up to save Wanda and Vision, She's wearing Yelena's vest.

Widening the Marvel net at this point is a good choice. Really looking forward to the tv shows, some more than others, but diving into the X-Men will be really fun too.

Probably my least favorite of the bunch. They had all the acting talent, but I think the plot was a bit of a misfire.

"Executive Producer" is typically used to pay people "above the line" in the jargon. All movies lose money, at least that's what they tell the IRS. One of their tricks is to move things like ScarJo's fees into the "EP" role, whereupon it becomes an "expense" that the company can deduct from their profits to reduce taxes. It probably also helps get around Guild rules about pay scales, but I'm not sure how that works. There's usually someone called "Line Producer" or similar, who does all the donkey work of actually producing the movie. I am usually pleased to see someone get the EP credit, because it means they are being paid in proportion to the money their participation generates, rather than being shafted while others rake it in. I think this was the movie where ScarJo sued Disney for releasing it online the same day as the theatrical release, and thus depriving her of the money she was owed (a percentage of box office takings).

Don't really think you need to get into X-Men to understand the future movies yet (well, besides one character in Dr Strange)...the Amazing Spider-Man movies are much more time sensitive at this moment. Also I didn't care for Black Widow or the tv shows that much.

this was the movie she sued Disney. The only reason I am happy that the suit worked is because Disney could have easily waited until the pandemic subsided enough to premiere this in theaters as they agreed--sticking to one's word, even as a corporation--is important. Otherwise I don't really care about their drama.

I'm confused as to why Ashleigh kept saying she was watching this out of order when Black Widow came out after Far From Home, so she's watching this in the correct release order. Unless she means that it's out of order if you include the TV shows? Either way, as someone else mentioned, this was meant to come out before the shows did, so I think she watched it at the perfect time.

Amazing Spiderman is coming... but the X-Men detour is happening first, so no worries about that thing you are thinking of

Gonna chime in on whether or not Ashleigh needs to get into X-Men ... she probably should. It makes certain moments go from being "what does that mean? y'all tell me in the comments" to "OMG!". However, it is a rather daunting list of things to suggest. Basically, before watching WandaVision to get the full appreciation, it'd be good to watch AT LEAST X-Men: Days of Future Past (which is great btw). However, that would kind of mean she'd need to watch X-Men 1-3 too :/. And, probably Kick-Ass (which isn't Marvel but some of y'all know why that's a suggestion here). The only other one is that before watching Hawkeye & in part Spider-Man: No Way Home, if we're even doing that, it'd be better to at least see Season 1 of the Netflix version of Daredevil (which I think Ashleigh would absolutely love). And honestly, nothing wrong with taking a break from the MCU for a few months. Plus, we get MORE Ashleigh! $0.02 deposited. ;)

The Goateed Geek

I disagree with all three of you. And after watching the reaction I suspect Ashleigh does as well. There is a lot to like in the film, not just because of the introduction of Yelena. The fight scenes, the chases, the set pieces are great to me. Felt a lot like a Bond movie at times especially with the totally evil villain in a Sky Base and the over the top ending.

Ok, yeah I'm gonna be that guy, and I'm sure I'm going to be jumped on by the "lighten up Francis" crew, and I love this review, one of your best, but the profanity is really getting over the top. I know you're excited and getting pumped but it's really taking away from your reviews and limiting who I can send to. Of course Cathy and I love you greatly! ❤️

Mark Finley

you're absolutely right. It's weird how sometimes she cuts the f-bombs, and other times lets them fly.

Mark Finley

ohhhh....I didn't even think about Daredevil. Yeah, it's weird to think that she has to watch at least a few X-men flilms to get a minor plot point in Wandavision, but she would also have to watch an entire season of Daredevil before Hawkeye.

I am aware. I am only saying that ASM is more vital in the immediate, nothing more (and given two actors--one in Wandavision and one in Moon Knight--in one of the upcoming tv shows, X-Men maybe prove slightly confusing).

Anonymous

Well black widow itself is out of order. it was meant to come out before the Avengers movies that preceded it. Although yes it refers more to your speculation.

Anonymous

she has about 7 movies to get through before even continuing since those x-men AND amazing spider-man movies are going to need watching and one of the x-men movies features the primary actor in Moon Knight. I don't agree with seeing the X-men movies simply for that cameo in wandavision. X-Men should eventually come but down the line after a marvel break. It's pretty ridiculous that marvel will eat up a monthly spot for like 2 + years straight and I am a marvel fan. It's time to branch out to DC or preferably non-super hero stuff fully for a few months or more. Just my view.

None of what you said applies to story though and many of the marvel films before it did the action pieces just as well but the story was stronger and more impactful--to the universe it plays in. the subject matter of thrown away women is important but this movie limits itself even when addressing that subject. Also the Bond villains had personality and more time devoted to them than Dreykov did. He was a complete afterthought. When the dust settles is it all style, no substance. The cool set pieces only go so far on repeat viewings. A complete disservice to the character and actors (but at least it isn't the worst marvel movie in the catalogue).

There are many xmen films but if you want to see why hugh jackman made himself so beloved in the role go to 2000 xmen. Youll also see my fave mystique.
