I've never been that impressed with this movie either. Frankly, Ben Stiller's work has never done much for me. I've got no problem with silly, gross or even stupid movies but this just pushes it too far and then doesn't work for me when it gets there. I'm highy looking forward to CLUE though.

Anonymous

Its ok Ashleigh, not one of my favorites either. you like and dislike whatever you want.

Anonymous

This movie is a mixed bag. The gags were hilarious but the story was blasé. With all the gags, they took them as far as they would go, and then took it one step further. The appeal is the gags: "pork and beans", "hair gel" and wrestling with the dog were all over the top funny. But it had a bare outline of a plot. That was Brett Favre. He was the QB for the Green Bay Packers. Best movie with Ben Stiller is Meet the Parents and its sequel Meet the Fockers.

Anonymous

It's ok I totally get you not liking it, also lots of things we joked about in the 90s. Being super edgy in your comedy ages poorly. I'm glad I got ghost into your February poll

Anonymous

Ben Stiller is a little like Adam Sandler, like him or loathe him kinda thing. Oh well on to the next review.

Anonymous

Chris Elliot from Ground hog Day, Yes!!!!!

Anonymous

Mat Dillon was awesome in The Outsiders!!!!! Ash you've got to check it out!!! Stay Gold!!!!! ASH watch the outsiders and find out what that means!!!

Anonymous

I love the movie CLUE ... But you still gotta see LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS with RICK MORANIS..IT HAS A STAR STUDDED CAST, AND ITS NOT JUST FUNNY HA HA, ITS SHIT YOUR PANTS FUNNY HO HO!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous

This was one of my favorites growing up. I was 18 when it came out, so these jokes and subject matter were right up my alley. It's been a long time since I've seen it. And like Bill said, those certain gags are timeless, in my mind at least. Maybe this movie was best remembered in the past. Another good Cameron Diaz movie was Being John Malkovich. Hopefully it aged better than Something About Mary.

Bryan Foster

Ashleigh honey, is there something we can do so you don’t have to sit in the floor? Maybe a 2 seater sofa (or one person-one cat) or a nice office chair or something?

Anonymous

I think a vital indicator of how good this movie was is that they never considered doing a sequel. Ben Stiller, like Adam Sandler, was also hard to find regularly funny in most of his movies. Another thing is that very few other movie reviewers have done this film. But good on you for giving it a go. Know now that I feel your pain. Only The Lonely would have been brilliant.

Anonymous

Oh. The pottery scene in Ghost. When doing pottery, it does not feel sticky. It is very smooth, cool and comfortable to the touch. The pressure is applied gently and gradually all the time maintaining a damp surface that is easy to mold and shape. It can be difficult at times not to be creative in your actions. Hands are easily wiped clean and quickly with a damp cloth and a little water.

Jill Peterson

You are super! I enjoyed this video much more than I enjoyed the movie. Does anyone else get super tense watching Ben Stiller? Things just get worse and worse for him in his movies, and I find it makes me very anxious.

Jerrod Acree

Not a classic. Movie sucked when it came out. Not my thing. Sorry you wasted your time.

Tyler Foster

I was going to guess you wouldn't like this one that much. I do recommend the Ben Stiller movies Zero Effect and Reality Bites, though.

Tyler Foster

He also directed the dark comedy The Cable Guy, which I love, but I don't know what you would think of it.

Anonymous

I think this is an overrated movie. Two parts have become iconic and can never be repeated: Balls in the zipper, and spunky hair gel. Other than those two things, the movie's meh, at best, in my opinion. Sorry I haven't written a comment in a while, but my wrist was effed up. :) Great review, take good care!!!

Anonymous

Funny. Just read Cameron Diaz hasn’t made a movie in 7 years and has no plans to return anytime soon. I feel like Charlie’s angels would be fun to see more of her. Ben stiller is probably best known for Zoolander that people like (not me). Meet the Parents is ok. Sort of the same cringe humor here at Stillers expense.

Jill Peterson

I hope you love CLUE like I do! When it was out in theaters, they played each ending in a different showing, so my family saw it in the theater 3 times, and loved every minute of it. It was marketing genius!

Anonymous

Bean bag chairs are so comfy!!!!!!! I think you can get them on Amazon!!!

Kenton Kruger

Certainly not saying she would have liked it, but this movie is one of those occasions where the extended version is actually worse than the original cut. A lot of the new jokes fall flat, there was a reason they were cut in the first place, and it really messes with the timing and feel of the movie.

Mark Sylvester

I voted for Only the Lonely. I think you would have liked that way better. I was never a fan of Something about Mary so I think your review is very fair.

Mark Sylvester

I was very surprised when I voted and this was leading the poll especially knowing that you like John Candy. I thought the vote would turn around and Only the Lonely would come out on top.

Be Kind

Meet the Parents features a cat heavily too. 🐈

Anonymous

I’m glad you saw it. It’s a personal favorite of mine though I’m well aware it’s an acquired taste. I definitely recommend watching Only the Lonely. Though for St. Patrick’s Day, you may want to consider Darby O Gill and the Little People if you haven’t watched it. It’s Disney, fairy tales, leprechauns, a ghost story and even had a love story featuring a then unknown Sean Connery.

Gio Vidrio

The way you introduced your “welcome back” the first time was an accurate representation of this movie. Ready for what March has in store. Good bye Love Month.

Anonymous

I'm with you, this one never grabbed me. There are a few Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler movies I like, but not the majority. The humor just doesn't click for me. Tropic Thunder is a legend however.

Anonymous

I refrained from voting because this was the only movie on the poll that I was familiar with, and I didn't want to contribute to you having to watch it. This movie made me so uncomfortable and I've disliked Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz ever since. The bonus Beans at the end of the reaction made watching worth it and I'm very excited about Clue. 😁

Be Kind

Sorry you didn’t like it. I just remember laughing so hard I nearly peed my pants at the dog scene. Ben Stiller facedown w/his nails scratching into the floor as he’s being dragged from behind; the death match between him and that tiny dog; the dog flying thru the window — one of the funniest scenes I’d ever seen. And I felt sorry for Ben’s character. He was a lovable loser who then winds up with the girl everyone wanted. There was a sweetness to it imo.

Mark Sylvester

Not a big Ben Stiller fan either. I do think his dad is funny. He stole the show many of times on Seinfeld and The King of Queens. The King of Queens was not a favorite of mine but Jerry Stiller was very good in it!

Anonymous

Ok, I thought you would like this one, but I obviously was wrong. I think you'll really like Clue, though. There are multiple endings with each version having a different character being guilty of the crime.

Anonymous

The 40 Year Old Virgin might be more your speed.

Be Kind

Okay, so take note ... Since you don’t like “Mary,” you prob would NOT like the biggest BO hit from the Farrelly Brothers either: DUMB AND DUMBER. They also directed KINGPIN, not a hit but still a fav. They are known for this crude style of humor, and those films are very popular. Ppl will rec them for sure at some point, so be forewarned.

Anonymous

OMG, I love that voice you did in your review! I looked away for a second and it totally caught me off guard! Haha

Anonymous

I liked TSOM for the gags but thought the movie's plot was weak. But it is way better than tge two you mentioned. I just don't think Jim Carrey is funny at all.

Be Kind

I wouldn’t worry about not seeing Only the Lonely. It bombed at the BO through no fault of John Candy; it was the premise. It’s also like 50 First Dates in that only half the aud liked it. Clue also bombed at the BO, but the aud score is high. It’s a farce though, which many ppl don’t like, myself incl. At any rate, we’re done w/romance month and can look forward to the next thing.

Anonymous

I'm with you. This movie didn't do it for me either when I saw it back in the day. Not everyone is going to like everything. Good comedic timing there when you announced the next movie!

Anonymous

most of ben stillers movies will be like this so beware!

Anonymous

I absolutely cannot wait to see what you think of Clue!

Anonymous

Hi maybe you'll like clue a little more. very different from this one. not as crude. but I was working at the movie theater in 1998 and back then people in the theater rolling laughing so hard. this movie was also very controversial at the time too. I don't think the story was meant to be takin that seriously though. LOL but all super good. take care. blessings to you and your hubbin. namaste.

Anonymous

I’m an 80s kid so of course I voted for Pretty in Pink. I don’t hate Mary or Ben Stiller, but I’m not surprised Ashleigh didn’t like it considering she didn’t like the Sandler movie.

Anonymous

Be fair-Ben Stiller didn’t write the screenplay to this movie.

Anonymous

Yes the pottery making process looks like yer massaging a giant elephant turd!!!!🐘💩👐

Anonymous

Ok guys we gotta make this up to Ashleigh lol I think you'd like Mannequin its a Rom Com too or Phenomenon. Or or or or LOL Top gun. It is a action movie primarily but love story in it too and cute dudes :D so cant go wrong with Top Gun.

Brent Fugett

Please watch The Wedding singer. It’s so much better.

Anonymous

Yeah I always thought this movie went on way too long despite a few laugh out loud parts...forgot a lot of scenes like when Sully fell off the wagon...I quit the booze in 1998 and remain sober to this day knock on wood! Also Mary's stepdad was played by Keith David who played Childs in "The Thing"

Thomas Yanez

Well, I still like the movie. Some of that is probably based on the memory of how much I enjoyed it when it first came out. This is the first time I've seen the extended version and I think this is a great example of why you sometime take stuff out of a movie. None of the new (to me) content worked, and much of it dragged the pace down and left a "WTF" feeling. I'm willing to bet you might have liked it a little more if you had seen the original cut instead, but too late for that now.

Vicky phillips

I’m not a fan of this either

Vicky phillips

Sleepless in Seattle such a good movie

Birdie Num Num

So February is all romance films, but no Titanic...

Wally Hartshorn

Frankly, I’m happy to hear that you didn’t like this movie, because that means we have similar tastes. :-) This was a very popular movie at the time, but I never understood the hype. Watch “Stripes” get get a dose of Bill Murray AND John Candy in a funny movie.

Anonymous

I hope you’ll watch “Only the Lonely” at some point.

Be Kind

When is our poll for next week, and what genre, if any, will we do in March? In two sep vids, you said you would tell us your plans later, and I’ve been holding my breath this entire time waiting to find out. I’m dead now. 💀

Anonymous

The Farrelly brothers are from my home town - the town where this movie starts - so I wish I didn’t hate their movies.

Be Kind

Oh! I keep forgetting to mention ... the scene where the PI feels Mary’s boobs was like a wink at the aud. They were a long-time couple at the time. (The PI had false teeth and mustache. He’s actually quite good looking but was playing it down for comedy. He’s not creepy irl.) I realized that scene must seem horrifying w/o context.

Anonymous

This was also not a favourite of mine. Kinda glad you didn't like it.

Amy Silknitter

You have got to get the Shawshank Redemption onto a poll. And I’m with you on this one. Brett Favre was the Green Bay Packers quarterback for an era. Which is why it’s funny she says she’s a Niners fan. Meaning the San Fran 49ers. Also cannot wait for Clue. One of my absolute faves.

Eric Janssen

"Hype" is exactly the word: In its day (I'm actually saying that about the late 90's??), this was, oo, the most SHOCKING outrageous comedy to hit audiences, hence why it still has the sentimental cult who still browbeat every single reactor with it. The Farrelly Brothers never did live up to their own myth--I don't see anyone asking for Osmosis Jones or the Three Stooges Movie--but if Ashley gets hordes of fans deluging her with requests for "Do 'Kingpin'!", now at least she'll know WHY.

Russell Massey

If mot a huge fan of this movie either. If you want to see Ben Stiller in something funny I think Zoolander and Dodgeball are the best choices. Cameron is much better in Charlie's Angels.

Russell Massey

You've already reacted to rwo of the top 100 British films. I'd trally like you to add to your total with Get Carter (70s gangster film) or Zulu (60's historical war/action film).

Brandon Royce

I was in that slim minority that voted for, Only the Lonely. And even though I dislike, There's Something About Mary, it was still an enjoyable reaction to see.

Autumn Bough

Okay, I think we are finding out “edgy” 90s through early 2000s gag humor isn’t your thing. I think that’s just the time we were in. I was 22 when this movie came out and I would have said it was hilarious...but now I think maybe I was just a different person because it didn’t age well. Ben Stiller is ALWAYS the hapless dude who is sweet to the core and just wants the girl But goes about everything wrong or has bad luck and gets the girl in the end. His movies usually are cringey and have a couple laughs and are often a little gross...zoolander, Along Came Polly, Dodgeball, Tropic Thunder, and even Keeping the Faith...he runs the same formula in all those and if you aren’t down for it those movies won’t appeal to you. They are what used to be called irreverent...but I think that’s just mostly received as rude and gross now. LoL Unless you’re in the mood for it. A really weird movie of Cameron Diaz’s that I always liked was Very Bad Things. It’s a DARK comedy though. Really dark. LOL I’m totally looking forward to Clue! I watch it probably once a year. I just really like the feeling of chaos has. Summer Rental with John Candy is a super sweet movie for Summer. Better than Only the Lonely I think. I’ve watched it twice in the last week because I am ready for spring break.

Eric Janssen

Ben Stiller wants to be the Gen-Y/Millennial icon of the bad-luck Self-Embarrassing Doofus, but in his own directed movies, he also wants to be the Angry Guy who's the lone voice of frustrated reason raging over everyone else's craziness...So, in most of his movies, like Mystery Men or Tropic Thunder, he usually tries to do both, and play the Angry Doofus. And yeah, think we already found out that Ash has a little discerning taste to her “outrageous” humor, by her having the good sense not to like Monty Python’s Meaning of Life. (And we know her “T’ain’t funny, McGee… 😒 “ face by now.) We sort of lost our national sense of humor, or at least the “wit” part of it, during the GWBush era, and now it’s hard to explain to an entire generation why Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller and “The Hangover” aren’t on QUITE the same plane as 70’s Mel Brooks.

Anonymous

I unashamedly love this movie. Just the zipper scene, the dog resuscitation scene, the hair gel scene, and the dog attacking while hopped up on speed scene made me laugh more than the entirety of most comedies. Sorry you didn't like it but humor is a widely subjective thing. There is no way to know for sure what a person will find funny or not.

Anonymous

But if kind of dark edgy comedy isn't your thing then here are some different romantic comedies from the 80's I would recommend. Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Can't Buy Me Love, Splash, and The Sure Thing. I think you would love any of them.

Anonymous

Should have watched Pretty in Pink! We tried to tell you 😂

Michael Buhl

I seems to me that this movie as a rom-com for guys, which is probably why I like it.

Anonymous

your hair looks pretty :)

Anonymous

Another GRITTY war movie is "Glory". Glory might be the closest historically correct war movie. It's based off the Colonel's letters. Very tough to watch but worth it.

JSharp

You’re not wrong. I hated it too when it came out. It was during the apex of the Gross-Out Comedy period, which included Dumb and Dumber and some Adam Sandler movies. Lots of diarrhea and vomiting. I hated those years.

Eric Janssen

To this day, I harbor an urge to punch out anyone STILL using "I just threw up in my mouth a little" after fifteen years, thinking they cleverly made it up themselves.

Anonymous

New favorite Hubs appearance. "Beans, you hunggy"?? 🤣

Anonymous

😬 That’s skating awfully close to being a spoiler.

Anonymous

I never wanted you to watch this movie. It sucks. I don't get it either.

Anonymous

Watch French Kiss. You'll love it.
