This is one of my absolute favorite movies. I had the pleasure of seeing this at a drive in when it released. I personally thought this had the right amount of direction. The right amount of action, comedy and adventure. I love this film because it is so stylized, it's a fun action adventure and has a really cool concept and wonderful characters. It's also got Bruce Willis who is one of my favorite action stars. Hope he's doing well. Another thing I loved for this film was the marketing. There were no real previews that I recall. Just very short teasers. I knew nothing going into this and I was sooo happy about that. Too often I feel trailers spoil movies before a person even has a chance to see them. Which is why I have since stopped watching them. Only rarely do I look for a trailer for a film. I have always been of the mind that the Fifth Element was in fact Love. The supereme being was designed as she was to be able to channel the light of creation. As I figure it a normal person wouldn't be able to channel all that energy. She was made as she was to be able to do so. But that's just been my interpretation of it.

She's definitely meant to be love. It fits the thematic message of the movie to a tee--that's the reason that aggression makes the dark planet grow and Korben swearing his love allows Leeloo to destroy it. There are a lot of places where you see this show up--Leeloo emphasizing consent when Korben kisses her, the place where the Diva says that Leeloo will need Korben's love, and the fact the mere idea of war undermines her power, but love revitalizes her. She's happy and joyous by default until each act of aggression in the movie, whether that's being held against her will or witnessing the Mongolors killing the Diva's people. This movie is pure chaos in many ways, but I adore the message behind it.

This is probably #3 in my all time Sci Fi movie list, I love that it is sci-fi but the future is the stage that they use to tell the story. In so many sci fi movies they kind of make the future the thing and not the story. I love the allusion to Ancient Alien theory and the way the director reveals the Elemental Stones by cutting back and forth between Milla Jovovich (leeloo) and Zorg (Gary Oldman). I love that it has a happy ending, I am sucker for those.... Give me a happy ending, every time... (If you know that movie reference I am simultaneously surprised and ashamed...lol) This movie came out when I was in the Army in Europe, my friends and I would watch it almost every weekend. When you go to the PX they would ask for your Military ID, so of course I would hold it up and say, "Multipass..." (I was in signal... we were nerds)
