watch Tenet Also. Plzzzzzzz

@adrian_r31

Just like with Tenet I can't stop watching this now that I own it. What a beautiful vibe this is. Seen it 4 times already.

@adrian_r31

Cillian is brilliant in Peaky Blinders. As well as many others it's an incredible show with great music.

@adrian_r31

Ludwig Göransson quickly becoming my favorite composer. Up there with Hanz Zimmer.

Alan Felicia

Great choice! Excellent movie & ready for the Re-watch! Would not be surprised if both Murphy & Downey gets Oscar considerations, as well as Nolan!

Ben Wheeler

Well there goes my evening 😆

Want more of cillian at his best ? Watch peaky blinders it’s amazing stuff

Slaizio

I watched this one in the cinema but with german dubbing. I'll gladly rewatch it with you, Natalie. Hope you liked it!

Andy

I did the #Barbenheimer double-feature loool. Watched Barbie at 4pm and Oppenheimer at 8pm on the Fri they released. I didn't dress up, but saw a few ladies in pink for Barbie going in for Oppenheimer too haha.

I left the cinema after watching this feeling sure that RDJ would get a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nom, and have a very good chance of winning. Second viewing I think maybe the win is less nailed on but still a great performance. Murphy I'd also imagine will get a nomination but it's harder to call whether he'll win. I kind of agree there should have been some cuts, if only for the sake of tightening things up a bit - at almost 3 hours it's definitely pushing it about as far as you can go for a theatrical release.

Mike Hell

Great film and I'm sure your reaction is good, too. I just watched it last week so I'll have to give it some time before jumping in again, but I thought it was "almost" perfect. Hope you liked it!

Tijmen ter Beek

I'm very impressed with how much details you caught! Took me more than one watch:) Though, theres two more metaphores id love to highlight: 1. The subplot with the Straus hearing was there to also show the mutually assured destruction, as both men lost their reputation. Just like nuclear war. 2. I believe the poisoned apple was a metaphor on how oppenheimer created the bomb but ended up being conflicted about it, just like the apple. Enjoyed the reaction! This movie was also just incredible in theatres. That shockwave hits hard:) Didnt catch Barbie on the same day but also enjoyed it on the next weekend Also the scene where oppenheimer talked Dutch left our entire theatre confused as we didnt understand any of it (being dutch). Turns out that was also kinda historically accurate as he wasnt a good dutch speaker haha. Apparrently Nolan just edited out random words to save time, making it gibberish... And on top of that it sounded more German than anyting

Anonymous

Great reaction! I believe that Christopher Nolan has said that the black and white sections are objective truths of what happened but the color sections are subjective from the point of view of Oppemheimer.

Rogier Oude Heuvel

Exactly this, I saw Speaking Dutch in Subtitles and I was like, yea dont know what that is, but it aint dutch XD

Rey

Man i can not find a physical 4k copy of this movie anywhere

Erik Stevenson

If you're interested in seeing a bit more drama from RDJ, you should check out Zodiac sometime!

Andy

On 2nd viewing, the narrative thread is actually quite simple for a Nolan movie. I mean it’s still 3 layers - Strauss confirmation talking about Oppenheimer hearing talking about the Manhattan project lol, but still…

Jordan

I just joined last week because I HAD to see your full length Sherlock reactions but this is such a fucking treat holy shit, so gassed rn🔥

Ben Wheeler

I was really hoping Gary Oldman would be recognized as President Truman! For me it was his upper lip that gave it away

Shadowen

My friends and I took the day off work and made an event out of barbenheimer. Did a boozy brunch then oppenheimer after that dinner and ended the night on barbie. Idea was lets end on something fun rather than the downer of nuclear bombs.

Sam Winkler

I hope that if you HAD recorded only your video reaction to the whole thing that you would have gone back and dubbed in all the audio 😂

Thomas Richter

I didn't like Openheimer much.

Giving it a rewatch definetly clears up certain plot points, has little details make more sense and at least for me I felt the scenes breathe a little more. I think you may appreciate the Strauss subplot and all its little details more on rewatch because it is alot of information but once you have the chance to unpack it all more it becomes clear what Nolan was doing. Cutting out some of it, especially the Rami Malek part would lessen the impact of not only Strauss's story but Oppenheimer's story as well because the two work together. It's incredibly satisfying when Hill puts Strauss is his place and is very necessary to show not only how he got denied but also the perspective of the scientific community. Also I thought the black and white worked great because it may have been more confusing if both were color. Giving it a rewatch definetly helped me appreicate it more.

The film needed every minute of this story, and every perspective and word spoken. It was the length it needed to be and Nolan did a fantastic job at sound and editing choices to keep engagement going. I understand this is just your subjective opinion, but you misunderstand, the B plot with Strauss was not "weak" like you said, and it was very needed. It was also not a B plot, it was THE plot. The whole point of this movie was about Oppenheimer sure, but most importantly it was about the liberties that were used to try to destroy his reputation after the war ended. That is literally why this movie is so important not just the fact that he is "the father of the atomic bomb" I just dont think you understood that which is why you thought Strauss perspective wasnt important when in fact it was the most important. This movie was about the Oppenheimer hearings from both main actors perspectives and then going to flashbacks to add context, its that simple. Honestly this is one of most easy to follow Nolan movies all things considered. PS. If anybody is confused about the color elements of this film, Nolan said the Black and white was the story being told in Strauss perspective and how the hearings on being recorded were in black and white as how it would be seen on TV at the time.

The affair with Jean also demonstrates his failure to think long term about his actions and their moral implications. It’s a ripple out from the Apple to the woman to the world. Kitty tells him he can’t commit the sin and expect sympathy when there are consequences which is what Strauss is also accusing him of.

Jacob King

Enjoyed the reaction a lot. I’ve watched it twice in the last 24 hrs so I’m struggling to have many thoughts but it wasn’t too long. At some point I would love to see a reaction to Asteroid City, the secret third movie in the Barbenheimer universe, it features nuclear tests, Margot Robbie making a cameo from an alternate reality, black and white narration sections, an equally stacked cast, stop motion animation, all the good stuff.

Jock

"HUGHIE!"

Per reddit, Dr. Hill was tipped off by the Aide after Strauss told him. Too me, this was not communicated well so i understand if people see that as a plot hole. Other than that, Nolan got me to sit down for 3 hours of complex dialogue. The man shoots out gems. Cant wait for his next project.

Darryl Low

Really enjoyed this movie Nat and enjoyed your interspersions along the way. Complex and intriguing. Reminded me a lot of Oliver Stone's JFK in it's approach. Weaving a long, complex plot and characters with big name actors. Thanks for picking this movie as your Friday Feature Nat. Glad that I finally got to watch this movie with you 💛

Andreas Pettersson

I find this movie so sad. I cried quite a bit during the "celebration" when i saw it in cinema and again this time. Maybe if his invention did end all wars to come it would not be as sad but the only war that could end all wars would be the one where no man is left standing. Great movie in my opinion but man it is so long for a drama. When i got up after the cinema a swedish saying came to mind, translated it would be something like "my ass tastes like wood".

Rod Reavern

Natalie's reaction was interesting -- she seemed quieter and less "reaction-y" than normal, presumably because she was so enthralled by the movie, which I totally get. I acknowledge that the "twist" during the Senate Confirmation hearing was a little melodramatic, but I believe the B-story was an effective framing device that afforded concise exposition via the narrator. Considering that the "climax" of the movie occurred at the end of the 2nd Act, the villain reveal was necessary to drive the drama to the conclusion. If that B-story was cut out, the ending would've been anti-climactic after the Trinity test. Oppenheimer isn't a perfect film and not Christopher Nolan's best, but it's still a great film.

Spencer Wattamaniuk

It also represents the MAD doctrine so the plot-line does fit the themes of the movie even if it seems melodramatic. Strauss ended Oppenheimer's career and his career was then ended in return.

Rod Reavern

That's a possible interpretation. Although, I don't think Mutually Assured Destruction was ever explicitly mentioned in the movie. I believe Wargames introduced MAD to the pop culture lexicon. I'm uncertain if the strategic defense concept of MAD had been invented during the time frame portrayed in the movie, so if MAD had been mentioned in Oppenheimer, it probably would've been criticized as a historical mistake.

WayneC

I think you would enjoy the film "The Imitation Game" Natalie. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, the mathematician/scientist that played a vital role in breaking German codes during WW2, and his life afterwards.

AC5555

For me it's a perfect film and Nolan's best. But I am a history buff, and I think it's a perfect book adaptation (to American Prometheus) and extremely faithful historical drama.

AC5555

I read the complete book, American Prometheus cover to cover before seeing this and experienced the fangasms a marvel fan would when seeing scenes brought to life and characters on screen. I was like he said the thing, did the thing every moment. I understood everythingg that happened and appreciate that Nolan followed through on adding so many details

JC Evitt

You watch Babrie first to get the bad taste out of your mouth so you can see real cinema

Oppenheimer actually did poison his teachers apple then got rid of it before his teacher could eat it. His son wasn't too thrilled they put it in the movie

These types of minds don't think or work like the rest of us normal people. My father worked with Dr Teller and was a student of his and I remember him and his wife coming to dinner at our home.

So I watched Barbie first, and then after an hours break walked into watch Oppenheimer, and in my opinion that was absolutely the correct way to experience it. Barbie in the cinema left me in a slight daze, and brought me up, right for Oppenheimer to bring me crashing down. If I chose the other way, i doubt I would have been in the right mindset to fully appreciate Barbie. My heart rate didnt settle until 3 hours after the film finished. For me the experience of the two films was stellar, and something that will sit on my psyche forever.

Some funs points: -Regarding the black and white scenes vs. the rest of movie. From what I've read, the black and white scenes represent a more cut and dry "black and white" perspective of events, from Strauss' lens who saw Communism as inherently evil. By contrast, Oppenheimer was never one to disown someone purely for having differing beliefs. And so his perspective is a rainbow of beliefs. Additionally, Christopher Nolan adds, “One is in colour, and that’s Oppenheimer’s subjective experience. That’s the bulk of the film. Then the other is a black and white timeline. It’s a more objective view of his story from a different character’s point of view." -Niels Bohr is played by Kenneth Branagh, famed writer/director/actor. He directed and starred in a great version of Hamlet, and also directed the first Thor film. He also played Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. -Also, President Harry S Truman is played by Gary Oldman. (Sirius Black, Jim Gordon) Yeah, so many, including myself, didn't recognize him either. Total chameleon.

I'm VERY disappointed Michael Caine was not in this! Seriously though, this cast was stacked! I wasn't fully prepared for the pace of this at the beginning. There was a lot of information thrown at us and it felt like it was cutting from scene to scene at a frantic pace. Either it slowed down or I became used to it about 30 minutes in and I was able to grasp what was going on better. Superb performances by Murphy and RDJ and also Emily Blunt. For someone who seems very mentally and emotionally strong naturally, she plays a depressive alcoholic very well. (see The Girl on the Train) As you said the sound design and the visuals were top-notch. I'd expect nothing less from Nolan. Strauss getting his comeuppance may have been a little heavy-handed (coming from both A and B stories) but it was still pretty satisfying. Oppenheimer was an interesting character. A bit narcissistic? Yes. A cheater and a womanizer? Yes. Personally likable? Probably not unless you were close to him. Open to all ideologies, yet fiercely loyal to his country and freedom for others. On an odd note. I read a book series years ago by Harry Turtledove called World at War. It was an alternate history series with both historical characters and fictional characters. One of them was Col. Leslie Groves (Matt Damon's character). He was portrayed in this movie exactly how he was in those books! I know I'm late to the comments. I waited until it was available for rent. Great movie and loved your reaction!

I've watched this movie three times already (your reaction being the third) first time I watched it in 70MM which was unbelievable and wish I could go watch but I love this film because it still applies today about the problems of War and just gives you a feeling how it could all go wrong. end of the world vibes. Cillian did such a wonderful job potraying a person that was troubled. just gives me chills everytime I watched this movie. your reaction was everything!
