Happy Thursday Nat. Been looking forward to your reaction all day and seeing how it was all done. I can't remember the ins and outs of it all 😀 Don't worry Nat, your secret is safe with the 98 people that caught you going live. Not even interrogation under hot lights or the use of thumb screws will get it out of us 😄 ha ha I loved the chess / operation scene. You were spot on Nat. Mark Gatiss who plays Mycroft wrote this whole episode. You always manage to squeeze in a "Secret Tunnel" meme somehow 😂 If you remember back to your movie reaction for V for Vendetta, it was about the 5th of November and Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot to blow up the houses of Parliament. Here in the UK we have have Bonfire Night on Nov the 5th to celebrate, and we always have a "Guy" who sits atop the bonfire and burns. Earlier in the episode, there were 2 kids pushing a barrow with a dummy in it shouting "Penny for the guy!" They're collecting money for fireworks and for the festivities. Thanks for a really fun Sherlock reaction today Nat 💛

Jeff K

Home from work since my son is running a fever and I was hoping to watch this reaction this afternoon, so imagine my delight and surprise when it dropped earlier than I expected! Also, I was wondering about that accidental live stream the other day that immediately vanished. Now I know, and knowing's half the battle.

Jeff K

Oh and Nat, one quick note: the woman who plays Watson's girlfriend is Martin Freeman's actual wife, Amanda Abbington.

silverarrow06

They were together when this was filmed (but never married) and are separated since 2016. 🙂

Jeff K

Oh really? Damn, I didn't realize they'd separated. Also never realized they were never actually married; I guess it's kinda like Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon back in the day, where they'd been together for so long I just had always assumed they had gotten married.

LightsCameraJake

it don't matter if they were married or not, it made for natural chemistry on set which is always nice to know

Jeff K

"Is this just a reference to V for Vendetta?" Not really; Guy Fawkes was a real person who tried to blow up Parliament. V in that movie is wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, in reference to the real historical person. So also, it happening on November 5 is very much intentional since it was in remembrance of what would probably have been the biggest/most impactful act of terror in British history.

Jeff K

Definitely agree with you on that one, Jake. It's the same sort of thing that made me love Higgins and his wife on Ted Lasso, knowing the affection and chemistry was real.

Great reaction! Well worth looking up Guy Fawkes & Bonfire night. Here in the UK 5th of November 'remember remember the 5th of November...' Guy Fawkes was infamous for a failed plot to blow up parliament with gunpowder and was tortured/executed in many ways - finally by being burnt in a bonfire. We tend to go to big fields on this night with a giant bonfire and Guy Fawkes effigy on top of the bonfire and let of fireworks etc.

jamesthevampyr

I might've caught the accidental stream that day. I felt so bad for Nat, I could feel her embarrassment. Not to worry, simple mistake. Nothing weird happend I promise :)

James Keller

Fun Fact: Sherlock Holmes' parents are played by Benedict Cumberbatch's real life parents.

John Cedar

I would wager less than 1% of Americans are aware of Guy Fawkes or the gunpowder plot

Jeff K

That's fair. I think I was vaguely aware of him, but never really looked into him until I saw V for Vendetta (and then read the graphic novel after). I would assume he's at least a LITTLE more known these days because of his mask being used in V and by Anonymous, though I guess people just see the mask and don't necessarily go in depth finding out what it represents.

Anonymous

That smile at the end kinda makes it seem like the weirdest possible thing happened, like she was dressed in an ultra realistic bear costume while singing show-tunes or something.

Daniel McGuinness

Guess I didn’t realise Guy Fawkes day was mostly a UK “holiday” but it makes sense. Bonfire night is every November 5th in the UK! The “Penny for the Guy!” thing is usually kids carry around a scarecrow which represents Guy Fawkes, real dude who almost blew up parliament (hence the Guy), and people can choose to put a penny in his hat, for luck or something idk, then at the end of the night the Guy is placed on top of the bonfire before it’s lit. Rip to a king who almost took out Parliament I guess 💛

John Cedar

100% the symbol has been overtaken by anonymous and people just assume it originated from V for Vendetta. Bit weird that they would take a symbol from a psychotic religious freak and not something from say, the French Revolution which was actually sympathetic, but the mask is so iconic it overrides that I guess.

Rosanne Stewart

This is one of my favorites! I don't remember ever laughing at this show more than in the whole revelation scene with John and Sherlock and Mary. You were suspicious of Mary because Sherlock did his whole analytical thing but I think that was just that it was the first moment he really looked at her. She regarded him with affection (although I agree, I would have been protectively furious if someone did that to my partner) and I think he just recognized her as someone important and not just this random new girlfriend of John's who would automatically dislike Sherlock and be gone in a few weeks. I freaking LOVE Molly Hooper. She's obviously still in love with Sherlock but she's sort of woken up. She knows there will never be anything romantic between them. So that allows her to actually know him a little better. She sees things about him that even John doesn't see and she's no longer nervous and flustered (well, not as much) around him. And it is just lovely to see Sherlock actually giving himself a mental shake sometimes and reminding himself to treat her kindly. The Doyle story where Holmes returned was The Empty House. Holmes revealed himself to Watson by disguising himself as an old, blind bookseller. They parodied that scene with the patient that John was convinced was Sherlock. And all the dvd and magazine titles were book titles that the blind man offered to sell to John. It was hilarious how British Birds became an entirely different thing here! There was no anger from Watson about the deception. He was a bit hurt that he hadn't been let in on the secret with Mycroft but he got over it quickly and helped Holmes catch the story's villain, Sebastian Moran, who was the very last of Moriarty's henchmen who was determined to kill Holmes. They set up a dummy to look like Holmes in the window of the Baker Street flat and hid in the empty house across the street, watching for Moran to show up and shoot "Holmes" through the window. Moran actually used the same empty house as his sniper's nest so they tackled him as soon as he shot the dummy.

I'm American but I googled Fawkes when I read Harry Potter due to Dumbledore's phoenix Fawkes. So I knew about him before I watched V for Vendetta.

OMG, we are back baby

Connor Ellis

It's not a V for Vendetta reference. The 5th of November is Guy Fawkes Night, or Fireworks Night. Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament on the 5th of November a few hundred years ago. It's an actual holiday here.

George Baxter

I guess we should forgive that... although V for Vendetta must clarify that V is literally trying to be the new Guy Fawkes... And if I HAVE to know what Thanksgiving is, why doesnt Nat know bonfire night!?

Jim Lent

They have two children together, both teenagers now, so they still have connection. And I believe they have said they're still close.

Jim Lent

I love Molly, too.

LightsCameraJake

Ill be honest, Nat, after all this time with Martin Freeman on screen, i don't think we can have enough, and after we get through all of Sherlock, we will need more though the likes of "The Hobbit" xD PS, Guy Fawkes was a real person who tried to commit a terrorist act about 400 years ago by trying to blow up all of parliament and assassinating the King. People celebrate him for his failure and the king at the time named the day of November 5th in remembrance for the failed plot. It was even celebrated in the U.S (13 colonies at the time) until the American Revolution happened.

Holly Molly!!

Asking for a 'Penny for the Guy' is pretty rare nowadays, but it used to be a way of raising money for the local community or events. Or even just kids trying to make some money. On the run up to Guy Fawkes night, people would wheel around the effigy they were going to put on the bonfire. People would drop some money in the bucket, as a donation. The money might be used to sponsor the bonfire and fireworks, or other expenses for the night, or might be used by whatever community, school etc, that was putting on the fireworks night.

Jeff Clark

We need the footage of that accidental stream XD once you've stopped cringing that is!

Jeff Clark

So the thing with Mary was Sherlock not being able to read anything about her, that's why there was literally hundreds of words with questions marks after them You should also look up the 5th of november...this episode wasn't a nod to V for Vendetta (well, the train part may have been) but the plot to blow up parliament was a real thing that happened hundreds of years ago.

Riolkin

Mostly it has to do with media representation. Thanksgiving makes an appearance in a lot more movies and TV shows that are viewed by the English speaking world than Bonfire Night. I'd say the information is semi-common here in the US, and a lot more people know about the Guy Fawkes mask that V for Vendetta made popular than know about the actual Gunpowder Plot. We history nerds know the difference, but generally people aren't required to study very much about British history here in US schools.

Logan Kerlee

Loved watching this episode with you Natalie! :) I didn't keep notes throughout because I just wanted to watch and because I didn't sleep last night so my typing would take all of my focus. xD I'm SUPER excited for more Sherlock, with you. :) The characters have all grown throughout the series and each are included in the show still. That's something that I really like about this show! hahahaha, yup, nope! These episodes are all the same length. It's just a LONG SHOW compared to our shows over here in the States.

Peter Rynberk

I enjoyed the intro about not having an intro 😄
