Happy Twosday Nat. Looking forward to more Korra today 😊 It seems like yesterday since we watched the first episodes of Korra. The characters have certainly come a long way since the sports arena of Republic City. It's all heading to the final showdown in the last few episodes. Really enjoyed you re-capping your thoughts on this really cool series Nat 💛

Nat, the reason episode 8 was a recap episode was because of budget cuts. It was either do that episode or lay off some of the crew.

YounesCuppino

Episode 8-This episode is a clip show because of budget cuts to season four, which amounted to the cost of almost a full episode. The creators opted to save money making a clip show rather than let go a significant number of crew members several weeks early. Here’s a link to Bryan's (co creator of Korra and ATLA) Tumblr post about this episode if you’re interested in reading it. https://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/103173899927/a-few-preemptive-words-about-episode-408

Nickelodeon slashed Korra's budget, so it was either layoff some staff or cut costs by making a clip episode. I've heard that episode was supposed to be a Kuvira backstory which I think would've been interesting. I hated that episode at first, but, upon rewatch, I think it's kinda charming. Evil Square conversation is hilarious to me.

Lemuel Daher

Oh I hope somebody warned her about the recap episode beforehand lmao

DOUBLE FEATURE DAYS FOR KORRA NEXT WEEK PLSSSS

Geoffrey of Monmouth

Asami S1: gets pissed at Mako for asking her to heat tea for Korra Asami S4: heats tea for Korra You know, it's like poetry, it rhymes. Episode 8 was supposed to be about Kuvira's backstory: how she was abandoned by her parents as a child, and how Su more or less adopted her but how she was despised by her adopted siblings (including Opal), which also adds to why she's acting as she is--she has severe abandonment issues and sees herself in her nation when Su refused to step up.

Daddy Bolin 😍😍😍😂

When you finish up this show, you should check out Gen V

Once this animated adventure is over, perhaps a more adulty animation is in order. Invincible!!!!! but you might be a little drained on super hero media although this one is bit more Hard in the same way the Boys is, so perhaps you can consider "The Legend of Vox Machina" it's more of a Dungeons and dragons themed show, and it should have massive gain in popularity due to Baldur's Gate 3

devin flynn

Gen V is nice! takes place in same cinema universe as The Boys. With a second season approved and they are nearly finished with the first one.

Alvin Everett

The reason for the clip episode is due to budget cuts. Either fire some crew members after production or make a clip episode, and they didn’t consider the first option. They were inspired by an anime, Samurai Champloo, to not just rehash old footage but overlay chibi versions on the clips to provide meta commentary & comedy. It’s cool to just see how far the characters have come, especially Korra (because people said that Korra never changed as a character, never struggled when she clearly did, and how awesome the villains, except Unalaq, are).

Alvin Everett

Nat, i’d disagree and say that Kuvira is a complex villain if you connect the dots. Zaofu was the perfect city to help the Earth Kingdom back on its feet, and people felt that Suyin was a natural leader and wanted her to help, but she said no even tho Kuvira knew they had the tools to help. She left and at first was genuinely helping the Earth Kingdom, then power started corrupting her and she became out of balance.

Norm

I just think its a recap episode before they get into the end of the series. Similar to the Fire Island Players episode they had at the end of Avatar the Last Air Bender. Obviously, that was a little more creative.

Ariana Mitchell

what's your philz order queen? im curious

Julian Lee

once again i must advocate for castlevania as the next animated show hehe its only 4 seasons and 32 episodes so a quick watch! the character development is really great and the villains are compelling to boot

K

To add, Korra is an airbender and firebender, with two methods of warming herself. Also she grew up in the South Pole. Asami thought she *might be cold* and made her tea.

Grace Severi

i dont think u remember but firelord izumi is zukos daughter :)

Charles Codina

Yup this and it’s the end of series clip show/recap episode like the ember island players episode from avatar.

Daniel McGuinness

Why did I get emotional at Tenzin and Asami gassing up Korra and not letting her sell herself short 😭 She really HAS came a long way in such a short time, that’s my queen!

Kevin Bartelen

The clip show episode is because Nickelodeon cut their budget in the middle of the season. They were left with two options, this or a real episode but don't pay anyone for doing it. I think they made the best of a bad situation.

Daniel McGuinness

So much healing in these episodes 😭 (mostly episode 9 lmao) But man I’m either in my feels or that Avatar Finale buildup hype is getting to me because I just felt so proud of all the characters 🥹 there’s been some peaks and valleys but team avatar have come so far and it’s great to see Also YES to Nat picking up on the Korrasami vibes 😂👀

Erick Calderon

Thank god you didn't waste a day with the recap episode and gave us two!

Jonathan Wood

I think Kuvera is focused on power for the sake of control. Unalaq was definitely focused on power to dominate. I also completely agree with you that Amon and Zaheer were much more compelling villains.

FatLittleButterfly

to be fair, we didn't get to watch all 4 seasons at a go in the past (: I also love how they made fun of Unalaq xD I see people advocating for shows and thought I would just throw one in here too! Leverage (5 seasons)

Emilie Mish

I'd definitely prefer The Legend of Vox Machina over Invincible mostly cause I personally am so tired of the superhero reacts.

Stephen Pettersson

Hi Natalie! Regarding episode 8: It's basically a recap episode for the entire show. We had one in ATLA as well, The Ember Island Players (the theatre episode in the last season), but this wasn't as well done. The reason for this is because of a lack of funding from Nickelodeon, and that production was starting to run out of money so they had to reuse old animations to make the whole thing come together. If there's something all LoK-lovers can agree on, it is that the greatest villain of LoK isn't Amon, Unalaq, Zaheer or Kuvira, but Nickelodeon.

Gabriel Curran

When will you be doing the rest of the episodes .... im going through withdrawal lmao

Ariana Mitchell

"the sky is even giving bi energy" korra and asami supremacy, they just make sense

Eric Wallace

Episode 8 is definitely a budget savior for animation and acts like the ember island players before sozins comet

TokyoLopez

what a weird remembrance episode, glad you did two episodes, and i appreciate it!

Alvin Everett

Natalie, please react to this. Alot of people in the fandom has said The Legend of Korra is trash or does not live up to The Last Airbender, and i’d like you to react to/or watch this video (it’s 3 hrs so you might want to do it in parts): https://youtu.be/iKANR8LVj-Y?si=h6ZZDnL-zT20aP3A

Peter Baker

DADDY BOLIN! XD

Robert Bonfante

Vox Machina is in my top 3 of current animated shows. I would definitely watch a reaction series, and I never get tired of watching reactions to it.

Robert Bonfante

Kuvira isn't as nuanced as Amon and Zaheer, but that's okay. I feel like Season 4 is really all about Korra -- how she deals with trauma and returns to power. So Kuvira is kind of a foil to Korra's personal development. Kuvira also is a weird reflection of Korra and the similarities between the two are noteworthy. I think it's fitting that Korra's final villain is a female of similar age and disposition. And while Kuvira might not be as complex or as interesting as Amon or Zaheer, she is still light-years better than Unalaq.

Gabriel Curran

I know I know. I just wish she would binge it so I could binge watching her binge lmao

Jason Blakeman

Hey nat. Episode 8 is a weird one. Fun fact it was actually supposed to be a Kuvira backstory episode. But bc of the budget cuts and bc of the fact this show is on the darker side, the show had to be moved to nickelodeon online while it aired instead of on TV. Therefore, the budget wasnt as big as they wanted. And so to make the end of the season as big and as great as they wanted they had to cut the backstory episode and create this filler. This way they could reuse older clips and save money for the finale.

Wayfaring Seamstress - Megan Kelly

So I was a huge fan of the show, followed along back in the day, and there was... a lot of ugliness happening in the form of executive meddling. So halfway through production, Nickelodeon cut the budget. In half. This was the only way to preserve the quality of the remaining episodes.
