Wanted to also post this here: My favorite theory. It’s original in my mind as I’ve never heard it anywhere else so here goes: Jaqen H’ghar is one of the main heroes of the show. How DOES the leader of The Faceless Men get so easily caught by Goldcloaks in King’s Landing? It’s because he planned to! Given that we know so little about The Faceless Men, I think he somehow KNEW it was Arya’s destiny to kill The Night King and therefore put himself in position to guide her to that outcome. To me, the best evidence is the last time we saw him. Arya does not become No One but declares herself “Arya Stark...and I’m going Home”. His reaction? A SMILE. Her going back to face off against The Night King was his ultimate end game.

The first time I watched this episode, I didn't turn up the brightness on my monitor and hated the episode. Today for the first time I am watching this episode on a better screen and maxed my brightness and I am finding the episode a tad bit better than before? Lord of Light to the rescue I guess. Lots of people, including myself, are not huge fans of how this episode is shot and directed. As another poster mentioned, strategy basically goes out the window, and there is very little effort to preserve ones army. I totally agree with this, and at the same time, I am not sure how you fight an endless wave of zombies in a blizzard. Do the best you can I guess? Which is kinda what the cast and crew did with this script. They did the best they could.

Hi Nat and here we are, almost at the end, only 3 episodes until we're done with it and we start a new journey, and thank you for your new reaction! 😄 It was great, laughters at times, tensions and tears haha (you were so worried about the dragons haha, and of course your emotional moments for some characters, always contagious for my heart, I feel bad for you 😢😆) Of course the episode has some "strategic mistakes" (I mean in a classic military way haha), and some script choices weren't "good or strange" but what's done is done 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, I really can't wait for your next video 😄 I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

It's actually like a whole different episode. There are characters in scenes that you didn't even know were there because they were just in the blackness with the rest of the background. I played around with some clips in After Effects to try and punch it up even more, and there are some truly epic shots that are just blackened into an empty void of nothingness for what reason I don't know.

This episode was filmed in 55 night shoots (pretty much sundown to sunup) over 11 weeks in brutal weather conditions. It absolutely wrecked the cast and crew but just shows the dedication and talent involved in the production and acting. The score playing during the climax of the episode is titled "The Night King" and it is my favorite score from the entire show. Imagine if the writing of this season was up to par with the production and music.

I will say that viewing this season through again on this run with you, I was very much able to enjoy it much more than the first time through. I do feel like the writers and showrunners took the cowards path by giving so many people plot armor through this. Remember what they said at the gathering? That true death is to be forgotten? I wanted that not to be an omen of despair, but a foreshadowing of victory! This was an opportunity to let the majority of our favorite warriors fall *as they should have* on the legendary front line combating *death itself*, defying armageddon, assuring their brightest possible legend... Poetically, this would let the survivors - the regular folk - inherit their myths and keep those legends alive as survivor heroes in their own right -they ALL fought their own battles through the long night!- surviving to rebuild with a new morning, a new chapter, to tell the tale of when life and hope and humility and new ideas and unity triumphed at great, and necessary sacrifice... New songs for the greatest heroes the world had EVER known... Alas. Still fun though. I'm enjoying it much more on a re-viewing, since the experience is a lot more loose and tempered this time around. See yas on the next one.

Once I watch this episode with Nat, I will be completely caught up to where I once was. I never bothered watching the last 3 episodes of the show after seeing this one. I've been told by many that that was a good decision. But, I'm willing to watch the last 3 in this format. Though from what I've heard of the outcomes of certain characters that I'll have a hard time enjoying it.

(Sorry for how long this comment is lol) I remember this being the episode where a lot of people turned on the show... when quite frankly the first two episodes before this are nothing but clunky exposition and surface-level subtext. This episode, though, is an action masterpiece even if I don't like the overall plot and resolution they went for. Even though it's a dark episode, I will NEVER understand the complaints that this episode was too dark. I know a lot of people had connection issues the night this episode aired because of how many people were trying to stream it at once. When a connection gets weak, the compression of the video increases to prevent it from stopping entirely and high compression happens to make dark scenes with lots of smoke, fog and fire look awful... and that's all this episode is. 🤣 A lot of people got of accused of hating that a strong female kills the Night King and I'm sure that was the case for a small number of jackasses out there. For me, it was the fact that Arya had absolutely nothing at all to do with the deep north/White Walker plot until this episode that makes it feel so empty to me. What's worse is that they planned to have Arya kill the Night King a long time in advance and still did a really clunky job with it. Some might have liked how she just flies through the air and swoops in to save Bran the way she couldn't fly through the air to save Ned - but I don't. Honestly, after season 6 her character barely has an arc other than creeping out Sansa in a different way than Bran creeps her out. Lastly, I just hate that Cersei never had to reckon with the White Walkers in any serious way. I would have preferred that the Battle of Winterfell was still won by our characters, but the Night King managed to escape south with a small force. A three-way conflict at King's Landing where all 3 sides want each of the other two sides dead and one of them is still a small but threatening undead army would have been so awesome.

Not sure if you've heard about it or read the comments about it but the reason these last 2 seasons were short was because the writers wanted to hurry to finish the show. This resulted in them basically cramming the end of the story into 13 episodes rather than about 4 or even 5 more seasons. They were offered the new Disney star wars trilogy and allegedly part of the reason they rushed GOT was so they could focus on that. Unfortunately for them after the back lash of the bad ending of GOT that star wars deal fizzled out.

I did liked this episode more this second time around. The first time defeating the dead army felt too "easy". I also felt a bit angry for them to get rid of the zombies issue in a single episode, after making it the mayor issue during 7 seasons... But now, I feel these were enough zombies for the whole show. I also spent 15 minutes calibrating the TV to be able to see clearly but maintaining the dark atmosphere. As I said, i enjoyed it a lot more this time around.

Lady Mormont's death is the perfect example of what was wrong with the last few seasons.. If this scene happened in season 3, she would have been stepped on by the giant, and that would be it. But this random ruthless dead giant killing people without a thought about it is like "hmmm let me pick up this little girl and see what she can do" come onnnnnnn

It just hit me while rewatching the series with you how poetically precise Theon's "YOLO" speech was back in Season 2 - even if not for that battle, but for this one: "[...] We die today brothers. We die bleeding from a hundred wounds. With arrows in our necks, and spears in our guts. But our war-cries will echo through eternity. They will sing about the battle of Winterfell until the Iron Islands have slipped beneath the waves. Every man, woman, and child will know who we were and how long we stood. [...]"

One of the craziest things about this episode is how it looks like literally every fighter other than our ~10 main characters dies. Like, those final shots after the army of the dead ... dies... show basically zero non-main-characters left alive.

Im not that bothered by it this many years later, it just seemed there was no great consequence to the “main characters” in this battle…I suppose where we ultimately end up it needed to be that way…but I’ll leave the complaints about the series finale for when we get there

I remember being so disappointed in this episode. And I still am. There were a couple parts that held up better than I remembered but overall and in many ways, I think Army of Darkness did this battle better, even though it's sillier in nature.

Most low and high fantasy shows/movies ignore their consultants when they feel like it. GoT isn't unique in that regard and sieges are rarely shown well. What bothers me more than anything is the lack of rondel daggers for any of the characters, which would have made the final scene of Brienne/Jamie/Pod a little more "realistic" in regards to the grappling going on!

The best way to fight them would have been with Wildfire. Wildfires bombs shot by trebuchet. Wildfire trenches surrounding the entire castle. Fire Arrows shot from the battlements. Dragonfire rained down from above by Jon and Dany. Set the whole land ablaze. Only select groups of their best fighters should be scouting the enemies territory in order to snipe a White Walker with a dragon glass arrow. Facing an unkillable army of the dead in an open field is a definition of stupidity. But I guess we need people fighting with swords in the big finale so that's what we got.

The war with the White Walkers isn't supposed to end in a single battle. That's not what we've been promised. It's supposed to last years. Death and cold are supposed to sweep across the land. A new Long Night was supposed to begin. The War of the Five Kings was supposed to be proven a complete waste of time. We should have been preparing for the Apocalpse coming down from the North. Winter was coming. But nah, the White Walkers were easy to kill, barely an inconvenience. All we needed was for Arya to teleport behind the Night King and "Nothing personal, Kid" him with her Valyrian Steel dagger she got 2 episodes ago. Very satisfyingly end. Worth the 8 seasons of build up.

We built up to this battle the entire series. Then when it finally happens, it doesn't carry any weight because the entire main cast, except Jorah, survived. Oh, and the WHOLE Dothraki army died. Crazy how they ALL just died, except the ones hiding behind the trees(wink wink). I almost wanted to call bull$h*t on her not remembering much of this episode, but then again, I watched the rest of the season and I barely remember that either. I know how it ends but forget how, I was, let's say nonplussed. I'm still and will always be a fan of the show, but, yeah I could take or leave the last season, apart from Arya getting the kill shot, I did actually jump out of my chair for that, was like Kirk Gibson hitting that walk off home run in '88. The way they shot it too, she appears like you knew she would, like no one out of nowhere, but NK stops her, cold, then that sweet drop knife stab prison shanking... Only wish we got to see his expression change, that was really unsatisfying for me. Also, I got the feeling when Bran and NK faced off that there was some truth to that rumor (fact?) from the books that NK was a Stark and a Lord Commander of the Night's Watch before the Kids in the Forest surgically but without anasthesia promoted him. I gotta read those books...

I kind of wanted to see Hodor in the army of the dead. Maybe even reach as far as Bran and have a final reunion. Also, Jon should have killed the undead dragon at the end. Maybe throwing the sword . . . Or maybe even finding out that Jon was fireproof like a proper Targaryen. I agree that more people seemed like they should have died. When this first played, I was expecting at least half of the people to die.

Why did they put the catapults on the front line? Why did they send the Dothraki to their death? Why do they hide women and children in the crypts when you are fighting an army of beings that resurrect the dead? What was Bran doing the whole time? How is that not a Single white walker did anything? If the Night's King wanted bran dead, why didnt he send some wights or other White Walker to do it? Why Arya is the one that kill him if she has nothin to do with that plot line? How did Jon survived after being surrounded by thirty wights? Shit, how did anyone Jaime, Brienne, freaking Sam survived? Remember Hardhome? I do.

This really is the Battle of the Dumbasses. The tactics are... awful. And the characters constantly make really baffling choices. And on top of all of that we can't see anything because its so dark! So much wasted potential. Its probably the thing that drives me nuts the most.

Having come back and rewatched this episode now, all I can say is that there is far too much in here that makes zero sense and is truly awful writing. Instead of writing a book here in the comments about everything that went wrong, I'll just recommend everyone goes over to YouTube and watches some of the hundred or so videos people have made that absolutely tear this episode and Season 8 as a whole apart. The score for the final confrontation is still my favorite piece of music Game of Thrones has ever written. I had chills when I first watching it

I don't get the hate for this season and season 7. Sure things had to move fast. All the storylines had converged. Did we really need filler episodes due to travel lengths? And most of your questions about how or why something happened the way it did can be answered with "this was what the 3-eyed Raven planned to happen" I think he had went back and forth in time and exhausted all options until he came up with a series of events that turned out like he wanted then he went back to ensure it all happened as it should. Maybe warging into several key characters throughout time to get certain things done. For all we know he could have been Jaqen Hagar. Or Bran the Builder. Or even warged into the boar that killed Robert. Or the Stag that killed the mother Dire-Wolf. Oh the possibilities that warging through time can offer. When he told Bran the past is written in stone you can't change it , he lied. (Old Nan told us as much) He had already laid the groundwork. What he was really saying is I've "fixed" the past, don't mess with it. A lot of people don't subscribe to this theory but in the end when he is asked if he will take the throne he replies " why do you think I came all this way?" It was always his intention to forge a new way of ruling after saving the living. Anyhoo I think a lot of people were mad because of Arya getting the kill on the big bad. They all had predicted Jon to do it. And people hate being wrong. Also a lot of Dany's fans were mad because she turned out to be a tyrant. Again prejudicing themselves against any other outcome other than Queen Dany the great.

Something a lot of people don't realize - when Jon stands up before the Night King's Dragon and yells, he's already spotted Arya and is distracting the dragon so that she can make it past. What he actually yells is "Goooo!" Some of the bigger issues that I had with this episode: 1) Basically the big bad of the entire series, from day 1, is over and done with in the first battle that we see him in, and with three episodes left to go at that. How much better would it have been if they had lost at Winterfell and regrouped at King's Landing for the final episode showdown... that would have created the opportunity for all kinds of cool things, including Arya wearing Jamie's face after he dies and using it to kill Cersei. 2) The Lord of Light and his followers, with all their prophecy of the great war, the only war that matters, the big showdown between the light and the darkness... and just one priestess shows up to participate. Just one bothers to show up despite the Lord of Light having shown the ability to communicate directly with his followers and showing them the future. 3) Bran does nothing. At all. He just sits there staring blankly... imagine if instead they cut to him warging in and out of various people throughout the series, nudging history this way and that to ensure that Arya is in that place at that time with that training to kill the Night King. Like warging into Littlefinger to hand off that incredibly valuable dagger to the assassin, or Jaquen Hagar during Arya's training or any number of others... shaping the past to create the present. At least then we would have had some kind of payoff regarding the much-hyped 'Three-Eyed Rave'...

Dude, I don't disagree entirely with your post (as you can see below), but you have got to edit it some. Why would you put such significant spoilers up like this so close to the finish line? To answer your post, we shouldn't have to fill in the blanks for what might have happened to make the episodes we got make sense. If they were going to do that with Bran then they should have showed that - it's kind of a huge thing to leave out entirely. And giving us a full season wouldn't have been to create 'filler'... they would have given us a chance to have Jon and Dany's relationship not seem so forced and rushed, heightening the true sense of tragedy later on. It would have allowed us to see the culmination of Bran's redemption and Yara's rescue as something other than a footnote. There are tons of plotlines that were left dangling that easily could have been resolved (or addressed at all) rather than ignored or handwaved, like what we see with Bron's 'resolution' that was a flat out insult to the character. Sure, all the eons of time that Martin left everybody hanging left them to fill in the blanks with their own theories, which in turn led to expectations that were ultimately disappointed, but if they hadn't shorted us 7 episodes worth of show, the vast majority of the issues most had with the final two seasons could have been easily fixed.

Theon's end in the Long Night was the best part of that episode for me, she said it and I completely agree, he had one of the best (and worst) story arcs in the show. And now that we can say things like "this show is all about the Starks" like it's the Brady Bunch in a very fucked up yet more reality based fictional universe lol. And Theon is included as a Stark and really also more of a central character than sometimes seemed.

"For the episode is dark, and full of plot armor." Okay, one positive thing I can say is that the HBO Max version of this seems considerably brighter than the live version a lot of us tried to watch a few years back. And yeah, I know someone said "compression algorithms make shows darker," etc., but the people at HBO aren't new to this, they've been making streaming content for a while now, they should know the limitations and technical ramifications of making a dark AF episode, and had to have an idea of how many people would be streaming. Anyway, it was nice to see most of what was going on this time (for the most part; I haven't actually gotten the last half to stream properly. *kicks HBO Max*)
