Hi friends!

So excited to start this new series with you all. I rented this movie on Amazon Prime for those who are curious.

You'll notice that I briefly mention a sponsor in this video. I couldn't really cut it out completely with the way I filmed the intro haha. So feel free to ignore that.

As always, thanks so much for your support here on Patreon and until the next one, ✨stay golden!✨

I think they’re all on Disney+

I think some of the xmen movies are on Disney plus

Anonymous

Was hoping for Catch Me If You Can, since it was runner-up in the poll before the Deadpool Poll....sigh, I guess I can suffer through the Fox X-Verse once again....

Aaron Lovik

As you go through these movies, you will notice plenty of inconsistencies. Please forgive them lol. Before the MCU, directors of comic book movies didn't much care about continuity.

Darryl Low

Awesome stuff Nat. Love how you keep us guessing. Not seen this movie for a good while, so really looking forward to watching it again and seeing what you make of it 💛 Really enjoyed your reaction to this movie Nat. After most of the lightness of the MCU movies, it's interesting to re-visit this film and see how much more serious the approach was. I thought the opening seen would hit you hard. Your man Toad was played by the same actor who played Darth Maul in Star Wars Ep.1. Really looking forward to watching the X2 with you. Thanks for all your fantastic work this week Nat. Have a great weekend 💛

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

X-men, First Class, The Wolverine, Logan, Deadpool 1 & 2, Darx Phoenix, and New Mutants are all not on Disney+

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 I'm excited to watch this film series. I've only seen one of the "X-Men" movies. It's going to be fun to finally see the whole series. I did notice that some, if not all, of the "X-Men" movies are on Disney+ as well. 😊 I'm downloading this right now so that I can watch it later tonight. Looking forward to watching this reaction this evening. Have a great day today! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛

Lucky Dragon ‘She.They’

Don’t be expecting this series to have strong continuity. At some point continuity flys out the window with this franchise.

Anonymous

I love Fridays because it's my off day and I can watch these immediately :D

DarkJokester

Been looking forward to this one and it didn't disappoint. Great reaction.. As to the question of how Magneto was flying.. you get to learn more about his powers throughout the series and by the end you will know. To explain it now would be meaningless since the movies will do that eventually :D

RustafanX

Awesome!

Anonymous

Oh and incidentally, yes: It's been a few years since the ''Merger'', so again yes: The one good thing we were hoping for finally happened: All X-Films are in fact available on Disney+. Hell; even Legion (FREAKING LEGION) season 1 is available on the States Disney+ App............................. Psssssssst Nat: React to Legion, pretty plz XD - Oh and long live capitalism or whatever.

Mike LL

For those scrambling right now, this movie is coming to Disney+ on August 7. I'm lucky my sister has a DVD copy here at home. Let the mutations commence!

Anonymous

Hope you enjoy the series! I've never been the hugest fan of X-men, but watched cos I loved the 90s animated series. There are some real gems along the way... and a few less then stellar entries too. Are you going to watch the solo films too? Logan is unlike any of the rest, but possibly the best one! (edit- seen the original post now :))

Travis

Deadpool has nothing to do with these movies aside from him poking fun at being in that universe. I think you’ll get the most out of Logan, Deadpool, and the first two X men reboots (first class and days of future past). There are a couple real stinkers in this series unfortunately. X3, Wolverine Origins, Dark Phoenix and Apocolypse are all varying degrees of not very good.

Anonymous

strange that here in my country all xmen movies are available on disney+

Myles Away

Wolverine Origins is a good-bad movie though. It is so bad that it passes the threshold back into entertaining. It is a lot of fun to make fun of.

Joe Blankenship

Yes! I'm glad you're starting off here.

Alan Kobb

Most of the X-Men films are available on Disney+, and eventually they all will be, but Fox had made some deals before selling to Disney that Disney has to honor. For example, Logan is available on Hulu in the US. From what I can tell, X-Men, The Wolverine and Logan are the only ones that are not on Disney+ in the US. The streaming agreements are different in different countries, so some of you may be able to see it on D+.

Ian

Saving this for tomorrow cheers for all the uploads this week Nat it's been a lot of fun, tears and laughter 🎉 have yourself a great weekend and until next week stay golden 💛

Not Amused

You should add Interstellar to the next poll

Andrew Polinski

I will say it right now i was never a fan of these x-men movies, coming from a childhood of original x-men comics as well as the animated series these movies were just a departure from what i knew at the time. Although if it wasn't for these movies we would have never gotten Logan as a film.

Len

That's weird, in my country these are all available on Disney+

chicks dig me

Are you suggesting we all rent this on Amazon?

Dave A

They're like angry badgers with the badassness of bears.

Simon Bauer

Calo Grsf

Thank you for this chill reaction! 😄 Yeah, you'll need some tissues for the next movies 😆 I can't wait to see you react to the sequel and get your opinion haha Even though the saga is far from perfect, and although I'm far from being an X-Men fan, it has its positive points. On that note, I wish you a great weekend, I hope you are well, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Travis

Just a small FYI X-men was created in the 60s as an allegory to the civil rights movement. Professor X is supposed to be a MLK character while Magneto is like Malcom X. The way the mutants are treated is paralleled to African Americans.

Travis

I forgot just how brutal the fight sequences are in this. Borderline unwatchable 🤦🏼‍♂️

Choof

I'm so happy and impressed Natalie picked up on the metaphor of the oppressed minority from the very get go on this. That being said the effects and choreography are abysmal, considering The Matrix came out the year before this so it wasn't unheard of to have good versions of both.

Valar Dohaeris

The terrible thing with watching any tv series after the DCU-Infinity Saga is that you will notice a lack of consistency, coherent world building, and most of the time a clusterf7ck or contradictions and unsolvable continuity errors. That doesn't mean you can't find the occasional entertaining piece. That of course of you aren't a X-men lunatic. In that case this is the best thing ever... Enjoy.

Waaaayyy this is gonna be a fun journey

Ellis Hugh

Ugh. These movies did not age well and they weren't all that great to begin with. Really makes me appreciate the MCU.

Tranquil_Gnome

Something I didn't know until a few years ago, Patrick Stewart worked with Famke Janssen, Jean Grey, on Star Trek Next Gen. She was the metamorph woman intended to marry another man but falls in love with Captain Picard on the journey to her husband. Great casting all around. I'm sure others will point it out but I think you missed the Stan Lee cameo. He didn't speak so it was easy to miss.

Navjot Singh

Regarding the part about how Magneto can fly. It was mentioned in the movie that he can control magnetic fields as well apart from metal. And since Earth is a giant magnet, he can use its magnetic field to propel him anywhere he wants to go by binding himself to its magnetism.

Mike LL

Read the comments, wait a week, there are alternatives.

Mike LL

Yes, its not the date the movie came out, it was the size of its small budget. With the success of this movie, they had a bigger budgets on the sequels.

Brian Jones

Still to date one of the most impactful opening scenes ever done in comic book films.

Daniel Vezina

besides Deadpools ,X2 -First class and future past are awesone

Jerry Gonzalez

These movies were my childhood, this is gonna be fun

Anonymous

"it's like forcing people to come out, when they don't wanna come out." DING DING DING

JayyDTR

There are some genuinely amazing movies in this series, i'd say some of the best in the genre. Of course as others have said there are definitely a few stinkers, but even the earlier entries have a charm about them I'll always love.

Joe Blankenship

Wolverine went up to the torch since he could survive the fall if they overshot it. Scott wouldn't.

L C

Aww Nat didn't get the yellow spandex joke. Check out the original art from the comics https://www.pinterest.com/pin/718605684275303763/

Valar Dohaeris

Yellow expanded joke explanation: https://uncannyxmen.net/sites/default/files/images/characters/wolverine/wolv-costume3.jpg

Kenton Kruger

That is what's good about the X-Men in general is the main fight between Magneto and Xavier is neither of them are actually "bad" in their core motivation, it's not the evil "I want to rule the world" type comic book motivation. Some characters lose or gain faith in humanity and switch sides, people have their own personal motivations, etc. It makes for compelling storytelling. The movies do lose that after a while. As for what you were trying to explain what you understood people to be saying about these movies in the beginning, this movie was the transition between comic book character movies being meant for kids, and trying to make a more adult friendly type of film.

Boomcity

Yeah, visually this film didn't age well. But from here on out the films get better.....ish. haha

Anonymous

This is by far my favorite reaction of yours so far. Watching someone discover a whole new series from the start was pretty awesome, specially a series I've loved since I was a kid :) It's true that the series is uneven, but the good movies are VERY good. The "bad" ones are at least entertaining.

Ilsuk Yang

Yeah, different regions of the world get different movies/tv shows. Here in the US, we only have a few X-Men movies on Disney+. You'll also have different movies/tv shows on other streaming platforms that we don't get and vice versa. That's why a lot of people use vpns in order to watch movies/tv shows they can't get in their home country

Anonymous

MCU: "In order to alter previous continuity, we have spent years setting up the rules and mythos of a cohesive multiverse, and now we can play with alternate possibilities" Fox: "Lol we just ignore the previous movie and we're good to go!"

Endling_king

i loved watching these movies when they first came out. i still enjoy them but for more nostalgia point of view. kind of like a comfort movie. I was always a big fan of the Wolverine comics and would watch the cartoons from time to time. so when this came out and i stared Hugh Jackman as Wolverine i was super excited. if you watch some of the behind the scenes videos for the making of this movie, the cast HATED those leather costumes. the could barely move in them. at one point they even had trouble jumping over a little concrete divider while wearing the costumes because they couldnt move enough in them. Im really looking forward to your reactions to the rest of the series. it gets better as they come out. not everyone is a fan of certain movies but personally i loved all of them.

Mr. Nobody

Magneto FORCED his mutant theology on Senator Kelly without giving Senator Kelly a choice which caused him to die. Above all else people should give other people a choice. We cant force someone's belief on someone else.

Anthony Campbell

I wonder why its not on Disney + but the others are?

Anonymous

I have a soft spot for this since I think it was the first real superhero movie I saw in a theater.

Ortizmo2000

Dammmmmmmmmn....haven't watched this all the way through in 20 years (saw at theater opening night). This should be fun. I could be mistaken but I think I also saw the teaser for Raimi's "Spider-Man" the same night.

Myles Away

I hope these reactions get real honest. I know the Game of Thrones audience on here just wants you to praise the show but I'd love to see some good critical reactions to the Fox-Men series. There is some good stuff and some really bad stuff. Please don't be afraid to say you don't like something. Most of us will likely agree.

JohnnyBGoode

Fun fact: Hugh Jackman came from a tradition of theater acting and was doing traditional animal imitating exercises to work on the physicality of the character, but he was primarily watching videos of wolves. Being a native Australian he had no idea that a wolverine was an actual animal unto itself, and he was weeks into this before the director corrected him.

Jayson Phillips

So happy you got into this series!! The Toad actor is the guy that played Darth Maul in Star Wars

Erik Stevenson

The answer to that is almost definitely an incredibly boring subsection of a distribution rights contract.

Ellis Hugh

I'm sure it's too late at this point, but there are SO many better things to watch than these old, dated, now de-canonized films. The Deadpool movies are a must-watch, but you don't need to watch the X-Men movies to enjoy them.

sammi

If anyone needs help syncing the reaction to the movie on Disney+ or Amazon Prime you can try out this browser extension that I developed: https://www.casper.live/ You can pause and jump around in the reaction and everything is kept in sync. My recommended "offset" for this reaction is 197.9.

BJ Stephens

Wow, just wow! Just because you think they're dated and unimportant isn't a reason for her not to watch them. /smh

Baron

Thank you Nat, such a great reaction! It is going to definitely be a journey watching these movies with you. My personality makes me want to explain stuff but I am not going to, you are going to discover it all as you watch them I am a huge supporter of people knowing as little as possible going into watching stuff. The movies I have enjoyed most I haven't known anything about. Could we maybe refrain from telling her anything about the future movies, like which ones you think are good or bad, let her make up her own mind, as she watches them. I can't think of anything else about your comments for this movie except to say you did a great job! This was never one of my personal favorites, but watching it with you was fun. Looking forwards to the rest of the journey. Till next time.

Quarty

Jennifer Lawrence? Sir Patrick Stewart OBE? No? Nothing? No? Ahah... looking forward to the rest of these. UNLIKE the MCU, I haven't watched the X-Men films in many, many years, so this is a welcome watch for sure!

Quarty

Excellent idea for a build, nice one. Huge potential for expansion. Bet you could even auto-sync eventually if creators use a blur like Nat does. Good luck with the project!

john collins

I don't want to spoil anything but not all of these movies are like the Marvel movies where they all tie into each other, you'll understand more once you make to a certain point.

Anonymous

Isn't is available on Disney+ in the Us?

Gryff

Only X-men Apocalypse, X-men Wolverine, X-men Days of future Past and X-men Last Stand are available as far as I can see.

Denise Mullin

Hi would have assumed you would have used Disney+ for the x-men series rather then renting on prime. AS usual Nat, a gold standard reaction. Bravo. After reading more comments I realize that content on different platforms are different in other places. Dang the streaming wars.

Anonymous

I was not expecting this today and I couldn't be happier to see it. Can't wait for you to get to more X Men :D :D :D

Reid Ellis

+1 for Legion! It's in the X-Men universe, but still.. separate.

Doug Watson

If anybody has a VPN, just change it to outside the U.S. I chose the U.K. and the first X-Men is there.

Reid Ellis

Even better is Wolverine's original outfit in the comics: http://www.90scomics.com/uploads/2/0/7/8/20783050/wolverine2_orig.gif

Kevin Bartelen

Wolverine had to be the one to get pushed up to the torch by Storm and Jean because they were likely to miss, and if they did Scott could still blast the whole device and save the people below. If they sent Scott and missed, not only would he have died from the fall but they'd have nobody who could do anything else about the device.

Pokerpope

Yeah it's on the Uk one (speaking as a Uk'er I can confirm)

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

Until the 1990s, or so, i read the comics that these movies are built from. But when you watch these the first time, you're catching things it took me multiple viewings to catch. What i am saying, basically, is that you're a mutant. And we wouldn't have it any other way. A golden mutant.

Anonymous

After you finish the X-men movies you’ll have to do the Sam Rami SpiderMan movies as well. And one of these days you’ll have to go back to The Godfather of them all, the Christopher Reeve Superman movies.

Jason Dolan

Within 7 minutes Natalie totally decodes the X-MEN analogy for being homosexual, different, etc

Shadowcat

Except that wasn't Jennifer Lawrence. Not yet. She plays young Mystique. This was Rebecca Romijn.

Aaron Chandler

Still not a fan of X-Men, but, I do feel like Natalie owes a very heartfelt and sincere apology to Bobby. #BobbyWasFramed

Anonymous

This movie really set the table for the modern wave of superhero movies. Its approach to mutants as an allegory for racism and discrimination showed that the genre could address serious issues and real-world subjects, allowing later movies like The Dark Knight Trilogy and the MCU to approach thoughtful themes. Also, the MCU likely would not have existed at all, as one of the reasons Marvel Comics was able to pull themselves out of bankruptcy and eventually create Marvel Studios was from the money they made from selling the film rights for the X-Men to Twentieth Century Fox so these movies could be made. Also, Kevin Feige got his start as a film producer working on the X-Men films, and he'd eventually become the mastermind of the MCU and the most successful producer in the world because of the lessons he learned from his involvement with the X-Men series.

This_Jedi_crafts

I was like "Darn - that actor who plays TOAD seems familiar! Had to look him up on Google (for cast credits) but glad you confirmed it. The way he handled that long metal rod - like a lightsaber, I was like, "Wait a minute!" So cool!

This_Jedi_crafts

Forgive me if someone already shared something like this but I think Marvel is planning to bring "The young X-Men" (from the comics) to the MCU - Thus, the weird "introductions" of Wanda's kids - who were supposedly in the comic version of the young X-Men. I never followed comics (my parents wouldn't let us read them) so I'm not an expert but I trust Marvel (Disney) to weave something cool together. SO excited for Marvel's "What If" series.

Sir_Dalagad

Natalie: "Wolverine is pretty good" Wolverine (with his favorite line in the comics): "I'm the best there is at what I do."

Kathryn Harvey

"Some people have told me they're even the first superhero series of movies" was today years old when I realized the first X-Men movie predated the Raimiverse Spiderman trilogy

Kathryn Harvey

also I don't know when Anna Paquin intends to actually visibly age but apparently not in the past 20 years

Kris Olo

I wasn’t looking forward to this series. I’ve seen all the movies. Only like them, never loved them. I think the payoff towards the end will be worth it. I hope Nat understands that the Marvelverse and it’s continuity exists because of X-Men and it’s ability to tie in movies, despite its inconsistencies. And because of that, we have The Mandelorian and potentially an expanded Game of Thrones universe and others. The fox-verse deserves its credit.

Kris Olo

Also, I can’t seriously be the only one who wants a Dragonheart reaction. Please like this comment if you’d love it too. So f’n classic.

Ortizmo2000

"this Toad guy is really creepy". He's also Darth Maul.

Misty Crom

One little joke that seemed to pass you by (understandably) that always makes me chuckle; Cyclops' "What would you prefer? Yellow jump-suits?" was a joke about the comic book X-Men outfits, the whole bit more or less answering why they decided to change them from that. The one bit that's always kinda bothered me with this was when Rogue drains Logan's powers at the end, why do the already healed wounds somehow re-appear? The fight was minutes ago, his body already healed them fully. Surely just any injury he takes between then and his healing factor kicking back in would not heal until then?

Misty Crom

Also that he only had something like 3 weeks to prepare before the start of filming since he was like the 4th choice for the character, and was only asked after someone else recommended him, so all the shirtless scenes were filmed last when he'd had time to bulk up more. Also very serious testament to how good he was as the character that no-one cared about the 6'3 and not hugely muscular Hugh Jackman playing the canonically 5'2 and very muscular Wolverine.

Ortizmo2000

You are going on SUCH the roller coaster from here to "Deadpool". ;o)

Anonymous

I LOVE Dragonheart! Not the sequels... just the original. I hope she adds it to her list!

Michael Mammano-Cheydleur

This movie was where Sirs Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan first worked together, and they've been best friends ever since. Their bromance is super adorable. Watch any video with the two of them -- LITERALLY ANY VIDEO -- and try not to totally love them.

Thomas Malley

You missed the Stan Lee cameo because you were so shocked by Senator Kelly being made out of jelly. Also notice the X in the 20th Century Fox logo gets accentuated more and more for each passing film.

Thomas Malley

Maybe she'll sprinkle Catch Me If You Can in there somewhere. I wouldn't mind some more Spielberg / Hanks movies.

Thomas Malley

I think it was the famous removed twin towers/bank heist ad which was an unusual trailer to being with, since it was shot only for the trailer.

nexus

You should watch the wolverine one next to get the back story of logan

Ryan

One thing this movie did right was their casting of Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen for Magneto and Professor X. Those two always brought such gravitas to those roles. The best thing this movie did the was making Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters an actual school. The comic X-Men lived in school as well but it was rarely shown to have many classes or a large student body. But the movies leaned into that aspect of it quite well.

Michael G. Munz

I've seen this movie multiple times, but hadn't really watched it since pre-Iron Man, so I never noticed Stan Lee before watching along with Natalie here. I all but jumped off my couch.

Nicholas Hentges

Not all of these will be good movies, but you may enjoy ones that really divided fans just because you dont have the comic book knowledge to be disappointed by what you see. Some of them are truly great, just be prepared for at least 1 absolute dud (possibly 3 or 4 though). They are still a large reason comic book movies are a multibillion dollar industry today.

Jenny Tolls

Can’t wait to see you watch Logan!

Cripkie

My mum loves Hugh Jackman and that's saying something because she doesn't really like most men. She used to watch him on stage in Australia before he hit the big time in America.

NationOf

these movies aren't nearly good enough to justify bryan singer's rampant pedophilia

Anonymous

Nothing justifies that. However, that has nothing whatsoever to do with the films. You do understand that it is possible to like a film regardless of the film creator's personal (and horrible, yes) proclivities, right? For example, I will never condone how Joss Whedon has supposedly behaved on different film sets, but I still absolutely adore Firefly. And I probably always will.

Cripkie

Most men instinctively have a savior complex. You mix that with social minorities like mutants in this case. Thats a recipe for box office sales. That said I liked it. Patric Stewert, I mean enough said :).

Kal-El_138

X2 (X-Men 2) is on Disney+.

Mitchell Bowker

In the year 2000 when the epic superhero final showdown takes place in a gift shop.

Kevin Mowery

It's going to be an uneven ride, but hopefully worthwhile to get to the Deadpools and Logan. Also, continuity is a really loose idea in the X-Men movies, so if something happens later that contradicts something from these movies (and a few things have already been said or shown that will be contradicted in later movies), don't worry about it. Understanding the dips in quality, and the changes to continuity, of the X-Men films really requires understanding the backstage politics at Fox, and it might be easier to just shrug and ignore it.

RebRox65

I still puts a smile on my face seeing Darth Maul as a Toad.

Anonymous

Hey Natalie, please watch First Man with Ryan Gosling soon I would be so happy

Anonymous

Exactly. A lot of my own issues with some of the "bad" movies in the franchise come from being disappointed with the adaptation of key plotlines or characters, but I doubt they'd bother someone new to the series. Really looking forward to revisiting these through a newbie's eyes.

Anonymous

I have a lot to say about the X-Men movies. But I don’t want to be a major downer here. I wasn’t going to watch this, but I wanted to see how you’d react compared to the MCU stuff. Especially since you don’t have a background on them, I wanted to give it a fair chance watching with someone who doesn’t have the “comic fan” mindset I have about these characters. The X-Men are my all time favorite comic characters, and while this movie (and Blade) really paved the way for the MCU, I was sorely disappointed. That doesn’t mean I don’t see the good things in it. It’s just a shame that the director was so hell bent on making his own thing that he didn’t let the cast look into their characters comic personalities. That said, the opening scene hit like a ton of bricks. I had forgotten how powerful that sequence was. Of course Jackman is fantastic (partially cause he’s him, and partially cause “someone” snuck him Wolverine/XMen comics in set.) And Stewart and McKellen deliver amazing performances. I am really hopefully that the MCU reintroduction of this corner of the Marvel Universe will do them justice. I won’t say more because it would get into spoilers for future movies. I’ll just say that Rogue is my all-time favorite character (of all fiction) and I’m eagerly anticipating the day she finally gets to be in a movie.

Obsolyeet

Yeah, I'm anxious that the MCU has something special planned for the return of the X-Men. Literally billions of dollars on the line if they get this right.

Tiger Chu

Logan is set well after all the X men movies. If you want the movie about wolverines origins it would be X men Origins: Wolverine

Joe Blankenship

These movies are definitely “of their time” and special effects have come a LONG way. But I remember them being amazing as a teenager.

Thomas Yanez

I disagree. The bad ones, like "Origins : Wolverine", are a nut punch combo of WTF and despair.

Anonymous

I was pleased to see how quick you picked up on the parallel of registering mutants as opposed to forcing someone out of the closet, or discrimination against various groups. The X-Men, from the very early days in the 60s, were always an allegory for minority and disenfranchised groups, especially LGBTQ community.

Anonymous

After the disastrous later Batman movies, people thought superhero movies were over, but this movie revived the genre

William Connery

I’m a huge fan of the X-Men and other than X2 really can’t stand any of the fox X-Men movies they’re just so bad and deviate from the source material to a degree I can let go, the early 90’s animated series is far superior

Hannah Mather

I am THRILLED that you are doing this whole series! Your reaction to this was excellent, enjoying what the movie is setting up even though its so obviously dated. Not every movie is amazing but I believe as a whole, the series absolutely is, and you need to experience even the worst ones to really get the most out of it. Cant wait for more!

Opti_Frog

Blade paved the way for X-Men, but X-Men and Spider-Man paved the way for everything that came after, and made superheroes really big business. X-Men is good, but X2 is still one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Chris H

The difference between Xmen and X2 is really something. Everything is amped up x 10 and Hugh Jackman had a bit more time to prepare! Plus Brian Cox, im excited to watch it again.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Regarding Toad. He was played by Ray Park, who also played Darth Maul In The Phantom Menace. (Though the voice of Maul was Peter Serafinowicz) I think there's a little nod this towards the end of the movie when Toad has that metal pole that he wields like a staff, in a manner similar to Maul's double bladed lightsaber. And Ray Park himself also has martial arts training. Regarding the whole "Do you know what happens when a toad gets struck by lightning?" line, that was originally scripted to be a much longer gag. A previous script had Toad constantly making these little quips with each encounter "Do you know what happens when a toad blah blah blah?" each time he fought the X-Men, with Storm's line being the punchline, as she's tired of his schtick. But all of that was cut, and so we're just kind of left with this punchline with no setup. One thing I'll say as you move forward, this series occasionally have continuity errors. It wasn't always the tightest series, and unexplained retcons happen every now and again. And that may not necessarily impact your enjoyment of the series, but they are there. And I tend to take them in stride.

Joel Palenychka

The X-men series of movies have their ups and downs. Sadly, in my opinion, more downs that up. There are a lot of details in the films that relate back to a comic book knowledge that non-fans will just simply miss. X2 is better, but I liked First Class because of the greatly improved characters and stellar cast.

Obsolyeet

They already confirm in this one he can control magnetic fields as well as the metal itself. Specific enough to explain how he did that but vague enough to leave the door open for future scenes of him using powers.

Obsolyeet

"She's not even going to get a chair. She's just gonna do it on her knees." (Natalie's face shows instant regret) Yep, heard it as soon as I said it..... You know Hugh Jackman did a good job but the Wolverine we all deserve would have been a younger Glenn Danzig!! The guy is already 5'3" so it's perfect. He could grow those mutton chops in about an hour, had a pretty cut physique back in the day, and he is completely badass. Like so many things in life, the timing just wasn't right.

YodatheHobbit

X-men more grounded than current MCU??? GRITTY??????? HAHAH! A couple of them a a little gritty, but that's if you count scowling faces as "grit". Don't get me wrong, a few of them are great films, but overall... BAHAHAHAH!!!! They're more cheesy, they're more cliché, they're more retreading of the same stories over and over again, fairly simple plot concepts, humor's a lot less clever and more silly, but they were all we had till better superhero films came along.

YodatheHobbit

Hahaha, his acting would have been shit. He's a badass like the boogyman's a badass.

"My mum loves Hugh Jackman and that's saying something because she doesn't really like most men" - Huh, i don't really know what to do with that information about your mom :D

Kate Herzig

Dude, she's allowed an opinion. She gets to judge these films for herself. It's okay to not agree, but relax! We'll all see where she ends up at the end of this journey.

Natalie…um…er…gulp…but you’re probably going to kill me for pointing this out, but X-men is on Disney+ (That’s how I’m following along) (hunches down and runs to hide)

I’m an idiot! I haven’t watched these in forever, so I’ve been trying to figure out where to stream it. Then I was reminded… I OWN the movie! It’s been THAT long since I’ve seen them. I fight I have ‘em!

Some of the X-Men films are not on Disney+ in the US, because of deals that existed prior to Disney buying Fox. Maybe be different for other countries, though, I believe.

I do like the touch that the senator is turned into a spineless jellyfish :)

Some people have likened Eric and Charles to Malcolm X and MLK, fighting for the same cause but using means that are sometimes diametrically opposed. I find it interesting that as a concentration camp survivor Eric has espoused the philosophy that he as a mutant is part of a race superior to homosapians. It's as if he adopted the racial philosophies of his childhood tormentors.

Hope you caught the Stan Lee cameo (if nobody else has said… he’s got a definite cameo)?

Ashley Faith

did NOT know that about the Toad line, it always irritated me as so lame

The movie that launched Hugh Jackman into stardom. Also the first movie that made "comic book movies" mainstream. Yes there were others, and yes I know about "Blade," but none of them had the same impact on society as this one. This was the true birth of the modern comic book movie era. Some trivia: - Hugh Jackman wasn't in the best of shape when he auditioned. But when he saw what Wolverine looked like in the comics, he dedicated himself to working out and they filmed his shirtless cage-scene last so he was at peak Jacked-ness. - Hugh was a last minute casting choice. The person who was actually going to play Wolverine was Dougray Scott. He got cold feet, figuring this "comic book movie" was going to bomb and decided to drop out and go be the bad guy on Mission Impossible 2 instead. I wonder if that decision keeps him awake at night. But to be fair, comic book movies were absolutely a huge risk at that time. -James Marsden is shorter than Hugh Jackman and Famke Jansen. Any scene with the three of them has James standing on a box so he appears to be the same height. - Sir Ian McKellan began working on this movie around the same time as the Lord of the Rings movies. Both of which had many, many fans assuming they were not going to be very good. (Especially when fans heard that "horror director" Peter Jackson was at the helm) It was a really great gamble and payoff for him as well.

I was today years old when I finally noticed Stan Lee in the movie! I can’t believe I never spotted him before! And I saw this the day it came out so I’ve been watching it for over twenty years!

One thing that occurred to me about these early Marvel movies: the first ones are pretty good. Blade, X-Men, Spider-Man, all very good films. Then the sequels come out and the bar is raised so high because those movies were so fantastic! Then the third movies come out and they not only DON’T go over the bar, but knock it down to the ground and then try to go underneath it. Basically, in a nutshell, the third films suck!

Ben Violette

Funny you mentioned being reminded of Firefly. Joss Whedon was called in to do punch up on the script and add more banter and jokes

Jomero

That, and it was a dig to all the "fans" who were complaining online (before the movie released) that they weren't going to put the actors into comic-accurate attire. If you weren't there or too young enough to remember, trust me... it was a thing.

So, Toad is played by Ray Park who played Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (Episode 1). He's a wonderful martial artist and I wish they could've used him more in that capacity (there's some good stuff in here for sure, but not enough for a guy as talented as he is). Sir McKellan (don't think I spelled that correctly) is such a great actor! You can see how different Magneto is from Gandalf and how he's able to bring these characters to life! So this movie is from 2000 if I remember correctly so the effects haven't aged very gracefully. Anyways, X2 is next and it's one of the best (in my opinion) of the entire series! My favorites from this series, in no particular order, are X2, X-Men: First Class, Logan, X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut, and the two Deadpool movies. I hope you enjoy going on this X-Men adventure!

I'm a new patron and I've always been curious how these watch throughs work. I am really excited to be here in time for the X-Men movies! So underrated, I'm certain you'll have a great time watching!

Paul Gibbons

For people wondering why the effects were a little ropey it's because post-production was rushed as Fox moved the film up by 6 months as they had no slated summer release so there wasn't enough time.

Logan Kerlee

Made me so happy that you enjoyed this! This was by far my favorite movie when it first came out. :) I was 12 years old at the time and I believe that I was recovering from a surgery at the time, so I spent the time at home. I wasn't able to watch this in theaters for one reason or another, but I was gifted it on the following holiday or birthday. Whatever, whatever.. your reaction was so fun to watch!! You clearly don't have a background in anything X-Men. Growing up, I did because of the cartoon/comics. I nerded out hard on all of Marvel as a boy. PLUS my name's Logan so of course Wolverine was my favorite character. xD This movie here really hits me in the feels for many reasons throughout. The discrimination that the mutants faced,, the hard times that they all went through, even the children. As a dude that grew up as a disabled person I grew up differently than most. I know what it's like to be seen as different, not like everyone else. Having other strengths that they will never understand while also facing challenges that they also will never grasp. Mutants really pull on my heart strings. The way that this film was executed, showing the pain that Magneto felt during his time in the camps or the way that people reacted toward mutant kind in general was best shown in this movie. All of the others fell short. You can judge that for yourself after each of the following films, but it's something that I'd really like your take on. This movie felt grounded and secure, as though it wasn't afraid to show a difficult thing to understand. Could it have been done better? Of course it could have, but after watching the next movies I'd like your take on it all. Sorry for rambling on and on. :P Super enjoyed this reaction! :D

Supposedly, Fox initially wanted to shelve the movie entirely. Producer and all-around cheap and meddlesome bastard Tom Rothman supposedly didn't like the X-Men property and didn't want to release the movie at all. And when the film ultimately got released and a sequel was greenlit, he stepped in and slashed X2's budget. It's honestly quite remarkable that both films turned out as well as they did when one of its own producers seems intent on sabotaging them.

The reason Wolverine had to be flown up at the end was just un case Strom missed her target and dropped him off the statue he would survive whereas Cyclops would have been mush.

A Vicarious View

I almost forgot. Did you catch the Stan Lee cameo in this movie? He was next to the hotdog stand on the beach when Senator Kelly walked up naked. He's not in all the X-men movies and it's sometimes harder to find because they aren't speaking roles. This was before the MCU really focused on his cameo's. He's in: X-Men X-Men 3: The Last Stand X-Men: Apocalypse (with his wife) Deadpool Deadpool 2 (sort of)

Jordan Love

Can i just say that i love that Nat made a Thunderdome reference?

Laura Thornley

You 'can' skip ahead to Deadpool, but you'll get more out of it with prior knowledge of the universe. You won't be wondering "who is this and why am I supposed to care about them?" or "where is this and why does it matter?"

Wow, thus begins the X-men journey! Waiting for you to react to Logan is going to be like waiting for you to react to Endgame after watching Ironman. Gonna be a while but still worth the journey through all the movies. Great reactions as always.

Shen V

Wow, I hadn't seen this movie in like 10 years or so; this was such a great way of rewatching it. All the other watchalongs I did are mostly fresh in my mind. So glad you're doing these. I'm very interested how her overall reaction to ... the bad one is. Also, here's a spanner in the works for when you wanna watch Deadpool: Watch Green Lantern first. Mwahahaha!

Interesting bits about this one: That scene where Bobby (aka Iceman) convinced Rogue to leave had an accidental element about it. The film crew shot that scene with Bobby's face early in the morning when one's breath could still be seen, by the time they shot that scene with Rogues angle the temperature rose so that breath was no longer frosty. The result is Iceman's breath is frosty because "Iceman". When Sabertooth thrust Storms head against the glass of the ticket window it was accidentally forceful enough to REALLY crack the glass, another case of accidental awesome, with a side order "owww!!" You'll notice that you never see Cyclops' Feet. this is because when in scenes with "any" of his physically larger co-stars, they built up a platform for him approach, stand, and exit the scene. Can't have the Field Commander of the X-Men be notably short now. ;)

Darius.

Here's a one-off Superhero Movie, "Superman Returns" (2006). Directed by Bryan Singer, Written by Michael Dougherty (Screenplay/Story), Dan Harris (Screenplay/Story) & Bryan Singer (Story): Superman Returns is a Science Fiction Action Movie. Fun Fact: An excerpt from IMDb, "When Bryan Singer became interested in possibly hiring Brandon Routh, he arranged for them to meet in a coffee shop. When they met at their table, Routh stumbled and spilled hot coffee all over the table. Although he panicked, thinking he had just lost the part, Singer laughed and said it actually helped him get the part. The incident convinced Singer that Routh could pull off the clumsy, bumbling Clark Kent."

Kade (Sydney, AU)

Not really one-off: the studio wanted a continuation of the Richard Donner Superman franchise with new actors. So do we insist Natalie watch Superman I and II first? Probably can skip III and IV, as Donner had nothing to do with those ones.

More than 200 replies here... But, Magneto doesn't just control metal, he has full magnetism powers, including flight and force fields. Wolverine went because Cyc was a backup plan. So weird seeing the twin towers. Magneto was always written as a Jewish Concentration camp survivor. Rogue always had the white streak in her hair. In the Comics she stole Carol Danver's (Captain Marvel) powers. This was back when she was Ms. Marvel. So in the comics Rogue can fly, and has super strength and durability. If you watch the X-Men cartoon (Which you should, people would go nuts for it) she just has all the powers from the start. I'm sure none of this is new, as I write this you just uploaded your Logan watch. I haven't seen New Mutants but that's an X-Men movie too. Stan Lee had a cameo at the hotdog stand when Senator Kelly came out on the beach, but he didn't get any focus or speaking lines. A lot of the mutants in the school were actual mutants from the books, but some will be recast. I think the movie is cheesy as hell, but it set some good foundations. There probably wouldn't be an MCU without this. It's hard to believe this movie came out 8 years before Iron Man, but it really feels like just, a whole other previous generation. Before X-Men the biggest Marvel movies that I can think of were the Blade movies, particularly Blade 2. That one was a big deal in it's time. Let's roll into X2!
