My all-time favourite movie!! So excited to rewatch this with you Nattie

Darryl Low

Happy Feature Film Friday Nat. This is a movie I have never watched, so it's one to enjoy watching along with you 💛 Frank Darabont also developed your favourite zombie show for tv, The Walking Dead.

JediLounger

When you said you love bromances in yesterday’s GoT ep, my first thought was of this film. This should be fun.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiinally

Ian

Also my all time favorite movie it's just such a beautiful film I never get tired of watching it and I've seen it a lot 😀 prepare for a lot of comments saying you gotta watch green Mile now they kinda go hand in hand, so another week of wonderful reactions ending on a high thankyou as always Nat have a lovely weekend, get better and stay golden 💛

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 This is such a great movie! Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are phenomenal in this film. I'm downloading this right now to watch later tonight. Looking forward to watching this reaction this evening. And looking forward to your Tom Hanks themed poll tomorrow. Have a great day today! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛

Patrick Armbruster

I truly hope the Tom Hanks poll will be "Do we want more Tom Hanks movies? Yes | No". ;) (For me, Tom Hanks' career can basically be summarised as "What do we pity Tom Hanks in this one for?" – with maybe one or two exceptions.)

JediLounger

So the film takes place from early 1947 to 1966. Just so you are aware. Then a little bit in 1967.

Darryl Low

Woah Nelly! That's a bit harsh. I think you are selling Tom Hanks short. The man's done some iconic movies, and created some memorable characters.

Ken

Yes, absolutely Stephen King and for us guys and anyone who believes this is possible, yes, absolutely this is a SCARY MOVIE!!!!!!!

Calo Grsf

Hi Nat, thank you for this amazing reaction, it was a great discovery! 😄 I still wonder how I missed this movie hahaha Your reaction was so touching, especially with Brooks... Why Brooks? You broke our hearts... 😭 A beautiful film with several interesting things to analyze, your teacher was a good teacher, personnally when you watch this kind of films, and talk about "serious" things like you did here at the end, is always interesting, it would be so nice to have some kind of discussion with topics like this but unfortunately difficult to do it haha I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Darryl Low

Thanks for a truly heart-warming and emotional video this Friday evening Nat. I enjoyed watching this movie with you so much. Beautifully written and acted by the whole cast. The score by Thomas Newman was incredible. You can always rely on the string section to get the emotions going. And fun fact, Thomas Newman's father was Alfred Newman, who wrote the Twentieth Century Fox fanfare, that all Star Wars fans know and love so well 😊 Thanks for all your amazing work this week Nat. Have a relaxing weekend 💛

JayF

Natalie, if you're going to do a poll of Tom Hanks movies please include Apollo 13 and Castaway if you haven't seen them. I highly recommend both. Thank you for reacting to Shawshank. It's one of my two favorite films.

Great movie, Great reaction! Ugh, this is the first time I noticed that that last time the warden talked to Andy, when he told him to shine his shoes and that it was great having him back, the warden is whistling a hymn as he walks off, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. Nice little touch. This was based off a short story by Stephen King, same for The Green Mile. I think these 2 movies are by far the best Stephen King book adaptations.

Bruce Bromley

Darabont certainly had a way with putting King stories up on the screen, Nat, have you seen his other two King adaptions, The Green Mile and The Mist?

It Hurt A Lot

If you judge a film by how much you hate the villain this one may take the cake. Norton has to be one of the best bad guys of all time

Rime Pendragon

I love you Natalie, but the time frame of the movie has been established numerous times.. Red mentions it a couple of times :-)

Chaz Mannington

The movie is based on a novella contained in the book Different Seasons. Incredible story on par with the the movie. Also read The Body (renamed Stand By Me for the movie). Apt Pupil and The Breathing Method were kinda meh, but that is of course my opinion.

Scott Greene

A little history: "Shawshank" was nominated for the "Best Picture" Oscar, but it wasn't the favorite to win because it hadn't made much money. "Forrest Gump" and "Pulp Fiction" sold WAY more tickets. If the awards for that year were voted on now, "Shawshank" would have a damn good chance of winning, I think!

Andrew T

I'm hoping some of the film aficionados will provide some trivia about the movie, like why Red says he's Irish.

Joe Blankenship

The book is a collection of 4 short stories, called Different Seasons. 3 of which have been adapted into movies. This, Stand by Me and Apt Pupil.

Michael Labs

Not really about the movie but about a comment on the Blue of the Pacific... Made me remember looking out of an airplane window at Lake Michigan on a clear day, flying in the evening west over it. Both the sky and the water were blue and it brought to mind God dividing the waters... above and below. It was a beauty of a sight and to date; the most peaceful I have ever been.

Speaking of both Tom Hanks and bromances, Please consider Band of Brothers! Produced by Mr. Hanks and wall to wall bromance very much in the Saving Private Ryan tradition. It’s a mini series so maybe after GOT?

Brian Jones

Great reaction as always, and a masterpiece of a film. Speaking of Frank Darabont, I would highly recommend adding The Mist to your list of movies for Natmares this year. It's another adaptation of a Stephen King short story, like Shawshank, and of course The Green Mile is a great flick as well.

MertzRocks

Yes, excellent HBO miniseries with great acting! (and remember also I suggested Chernobyl, which is much shorter)

Ben Wheeler

Clancy Brown (Captain Hadley) is my favorite Lex Luthor.

Alex B

One of my all time favorites if not my favorite movie ever, it’s so perfect. Used to fall asleep to Morgan Freeman’s narration in college almost every night

Ortizmo2000

If you wind up doing Green Mile, have the kleenex boxes stacked. Not kidding. Saw it one time only 20 years ago. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but I really don't have a need to cry that hard again.

Thomas Yanez

I can't think of any Clancy Brown role that I didn't enjoy him in... I even liked him in "Earth 2"

Vonlinchen

The music, emotion & beauty of this film reminds me so much of Road to Perdition, also a cinematic masterpiece. Another amazing film you should definitely watch Nat! Perhaps on the Tom Hanks list?

MertzRocks

Just a joke... Red's name is Ellis Boyd Redding and he just made a little joke when Andy asked.

Matthew Periolat

Dear Natalie, I started this journey of movie watching with you through dumb luck. A recommended video on YouTube who happened to be watching one of my favorites. Why not watch, see what the girl thinks. If I knew then what I know now, that she’d watch four of my top ten, this being the fourth, I wouldn’t have believed you. I also wouldn’t have thought that it would get me through a pandemic, through nights of loneliness after hard days of work, through the tough as well as the easy, wouldn’t have believed that either. Or, by the weirdest quirk of this cosmic universe, I’d end up making a friend. I know this is your road, your journey, your story that we are learning as you write it, sharing the good of the smiles and laughter, Tyler and Koda, along with the challenges, moments where stress, illness or painful tears that make up the bad. But I do reflect with movies like this that maybe, through a distorted glass or sideways prisim, you are seeing my story, joys and tears, cheers and tears, fun and frustrations too. I rather like to think so. Friends always know without saying a word. Probably ridiculously dramatic, but it’s honestly how I feel after sharing Shawshank with you, along with all the others along the way. Glad you have found so much of what I found - the message of hope and healing, of the beauty to be found in the darkness, of just sheer will to make it, not just for one’s self, but for people who matter. The world is good, just need the right people, the right look to see it. I thank you, as always, for the gift of your eyes to see, your heart to feel, your tears to empathize, your laughter to smile. Your story is a good one and I know more movies, more chapters, more everything is yet to come. Just glad to be along in the background, but always grateful for a chapter in my story to pass under your eyes too. And to share the moments and joy. And hope. Until next time, still… always… Golden.

Ortizmo2000

"Why do they call you Red?" "Maybe it's because I'm Irish" Your reaction to that line was classic AF. It was also taken directly from the novella, in which Red was not identified as black. Darabont decided to use the line anyway. :)

Jomero

Not only is The Mist a Stephen King adaption, but it's one he himself adores and highly recommends (and he doesn't love all of his adaptions... The Shining especially). In fact, the writer for the movie adaption changed the ending a little bit from the books. And it sort of made King mad, because he realized it was even better than the one he wrote!

Jomero

This film may have been swallowed by the goliath that was Forrest Gump during its initial release, but I feel like it has endured far longer and better (and I like both movies).

REDR58

Tom Hanks movies? Definitely watch “The ‘Burbs” before anything else.

Frankie H

This is one of the few movies that is very true to the book. It's a very short book too, you can finish it in a few hours really. Technically it's a novella, it's not long enough to be considered a novel.

Christian Rennie

One of the best stories and movies ever made. I remember days on the bus to SF when the bus would stop to pick up prisoners from San Quentin. I started a conversation with a man on one of those rides coming back to the city from visiting my Mon. A man who had just been released with his envelope filled with his release money. He, still wearing his prison clothing: Grey sweats and white shoes he probably made himself. We talked about SF and how he had hope to meet his girl in Oakland. We got out and I offered to share a cab where he need to go. We went and I dropped him off and took the cab the rest of the way back to my room in a house in the outer sunset area. This movie always reminds of him. Also, too, we are still human beings, even in prison. Even at work. And, even, here, sharing our thoughts. Thanks Natalie. A great pick! Sad smiles of joy all round.

roundone9

Absolutely wonderful movie, one of the all time greats!

Great reaction, Nat. Did this movie as a book report back in high school and have loved it ever since. I would suggest The Green Mile next. One of Tom Hanks finest, second only to Forest Gump. They will both hit you in the feels, but worth the watch

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I really loved this reaction and Natalie's post watch talk about hope, and bringing it around to the Holocaust, that's a brutal truth we need to keep alive and aloud and close to our memory because the sooner it's forgotten the sooner it happens again. Hope and resistance. Hope, resistance and the patience of rocks, what made Andy the rebel in this story, and what made this story so special. My list of top favorite movies is always changing but Shawshank is always in my top 10. I think it's funny that so many of my top all times seem to share the theme of incarceration, like Shawshank, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Papillon (original), and Cool Hand Luke (Schindler's List should be included in this list but it's so gut wrenchingly true, while all the rest apart from Papillon are completely fictional). All of these films have a main character who's in some way a stubborn rebel or nonconformist; I suppose a lot of people can relate to that, or want to.

Robb Hollen

This movie was filmed at the old state penitentiary in Mansfield, Ohio. You can take tours through it now. Took my family through it some years ago and it's pretty creepy as they had to put it back how they found it once they finished filming. Only parts of it appear in the movie. The actual cell blocks face outward, not inward towards each other like in the film. The warden's office and the boarding room house ("Brooks was here, so was Red") sets are also there. Well worth a visit.

Cripkie

ravens are crazy smart for birds. Jake would know his dad is going and he needs to find his own way. Birds aren't the most caring species but their pragmatism comes in handy for survival.

Andrew Clifton

Great reaction Nat. I already owned this one so I didn't even have to look for it. One of my favorite movies ever. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are both amazing actors. Great supporting cast too. I hope you get to do Green Mile soon but idk, I'll have to see what other Tom Hanks films are on the list lol. I also love what you said about the score. Music is one of the most underrated parts of film making. I watched a video a while back where is showed parts of movies with and without the music and difference is just insane. That is one thing I love about GOT too. The soundtracks are amazing. You haven't even got to the best ones yet. Well have a good weekend.

Martin Firth

Great read! Just a heads up, writing really personal messages to someone who barely knows you exist can feel really creepy for the recipient. I'm not telling you to change anything, just something worth keeping in the forefront of your mind.

Martin Firth

Many movies have a happy ending as part of their structure; I think this movie is one of the few that actually earns them. So much despair in this movie. So little hope. But hope wins.

ahhh im still waiting for Kung fu Panda 2. Cant wait!!!

The Truman Show

Tranquil_Gnome

A perfect movie in my eyes. The people, the tone, the sets, the music. So good.

Baron

Thank you for this amazing reaction video, It is really great, and I thought all of your comments and thoughts were spot on. Stephen King has a funny story that he likes to share about a woman in a store who walked up to him and said something along the lines of "your books are all to scary, you should write something like "The Shawshank redemption"" and he of course replied I actually wrote the book that movie was based on to which she replied "no you didn't" and walked away. So I guess people have trouble believing that King can write books that aren't super natural. King has a lot of amazing books, one of my favorites was "Bag Of Bones" which was read by King himself, and had an ok movie with Pierce Brosnan but no where near the top of the list for best King movies. I highly recommend that you consider adding The Hulu Series "Castle Rock" to your list it is set in the Stephen King Universe the first season has a lot to do with the Shawshank Prison and the second season is a prequel for Anne Wilkes who is the woman in Misery. The problem with adapting Kings works into movies is that they never have enough time to tell the story, this was a novella so it worked a bit better, but the trend for making good adaptions seems to be making mini limited series now. Lisey's Story is on Apple Tv Plus and is a pretty good series, same with the new Stand which isn't perfect but still better then the campy series from the 90s. I could go on and on so I will stop here for now. Once again Thank you for the amazing reaction really enjoyed it.

Nicholas Sulikowski

"38 bullets" Caliber, not bullets. It was 38 caliber. Also much later on, there was that low moment for Andy, and a thunderstorm was going on, and you pointed out how perfect it would be for there to be a storm during a low point of his story. Funny thing is, I was watching this react video DURING a thunderstorm, with actual thunderclaps when you said that. So I was gut-busting. Nevermind the fourth wall. I think you broke some kind of fifth wall. lol Also, this was a wonderful video. I was with you with every emotional moment. The funny thing is, I've seen this movie a couple times....in fragments. I've known the plot, and on TV I've always caught bits of the beginning, middle, and end. Enough to know that it's an amazing movie. But always out of order. This was actually the first time I've sat down to watch it all in the correct sequence. So that was certainly fun to revisit with you.

Watching this movie for the first time in awhile and it still holds up and is still my favorite movie of all time.

Anonymous

Shawshank Redemption is my second favorite movie of all-time, just behind Casablanca. The line “salvation lies within” as the warden hands him the Bible back which has the rock hammer in it that Andy uses to escape is just storytelling perfection.

Alan Kobb

Natalie, I've seen this before, but like you, a long time ago. I probably would have gone a long time without watching it if you hadn't done so. It was a complete joy to watch this along with you. Your reactions mirrored my own, and I think I gained a new appreciation for this movie seeing it from your perspective. I think we sometimes forget what it is like watching something with others. I went to my first movie (Black Widow) in a while this weekend and experienced once again how we can get absorbed in a movie when we're in a darkened theater. No doubt that's a special way to enjoy a movie, but equally special in a different way is to watch it with someone else, to see it through their eyes and to hear what they have to say about it. I'm lucky to be able to watch a truly exceptional movie with an exceptional film professional who is also an exceptional watching companion (even if virtual...)

john collins

Man this film takes my breath away every time I see it. I haven't seen it in years either and it was so much fun re-watching it with you! Love ya Nat, thanks for providing such great content for us!

Anonymous

You should watch the The Majestic its also directed by Frank Darabont. And its one of Jim Carreys few serious dramatic period roles. Severely underrated movie.

Anonymous

Awww Natalie that was an insightful and beautiful speech at the end of your closing comments. I'm glad we all enjoy this movie. It's one of the movies we can always watch at any time and still enjoy it.

Anonymous

for sure the majestic!

Ilsuk Yang

This is one of my favorite (perhaps my very favorite) movies! Great reaction, Nat!

Daniel Goldberg

I absolutely love your reaction videos! It’s like seeing the movie for the first time again. A couple of things that I missed every time I watched this movie that someone else pointed out are that when the library is expanded they name it after Brooks (I don’t know how I missed that one) and that when they are sorting the books Andy is wearing Brooks’ cardigan. There so many wonderful little touches like those in the movie. The director was definitely at the top of his game.

Raven Dark

Once again, I'm leaving comments long after the reaction is posted, so hopefully you remember what you saw enough for my comments to make sense. Just near the start now, but I thought I would say this now so I don't forget. I'll add other comments separately, as often editing or adding to an already posted one causes Patreon to eat said comments. Near the start, you mentioned how it seemed like convenient storytelling that all the prisoners were outside to see the new inmates, along with Andy, come in. To my knowledge, that's actually how they used to do it in real prisons. I don't know if they do it that way anymore. Possibly not, as people are far more aware of prisoner safety and wellbeing now than they were back then. Prisoners are treated much more humanly now. Back then, they would have brought them in in front of everyone as a way to humiliate and break prisoners down. I believe it's called a perp walk. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Raven Dark

It surprises me that you forgot most of Andy's story in this movie, but I'm glad you did. If you had remembered, most of the movie wouldn't have been a surprise, which would have meant it wouldn't be nearly as much fun to watch. It's also funny that you were surprised we get to see Andy and Red unite at the end. Because I remember reading somewhere, perhaps in a comment on another reaction, that Frank Darabont wanted to end the movie with Red riding on the bus, saying those things about hope. Someone told him he couldn't end it like that, that people needed to see the reunion, and that's why we got to see it. Another wonderful and moving reaction, Nat. It brought me so much joy, watching this beautiful movie with you.
