Hey guys!

To kick off the weekend, here is my reaction to the movie, Leon: The Professional. I watched this version on Amazon so unfortunately the little Starz logo factors into the timer here. I am not watching the extended cut for those who are curious.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments below. As always, thanks so much for your support here on Patreon and until the next one, ✨stay golden!✨

One of my faves!! 👍👍👍👍

Danishprince

Never seen this movie before so I'm excited to watch it with you Nattie!

JediLounger

I wish you would have watched the extended cut. I find the extra scenes lots of fun.

Justin Credible

I'll never understand why people like this movie. It's pedophile apologist trash. Natalie Portman's parents said "no" to multiple scenes because they were so insane. This whole movie is about how the director (who impregnated a 14-year-old when he was in his 30s) finds little girls sexy. The scene where she's singing to him is one of the creepiest things in the history of cinema. This whole movie is disgusting.

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 Downloading this right now to watch later tonight. This will be a re-watch for me. It's been awhile since I've seen it. I mainly just remember the main cast. And only remember bits and pieces of the movie. Looking forward to watching this movie reaction with you this evening. Have a great day today! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛

Jon B

Awesome movie. Remember this was back when action movies had Arnold, Dolph Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone in them. It was wild to see a stone cold assassin like Leon who didn't fit the mold of action heroes.

Lorenzo Turner

No extended cut, bummer...

Luis Torrefranca

"Doesn't dress like how I'd imagine an assassin would dress..." In my medieval reenactment days (SCA) someone once told me a Japanese themed group had a ninja/spy. He dressed like a 14th century French merchant.

Anonymous

Jean Reno, who plays Léon, says that he wanted to portray him as if he were a little “mentally slow” and like repressed. He wanted to show that his character wouldn’t take advantage of this girl and that their relationship would never ever go in a weird way. That will be extremely difficult for most audiences to pick up, but I love this movie so much. Definitely one of my favorites of all time

Travis Starnes

Like you said, there were apparently worse scenes in the original script that thankfully got cut. There was a whole relationship subplot that you can still see hinted at in the script that was really disturbing.

Darryl Low

Not watched this movie in a good, long while so am excited to watch along with you today Nat. Eric Serra does the scores for a lot of Luc Besson's movies. He wrote the music for Leon and The Fifth Element, and if you should watch Goldeneye, the music will sound similar to you too 😉 Certainly an interesting movie, with some questionable moments but overall very stylish and well made. And I loved you looking out for that plant the whole way through. Thanks for another week of amazing work Nattie G. Have a great weekend 💛

Rime Pendragon

That's such a bullshit argument. "You are too dumb to understand this relationship between a 46 year old man and a 12 year old girl. "

Ian

Movie Friday before the footie what's not to love 🙂 nats got tissues so we are all good to go 😀 thankyou for another wonderful week of reactions Nat have a cracking weekend and until next week as always stay golden 💛

Luis Torrefranca

Re: "Did she not have to go to work..." It's the next day.

Sadly it's almost impossible to find the American theatrical cut in Europe, pretty much only the Director's Cut/International Version/Extended Version is all that's available, so I'll have to skip this one. It's a great movie, enjoy!

Luis Torrefranca

"Check it. Make sure it's the right thing." "I trust you" "One thing's got nothin' to do with the other." I like that line. Didn't go back in time. Leon went to Tony to borrow the simunitions rifle to train Mathlida.

Calo Grsf

Thanks Nat, I really loved your reaction, because I had exactly the same reaction to the relationship of the characters and it is still the case 😁😆 But otherwise the movie, the actors (Gary Oldman I love you 😆), the music, sound design and the style of the movie is very well executed. I'm glad you tried the adventure, and you liked it, despite the disturbing side haha And I don't know why, you made me laugh out loud with the plant and the explosion scene was awesome with you 😆 I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Is anyone else having trouble finding the non directors cut? I’m in the UK and all my options are the same extended cut

Dan Careaga

I saw this opening week, in theaters, in my early 20's and when it was over I thought "what an objectively great film! too bad it was crafted with the most disturbing, sexualized, view of young girls I have yet seen." I have not seen it since, not even the directors cut. I still can't bring myself to watch it. So as much as I look forward to Friday movie nights with Nat I have to skip this one. No harm, no foul. See you Monday! P.S. Oldmans delivery of "Everyone" is still one of my favorite, over the top, acting moments in film. it is nearly Nic Cage level.

Anonymous

A film made by a child abuser about an abusive relationship... Fun.

Simon Bauer

the extended version is wayyyy more creepy haha

It Hurt A Lot

Isn't it obvious that only she viewed him romantically but he loved her in a paternal way?

Luis Torrefranca

Ending with Stansfield: There's an extra scene during Mathilda's training montage referring to what Leon calls "the ring trick."

Patrick Armbruster

Yeah, I really don't get how one could look at Léon and see him in that way. Granted: Luc Besson's own second marriage to a girl he met when she was not of legal age in France gives enough of a slant towards how Mathilda was put to scene in the movie, but Léon wasn't shown to have a romantic or sexual vibe towards her. Quite the opposite really. He's just looking out for her.

K.N.

I'm not sure why everyone voted for you to react to this film either. I like the movie, but I pretty much knew you would have that exact reaction to their relationship.

Anonymous

The extended edition would have filled in some of the gaps and shown Mathilda's training but would also have made you way more uncomfortable.

JayyDTR

There's so much excellent filmmaking and acting in this movie, but just don't look into the deleted scenes and scripts... it's disgusting. Even the scenes they keep in are just weird and uncomfortable.

Graht1

"I hate this song." Yeah, Bjork is an acquired taste :)

Anonymous

I don't know about VUDU access in the UK but that's where I picked it up.

Vonlinchen

I always looked at it from the view that Leon was, in many ways, a child himself and that Matilda had never experienced any form of love in her life. Then she suffered a horrifically traumatic experience which bonded her emotionally to Leon, and mistaking it for romantic love she acted on those feelings in a way she'd viewed others do. Just the way I viewed it, but hey, that's film, you can interpret it the way you want.

Baron

Thank you for this great reaction Nat, All of your thoughts and comments were spot on and you had a couple of really awesome moments of synchronicity with the material. After watching this with you I am so curious what you would think of the movie "KickAss" another example of young people in Hollywood doing and saying some really questionable stuff. Also did anyone else think the creepy relationship was meant to distract from the fact that he is training a child to be an assassin?

Luis Torrefranca

There's a bit of backstory to how Leon came to New York that's hinted at with the talks he has with Tony. When he was younger in Italy, he did have love in his life (significant other), something horribly tragic happens, and he flees to the United States. Tony takes him in and cares for him. I think that similarity with Mathilda's story is familiar to Leon and a factor in why he takes care of her. Mathilda's brother being that source of love in her life.

Anonymous

I hope the departed comes back on a future poll. I think you would like it

Travis

Lmao called it. This is a movie lost in time. It’s great in a lot of ways but the sexual undertones with the young girl were always too much for me to enjoy it and in 2020 this would never get made. I hope you watch the departed. You’ll like it so much more.

Anonymous

Another great reaction. Its interesting to see the difference in availability between Amazon US & UK. Only the extended version seems to be available in the UK (where its just called LEON). No biggie watching the extended version with your reaction, just had to pause you a few times. However, glad you didn't have the same one I did. If you were troubled about when he slept in the bed, the build up to that would've disgusted you. This would be a good movie if the dodgy narrative was completely removed.

john collins

what the fuck was this movie

David Olden

This was my first time watching, too. And for the same reason as you, I won’t be revisiting it either, even if it is a well crafted film.

David Olden

In fact, I’m going to cleanse my pallet, and watch Luca on Disney+. Instead Italian hit men, it’s Italian MERMEN! :-D

JayF

I agree with other comments that I've always viewed Leon's role in the relationship to be paternal. The only time he says anything even remotely questionable is when he is trying to convince her to go down the vent to safety. Matilda, on the other hand, is a 12 year-old girl who just lost her entire family and the guy that took her in was intent on kicking her out on her own the very next day. So maybe she tried to turn it into something else for that reason or maybe it was a hero worship thing. I agree that her actions are weird and made the relationship creepy. I just think there were reasons given for her acting that way.

Luis Torrefranca

Agree on Leon trying to convince Mathilda to leave. To me, everything he is saying to her revolves around "I want to have a full life and be a family and this gives me motivation to get out of here, so don't worry about me." Not "I want to have a romantic relationship with you". This is all knowing the chances of getting out alive are incredibly slim. He finds a way for her to escape knowing he can't go. Compare that to the beginning of the movie where Mathilda's father doesn't even try to send his family away knowing the agents are returning at noon and will likely kill them all. He stands in a corner doing nothing while listening to his family get killed.

Michael Cruse

This is the thatrical cut of the film, which was edited to minimize the skeeviness of the Leon/Matilda relationship after test audiences went "Oh HELL no". The longer cut, when I saw it years later, is just icky as fuck. That said, Natalie Portman's performance impressed the hell out of me when I saw this in the theater, and still does. That scene where she's outside Leon's apartment, desperately whispering "Please open the door" breaks my heart every time. Had no doubt she was going to be a star.

Ken

Natalie, consider Heat if you'd like another crime thriller, but without the creepy undertones. It's one of the all time greats. And was Natalie Portman's next movie after this, though in a much smaller role.

Uncle Phoenix

OMG. That's the first time I've watched the whole movie since it first came out. Normally I just watch the beginning and the end. That was so uncomfortable to have to watch the middle part of that movie.

Ben Wheeler

Gary-Oldman-as-villain-a-thon! Dracula, Book of Eli, Air Force One...

Flukemarm

Well I'm glad the comments are so revealing to me that I will not enjoy this reaction, oh well. It's worth noting that Gary Oldman plays the villain in Kung Fu Panda 2!

Thomas Yanez

If anybody is interested, the movie "Colombiana" is a no-creepy-stuff spiritual sequel. Besson had a script for a sequel with a grown up Mathilda, but Hollywood bullshit prevented it from being made, so he revised the script into "Colombiana", the story of a girl who grows up to be an assassin seeking revenge against those who killed her family.

Thomas Yanez

Whoa, "Book of Eli"? I missed that one. I know it exists, but didn't know it had an Oldman villain in it. Thanks for the tip.

Anonymous

There are some uncomfortable parts of the movie, of course; but I think part of the charm of the film is how complicated it is... Matilda was living in a very bad situation (abuse, neglect etc) from the beginning. THEN her entire family was gunned down. She is VERY clearly traumatized... Although he is an assassin, Leon's child like persona, and mentality helped her through that trauma (even if only a little bit). I see it as a paternal love, and a traumatized little girl who is in very clear need of help... I didn't know any of that stuff about Luc Besson; that bit is awful. But I think people read this movie incorrectly, and completely forget how traumatic ANY aspect of this movie would be for an already abused 12 year old girl. ALL that to say; Love the reactions Nat!

Matthew Periolat

Yeah, this has not aged well. And the cut 20 minutes don’t help much. This is why people talked about Portman for the Lolita remake, which she turned down. The one positive I’ll say is I’ll go to my grave saying she very easily could have gotten at least a Supporting Actress nomination from the Academy, but they were staying away from honoring kids after Anna Paquin’s win for The Piano. Conceivably, you could have had three Oscar wins in a row for Supporting Actress, all three under 12 between Paquin, Kirsten Dunst for Interview With The Vampire and Portman here. But, yeah, totally get the skeve. Hell, I loved this movie 20 years ago in my teens. Look back now with you, I’m wondering what the hell was I thinking? Reno, Oldman and Portman are all great, but the skeve… thanks for the revisit and reminder. Now, let’s move on and not speak of it again. Still Golden.

Joey Joseph Jojoson

well, this movie didn't age well. Not that it was great to begin with...It just gets worse and worse with time.

f hf

This movie beat out The Departed, Godfather and Parasite in the poll? Haha wtf

Anonymous

I always viewed the uncomfortable scenes between Leon and mathilda as her acting out. He never reciprocates her romantic feelings and is also extremely uncomfortable at the whole idea. When she tells the hotel owner that they’re not father and daughter, that they’re lovers, it’s right after she tells Leon she loves him and he doesn’t reciprocate. I always saw this as her acting out as a way to get back at him, I never got the impression it was true. Also makes a lot of sense when you think back to her original home life, how messed up her family was, being exposed to drugs and sex on the regular. It’s amazing she isn’t more crazy in the head.

Anonymous

I saw this around the age of Portman's character and thought it was super cool. My mother seemed a little alarmed to hear I enjoyed it, I don't think she realized what she rented before we watched it. Three things drew me in: Leon's off-beat quietness reminded me of myself, Mathilda's misguided attempts to have agency over her circumstances at that age seemed like free-spirit rebellion, and the tension from the editing/sound design. I thought Mom was just put off by the child-assassin plot point I didn't pick up on the sexual tension crap until I was an adult Natalie's reactions to certain scenes made me realize there was more of it than I remembered. So I've come away from this feeling much more lukewarm about the movie, but I'm okay with that.

Anonymous

As others have said, this is the theatrical version where half of their "relationship" was cut out. Luckily you watched this version as the other is much harder to overlook.

DeadStillEating

Oh man, I don't know... I'm pretty sure this movie was garbage. I'm a little baffled by the high audience scores. Best I can figure is that people try so hard to look past the pedifilia (not sure why that gets a pass but OK), that they also overlook the flat, cartoonish, ridiculousness that is the rest of the movie. Ironic that whoever greenlight this trainwreck was most likely blinded by the same thing. Gotta say, I think you may have steered us wrong here Nat. But don't fret, even the mighty Casey struck out a time or two. Next time you're looking for a little 90s blood lust with some interesting camera work, I'd suggest National Born Killers. It has the lower critic's score for sure, but the daughter diddler in that one gets killed so... I guess points off for that.

Daniel Vezina

Omg, you miss so much,, I don't know what version you got, but you miss so much, th version I have is 2h12min

Kevin Townsend

This movie is ok, but there are better low budget films you could watch. Billy Bob Thornton's Sling Blade from 1996 is a much better film.

Anonymous

Never seen this before and decided to check it out with you. Honestly, if you weren't doing a reaction vid, I wouldn't have finished it. I had the same cringy feelings you did about the relationship between Leon and Mathilda and won't be picking it up again because of it. Going through these other comments, I'm so glad I decided not to watch the extended edition. Portman was so good in this! Some of her scenes had me really feeling for her character. It's just sad that her debut film had her being so sexualized while she was still so young. I did enjoy the paternal moments they had, though, and wish that had been the vibe the whole movie. I also really enjoyed the sound work during it. It was excellent at creating tension and suspense. Overall, I don't regret watching it, but I won't be doing so again.

Matt Gwinn

I don't think people like this film because of their relationship. People like it because of the great performances and because Leon is a total badass. The only part of the European cut that's worthwhile is the scene when they do a hit together. The rest is just more uncomfortable relationship stuff that doesn't help the film.

Dan Careaga

If you are looking for "Great Gary Oldman" performances and haven't yet seen "True Romance" then you need to meet Drexel Spivy, one of Oldman's finest performances. It is a very small part but it is absolutely Brilliant.

Anonymous

I did not see the relationship between Leon and Matilda that way. Leon was basically a simple man; maybe with Asperger's or something. He did not know how to have a relationship with anyone, let alone a little girl. He didn't even get that the italian guy was conning him and using him. Matilda on the other hand wanted something, but she didn't know what. She had a crappy family and she knew it. You could see in the scene with the cigarette that she's trying to get Leon's attention; and you can see also from that interaction that he saw her as just a kid. As the story progressed, she makes advances that shock him, but he has no interest in. I feel they actually did a very good job at reminding us that she is just a mixed up little girl, and that his feelings for her were as that of a mentor and a caregiver.

Logan Kerlee

I'm right there with you on this! I feel the same as you with pretty much everything and I can't really put it any better than you did. Thank you for taking the time to write that out! You rock, buddy. :)

Logan Kerlee

Yeah, agreed. I was watching the extended cut while she watched the original cut. It didn't really add much of anything that was vital or super interesting. A few deeper insights on a couple characters/scenes but like you said, a whole lot more of the scenes that would creep Natalie out. I loved this movie as a kid. I still do, but as an adult I've come to see how some may feel how Leon behaved throughout with Mathilda was inappropriate. I just didn't notice all of that as a kid when I first watched this. I probably watched this for the first time when I was 8 or so. Waaaaaaaaayyy too young! xD

Travis

Goina have to get your pedophile rocks off somewhere else

Logan Kerlee

100% respect your views on the movie. I enjoyed it but a good bit of that is because I watched it as a kid and loved it then. That and I look at Leon's behavior not in the same way as you. I'm not going to try and argue my feelings on it. There's no point. You didn't enjoy the movie and I did. Just how it goes sometimes. :)

Logan Kerlee

Yup, agreed. I watched the extended version alongside Nat in this and just paused the reaction when an extended/added scene came on.

Logan Kerlee

Big same on the awkward feels after rewatching this as an adult. I enjoyed the movie as a kid. Wasn't a top movie for me by any means - I just thought that Leon was a bad ass that killed a ton of bad guys in a few very violent scenes and I really dug the sound design as a kid as well. After finishing the movie now, as an adult my feelings are mixed for sure. I enjoyed the movie for the same reasons that I did at that young age but with everything else as well.. yikes. To top it off, I watched the extended edition instead of the theatrical edition. Biiiig mistake.

Logan Kerlee

Be thankful that you didn't watch the extended version like I did. Couldn't find the theatrical streaming anyplace for free.

Luis Torrefranca

For as heated a discussion that this movie has generated, I wonder what people’s thoughts are on the recent Game of Thrones reaction regarding Tommen and Margaery’s wedding. Or Game of Thrones in general, for that matter.

Anonymous

Little Continuity error, The girls home was supposed to be in Wildwood NJ as said on the phone in the beginning of the movie, but at the end, it sits across the river from NYC. also I really think the Academy and Golden Globes dropped the ball on not nominating Natalie and Gary for their acting in this film.

Richard Ryan

Personally, I liked Scary Oldman the best. "EVERYBODY!!"

Anonymous

Boy if you thought some of the scenes in this version made you uncomfortable, you would have really not liked the director's cut 😂

Anonymous

Right? There I was saying, "Oh yay, Bjork!" Followed immediately by Nat saying she doesn't like that song. Bjork's style is natively sensual though, and that song is sexual, so it definitely serves as an undertone to Mathilda's mood.

Anonymous

This really matches my take as well. It's not supposed to be comfortable or normalizing a sexual relationship; it's supposed to show a kid trauma-bonding inappropriately with an adult, who is obviously and completely uncomfortable with it. He never returns affections, but does take her on as his charge. I'm pretty sure in the extended edition Leon appears to move out for a period of time as a result of this discomfort. Portman has since spoken positively of the film, and she is not one to pull punches when something is amiss.

Garrick Smalley

Original release The Professional 2nd release Leon 3rd Leon: The Professional different countries / edits

Joe Blankenship

I don't think I've ever seen this start to finish. Always caught bits and pieces on TV. I thought it was pretty good. Leon is obviously not a pedophile. He felt sorry for Mathilda, and looking after her gave his life more purpose than watering a plant and drinking milk. Mathilda was a traumatized, confused little girl who had never had someone care for her like a father should, so it's no surprise that she didn't know how to process those feelings.

Joe Blankenship

By the way, this is on Brazilian Netflix if you've got a VPN. It's the theatrical cut so it synced up fine. 13 second difference on the timer.

Rain andMoonlight

I really kind of regret recommending this one to you. I couldn't finish it myself. I haven't seen it for years and when I was a young teenager I had a much more favorable opinion of it but now I just feel strange and gross. I know I wasn't the only person to recommend this but I apologize for throwing my voice in there

Wizzle

I was watching the extended edition and the reason they're sleeping in the same bed is because Mathilda persuades Leon to sleep on the bed. He was always sleeping sitting on his chair and she probably thought it would feel more comfortable for him to lie on the bed. In the extended version Mathilda says she wants to have sex with Leon but he quickly declines the offer. In another scene where they're at a restaurant and sitting across from each other Mathilda walks around the table and asks if she can kiss him; again he turns her down. The director may be a pedophile for sexualizing Mathilda in so many scenes but Leon is definitely not in my opinion. At the end of the movie when they say goodbye to each other before she exits the apartment and they say "I love you" to each other Leon means it in a non-sexual and platonic way. Mathilda probably had a crush on him and really meant it but if you watch the extended version and as someone else mentioned in the thread her love for him is not reciprocated. I've read most comments in this thread and everyone is entitled to their views. Anyway, great reaction and I'm looking forward to the next video reaction. :)

Garrick Smalley

In my mind they get away Leon becomes her father Matilda finally understands what a father could be and the love she had begun to feel for the first time (except for her brother) only advances to daughter father level. They move to somewhere in Europe and he finishes teaching her to be a cleaner. And they live happily ever after.

Logan Kerlee

Love the way that you put it. I'm glad that I wasn't alone in my feelings considering the extended version.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

A lot of the comments already explain why I hoped this movie wouldn't win the poll 😆 I loved it when I was a kid but even then I was a little creeped out, I know it's just a crush, I always had crushes on adult women when I was a kid but yikes. And knowing what we know now about Luc Besson, well... Anyway, another action movie I liked with Jean Reno but much less known was Ronin with Robert De Niro, there's a scene where a car crashes though a park bench in Paris that I think I slept on once, I was in Paris watching the movie when I noticed that. And of course 90s + action + Bobby De Niro = Heat, the movie not the physical property, I see others mentioned it too, it's a master class in bad ass.

Nick of Time

The first time I watched this, the music immediately reminded me of the score for GoldenEye which I had seen a number of times.

Petteri Ahlberg

You just need to squint a bit harder, and turn the volume WAY UP! That should do the trick : ) - Or, just provide your own copy of the film and sync it with Nat's.

Cripkie

na i dont see the creepiness. I was a cute kid and I had to defend myself from more than a few predators. This isn't that! Young girls flirt inappropriately, its how they learn that shit. Its more of a play I think. Like a puppy pretending to bite or a cat pretending to kill.

Jomero

This will be the first patreon watch-a-long I am "Noping" out of. I know many people like this movie, but I am not one of them. As I've said previously, I always got a very creepy vibe from the movie and was never sure why. Then I saw that in the original draft of the movie, Leon and Mathilda did indeed have sex (and Mathilda was still 12 in the script). That part was removed, but nothing else really changed because of it. All the vibes I was getting made sense after that.

BNJ

First time watching this movie, really enjoyed it. I mean she was obviously falling in love with him which I think seems plausible given her age and the way she was brought up, but Leon obviously had very fatherly feelings towards her and never acted on her advances. When he tells her he loves her at the end I see it as a fatherly love, he never reciprocated her romantic feelings towards him.

christopher brown

Allan Rumberger

Nat just watches what wins the polls, and the poll choices come from us as well.

Allan Rumberger

There's a really disappointing number of people commenting here that the movie can't be bad because the character of Leon is not a pedophile. That's missing the point entirely. The director IS a pedophile, and he takes every opportunity to sexualize the girl. That's the issue. There's more to a movie than the story.

Peter Hudson

The romantic tension always weirded me out, and it's pretty hard to ignore; BUT

Peter Hudson

Stansfield is almost as good a bad guy as Ledger's Joker. Imcredible performance. So with this film I just stick to watching the Gary Oldman scenes on youtube

Would really enjoy seeing your reaction to Gattaca with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman.

Alexander Schulz

Watching from a directorial point but didn't watch the Director's Cut. ^^ Made me a bit sad that you watched one of my all time favs in it's dumbed down version. :/

Jason Dolan

Took me forever to find this. Nat, I recommend creating a category that's just MOVIES for everything that's not a series like Star Wars or LOTR. Love ya!

Jason Dolan

Also, regarding the tram to Roosevelt Island there's a great Sylvester Stallone Rutger Hauer Billy Dee Williams movie called NIGHT HAWKS where the climax takes place on that Tram. So when I moved to New York, that's one of the first things I did, go to Roosevelt Island.

Anakin Starkiller

I'd love to see a Leon vs John Wick movie 🙂🙂

I watched the extended version and yeah, it hits a little different, lmao.

Another great movie by Luc Besson is La Femme Nikita (1990), it's in French with English subtitles I think but it is excellent. It's one of Leon's " actor Jean Reno's " early movies, but he plays a similar character, as a hit man.
