ISeeTrees ofGreen

Wont get to watch till later but this is gonna be amazing

0lis

Finally! waited the whole week for this one! Really looking forward to it!

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 I'm downloading this right now to watch tonight. This will be a first time watch for me as well. I've seen a few scenes here and there whenever it's on tv. For the most part, it'll be a first time watch. I'm looking forward to watching this reaction this evening. Have a great day today! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛

Excellent! This movie has my favourite magic trick! :D

Ian

Movie Friday 🙂 the dark Knight so excited to see what Nat thinks of the joker 😉 this should be another beauty, I have only one more thing to say "why so serious" sry couldn't help myself 😂 thankyou for another fun filled week Nat have a great weekend and until the next one stay golden 💛

Jomero

Looking forward to this one! Heath's performance was just so scene-stealingly good. His appearance (at the party) even shocked Michael Caine into forgetting he had lines. And Nolan left that take in the movie. Also, if you're wondering why Katie Holmes didn't reprise Rachel... well... the movie was filmed during that whole period where she was married to Tom Cruise, just had their baby, and was pretty much forced into hiding by Scientology.

JediLounger

This should be wild. But I have to take my cat to the vet first. Will be lots of fun when I return!

The Hedge Knight

Now that you've been properly introduced to Mark Addy (King Robert Baratheon), Alan Tudyk (Wash), Paul Bettany (Jarvis/Vision) and Heath Ledger (The Joker) it's time to see them come together in A Knight's Tale.

Jeff Clark

Good shout! A really underappreciated movie that flies under the radar. It's very British in it's humour.

Anonymous

And. Here. We. Go.

Jenny Tolls

Gary Oldman is not Robin lmao

Anonymous

Wonder if this is going to hit a million views before Star Wars lol

Andy Crawley

Looking forward to seeing your reaction, I was really glad with how much you enjoyed Batman Begins, in my eyes Nolan has yet to make a bad movie. Seeing it in IMAX when it came out was an amazing experience, and next to Brokeback Mountain it was Heath Ledger’s most incredible performance, well deserved the Oscar, just such a shame what diving that deep into character study ultimately did to him. It’s also weird watching Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon in these films, with that ‘tache he looked so similar to my dad it’s honestly scary! You should definitely watch The Prestige as soon as possible, made between Batman Begins and this film. Think it might be my favourite Nolan film, and both Bale and Hugh Jackman are so so good in it!

Luis Torrefranca

"Where did you learn to count?!" Counting shots fired.

Sam Kimpton

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy also has a cameo in this film. It's well documented that he's a huge Batman fan.

Curaitis

If you have the time Nat, watch some BTS/Interviews/Documentions on YT about Heath´s preparations for the Role. Its stunning what he did, for example why he always licks his Lips.

Anonymous

Joker's monologue in the interrogation room will go down in cinema hall of Fame. (Spoilers) Interestingly, from a writing standpoint, if batman had made the choice to go to the other address instead of trying to save Rachel (and being a good 'batman' by saving Dent, instead of letting go of his greater good morality) he would have saved Rachel. Joker gave him the chance to have what he wanted, in a fucked up way.

Jomero

One thing I really like about this movie is that it shows that making "the stakes" bigger doesn't necessarily make the movie's villain more threatening or the climax more intense. There have been other comic book movies where an entire city, or even the entire planet, was in danger. But we feel more frightened for just two ferries full of a few hundred people. Realistic stakes create more tension and drama. And this movie swims in that.

Ilsuk Yang

The Joaquin Phoenix Joker is NOT the Joker! He gave a great performance in that movie, but that is NOT the Joker! In the comics, you never see the Joker's origins. That's the whole pont of the Joker. You don't know his origin because you're not supposed to! I'm glad you picked up on the fact that Heath Ledger's Joker kept giving a different story about how he got his scars. He's lied about how he got his scars so much that he probably doesn't even remember how he got them. The Joker is chaos and anarchy. This is why Heath Ledger is the quintessential (live-action) Joker. Brilliant, frightening, and chaotic as the Joker should be. The "Joker" movie wasn't really a Joker movie. If they had let that movie be its own thing and gave it a title that had nothing to do with the Joker, I would've enjoyed that movie more. Anyways, sorry for the rant! I enjoyed your reaction to my favorite superhero/comic book movie!

Vonlinchen

Absolutely certain the Joker gave the people on the boats, the detonator to their own ship.

Stephen Woods

HI Natalie, Just watched your How to train your dragon reaction, and if you want to react to more animated movies, have you considered watching any Studio Ghibli films? I would recommend you start with Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

Ian

Great reaction Nat this sure was a great movie I see you didn't spot David dastmalchian ( Kurt from antman) playing one of the jokers thugs maybe you will in the editing 😉 two down one to go can't wait for the dark Knight rises 🦇🙂

Calo Grsf

Thank you Nat for this great reaction 😄 ! Heath Ledger is fantastic in his interpretation of the Joker, it is my favorite version And the emotional roller coaster from you is always on top 😆 And why so serious? 🃏 haha I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden 💛

Mike Adams

One of my top favorite movies. Collider did an interview with one of the actors, and he talks about what it was like working with Heath. Fascinating hearing what he was like on set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDF01bt3ey0

Tay Schumaker

That's actually a myth. https://screenrant.com/dark-knight-heath-ledger-joker-hospital-explosion-explained/

everything I wanted to comment on, people are already brining up :) Loved watching this again with your reactions :) one of my fave joker scenes is the first video tape of him with the fake batman. That disturbing "LOOK-AT-ME!", the way he delivered that in contrast with how he was with the rest of that scene.. was psychologically scary and in a way really shows how unhinged the joker is.

SebastianTheCourtious

Two-Face/Harvey Dent is a batman villain like the joker. Got burned on half his face in the comics and it injured his brain and developed a dual identity disorder. One being Harvey Dent who stands for justice. The other is just evil who just wants to kill and du crimes with no sense of moral. The coin is his guide for everything that has a choise involved.

Lee Gannon

I guess you didn't notice that between films Rachel Dawes turned into Mysterio's sister.

Anonymous

About the Harvey Dent make-up - it wasn't make-up. It was all CGI.

BHillzebub

The main problem with reacting to Ghibli movies is they are very much copyright magnets. The only "good" way would be for them to be Patreon only.

Brian Jones

As many have said, Harvey Dent/Two-Face is part of the Batman rogues gallery of villains. The coin toss is his trademark. I always thought Nolan did a great job working the character in. In the comics he gets acid splashed on his face in the courtroom. The guy who pulled the gun on him early on was a misdirect for comics fans. The makeup was primarily done in post for Harvey. You had asked about how Gambol had died, or had misinterpreted his falling over as passing out. The Joker did slice him, they just had to keep it PG-13, so much of the violence is dialed way back and they just shot the reaction of the one goon. Great reaction and hope you enjoy the third film as well. All three of the movies are very different creatures, but all great films in their own right. Also, take note of how much better Nolan got filming the fight scenes and choreography with Batman from film to film. It slowly progresses from quick cuts and chaotic scenes to longer takes. Also, as an aside, I STRONGLY recommend the rest of Nolan's films. Especially The Prestige and Interstellar..... Would love to see those on your list at some point if you haven't already seen them yet.

NotlobParrot

This was a WONDERFUL reaction. It was a rare, fascinating treat to watch you go in cold and see Harvey "Two-Face" Dent for the first time, figuring out what makes him tick, not from having read comics or watched other movies, but from a well-told story unfolding in front of you. I kept waiting for an "Ohhh Two-Face, I've heard of him I think. Is this him?" 🤔 (*Just became a Patron this week, btw. SO glad I did!! ❤️️🔥)

YannickWega

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! and for me personally the best character of this film is Two Face! I really liked Aaron Eckhart in this film and everyone just talks about the joker when it comes to Dark Knight. Don't get me wrong, the joker was really good, but I personally love this movie because of the story of Harvey Dent. And his quote in his final moments and his OST will always get me chills ^^

ISeeTrees ofGreen

I dunno if anyone else has said it but the fundraiser scene when the joker first comes up to rachel was actually the first time maggie had scene heath in his full makeup and add in the fact that heath sort of improv'd that scene with her IIRC, that fear you saw on rachels face was maggies actual real reaction to heath

Jai Nelson

Ha, never thought of that. Definitely very in character for him if true.

Bobby Manhas

I'm so happy you noticed the yin and yang imagery in that final scene between Batman and The Joker!

Emily Smith

Gary Oldman is the famous Commissioner Gordon character from the Batman universe. He is Batman's 'inside man' in the Gotham City Police Department. He is in charge of the bat signal and clearing the path to let Batman do what he does best. :) If you get a chance, I also recommend the series Gotham. It was really well done and is a good introduction to several characters in the Batman universe, including some of the more obscure ones like the Mad Hatter and Solomon Grundy. In addition to the Gotham series, check out some the game or at least some scenes from the video game Batman Arkham Asylum. Not only does it have a PHENOMINAL story line and great movie-like graphics...it has some of the VERY BEST voice acting I have ever heard and is headed by the famous Mark Hamill (the original Luke Skywalker) who voiced The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series (which is also amazing!) Now I am saying all of this from someone who is really not and has never been into comic books, superheroes and the like. That being said, I will absolutely give credit where it is due and the Batman Universe has been a stand out among comics since it's creation. :) Two thinks you should know about Batman that makes him special... First, is that he never kills people. He doesn't use guns and although he will take you out, you won't die. His goal is to put villains in prison. Second, of all the superheroes - he is the only one who could be seriously based in reality. He is not some mutant with superpowers. He never was irradiated or subjected to some horrible experiment gone wrong. He's not an alien or from a different world. He is just a rich vigilante with an arsenal of realistic weapons and tools - many of which are actually used by police and military (granted, real ones are not bat-shaped...) who happens to know and be really good at various forms of martial arts.

Darryl Low

Enjoyed your reaction to this movie Nat and am looking forward to watching the third movie with you. Thanks for all of your work this week. I think we've covered all the emotions. Have a great weekend Nattie G 💛

Scott Greene

As someone once said..."Hi."

To be fair though, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is a bit of an unreliable narrator in his own right. So even tho it's his "origin", you still kind of walk away from the movie not necessarily knowing 100% what "really" happened. That in of itself is Joker-esque. We're shown his past; but it is multiple choice.

Balkyne

Or more specifically, Oldman is playing Comissioner Gordon, a very common character in Batman lol

Balkyne

"You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain" Yup, this line spread like wildfire and became reused all over the place, but I believe it came from this movie yeah.

Anonymous

All these years later, this is still my favorite Batman movie (and yes, I grew up with the Burton Batman and the animated series), and easily one of my favorite comic-book movies. I don't think it's the best comic-book movie ever made, in that it doesn't feel like a comic-book (like say, an Avengers movie). But it's definitely the best movie I've ever seen that FEATURES comic-book characters. The movie feels like a crime drama, that just so happens to be about Batman, Jim Gordon, Harvey Dent, and Joker. And unlike previous Batman movies (except "Begins"), even though the villains and supporting characters are much more prominent and focal in this movie, it still feels like Batman's film at the end of it, in that HE is the one who has to make the sacrifice for the greater good. Despite his noble intentions in "Batman Begins", he leaves this movie in far worst shape, as he takes the blame for Harvey's crimes, all in the name of keeping Gotham's soul and reputation intact. The stakes for Gotham have never felt THIS high, despite the fact that the city itself isn't necessarily in danger from a physical threat; but rather a philosophical and moral one. Definitely my favorite of the trilogy, and one of my favorite movies period.

Anonymous

Next time, I really want to count the amount of times that Nat says "Oh goodie."

Anonymous

Heath Ledger deservingly gets all the shine for his performance, but I really do agree that Aaron Eckhart was fantastic as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. I'm a huge comics fan, and am used to versions of Harvey where he's already emotionally/psychologically scarred before becoming Two-Face. But here, I appreciate that they treated him as a legit heroic character, who becomes victim to the circumstances around him, as opposed to any internal character flaw. Makes his descent into Two-Face much more tragic. End of the day, Harvey Dent is supposed to be a tragic character in the Batman mythos, and this movie absolutely nails that, thanks to the writing and Eckhart's performance.

Anonymous

A pretty cool Easter Egg early on in the film: the Joker’s mask during the bank robbery scene was based on a very similar mask worn by Caesar Romero as the Joker in an episode of the 1960s Batman series.

Anonymous

Even as a diehard Marvel and MCU fan I have to concede that this is probably the best superhero movie made.

Ryu Kobushi

Harvey Dent's face as Two Face was done with CGI/VFX no make-up involved, lol. Just some dots on his face and multiple cameras to capture movement and different exposures

Ben Wheeler

There are so many quotes from this movie that have entered the general pop culture lexicon. "Die a hero/live to see yourself become the villain," "The hero we deserve but not the one we need right now." "Here...we...go." "Let's put a smile on that face." Why so serious." "Some men just want to watch the world burn." "How about a magic trick?"

Anonymous

I was Taken to the top of the mountain by Liam Neeson where I acquired a specific set of skills. Does that count?

Allan Rumberger

THAT'S why I recognized him in Ant-Man. And then when I recognized him again today (haven't seen this one in a while).

Tom Fehr

not sure if you've seen A Knight's Tale but that's another very wonderful and wholesome/funny movie to watch with Heath Ledger!

Anonymous

The elderly guy Joker threatens at the party while looking for Dent is Vermont senator Patrick Leahy. He’s a very well known Batman fanatic and has had cameos in several other Batman movies.

Aaron

A wonderful drama Heath Ledger was in was a Mel Gibson film called "The Patriot". Maybe a reaction for the 4th of July coming up?

Anonymous

This one definitely deserves a rewatch just to "savor all the little emotions" to quote the joker. PLEASE, PLEASE, include in the next reaction of the series the debrief of this movie with Tyler, it's such a great movie to talk about.

Justin Credible

The plane was the South Korean smugglers he and Alfred talked about hiring.

Growing up as a 90s kid I don’t think there was any way you wouldn’t know anything about Batman. There was the cartoon, the Tim Burton Batman movies with Michael Keaton (which is funny/weird to see him play a villain in Spider-Man with Tom Holland). Also, my mom was a huge action TV/movie fan and so we would watch all the 60s-70s-80s superhero shows (Batman, Wonder Woman, The Hulk). So some parts surprised me that you didn’t know, like who Two-Face was and that Jim Gordon was always (to me) Commissioner Gordon. Oh! And when Batman suddenly vanishes all the time, it’s a known Batman thing. 😅

Ben Violette

It's definitely worth a rewatch. I've seen it a couple times but even caught some new stuff rewatching it with this reaction. Glad you enjoyed it. Such a good movie

DeadStillEating

Getting to be about time to watch a Knights tale.... where else can you see the Joker team up with Robert Baratheon and a pre-serenity Wash to, with the help of an all too often nude Vison, take the medieval jousting world by storm? Also, music by Queen.... It's called a lance... ELLO!

Jon Hoover

"Should do fine against cats.". That's an easter egg that Natalie didn't get, unfortunately.

Chris (darkwater)

This renewed my love for Heath's Joker. Amazing work.

Sinewmire

It was a real treat to see you'd reacted to this! The Dark Knight is full of meaning, the most obvious one being The War On Terror. You said you liked how Batman Begins' theme was Fear. I'm not sure if The Dark Knights' theme is Terror or Madness. The Nolanverse is great for seeing characters embodying concepts, and Batman being forced to come to terms with them. I was pleased to hear you say the Joker's aim seems to be trying to make people kill each other, you're right. Almost all his plots involve trying to turn people into murderers, or trying to prove that they were already murders - even his kidnapping of Harvey and Rachel. He says "killing is making a choice, one life or another". Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, I really enjoyed seeing it again for the first time, vicariously, if you get me.

NFXx

Awesome to watch your reaction to The Dark Knight. Can’t wait to see you watch The Dark Knight Rises again and now that you have abetted understanding. The funny thing about Heath and Joaquin portrayals of The Joker is they’re really not the true Joker character, Heath maybe being a little closer. Like you said about Joaquin’s Joker origin story isn’t anything like The Jokers origin. The Jokers origin story is after an encounter with Batman he accidentally falls into a tank of acid and left his skin bleached, hair green and lips red and it drove him into insanity and he becomes The Joker. He actually doesn’t wear make up at all, although in some comics he does wear red lipstick. It’s also known that sometimes he twists his story so some of it can be true, some of it not. Like how he changed his story about his scars. Nolan did take some inspiration from the book The Killing Joke which is about The Jokers origin. But there is a lot of other things they left out about The Joker. You should watch Batman 89 as well, which is the closest portrayal to the comic Joker. You should play the Batman Arkham games too. It’ll give you a great introduction to a well established Batman world with all the bat family, villains and other characters. Plus Mark Hamill voices The Joker and before the Arkham games The Batman Animated series and other shows and animated films as well. He’s been voicing him for almost 30 years.

Anonymous

He talks in his batman voice anytime he's in the suit because it's like he becomes this other person. When the suit is on he is no longer Bruce Wayne. That's the justification why he does that when he's around someone that knows his identity.

Anonymous

I got to see this when it was in theaters, and seeing it on the big screen in surround sound was wild! Even the quieter monologues felt like they had greater weight, but it’s still an awesome movie at home! I don’t think Joker’s origin story has every been conclusively told even in the comics, it’s always been a sort of “whatever I feel like telling today” or a “choose your own origin story” with him, but for this movie, a very compelling theory and one I really liked, was that the Joker was an ex-soldier, very likely one that was captured and tortured, and now getting back at the society that “made him”. It accounts for his skills in weapons, as well as his ability to manipulate both Batman and the police. Not definite, but a good possibility. Either way, an excellent Joker and an excellent movie!

Lucifer Moon

Hey, my name is Alice. I have been a big fan and supporter of your videos for awhile and it would mean so much to me if you would do a full-length reaction to Cloud Atlas. It is my favorite movie of all time and you are my favorite reactor ( and I follow ALOT of reactors LOL ) and because you are my favorite I would for you to react to my favorite movie. I know it is a big ask but it would really mean a lot. NO ONE has done a full-length reaction to Cloud Atlas ANYWHERE on the internet. So please please consider doing a full-length reaction to Cloud Atlas.

MAFAL

I concur with this, especially if it's true no one else has done it. It's at least 3 hours long, which is probably why. But definitely a mind-trip of a movie.

zak

To answer your question as to why Bruce was talking like Batman even though Fox knows who he is, it's because Batman has become a persona, when he wears the outfit that's who he is, Harvey/Two-Face is a dark mirror of those dualing identities, much like Joker is a mirror to Batman's order and justice.

Anonymous

Commissioner Gordon is based on... Commissioner Gordon

YodatheHobbit

I believe t was actually the alcohol just he drank which came out of his chin I believe, not a piece of Dent's skin. Imagine drinking knowing only half of it will go down your throat, while the other leaks out of your face.

Anonymous

Gonna watch this when I get back from this drive

Anonymous

A lot of Batman’s villains are twisted reflections of him. There’s a interesting little documentary called A Mirror for the Bat that explores that.

Ben Curran

omg. Gotta go shopping, then this is the first thing i'll be doing. I know you will 100% love this. It's one of my fav movies ever and Heath made the movie!!

Greg McDaniel

You might be Batman fatigued after the next one, but I'd love it if, at some point, you checked out the 1989 Batman film directed by Tim Burton.

Alan Kobb

Hey, Natalie! Why is it that you grouse at Littlefinger for talking like Batman, but you never criticise Batman for talking like Littlefinger? Double standard? :-)

Coojw

If you want to see Heath Ledger in another another great movie, watch the patriot starring mel gibson

Thomas Malley

she brought up a valid point. why was he using that voice with people who knew who he was?

Martin Heron

If you want another Heath Ledger movie and you've not seen A Knight's Tale, you gotta see A Knight's Tale. A real good fun one, plus it's got Alan Tudyk!

Anonymous

Jokers backstory has never truly been cemented, even with the killing joke story, others on the comics contradict it, which is part of the mystique of the character, all the other villains have a reason/motivation for turning out the way they did, crane, twoface, riddler, freeze, etc, and they also have another persona, like kent in twoface and cobblepot is penguin, but joker is just joker nobody really knows who he is or why he his what he is, which i like that they gave the nod to that in this movie, when they arrest him, no ID not hits on his finger prints or dna and then him telling people a bunch of different reasons for the scars, hes just “an agent of chaos”. And even though he’s animated mark hamill is the best joker

Anonymous

I think it's going to be a very short YouTube edit. Natalie seemed to be stunned silent through much of the movie, particularly when The Joker was on screen or working his manipulations.

Anonymous

1:50:33 "I'm really impressed with hair and makeup every time I see his face" The scar prosthetics are done by the makeup team, but IIRC Nolan let Ledger do his face paint himself as part of his process.

Jill Finlayson

I really really do adore this movie. I definitely recommend watching it again sometime because there is so much there that moves so quickly and is hard to catch. One of my favorite parts you may have missed in the Jokers first scene with the mob when he comes in with the grenades attached to his suit is the one mobster Gamble says "You think you can steal from us and then just walk away?" And the Joker says "Yeah" and just the casual delivery of that line is SO hilarious to me. Between Joker and Harvey Dent's characterizations and acting, not to mention Gordon and Batman, and the non-stop plot twists this is absolutely my favorite super hero movie! Also the MCU in this movie stands for major crimes unit though it's funny those initials mean something different to us all now haha

Joe Blankenship

I hope you watch the 89 Batman after the Nolan trilogy. It’s still my favorite, with Dark Knight a close 2nd.

Texas Anla'Shok

I found it quite amusing when you said, "It's all part of the plan." And you said it almost the way the Joker said it later.

Anonymous

More of Nolan's vision of Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises"!! I've watched the trilogy many times just cause I love this portrayal of the dark crusader. I've also noticed that Joker is the complete opposite of Batman who is logical and reasonable. The Joker is chaotic and unjustifiable. Batman's next foe is going to be a little more challenging in a different way from this. Nolan really knows how to bring something new to the table EVERY TIME!!

Anonymous

Same here! Joker was being so matter-of-factual it was funny and amusing lol

Anonymous

With you having already watched Dunkirk, Inception and now The Dark Knight Trilogy...there are other Nolan films I’d recommend, well actually all of them but for watch along purposes...Memento, The Prestige, and Interstellar. Actually to complete (at least for now) his obsession with time might as well throw Tenet in there. On a non Nolan note, a few Edgar Wright films I would check out Baby Driver, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I would also recommend diving into,if just for your own viewing, The Coen Brothers, you might be familiar with The Big Lebowski based on your End Game commentary...but highlights Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou, No Country for Old Men, but their whole filmography is tremendous. So many others to recommend too many to list.

Ellis Hugh

This is simply one of the best films ever made, so much so that it transcends its genre as a 'super-hero' movie and becomes one of the great crime dramas of all time. Sadly, I think the untimely death of Heath Ledger (RIP) cast a pall on the entire franchise and the third movie may well be the worst film Nolan has ever made, replete with uncharacteristic plot holes and inconsistent character portrayals. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the wake of the excellent Batman Begins and the transcendent Dark Knight. It's not unusual though, the third movie of a trilogy has traditionally been its weakest, whether we look at the Godfather, the Matrix movies, the Alien films and too many other examples to count.

Ellis Hugh

The most fascinating explanation of the Joker I've ever heard is the idea that he's a schizophrenic, with his subconscious genius self playing 5D chess and setting all of these elaborate plans in motion, carefully manipulating people and events to choreographed perfection... while his conscious mind runs around, thinking his actions are random and chaotic, with the fact that everything seems to work out just proof that the universe agrees with him. As far as his origin (in the films at least) it's become widely accepted that he was previously in the military, possibly working in some sort of Psy-Ops role. There are a number of hints throughout the film that supports that likelihood.

Anonymous

One of the things to note about the Joker is that 1. Like in the movie, his origin, and how he describes it changes all the time. And 2. In arguably the most popular comic book origin story for the Joker, he's a standup comedian that gets turned into this incredible supervillain literally overnight because of "one bad day". And this film, as well as a number of Joker comics, play into that. The Joker trying to prove that one truly awful day can turn anyone down this awful road that he is on, just like he did to Dent here. Aside from that, with the untimely end of Heath Ledger and his Joker portrayal and Harvey and Rachel's deaths, the finale for the trilology has to both wrap up the series while also introducing quite a few new characters to play alongside Bruce, Alfred, and Gordon. It doesn't have this beautiful, cohesive chaos that TDK has, in part because of that, but I still think DKR is a great end to the trilogy even if it doesn't live up to TDK in some people's eyes.

Anonymous

I honestly personally HATE, nay, LOATHE the fan theory that the Joker is ex-military. It's always been accepted that no one knows his history. This crazy, maniacal, anarchist Genius comes out of nowhere and is the literal antithesis of Batman. The Yin to his Yang. Him being in the military not only humanizes this monster of a man but implies that he was good before becoming the Joker. Why does everyone have to have a background? I find it much more frightening to think that this man is, as Alfred described, a man who "just wants to watch the world burn". Fan theories can be fun but with the Joker I find the unknown to be much more fun in regards to his backstory.

Garrick Smalley

This is my favorite Joker. Heath Ledger did an amazing job. Cesar Romero is my second favorite.

Don Britt

Since she's unfamiliar with a lot of the Batman universe, I don't think that's an easter egg she would pick up one quite yet.

Anonymous

I enjoyed your reaction, Natalie! Two-Face is one of the major Batman villains in the comics. He was portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones in the series directed by Tim Burton.

Vidcutter

During the hospital scene, when the bombs were going off, the pyrotechnics team had a glitch on set, which is why there was a delay in the explosion--it wasn't planned! Heath Ledger was improvising playing with that prop detonator because he was staying in character, and when he jumped when the explosions went off, that was a real reaction. The improv was so good (obviously) and true to character, that Nolan knew he couldn't NOT use it, rather than cutting to keep the timing on the explosions rhythmical

Anonymous

Another great reaction as always. There's a theory about Coleman Reese, the guy who tried to blackmail Fox. The theory is that he thought Fox was just working with Batman on the side (which is true) and skimming off the top but didn't actually think that Batman was Bruce until Fox explained it to him; and that his expression isn't him realizing how bad an idea it was to try blackmailing a billionaire-crimefighter (Bruce) because he was actually just trying to blackmail an executive with a secret (Fox). Like blackmailing Elon Musk's barber vs blackmailing Elon Musk himself. Also, if you're at all interested in going deeper into the ethical ramifications of the secret cellphone spying part in the movie if super recommend the show Person of Interest, made by Jonathan Nolan, who is Christopher Nolan's brother, and also worked on this film and the following film.

This is a myth. There was no glitch. Just a slight pause between pyrotechnics and actual demolition charges. The pause was planned by Nolan as a means to do the scene practically and keep Ledger safe. Nolan confirmed this to be the case in the special feature Gotham Uncovered: Creation of a Scene that was part of The Dark Knight's home release.

Just want to pop in really quick and clarify that Joaquin Phoenix's Joker was not the origin story for this, or any other Joker. It is its own original take on the character.

I would move out of cities imo nat. From what I saw touring your country years ago , its a very beautiful place outside the concrete. Half of America is green and alive.

DC strongest legacy is it's ability to give it's heroes the villans they deserve. This film encapsulates that in every scene with Batman and the Joker on screen. Heath Ledger gives the Joker such a powerful on screen performance that even if you tried you can't forget it . It's a performance that has been talked about for years and will be for many years to come.

Lilla Kriger

I always liked that line because it referenced the first movie with him travelling with criminals all over Asia 😄

Vonlinchen

Ugh, but it's so cringe. A revisionist, nationalist propaganda piece, just like Braveheart. Though Braveheart is less cringe.. but still, it's even more of a travesty to historical accuracy than The Patriot.

Vonlinchen

I believe Ledger designed the Joker's makeup himself, while creating the character, but the makeup team actually did it for filming.

Vonlinchen

Which completely contradicts the Joker's assertion that he's an "agent of chaos", showing instead that he is infact a master strategist.

I liked it when Gordon meets Dent regarding getting the search warrant for the five banks and he calls Dent the white knight in their conversation and in the end he calls Batman the dark knight, nice script writing. Poetic. Anyway, enjoyable reaction. :)

I still prefer Batman Begins to the Dark Knight in terms of what I think is the better Batman movie. It's obviously all subjective and dependent on personal taste, but I prefer a more stylized Batman world( Batman 89 is still my favorite Batman film). I know Nolan was going for a more real world look and feel. In Dark Knight, Gotham didn't feel like Gotham, it was just Chicago(where they filmed), and in Batman Begins, they at least tried to give the look and feel of Gotham it's own identity. Also, I hate the new Batsuit in this, it just looks like a black tactical suit. I still really enjoy Dark Knight, but I don't hold it in as high regard as others do. Heath is fantastic as Joker and carries the film.

Ohh, you should watch A Knights Tale

Ortizmo2000

Your reaction to the pencil scene is pretty much every reaction of everyone who's ever watched this with me for the first time was. :oD

This_Jedi_crafts

I love the layers of paranoia and suspicion created by the writing and characters. But I'm with Nat - let's move out of Gotham, if this is how it's going to be!!

Here's an idea how you can tie two recent things on your channel together, Batman and branching out into animated movies: The Lego Batman Movie. Except this might be a terrible idea, it's filled to the brim with references to not just Batman and DC, but even other movies and shows. Who knows how many of those you've seen. Or it's a great idea because of how much you love nerds explaining little scenes to you in your comments. Do you? I can never tell...

Obsolyeet

I think this is the best Batman movie with DKR a close 2nd. And it's no surprise this move grossed over $1B. Such great, memorable characters. Yes, Heath stole the show and earned a well deserved Oscar, but I think Aaron Eckhart's depiction of Harvey Dent/Two-Face that was the glue for this movie. It kept everything about the movie in balance so I enjoyed seeing him get some love in the comments above. I also love this movie because so many scenes were shot in Chicago and I have connections/memories to many of the locals seen there. The mayor's speech and also the scene where Batman is playing chicken with the Joker in the street was all shot on LaSalle St (mainly between Jackson and Madison streets. That is the big financial district in Chicago so it is rather deserted on the weekends. LaSalle St. has been used prominently in movies because directors apparently think that corner looks like NY/Gotham because of all the pillars in the background (that corner is the Federal Reserve Bank, the Chicago Board of Trade, and the Continental Illinois Building). You can rent a bike right downtown and ride around those streets on the weekends and it's a little eery but mostly soothing to be surrounded by all these skyscrapers and still have it be so calm and quiet.

Papi Dillion

you should check out Brokeback Mountain. Heath ledger and Jake Gyllenhal are so good and the movie is really really intense

Papi Dillion

It was really cool to see your reaction to this movie, knowing that you have no Comic book knowledge of character names. I saw this movie and knew exactly that Harvey Dent was already the iconic Batman villain Two Face. Was really cool to see you learn those details for the first time. You should watch Batman and Batman Returns directed by Tim Burton. Jack Nicholson's pedrail of the Joker is also iconic and inspired the Joker that Mark Hamill (Actor who plays Luke Skywalker) voices in Batman the animated series.

Al Baughman

Always enjoy your reactions, in my opinion this is the 3rd best in the trilogy, still great, like a 9.7 but I like the other 2 more. Excited for the finale!

Niknok Seyer

This is the best Batman film for me. Probably best DC film too. Joker scenes were all epic. And Harvey Dent / Two-Face arc was definitely interesting.

Connor Ellis

Gary Oldman isn't a Robin. He's playing his character, James Gordon, Batman's connection to the police.

Connor Ellis

Harvey's face is CGI.

Lee Gannon

Tommy Lee Jones was Two Face in the Joel Schumacher directed Batman Forever while Harvey Dent was played by Billy Dee Williams in the first Tim Burton film.

ropecrewman36

I second the motion! Also, the movie is still pretty funny and engaging even if you don't understand all of the references. I think after this trilogy she'll know just enough to enjoy it. (But I wouldn't complain if she watched the Burton films and the 1966 movie with Adam West, next)

G. T. Blackwell

Nothing to do with Batman, but I would love a reaction to Apollo 13. So good.

I remember seeing this in the theatre knowing the Joker was going to be an epic character from what I'd seen in the trailers, but the biggest surprise was how well Harvey "Two-Face" Dent was played and introduced. Batman has always had the best and most interesting villains in the stories.

JarHead0351

Heath Ledger is a good actor - Love the "10 things I hate about you" & "Knight's Tale" are both great to watch - another good movie Now You See Me is another great movie which has you guessing what you think you saw but did you with a good cast too

JarHead0351

No Strings on me - was from Avengers -Age of Ultron

Nathan Elkin

The best part of this is you finally watching this movie. The worst part was how much you don't realize you missed. Other than that, thank you.

Jai Nelson

Anybody know what we’re watching today?

For more Heath Ledger you should watch a Knights Tale.

Fun fact. The skyhook thing batman used to pull him out of the building in Hong Kong is actually a real thing that was used by the CIA in the 50s and 60s.

Is it me, or is her cam quality off in this?

Ever since The last Crusade I have noticed the the same too

Out of sync for me, have to pause my movie multiple times to the point I stop all.

Great reaction Nat! One thing I loved that most don't pick up on is that the Joker told the cop in the interrogation that in their last moments people show you who they truly are. Then in the end when he was plummeting to what he thought would be his death he was laughing maniacally.

Danny Miller

This may have been pointed out already since I’m a little late to the party of watching this reaction video, but Heath Ledger drew inspiration for his portrayal of The Joker from Malcolm McDowell’s Alex from ‘A Clockwork Orange’.

Lisa Tosti

Also I love that in when Rachel realizes what is about to happen, she tries to reassure Harvey showing how good and selfless she is.

Ok i love your content, but homie we need to talk physics
