I'm sure some one pointed this out already but Tesseract was taken from some village in WWII. Then dropped into the ocean and found by Howard Stark at the end of Captain America and at that point Government/SHEILD had it Dr. Mar Vel was working with/for Gov so prob got to it that way. Florken ate it in 1996 and passed it at some point and I'm assuming SHEILD had control of it again. Then Lokie has it for a bit then it gets sent back to Asguard where Lokie steal it again during Ragnarok and Thanos takes it in Infinity War.

Robert Emmett

Natalie you made the right choice not looking up the history of the name origin cause you saved yourself a deep dive into the world of stupid and petty comic company lawsuits across 3 separate publishers lol.

Here we go!!

Martin Firth

Happy to see you back Natalie! I'm keen as a been for this one!

Justin Credible

Glad you're back. I hope all is well now.

What a lovely surprise welcome bk Nat 💛 this is going to be a lot of fun 🙂

Anonymous

I was hyped for this moment.

Welcome back Nat! We missed you. Hope all si well!

Andy Jordan

Lovely to see you again, Nat. I hope you're doing okay, all things considered, and that your time off with your family was good. Thank you, as always, for all you do. Cheers.

Valar Dohaeris

So happy you are back... You have been missed.

Darryl Low

Great to have you back Nat 💛 "That can't be good for the leather". If there's a fashion faux pas Nat, you always spot it 😄 Your face when Goose showed his true colours was a picture. The "Vers" comes from what was left of her name tag Carol Danvers. This movie is a lot of fun and it was great to watch along with you as you figured it all out. Really looking forward to Endgame. Thanks for a great video today Nat.

Andrew Dickinson

Marvel Comics or Captain Marvel, which came first, well thats an interesting question :) Which Captain Marvel are you talking about :) Think Shazam! should be on the list for a reaction.

Anonymous

Welcome back, Nat. :)

Nice Hat Nat

Captain Marvel. I would say the most middle-of-the-road MCU film. My expectations were a bit high after the last origin MCU movie (Black Panther which I really adored). All in all, solid action film, I just wish it wasn't another "wise father figure is secretly evil" story. MCU loves its daddy issues almost as much as the DCEU loves its mommy issues.

Ilsuk Yang

Natalie, don't forget about Spider-Man: Far From Home after Endgame! Also, I suggest watching WandaVision in 3 episode spurts and Falcon and the Winter Soldier in 2 episode spurts. Anyways, just a suggestion! Also, welcome back!

Andrew Dickinson

Is it me, or is the Youtube vid audio slightly out of synch, 0.5 seconds or so?

Danishprince

Welcome back Nattie <3

codenamewitch xx

This was the first movie to be released after Stan Lee’s passing - I absolutely love the intro being dedicated to him. Additionally, the since Chadwick Boseman’s passing the Black Panther intro has been changed to just him as a tribute in the same fashion.

Randee Carreno

Happy Marvel Monday, Natalie! 😊 Happy that you're back. This was a good movie. Not one of my top favorites, but still a good movie. I always love seeing Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. We finally found out how Fury lost his eye in this one. Don't forget, we still have "Spider-Man: Far From Home" after "Endgame". That will be the end of Phase 3. Up next: "Avengers: Endgame". Not giving you any spoilers, however be sure to have lots of tissues, chocolate, and maybe some wine or any alcohol on hand for this one. Have a great day! 😊 Until the next video, Stay Golden! 💛

Anonymous

Now that this difficult hurdle is over with, Endgame will be a nice cap to it all. Cant wait for the next reaction😊

Troy B.

You're back! I'm so happy, I could even sit through another viewing of Captain Marvel! (But I kid my 23rd favorite MCU movie. [Edit: Sorry, 22nd. Forgot about Thor: Dark World.])

Basit

Glad you're back. Can't wait for Endgame.

Patrick Egan

Fun fact: Stan Lee's cameo has him rehearsing lines for the movie Mallrats, which he actually appeared in as himself, and came out around the time this movie was set.

Anonymous

Welcome back! You finally reached Endgame, my all time favorite. During the end credits the way they did the original 6 avengers is pretty cool, would like to see your reactions to it and also no post credit scene however there's a sound effect at the end, would like to see if you can guess correctly what that is.

Cavfan

The real question is "Will Nat make it to the Marvel logo in Endgame without needing tissues?"

Anonymous

Glad you’re back!

Joe Blankenship

Missed you, Natalie. I never saw Firefly so I started on that last week to hold me over. Can't wait for this one. Seems like Cpt Marvel got mixed reviews, but I really liked it. Brie Larson is great.

Anonymous

Hey Nat, I hope your getting thru everything OK now. Welcome back, or should I say, "Welcome Home"

Kevin Mowery

So glad you're back. Downloading this now and planning to watch it as soon as I'm done with work in a few hours. I've been looking forward to this reaction.

JediLounger

Natalie Gold: The Hat Returns.

Ilsuk Yang

So, Carol's powers allow her to absorb energy attacks and enhance her own powers. What Marvel Studios genrally does is make their versions of the comic book characters much weaker than their comic book counterparts. They did not do that with Carol Danvers. They made her powers almost exactly the same as her comic book counterpart.

Anonymous

I hope all is well Natalie. Great to see you back. Been waiting patiently for your Endgame vid! As far as Captain Marvel, I’ll just wait for your shortened YouTube version. 😬

Patrick Egan

I still think Katee Sackhoff would have been a better choice to play Carol, even if it would feel like she was playing Starbuck again.

Inhale Burrito

I'm hoping for endgame this week. I feel like ive been waiting a month.

Anonymous

Good to have you back! hope everything is ok back home

Anonymous

Fantastic ('Marvellous' even!) to have you back Nat :) Been looking forward to both this and Endgame for a while now - my evening is now sorted!

Tranquil_Gnome

There is one more movie after Endgame. Don't look it up yet. Possible spoilers. We will tell you what it is after you watch Endgame. PS Welcome back.

Sam Tahiri

good to have you back <3 hope you're feeling better

Troy B.

Okay, I've actually ended up liking this movie a lot more two years later, not in theaters, and knowing what *not* to expect. Still not my favorite MCU movie by any stretch, but better than I remembered.

cartoonrobot

Nat: No civilians better get hurt on your watch! Nat 15 seconds later: Why did it take so long to knock those civilians off of you you're so strong?!

Getoff Mylawn

Villains, kneel before the might of my glowyness!

Steve J

Djimon Hounsou's character on Yon-Rogg's crew shows up in Guardians of the Galaxy as one of Ronan's thugs, the guy who catches Quill at the beginning and when he says his name is 'Starlord' he the one who says "who?"

Valar Dohaeris

My only fear when I originally saw this movie was the danger of Marvel coming and cheapening the end of the 22 episodes series with this clearly overpowered last minute character... We'll see.

Ron K

I think you got the order of things mixed up a little. Now that the tesseract is out of the flurken it doesn't have to get to the wall where it was hidden in Captain America TFA cause that already happened. That part was about 50 years before Captain Marvel happens.

Anonymous

a couple of things, to help tie things together, Capt Marvel takes place after Captain America. so therefore the Teseract was in the ocean, BEFORE Capt Marvel. Iron Man, The End of Cap America and Thor all take place After Captain Marvel.

Anonymous

Someone probably answered it already. Captain America is first chronologically. It was world war 2. I believe Odin left Tesseract on earth. In world war 2 Red Skull found it. Then at the end of Captain America, Stark found it and gave it to Shield.

John

Her schedule has been pretty consistent for a while now (not counting the break last week). Nothing wrong with hoping, but I wouldn't expect Endgame until next Monday.

Nick Andress

The tesseract was found by Hydra in Norway in 1944. This movie took place in the 1990s, about 50 years after Captain America: The First Avenger. At the end of the first Captain America movie, Howard Stark pulled the tesseract from the ocean; that was in the 40s. So Shield had it since Goose puked it up. Also, you have one more movie after Endgame, but don't look it up due to potential spoilers. Then you can watch the two Marvel shows after that!

Matt Camburn

the tesseract was under ground during ww2 (captain america movie), im guessing the kree/scientist lady managed to get a hold of it after the war, then shield has it up until the avengers movies kick off

Anonymous

Your criticism of this movie was something a lot of people were saying in regards to it being a little flat. I don't want to necessarily blame it on the acting though. Throughout the movie Brie Larson's characters is told she needs to control her emotions. So for 6 years since the kree found her she had been working to avoid getting emotional. I'd like to think this was reflected in how she appeared pretty unaffected most of the time. Also her powers are derived from an Infinity Stone, so yea she's super powerful which makes things easy for her like you were saying. And yes she can breathe in space, she just didn't realize it until the end since she was still learning what her abilities actually were (like learning to fly). Can't wait for endgame!!!! Get ALL the tissues ready!!

Anonymous

Personally, I liked the movie. Was it the greatest? no but it was decent. I thought the "Hero" moment could have been more emotional with higher stakes involved. They should have picked a better writer/director for this film. Especially for a character who Disney was claiming was going to be the face of Marvel in the next phase. The two that was in charge of writing/directing to me, did not have a good enough track record to helm a Marvel film. So I put the faults of this movie on them. But that is just my opinion.

Calo Grsf

I'm glad to see you back, I hope you're feeling better! 💛 But be careful with Koda, we don't know if he's really a dog, especially with his pretty face 😛 I liked your reaction, it was fun to see you again with your beaming smiles and especially to see you singing and dancing on your chair hahaha And for the explanation of why she looks super strong, it's because "we could say that she is made of pure energy, a bit like a sun" And yes I think Brie's performance can be weird at times, but I think it's more to the team that gives the instructions behind that we should make remarks because as an actress she receives the instructions and must deal with them I think 🤔 I saw several films with her and she can be very great Anyway, it was good to see you again, and I hope you are taking care of yourself and yours, be safe and stay golden as always! 💛

Troy B.

(Unfortunately others have already mentioned it, but I commend your restraint.)

Steve J

the Tesseract's timeline is definitely all over the place in the MCU. The two ways to figure out what point in time your at in the MCU: Where's the Tesseract and what's Scar-Jo's hair style.

Gladiuswingzero

Captain marvel is a weird movie in that I actually enjoy most aspects of it, the supporting cast is really solid, the story has some good twists and I think the jokes hit more than a fair few other marvel movies, but the aspect of it I don’t really connect with is actually just... well captain marvel herself. I don’t really blame brie or the direction fully, captain marvel is a very stoic and emotionless character in the comics and making her the star of a full movie (and her introduction) is a pretty challenging thing, but what they went for didn’t work for me and I hope (like with Thor) they change her character a bit in future movies and find something that works better. Endgame is next so grab some tissues and water it’s a long one.

Steve J

yeah, she's so crazy powerful that by the time she get's her full powers nothing in the movie is even close to a threat so all feels a bit anticlimactic. In any future movies they'll either have to strip her powers or dole out some above god-level enemies. Not sure how they'll deal with the overall power-creep in MCU. At some point it's just god-being vs god-being in every movie to keep raising the stakes...

Jomero

Re: Underwhelmed by the movie, or feeling weird about how she grew to be super powerful super fast..... well, Captain Marvel is one of the more powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. And they needed to compress it to get her into the MCU. But for me, this movie's sole purpose was to give my 7 year-old daughter a super-superhero (super-superheroine?) to look up to. And considering she proudly wears her Captain Marvel pajamas to school Pajama Days, I'd say this movie did its job perfectly.

Anonymous

You've been building toward endgame for months, we had to build for literally 10 years lol. Can't wait to see the endgame reaction 🙂

Omni Jacala

I agree with you on this one: she came into her powers kinda suddenly and it's not super satisfying, but I just chalk it up to her essentially being Marvel's equivalent to a character like Superman, where they're just overpowered and it kinda takes away any stakes as a result. I'm curious what they'll do with her character in future movies, since writing for a character like Superman or Cpt Marvel is difficult for that reason. You always gotta write in a way to de-power the character somehow. I'm trying to remember when the tesseract was found before this movie. They lost it in the 40s, and then they have it in the 90s, but if I recall correctly, Howard Stark re-obtained the tesseract in the first Cpt. America movie not long after it fell into the ocean in the 40s after Steve's standoff with Red Skull, and then it was kept by SHIELD, trading hands at some point with the department where Mar-vell worked, and then eventually their experiments led to the events of the first Avengers movie in 2012.

Andrew T

I had to pause the movie and type this before I forgot. I recognized the character "Korath" as that actor who played Juba in Gladiators. Then I thought, they cast him in Guardians of the Galaxy too. At that moment Natalie recognized Ronan, that I thought, wait, did they "reuse" the actor (Djimon Hounsou) in two different Marvel movies, or...nope, he was Korath in both movies. I swear, it sometimes takes a couple views of these movies to discover the connections.

Jake Potrebic

Just as a reminder, the Red Skull found the tesseract in World War II, like 50 years before this movie takes place. Then it ended up in the end of the ocean at the end of the first Captain America. Howard Stark (tony's dad) found it. I'm not sure how Mar-Vell ended up with it after that. But then Fury had it, and began experimenting with it and eventually, that brings Loki to earth, and the rest is history.

Anonymous

Red Skull found the tesseract in the 40s. The events in this movie happened in the 90s

Anonymous

So regarding the Vers part the dog tag she has was "Carol Danvers" but then "Carol Dan" part was with maria and yon-ragg only found the "vers" part. And yes she is too powerful and that's why she was kept away for so long. She is just too powerful. And with the teseracct timeline, Red skull found it in the temple - then dropped it in the ocean - Howard stark found it - then through SHIELD it went to Mar Vell - Then fury found it in the lab - then loki got it in avengers - that was taken to keep in odins vault on asgard - then hella attacked and loki stole it to ultimately give it to Thanos. Thats the complete story we know so far for the teserract

Michael Cruse

For the sake of your sanity, DO NOT look up the history of the name Captain Marvel. It's been tangled up in legal lawsuits since the 1940s that originally had nothing to do with Marvel Comics. There have been no fewer than six Marvel characters to go by Captain Marvel - Mar-Vell was actually the first back in 1968. Before Carol though, none of them were particularly successful commercially. Good catch with recognizing the tunnel at Pegasus - that is indeed the base where the first Avengers began. Quick history of the Tesseract: 1) In Captain America, Red Skull finds it in Norway, then drops it in the Atlantic, where Howard Stark finds it 2) (not shown) It sits in a government lab, where Mar-Vell poses as Dr Lawson and begins doing research with it. 3) Carol finds it in Lawson's lab, Goose swallows it, then coughs it up on Fury's desk. 4) In the Thor end-credit scene, Fury shows it to Dr Selvig, which catches Loki's attention, and then we're off to Avengers. The first time I watched this the emotional scene in Maria's yard didn't really land either, but the second time it felt a lot stronger. Maybe because all of the gaslighting the Kree had been doing to Carol altered my perceptions, maybe I'm just weird. Shrug. Anywho. On to Endgame!

Frank Rosales

Ok so why everything was so easy for her in the end was because she was being held back by the Kree device to use all of her power. Everything you saw at the end was her at her full potential and was her first time using it to that extent so she really didn't know how incredibly over powered she really was. As you saw yes she can live in space without a breathing device another perk for her full capabilities. The Tesseract timeline Norway, Germany, Ocean, Howard Stark (Shield), Mar Vel, Kitty, Shield, Loki, Asgard, And Then Thanos if that helps.

It Hurt A Lot

I think you nailed the critique. Brie Larson was generally panned for her acting as Captain Marvel. Some compared her character to a piece of actual brie. But now everything is in place for Endgame!

Thomas Malley

Two things: they called her veers because her tag that survived the crash was broken in two and only revealed the last part of her last name Dan-vers. Second: I agree the acting in that crucial scene where she realizes her whole life was a lie is underwhelming. It’s probably the least revered of all the marvel movies, yet it was a joy watching it alongside you :)

Robert Rivers

Yo the clock was a fantastic idea

Dustin

To kind of put Captain Marvel into scale her power level is out of this world. Once she breaks the inhibiter on her neck she enters her "binary" form which is full power. She has no need for a helmet in space and is damn near invincible. Her power level in terms of who we have seen so far is pretty much outpacing all of the Avengers by a good measure, including Thor and Dr. Strange.

Opti_Frog

This movie is great fun, but it suffers slightly from a main character that is just a little bit boring. Nat is right, Carol needed to be a bit messier and larger than life. The supporting characters saves it, tho. Ben Mendelsohn as Talos is super fun, Coulson is excellent as always, Fury is on high form and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau does some heavy lifting and makes it look easy.

Frank Rosales

There was a lot of criticism for Brie Larson's performance some say it was the acting and some say it was the Directing it could be a bit of both.

Anonymous

Welcome back, looking forward to endgame next week! Prob been mentioned no end credits at the end but I feel it’s worth sitting and taking in the credits at the end.

Anonymous

It is difficult to write an interesting movie with characters at her power level; much like Superman. The inhibitor chip is their version of kryptonite, without it the plot doesn't work.

Henri

I would recommend watching the CinemaWins video for Captain Marvel whenever you get the chance. I enjoyed the movie even more after watching it, maybe you will too! He makes some pretty good points. (I don't think that there are any spoilers but maybe wait until after Endgame just to be safe)

Anonymous

I'm a big Marvel nerd and have watched all the movies several times so it doesn't surprise me when you forget some minor details but the hexagonal jump points were also used in GotG 1 and 2. It was a big comedic point when Rocket programmed over 600 in GotG 2 and everyone's faces contorted. Also Ronan was looking for the Power Stone in the 1st Guardian's movie not the Tesseract.

Anonymous

Hi, welcome back, hope you’re well. Glad to see you’re in good spirits. Unfortunately the consensus for Captain Marvel was underwhelming AF especially compared to the catalog Marvel built thus far. No worries though, Captain Marvel is definitely an outlier. There is another Spider-Man after endgame which is the latest official MCU flick. Having a blast revisiting these movies with you. Looking forward to whats next.

Frank Rosales

DC Comics has a character named Captain Marvel from when they purchased Fawcett Comics unfortunately Marvel had trade marked Captain Marvel in 1967 10yrs before the purchase so the name of the 1939 Original Character was changed to Shazam which is funny and a interesting story behind the history of the Comic book name for both Marvel and DC.

REDR58

Larson can act just fine, see her performance in “Room.” Here, her character is explicitly told to not show emotions, so getting back to that for her takes some time.

Andy Crawley

It’s funny watching your reaction to this, it’s almost exactly the same as the reaction I had when I saw it in the cinema. It’s a fun movie but not amazing, a bit cheesy in places, the writing and direction lets it down a little. The irony is that Brie Larson was panned for her performance in this, yet had won an Oscar only 4 years prior to this. Plus the directors, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, had only really made indie films before, like Half Nelson and Its Kind Of A Funny Story, so maybe they were a little overwhelmed by the scale? I don’t know. I think ultimately the scene with Maria bringing Carol back from the brink of despair was maybe a little too late in the edit. If they had shown her figuring out who she was whilst seeing those photos at the SHIELD base earlier, and spent a little more time with her feeling lost and coming to terms with Jude Law’s gaslighting of her before that speech, it would’ve landed better. One thing I would suggest for when you watch Endgame, don’t skip through the credits for the mid credits scene, watch them through for the first 5 mins, it’ll be worth it!

Heliastein

So capitain america 1 was way before captain marvel. So it's actually been found in the ocean sometime before the events of captain marvel and transfered to project pegasus. Your end of movie discussion i think it's mostly what everyone felt about this movie. Basically she's always been that powerful but the chip on her neck was limiting her severely. Once the chip was off she had full access to her powers. But yeah they definitely made her off the chart power wise.

Fraser

Great reaction Natalie as always, if the YouTube edit doesn't've have the caption "That can't be good for the leather" then what is the point in anything? lol

Stefan suchy

There are 2 MCU films where I often disagree with many MCU fans. 1. I think Captain Marvel is a great movie and I love to watch it again and again. 2 times in the cinema and 4 times at home. I found the emotional scenes very strong and also very good. I also liked the message of the film. That you have to get up again. This is nothing new, but it was presented very well. I also enjoyed the interaction between Carol and Fury. He's close to my top 5 when it comes to sole films.

Shen V

It took everyone a second to reconstruct the timeline for the Tesseract after this movie. What you remembered with Red Skull happened in the 40's though, before it went into the ocean. It doesn't even go into the ice, it melts through the plane before the crash. Proto-Shield finds it fairly quickly, which is why Mar-Vell has it available here in the 90's. After Fury finds the Flurken-vomit, we next see it in ... Avengers? Or a post-credit scene leading into Avengers. Same thing. Hope this helped, nobody can be expected to remember all of this, I probably got 3 things wrong already, and ... well, Thanos absconded with the Blue Stone at the end of Infinity War, so we're not even technically done with the damn thing :)

Anonymous

Next Monday can't come soon enough!!!!

Alan Kobb

Great to see you back, Natalie! I enjoyed your reaction. You're not the only person who didn't really get a lot out of Captain Marvel. I think some of it was the acting, but also, the fact that there was a big fake-out at the end where the enemies became friends, kind of made it hard for the audience to symphathize with them. One scene of Talos greeting his wife and child does not make it better. You're right about the costume colors. A lot of these comics came after WWII when people expected their heroes to represent "American values", so it was natural for the costumes to be red, white and blue. Red, particularly stands out on the page. A bit of it also goes back to the comic book code that required those values to be emphasized. Captain Marvel basically has the energy of the light speed engine inside her, so basically she is a human nuclear reactor. She is the most powerful avenger, by far, and probably just doesn't need air anymore. By the way, why weren't you wearing that hat for Raiders of the Lost Ark? Seens it would have fit right in! :-)

Robert Reichle

You are not alone. Fans that dislike something are just very vocal. I enjoyed it just fine when it first hit theaters, but I think most telling about how some people liked it is this: my wife is not a huge comic book nerd, but this is the one and only of the MCU movies where she was asking me if I was planning to buy it on Blu-ray while in the car on the way home from seeing it. She was only interested in owning this one.

MakaPeji

The events of this movie take place after the events of captain america the first avenger. "The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye." -Fury

Robert Reichle

This will be about the 7th or 8th time I've seen this movie. Not getting tired of it at all.

indaeo

Welcome back! I know a lot of people don't like this movie, for various reasons. But I think a simple fix would have been breaking it all up into 2 movies. (I know there are reasons why this didn't happen in the first place, but overall, it would have worked better.) A first movie slotted into late Phase 2/early Phase 3 with her comprehensive backstory, to make audiences get to know her and her life on Earth before becoming powerful.. kindof like they did with Steve), and ending it with her crash and gaining her powers. Then slot this one where it is, but still told in the past, of her battle with the Kree and the Krulls story, I think everything would have worked better. I enjoy this movie, but it's definitely too stuffed with all the story they had to tell to get caught up.

Kevin Mowery

The two movies I've watched the most in the year of lockdown are this and Birds of Prey. I'd recommend Nat watch BOP, but I can't recommend the DC movies that lead up to it.

Myles Away

This is probably my least favourite of the MCU. I really didn't enjoy how they demystified Fury. The way he loses his eye is very lame and really undercuts a great moment in Winter Solider. Also, while his face may look younger when he moves he is clearly an old man. If we had to see a young Nick Fury it'd be nice to see an actual young actor play the part and give the action some realism. Overall the writing felt very corny and the acting fell flat. That scene with Carol and Maria having that heart-to-heart felt very stilted. This movie probably should have come out in Phase 4 and been an entirely different script. I would have preferred the Black Widow movie before Endgame. It makes way more sense. Also, is anyone able to answer why "faster than light speed travel" is such a big deal when they can jump through those hexagon portals? Faster than light travel is a less superior technology to wormholes. I never understood that.

Kevin Mowery

Presumably the gates are faster but you can only go where there are already gates. So if the Skrulls are looking to escape the Kree, they have to be able to get to a place where it's not possibly for the Kree to get at slower-than-light speeds.

This_Jedi_crafts

I was originally so excited to see Captain Marvel in the theaters - to finally have a woman with top billing as a super hero was going to be so cool. Then, after viewing, I was a bit let down - only because it does feel fragmented and a bit forced. I'm not a writer so I'm not sure how I would have crafted "Captain Marvel" to have, essentially, "more heart," but she says a line in Endgame that sort of makes her character "make sense" (relating to being sort of the most powerful of the superheroes, to that point) and (to me) show her overall integrity (that integrity that manifests itself much differently in Captain America or Black Widow).

Anonymous

I enjoy the movie but I 100% understand why some dont. You are correct, theres not really a real hero's fall to the arc, just the artificial one in the flashbacks. Its okay. I enjoy the character of Captain Marvel (growing up, my favorite was the original Captain Mar-Vell, who was male in the books, Carol actually only took up the mantle recently, relatively speaking). I cannot wait to see the Endgame watch! And you still have one more Spider-Man and then WandaVision and Falcon/Winter Soldier. Still plenty of Marvel content to work off of, dont worry!

Patrick Armbruster

"It feels like I've been building this up for MONTHS now for Endgame..." – Yeah, a real drag. We took over a decade. :) ... But I'm looking forward to seeing you react to the MCU in real time, soon(ish). You already know that there's more to follow, and quite certainly, "Wandavision" and the other "TV Series" have to be put in the right order between the movies following "Endgame" (release date is still the best way to go, because that's how the fans saw it), so I think there'll be some tinkering for the schedule to think about. Also, while some series have 50-60 minute episodes, others are shorter, so maybe a "reaction" could consist of, say, two 25-30 minute episodes. Or even three, should they replace a Marvel movie's spot.

Jayson Phillips

Welcome back! So as far as the Tesseract, Red Skull found it in the 1940's and then Stark had it for SHIELD and im guessing Mar-Vell gained access to it till the end of this movie then Loki took it back from SHIELD and it ended up on Asguard until Loki took it again and gave it to THANOS in Infinity War.

Anonymous

Great to see you back Nat!💛 I can't believe we've only got Avengers Endgame and Spiderman far from home. What's next? WandaVision to fill the gap until the release of Black Widow on Disney+? Fresh box of tissues at the ready for Endgame.

Aaron Chandler

Don't forget about Spider-Man: Far From Home after Endgame. Please and welcome back.

William Connery

Looking forward to endgame and your next Game of Thrones posts

R.BGames37

Okay. First.. Welcome back Nat. Glad to see you again. I love this movie.. Captain Marvel is such a baddass, allthough a bit too O.P.. also the first woman lead with Superpowers in the MCU. Why i say that. Because she already flew around, before the Avengers even were around.. And Black Widow does not have superpowers. And Wanda is not a real leading character (she is mostly there to protect Vision). Who died anyway. So. Guys.. anyone ready and excited for Endgame and Spiderman: Far From Home?? I sure am.

Connor Ellis

Yeah, she's Overpowered. That's the point.

Marvel was first known as Timely Comics. It was set up in 1939 by New York magazine publisher Martin Goodman. From 1951 the company's comics were printed under the name Atlas but this was changed to Marvel in 1961. -Captain Marvel, American comic strip superhero created by writer Stan Lee and artist Gene Colan for Marvel Comics. The character debuted in Marvel Super-Heroes no. 12 in December 1967.

Few things you were wondering: "Vers" comes from her military dog tag. They wear those so they can be identified if they are damaged by an explosion or something. But her dog tag was damaged so "vers" was all that remained of "Danvers". Your timeline is a little off. Red Skull found the tesseract in the 1943. Howard Stark recovered it from the ocean and gave it to SHIELD who held onto it until Mar Vell took it for the Pegasus project. Once Goose spat it out, SHIELD took it back and did the energy experiments which is where it was for The Avengers. Her powers are very similar to the comics, but yeah, it was too easy. I would have like to see here "figure out" how to fly and do all the other stuff instead of just superman-ing it. Spider-man Far From Home is supposed to pop up on Disney+ in June, so you can see that without paying extra.

William Connery

I also love that the blockbuster and payphone didnt tip you off that it’s set in the 90’s 😉

The Captain Marvel name is one of the most convoluted issues in all of comics.

Amos T Fairchild

It's got to have a happy ending, right? I'll note that down.

Thomas Yanez

This is the fourth time I've seen the movie. I wasn't a fan of it on release, but I've watched it again along with reactors. Watching it this time, I've decided that this is actually a pretty good Marvel movie. At least, it WOULD BE, if it wasn't wrapped around the sucking vortex of negative charisma that is the lead actress's performance.

Kai

Red Skull found the Tesseract in the 1940s and it fell in the ocean until Howard Stark fished it up while looking for Steve Rogers, then it became part of SHIELD property until Dr. Lawson, or Mar-Vell used it to work on the light speed engine in the 80s/90s which is where Captain Marvel's timeline is.

john collins

not only is there a captain marvel (in this case i believe not related to marvel comics but a marvel to behold) there is also a miss marvel who was an avengers super fan turned hero.

I didn’t catch if anyone said this, but regarding the Red/Blue/Gold/White schemes. Red/Blue/Yellow (Carol) being Primary colors...these were almost consistently used as “hero” colors. While villains typically got Orange/Green/Purple (Skrulls - who are definitely more baddies in the comics.) That’s basically where that comes from. And like many others, I was really stoked for this movie. She’s one of my fave comic characters. I tried really hard to defend it, but I just can’t any more. It’s not bad, but it’s not one of the better MCU movies.

A Vicarious View

I see Carol Danvers as having a tough exterior based on her history. She grew up always being told she couldn't keep up with the boys and learned to be tough and never show her emotions. "Don't be such a girl. You can't do this. You're too emotional and it will get you killed." Humans from her past and the Kree who enslaved her all told her practically the same things. I know you weren't feeling her moment with Marie but for someone who has always been taught to repress her own humanity, Carol's stone-faced frustration was practically bawling. I felt it. All the Avenger's have very different personalities and I like how they differentiate her. She's the fish-out-of-water on Earth. She may be human but has only fragments of it. Most of what she knows has been galaxies away. She can't be sure what is normal or appropriate here or how to properly express it. Better to look strong than weak at All times. Just like Steve Rogers transformed from the guy who said "language" to someone more rough around the edges, I can see Carol slowly regaining her warmth and humanity.

Al Baughman

One of my favorite things about this movie is the amazing soundtrack! All those 90's songs really take me back. Ya know if you set a movie in a certain decade it just makes sense to have music from that decade in the movie, right? Right Wonder Woman84?!?! Ohhh right they didn't do that, what a shame.

Matthew Periolat

Others have done the Tesseract Timeline, so I’ll not repeat. You were right, this was the first Marvel release after Stan Lee’s death, so it was a Memorium for him. It’s hard for me to be impartial as my sister is a Carol. I see a lot of her, her own struggles and frailty, character and strength, in Brie’s performance and in the Carol Danvers character. Lines like “My name... is Carol.” carry weight and make me tear up because of my own hero Carol. I’m her brother, she’s always going to be a hero to me. I need to ask a favor please. With Endgame ahead, please do one thing for me - watch and record the end credits. Even if you cut them for YouTube, they’re special this time. You’ll understand when you see them. You’ll know when to cut. Appreciate it and Still Golden.

Hylaea

Carol is one of the most powerful beings in the universe. It happened fast, but, well, Infinity Stones don't really care about reasonable speed.

The music was amazing in this movie. I loved their choices. This was certainly not the best of the MCU, but there were some really good parts. I loved the relationship that was built between Fury and Danvers. I love it when Marvel builds non romantic relationships between male and female characters. Both of them had trust issues, and they learned to develop trust with each other. It is a beautiful friendship.

Erik Stevenson

I've liked CM more with each watch, but it's definitely not top-tier MCU. After thinking about it for a while, I do think most of this movie's issues come from the script and directing, moreso than Brie's acting. For a lot of the movie, shes tasked with playing a character that, because of the way the script is layed out, BOTH has amnesia and has spent 6 years being programmed to not display emotion. That creates a kind of bland character in and of itself, and the directors clearly didn't fully figure out what Carol's character was really supposed to be for the first two thirds of the movie. All of that is done to set up the 'twist' here where the Skrulls end up being the good guys, but I don't think this movie or the script actually completes that twist with enough "oomf" to make the decision worthwhile. It also means that we don't spend much time with 'flashback' Carol as she goes through the formative experiences we see snippets of, which mutes the impact when she realizes she's been lied to by the Kree. Anyway, they got a new Director and writers for CM2, so I'm really looking forward to it!

Erik Stevenson

You mean the lead actress who, because of the script, has to play a character that has amnesia while also having spent 6 years being programmed to repress all emotion?

Darren Withers

I'm glad you made the link with Ronan, however you missed one right in your face, Korath, the Kree who confronts Peter in the Temple of the Powerstone is also on Vers and Von-Rog's team.

Darren Withers

That covers this version, but the backstory on the name is interesting, too. The first Captain Marvel was released by Fawcett Comics in 1939, a year after the first appearance of Superman. It ceased publication in 1953 after a legal dispute with D.C. who claimed copyright over similarities with Superman. Marvel Comics gained the rights to use the name "Captain Marvel" in the late 60's which is when we get the first iteration of this version. D.C. gained the rights to the original version, however, with the name now in use by Marvel Comics in limited runs, they had to rename their version, which is where Shazam comes from.

Ortizmo2000

Oh my dear, you're likely not going to get "caught up" on the MCU, and I'll tell you why....... In addition to the films having been reported already in production, or in the planning stages: Spidey: FFH Black Widow (July) - WandaVision - Falcon and the Winter Soldier - Loki (June) - Agents of SHIELD - Agent Carter Yes, I realize that many have said that AoS isn't "canon" or "real Marvel" or whatever. And they're allowed to be wrong. Cuz, they are. UPDATE - Thank you REDR58 for reminding me of the five Netflix series: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders (All four characters in the same show ala Avengers). Yes, these are canon and must-sees! Anywhoo, there's always gonna be some Marvel (Mar-Vell) content for you.

Ortizmo2000

Couldn't agree more. We have to see her react to the end credits after this long journey.

Ortizmo2000

True but it's also a fun read. Clears up anyone who may have seen the recent Shazam movie and wondered why the character's original name was never uttered.

Sebastian Syrinx

I think you got a little confused on the timeline. The tesseract was in the wall in Norway in the 1940s. Then Red Skull got it, and then it got lost in the ocean, and then SHIELD got it back in the late 40s. That's how Mar-Vell had access to it for her lightspeed engine 50 years later. Then SHIELD tried using it as a power source and Loki used it as a portal to travel to Earth 17 years later in 2012.

Ellis Hugh

There is a ton of MCU stuff that's out and in production that's CANON (sorry Agents of Shield and a multitude of other stuff of varying quality). Here's a list - if you or anyone else cares - of everything you haven't gotten to yet and their current or future release dates as of this moment: 22) Avengers: Endgame April 26, 2019 23) Spider-Man: Far From Home July 2, 2019 24) WandaVision (D+) January 15, 2021 25) Falcon & the Winter Soldier (D+) March 19, 2021 26) Loki (D+) June 9, 2021 27) Black Widow July 9, 2021 28) Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings September 3, 2021 29) Eternals November 5, 2021 30) Spider-Man: No Way Home December 17, 2021 31) Hawkeye (D+) (unknown), 2021 32) Ms. Marvel (D+) (unknown), 2021 33) Dr. Strange & the Multiverse of Madness March 25, 2022 34) Thor: Love and Thunder May 6, 2022 35) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever July 8, 2022 36) The Marvels November 11, 2022 37) Moon Knight (D+) (unknown), 2022 38) She-Hulk (D+) (unknown), 2022 39) Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania February 17, 2023 40) Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 May 5, 2023 41) Fantastic Four July 28, 2023 42) Blade November 3, 2023 43) Secret Invasion (D+) (unknown), 2023 44) Ironheart (D+) (unknown), 2023 45) Armor Wars (D+) (unknown), 2023 46) Deadpool 3 (unknown), 2024 47) Captain America 4 (unknown), 2024 That's release order, incidentally, not necessarily the proper order to view them in. REALLY looking forward to your watching WandaVision, btw.

Ellis Hugh

A little something about Captain Marvel that they don't do a very good job of explaining and makes her seem a bit more OP than she actually is... Captain Marvel has some cool powers (flight, energy blasts, etc.), but her primary ability is being able to absorb energy and if she absorbs enough, she manifests her 'binary form' where she just becomes incredibly powerful and basically invulnerable - that's when she starts destroying entire starships and whatnot. Her foes haven't figured this out yet and keep juicing her up with energy blasts, hence why she seems so powerful. FWIW, your reaction to Brie Larson's performance as Captain MarySue was pretty common. She was flat and uninspirational. She lacked the hero's journey, instead she just talked shit and then had her powers show up as needed to bail her out, so there was no real investment in the character. Would have loved to see Emily Blunt or a younger Charlize Theron in this role. Unfortunately, people who voiced those opinions were labelled as sexist misogynistic trolls who weren't ready for a female-led superhero movie (despite the collective love for Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman), so you're in good company! P.S. Love it when you sing - beautiful voice!

john collins

the thing on her neck was supposed to weaken her powers so much she could barely use them until the kree felt they could fully control her, I agree this makes it very easy for her to go from a hero with cool light/lazer powers to an unbeatable thor/iron man combo. For better or worse this movie came out when the whole new age female empowerment movement was at it's peak and while at it's core this movie was pretty good and does an okay job showcasing one of the strongest marvel heroes. the problem a lot of people had with this film was there seemed to be many forced "women can be as strong or stronger than men" moments this typically slides under the table for the vast majority of viewers with a proud nod from some women and a scoff from some men but Brie Larson made a very big deal about it during the press tours for this movie and on social media, i won't say whether or not she is in end game, but it has been expressed that Brie Larson demanded that she be the strongest avenger moving into the future. even threatening to not appear in the second captain marvel film that is planned to release in phase 5. To stay true to the comic books she would be one of the strongest, not the top dog, but up there. The MCU decided to go a different way with the most powerful avenger at least, out of the heroes we have seen so far ( I won't explain who or why but you'll see as you continue watching the films and series who is the most powerful). Sadly, what could have been an amazing character like thor, loki, black widow, gemora, tony stark, or any of the other bad asses we've seen in the MCU was dampened by the over exertion of the actor wanting to showcase she's the best. Many marvel fans have called for a recast, I believe there was even an online petition a couple years afo getting millions of signatures. Hopefully Brie's ego can be kept in check for the next captain marvel appearance because the character herself is a bad ass woman who can fly through meteors and wield the power of a star and I'd love to see a performance given to match the hero I imagine she could be!

Texas Anla'Shok

I'll say the real reason I watch this is to see Nick Fury in the field. And Coulson. And you can tell when they're using CGI zero-gravity. You watch Apollo 13, that's real zero-G. They used the KC-135 "Vomit Comet" to actually simulate it. There's been a lot of comments about how Carol is too stoic or emotionless, but that can be done well. Just ask Brent Spiner. Up to interpretation as to whether it works here. And yes, I agree with you that the last battle was entirely too easy.

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

This is only my second time watching this one, once in theaters and now. I think most people have similar impressions of it. I did enjoy Brie's performance more than the first time I watched it, and I agree that part of it is the script/directing. I think they tried to do too much with this movie and think they could have trimmed down some parts. I also think this movie got a lot more viewership hoping it would lead more directly into End Game, but I do like the post-credits stuff. I'm very excited for you to watch End Game and the next movie....the TV shows Wandavision and Falcon and Winter Soldier are BRILLIANT IMO and can't wait to see your reactions to those!!

Misty Crom

I've always really liked this film. Really liked it at the cinema, really liked it again. I kinda always read the pauses in the fights as being meant to be moments between people who know each-other well? But moreover, just find it a lot of fun, and seeing all the tech we're used to seeing being 'found' for the first time - the Quinn-jet, the cloaking tech etc... As for the Tessaract, that was found in Norway in WW2. This is 1995, so this is after they found the tesseract in the ocean post Captain America. Also, if memory serves, DC comics had a Captain Marvel before Marvel did. They eventually renamed him as Shazam. Also, you didn't recognise Djimon Hounsou from Guardians also? The guy who reminded you of Drax. He's they one who first tries to get the Infinity Stone form Quill at the very beginning, just he had cybernetic stuff on his head/face, which Drax ripped out at the end.

Reece Hart

This is my favourite Stan Lee cameo. I am a big Kevin Smith fan and at the time Captain Marvel is set Stan had a cameo in his film Mallrats. The words he's muttering are the lines from that movie.

Anonymous

This is one of my least favourite MCU movies, but one thing that I noticed during this (my third?) rewatch is how visually stunning it is. Every shot, even the mundane ones like the train scene were really well done. The DP deserves a medal, this is probably one of the best shot MCU movies in my opinion.

Yani Dodge

So glad you're back and so excited for Endgame! I can't believe we're nearing the end of the Infinity Saga. I think Marvel's fun too, but Captain Marvel is definitely on the lower end of my preference and I'm kind of coming from your point of view of not knowing a lot about the comics, but I didn't connect with her as much either. Still really glad to watch it with you and hear your thoughts. Till the end of the line, CAN NOT wait for Endgame (and Black Widow!) Stay golden! Oh, P.S! If you haven't seen it before, I would absolutely love to see you react to the movie Klaus on Netflix. It's a Christmas film, but one of the best I've seen!

Yani Dodge

That's a great idea! Would've helped spread out her growth in power, and then maybe they would've had time to see her struggle and learn with them. I'd love some more Maria and little Monica too :)

Yani Dodge

Yes! If any movie deserves sitting through the credits, it's Endgame

Anonymous

I would add that Carol was probably the most successful Marvel, but early on she used Ms Marvel as one of the other characters was using the Captain Marvel name. It has only been since 2012 that used the name exclusively as her own. Other than that she spent a time as Binary and as Warbird.

Richard Ryan

Nat: "This guy reminds me of Drax!" Djimon Hounsou: (confused, head tilted) "Who?"

Brandon Scott

Larson is in reality a very talented actor. I do agree with you that the scene where Carol learned she had been betrayed doesn’t feel as high-steaks as it could but I also tend to side with some other commenters here: this is fairly close to how this character would have reacted. Playing it honestly, I don’t think Danvers, after everything she’d been through up to that point, would have really broken down. But there is a part of me that wanted to see her nearly hyperventilate as she came to grips with the truth...I just don’t think that would have been true to who she is. We just crave the drama, lol. Beyond that, if you look at the scene where she talks on the phone about her having a history on earth after seeing the photo of her with the plane, if you’ll pay attention to the subtleties on her face, she gives a very affected, VERY effective performance as her eyes glass over and tears form. As someone who spent their academic career either on a stage or in the wings, that was one of the more impressive moments I’ve seen in the MCU from an acting standpoint. Much like in vocal performance and in dance, sometimes it’s the softest notes or the most minute, delicate movements that are the most challenging and impressive. This scene and others in this film certainly meet that description.

WackySwacky

This film is a bit better on my second viewing. Brie's acting is definitely the weakest part of it.

WackySwacky

Then, it's on to the TV series. WandaVision, Falcon and Winter Soldier, and Loki.

thescourge

Captain Marvel as a movie had a couple of really difficult challenges that constrained what it could be and ultimately are responsible for the short comings you’ve identified. 1) Coming on the heals of Infinity War Marvel made a deliberate choice not to make it a super emotional, heart wrencher but to have it be a heart lightening, tour de force for the hero. Which forced them to make the challenges of the heroin a bit trivial to overcome whereas they story really did kind of demand a much more emotionally dramatic telling. 2) Captain Marvel is over powered AF for what they could throw at her in terms of raw power. You remember how easily Ronan dealt with Drax in Guardians? Well she would have to expend less energy to deal with Ronan. So basically they were hard pressed to come up with ways of keeping her power caged that didn’t get old fast and finding something powerful enough to give her a challenge (that they were prepared to reveal in this story) once they finally did take the shackles off. Most of her deficits throughout the movie (like needing a mask to breath in space as you identified) were, ultimately, only limitations because she just didn’t know she didn’t need them. And that didn’t really come across very well in amongst all the action. Having said all that, this is one of my top 5 MCU movies for the aspects they were going for which did come off: 1) MCU Backstory 2) a total POOOOOOWER hero payoff 3) Sci-Fi!!!!! 4) Fury and Carol are very cool characters 5) Very UP vibe after Infinity War

Dani

Welcome back, we missed you ❤️

First of all, its good to see you back Natalie. Hope all is well as can possibly be. One major gripe with the film I have is with the central character and her development (or lack thereof.) The focus is pretty much just on 'what she is' rather than 'who she is' as a character. I can't attribute any personally to her what so ever.

Ulrich Unterbrunner

First of all: Welcome back. A lot of the criticism aimed toward the acting of Brie Larson, but I think it is a bit misplaced. Larson is a very good actress with an incredible range. The "great emotional moment" did not transcend as well to the audience as expected, because of her exceptional acting. She stayed in character. It was the emotional moment for her, but she was trained to cover them up. It is also often mentioned, that Captain Marvel is too powerful, but this is an aspect of her binary ability. She is able to use the energy forced against her to augment her own strength. Hit her with an energy blast, you strengthen her. Refrain from doing that and fight her hand to hand, she is much weaker and can be taken off guard. Of course the movie had big shoes to fill, but for an origin story it was quite solid.

PaulChristopher

The original Captain Marvel is now known as Shazam. DC comics sued the Captain Marvel makers on the basis that it was too close to Superman. After Marvel Comics became a thing, with the name "Captain Marvel" in limbo, Marvel picked it up and created a new hero. He was originally male. The powers were eventually passed down to a female.

hey natalie Glad to see your back hope you are well to help with some questions and confusions captian america was in WW2 where as this was set in the 90's, The tessaract falling in the water was before hand then when howard stark found it in the water it landed in to shields hands as to captian marvels powers when she goes in to the glowy state its called her bianary form where she can arbsorb and output an infinte amount of energy it is very over powered and thats why she hasnt really been mentioned before hand because she would have helped in a lot of situations this has been another spew of info from your friendly neighbourhood marvel encyclopedia

Ben Gilshenan

captian marvel- flys of in to the sunset with a happy ending natalie- nooooo not your jacket it will get ruined

Ben Gilshenan

its an ending lets just say that , the movie reaches a point where it stops whether she is emotionaly stable at the end is to be determined

this week and the start of next week are going to be rough with GOT and endgame

Keep in mind this list got pushed back hard for Covid. For example Spiderman Far From home is expected in December of 2021 now.

The only thing saving Fury is Deus Ex Flerken!

Julien Grenier

After Endgame and Spider-Man Far from Home, you should watch the other two big Marvel franchises : the Spider-Man and the X-Men movies

Eric Brown

Spider-Man: Far From Home is the last MCU movie in Phase 3, not Endgame

Anthony Campbell

Don't forget Spiderman Far From Home. Its the last movie for phase 3

This movie was off. Totally out of step with the rest of the movies. It’s great you saw and felt that! In my mind it bumps up your Marvel credibility!! Now all the hate that came with this movie is a whole other subject. It real felt like this movie was politicized and people liked it or hated it more because of off screen things and not because of the film.

Anonymous

I kinda felt the same after watching Captain Marvel. It didn't have the same impact as the other Marvel films, but I can't say why. I guess it was a tad underwhelming. But after the Marvel movies you can still watch the X-Men movies, and Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.

Anonymous

I know that you are concentrating on the MCU movies, but you really need to give “SHAZAM!” a look. He’s the character originally called Captain Marvel (plus the film is more fun than this one!).

Chris Cooper

Because it is a prequel, the stakes are inherently lower - you know Fury is going to be okay. You know she isn't going to kill Ronan. You know she isn't ever going to be in real trouble. It's difficult to give her real stakes when the future has already been told.

Anonymous

The pnly reason tnis movie mad money was cuz they marketed it between the 2 hughest paid mkvies of all time, they turned Fury into a joke, made Thor pointless and the eye tbing from Winter Solder is. Ow a joke instead kf a bad ass

Thanks for the cut off badd ass war story

Brad Bunch

Carol Danvers just isn't a "messy" or emotional character. She's as confident and arrogant as Thor, but not nearly as emotional. Think Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) or a typical '80's action hero. I don't know if Marvel wrote the movie script to reflect that, or if Brie Larson and the film's director made the choice to play her that way, but her attitude in the film is pretty spot-on for the character.

Thomas Malley

thanks to the timer you were completely in sync with the music when you were singing along with the songs :)

Anthony Campbell

I can't agree more with you about this movie. My third least favorite of all of them. Don't let Twitter here you criticize Captain Marvel. 🙄

I'm glad to see you again here, i hope everything goes better. Don't know if you realized or if someone commented this before but... the black guy from the kree squad that was with Carol is the same that tried to stop Starlord at the beggining of Guardians Vol1 ^^

Douglas Baker

The reconnection scene of Vers remembering Carol through all the gaslighting landed hard on me, I suspect because I have recovered from such brainwashing tactics. It's oversimplified and distorted here because the process takes months to years of little moments similar to this, and neither the story nor the film have time to dedicate to such a series of rediscovery. I'm happy for you all that feel that scene was just off and don't understand why. PTSD and CPTSD trauma recovery absolutely sucks.

Anonymous

YAY! Weve made it through my least favorite MCU film... which is a shame, because i usually really enjoy Brie Larson's acting, and Carol Danvers used to be a fav character of mine. The writing was just off on this film in my opinion.

Niknok Seyer

Can't wait for Endgame, then Far From Home.

Eric Bogerd

I think you're spot on about there not being any real 'stakes' to what's happening. My problem with CM as a movie and as a character is that she is just super-overpowered. She's basically the Superman of the MCU, but without Kryptonite or Magic being a weakness. She has too much strength without any real glaring weakness, so you never really believe she could lose. In the end, she's more of a plot device than a character.

Anonymous

Best not to try to weave logic into a lot of these plot points....you can make sense of some of it but ultimately you’ll potentially go crazy.

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

I really agree that this film was more flawed than the rest of the MCU films. Cap Marvel never impressed me in the comics back in the day, either. They did elevate it above what it was, but they cut corners and like you say, the stakes were not very high. I still don't find much in Bree's acting that was lacking... i suspect mainly script then directing. Goose and Fury kind of dominated this fairly fun flick. (C8

Anonymous

It's not a bad movie, but its definitely a lower tier for me when we get amazing entries like Winter Soldier, Infinity War, and Civil War! I can't wait till you get to Endgame!

Thomas Yanez

Yeah, it was good. But, for me, it can't beat her reaction to a late story reveal in "The Silence of the Lambs".

Thomas Yanez

Or, you know, not. And stick with MCU material like "Wanda Vision", etc. instead.

Thomas Yanez

When it comes to self-confidence, it's kind of hard to compare any heroes to Green Lanterns... they kind of HAVE to be that way, as their strength is based on their willpower. They HAVE to believe in themselves or they fail.

Anonymous

Know that the scenes in Endgame with Captn Marvel were filmed BEFORE this movie. Knowing this will surely answer a lot of questions you would have on her appearance / actions in Endgame

Anonymous

The superhero character from “Shazam!” was the original Captain Marvel. His comics came out in the 40s and was Captain Marvel up to about ten years ago or so when they just decided to rename him Shazam since that’s what people thought his name was anyway. The funny thing is he’s a character owned by Marvel’s rival, DC Comics!

sheriffjt

DC actually purchased the rights to Shazam, it was originally an independent comic book. Captain Marvel is the most powerful hero up to this point, so the film wasn't really about defeating the villains, in my opinion. It was about overcoming the limits that the Kree had imposed on her and realizing her true power. That's why the end seemed low-stakes. The climax took place when she broke the inhibitor on her neck, everything after is the payoff. I feel like its too easy to dismiss this because it doesn't fit the "Rocky" formula of action films and while I agree it's more about establishing her character, I don't think it's fair to shoe-horn every character coming to terms with an identity crisis into a single reaction. That's not how people work and, while we may be used to characters working that way, maybe they shouldn't...

I am seeing a few spoilers in these comments! Not big ones, but still.

Darren Withers

Why is everyone referring to “Spider-Man: Far From Home” as an upcoming movie with a December 2021 release date? I could have sworn my copy wasn’t pirated! 🤷‍♂️

Holly R

I originally wasn't going to comment here when I watched the full reaction, but after watching the youtube edit of this I realized some things felt missing. Most of this was said, but this movie hits home for me pretty personally, so here goes... Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful heroes in the MCU. She is essentially the Superman of the universe (in that Superman is so powerful and so invulnerable). Because of this, there can sometimes be a problem with writing threats for the character (or just writing threats while the character is around). For this movie, the writers decided to counter Carol's sheer power with much more familiar attacks (well, familiar for some): Gaslighting. She was told that her power wasn't even hers. That she didn't have control over them. Heck, she wasn't even allowed to recognize her own potential. She was also repeatedly told to deny her emotions, to stamp them down, that they're a sign of weakness. She was told that she would not be considered good enough until she proved herself to a man. And that was all just from the Kree. Before that, it was a repeated chorus of "you don't belong here" "you can't do it" "you'll never be good enough" from every man in her life...her brothers, her father, her squadmates, her commander...even her government said that she wasn't allowed to fly combat missions because of her gender. So when she experiences self-realization in the conversation with the Supreme Intelligence at the end of the movie, that is the final battle. Everything else after (the fights, the aerial combat, the missiles, the destruction of the warships, etc) is just a victory lap. It's just her finally experiencing and feeling her own strength. I agree that much of this movie was a bit underwritten, resulting in certain scenes just not delivering the weight that they should, but seeing someone get past so much manipulation still gets me.

Welcome back Nat. Awesome reaction. Cant wait til Endgame. Heres a bit of trivia. Fawcett Comics published a comic featuring a hero called Captain Marvel in the 1940s who was really popular at the time, outselling even Superman. However, DC comics hit them with a copyright infringement suit in the 50s due to his similarities to Superman and eventually gained the character rights by the 70s. In the late 60s, Marvel comics released their own Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) and trademarked the name so by 1972, when re-introducing the character, DC rebranded their Captain Marvel under the title SHAZAM! but he was still referred to as Captain Marvel until the 2011 relaunch where he was officially named Shazam

I usually watch all Marvel movies several times on theaters and was so underwhelmed by Captain Marvel that only saw it once. When Disney+ launched I decided to rewatch it, and knowing the twist beforehand allowed me to focus on the subtle ways they lie to her, and was sobbing by the end of the movie. I still think the movie has a lot of wasted opportunities, but Brie Larson tranquil fury is amazing. I just hoped they allowed her to explode better with rage and joy at the right moments, as to show how her emotions were an important part of herself

A head's up, with Avengers: Endgame, although there really isn't a mid-credits scene or an after credits scene, there are some goodies. Part-way into the credits, they do what I like to call a victory lap for 11 years and 22 films of the MCU, by visually highlighting doing a montage of the principle cast. Just celebrating that this whole thing actually worked, and worked spectacularly. Then at the very end of the credits, there is a quiet but reflective sound heard, right around 3:00:55. And I'm not sure if it's worth doing the latter in the watch-along or just mentioning it later, but the former, the mid-credits victory lap, is great IMO.

It is so annoying when people say B's performance is weak and stoic but people forget that is exactly how Carol is in the comics. If you compare B's performance to the character in the comics it shows B's performance was actually nearly perfect. Seriously Carol is almost exactly like how B is here. As for the vulnerableness, again this a matter of both the comic depiction of the character as exceedingly powerful but also a studio decision from Kevin Fiege who said he wanted this movie to make it VERY VERY CLEAR that Captain Marvel is the strongest character so far introduced into the MCU so despite what all the 'B Haters' want to think most of the issues with this film were not caused by B's performance and her performance was accurate to the character shown in the comics. As to the sexuality question yes Carol Danvers Captain Marvel is Bisexual.

You stated that you don't know what you are going to do after Endgame. May I suggest reacting to Wandavision? It's one of my favorite series and sets up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie.

If Brie Larsen is unlikeable in the Captain Marvel movie because Captain Marvel is unlikeable in the comics, then why all the angst over people not liking her?

WandaVision is next, chronologically, then Falcon & the Winter Soldier, then Far From Home. No Way Home will probably pick up almost immediately after Far From Home for that matter.

Well Fawcett comics let the trademark lapse, and Marvel created their Captain Marvel taking it over before the situation could be rectified. That meant that DC, who had bought the rights to the character, could call him Captain Marvel inside the comic, but not put the name on the cover, always using some form of Shazam as a title. The popular misunderstanding that his name was Shazam was facilitated by every cover bearing that name. If every Superman title was some form of Flamebird (The Adventures of Flamebird, The Power of Flamebird, Flamebird: The New Beggining), but he was called Superman inside every issue and never Flamebird people would be puzzled and changing the title or the character name would be the simplest solutions to ease the confusion. In Shazam's case they couldn't legally change the title so they changed his name which made more sense than having a character with one name whose comics are identified by another name.

As much as I can't wait for her WandaVision reactions, she should watch Spider-Man Far From Home first. It's a cathartic follow-up to Endgame. THEN WandaVision and then FATWS (which was great, but not even close to being better than WandaVision). Also, Nat LOVES Wanda so much, so she's going to absolutely love WandaVision!

Then we can start talking about The Marvels (Brie Larson is working out like crazy for the role again - check out her IG)!

Far From Home happens the same time as WV...remember in the beginning they show people coming back from the snap

One important point about Captain Marvel's power level - she is certainly powerful, but it's only in her Binary form that she really goes Uber. Her primary ability is energy absorption and thus far all of her enemies have insisted on 'charging her up' at the beginning of her fights (like the Accuser ships did in this movie or in Endgame when Thanos ship unloads on her). If Thanos didn't have the gauntlet with the stones for her to siphon power from, he could literally have just beaten her down, as could the Hulk or Thor or a number of others...

Yeah so this movie's ending is pretty weak if you don't understand the comics and Captain Marvel's power level. The whole point is the biggest struggle for this character is emotional because she is so powerful that most things are not an actual threat to her, so the high point of this movie was meant to be her struggle in her head with the Supreme Intelligence not the fights after that. Basically as soon as she got full control of her abilities by taking off that inhibitor chip she had already won

Joseph C Gdaniec

Also i think you were confused on your timeline stuff, Captain America happened first, then Howard found the Tesseract and stored it with Shield. SHIELD then gives it to Pegasus to make engines in this movie and then it goes back to SHIELD in the end to then be used in Avengers 1

I love your reaction videos because you like me, are not a hardcore fan that knows everything about Marvel. Your much more relatable as a regular person watching and reacting. Hope this makes sense.
