Such a wonderful movie! Will be watching along tonight.

Randee Carreno

Downloading this right now to watch later this evening. 😊 This is such a beautifully heartwarming movie. And I'm so excited to watch this reaction tonight. Until the next video, Stay Golden! 💛

Andy Jordan

One of my all-time faves! Getting ready to cue up my copy with a cuppa tea. Thanks for everything as always, Nat.

Anonymous

Princess Bride, so excited to watch this!

Darryl Low

It's always a good day when Koda makes an appearance. This is a movie I had never seen, and like you said Nat, a simple story but told in a really fun way, with a good cast. Very much a typical 80s movie, quite a leisurely pace and with inventive effects. The prison guard in the pit of despair was played by the late, great Mel Smith, one part of the comedy duo Smith & Jones who were massive on tv in the UK in the 80s. Really enjoyed laughing along with you to this one. Thanks for a great week of videos. Have a good weekend Nat 💛

Ian

Thankyou Nat 🙂 save it for weekend or watch it later choices choices 🤔 have yourself a lovely weekend Nat 💛

One of my favorite 3 movies ever made! I honestly have no idea how many times I've seen in, but will happily watch it again.

Anonymous

"This kid is savage." The actor playing the kid is Fred Savage.

Thomas Yanez

I'm confused, which MCU phase is this?

JediLounger

So when you posted this poll, I was unaware that your time watching Princess Bride was watching random bits in a classroom haha. Of course this is what we should be watching, it sounds like you had a great math teacher lol.

Jomero

Excellent choice. It's been a favorite of mine for a very, very long time. If you ever want to watch a movie that is essentially a spiritual successor to this one, watch Stardust (if you haven't already). Some little factoids about the movie: Bill Goldman was trying to come up with a new idea for a book so he asked his two young daughters. One said they wanted a story about a princess. The other said she wanted a story about a bride. So..... he combined them and this movie was based off of it. Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits fame) was asked to score the movie. He only agreed to do it if Rob Reiner included the ballcap he wore in "This Is Spinal Tap" somewhere in the movie (it's hanging in Fred Savage's room). Also, your assumption about him being in a mask so they could sub in a fencing expert is incorrect! The two actors worked on that choreography very hard and for a very long time. The only time a stunt double was used was during things like gymnast flip. The person who trained them (Bob Anderson) is an expert swordsman who also trained many others in famous movies. In fact, he was in the Darth Vader costume during the end-duel in Empire Strikes Back.

"keep your shirt on" is a phrase. It means stay calm.

My_Cousin_Mose

The old school pokemon games are so high quality and innovative and really stand the test of time.

SplinterTME

Exactly. The possible origin of the idiom may have to do with fighting. Shirts can restrict a person’s movement to an extent, especially if it’s a tighter fitting one. By removing the shirt, it allows the upper body to move around a bit more freely. So someone who is angry and wants to fight might remove their shirt, so telling them to "Keep your shirt on" means calm down, no need to fight.

Opti_Frog

Stardust. I'd really like a reaction to Stardust now.

Calo Grsf

Thank you for this reaction! It's clearly not my kind of movie but with you it's a different story haha, you are so expressive and communicative, that I feel like I'm eating a pizza 😆 I love Koda, a real diva with his cute face, a real dyre wolf! 😆 As always, Stay Golden and Be Safe! 💛

Ortizmo2000

JOKER FOXTROT CHARLIE!! How did I not catch that before???? LOLOL!!! You gotta be kiddin' me!!!! I was 18 when I saw that and I'm 51 today. LOLOL!!! Had no idea.

VidKris

I really do hope you watch the Hobbit trilogy (Extended edition!) sometime! 1💍🧙🏻‍♂️🧝🏻‍♂️🏹🗡🛡😊✨❤️

Graht1

"This kid is savage." Yep, Fred Savage :D

Patrick W

You really need to watch Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Thomas Yanez

As much as I love Mel Brooks, for some reason, I was never able to really get into RH:MiT.

Ron K

Right there with you. Love Mel Brooks, love everyone in that movie. But just didn't hit for me.

ISeeTrees ofGreen

oh if you havent already, you should def watch Monty Python and the holy grail!

Ian Forbes

Beat me to the info on the fencing! 😀. Nat, I would recommend you read “As You Wish” which was co-written by Cary Elwes and talks about his experiences making the film, including a good chunk about the fencing training and his time with the late, great Andre the Giant.

Emily Smith

Both actors learned fencing and did all their own dualing! They both even learned to fight with BOTH hands!

Ben Wheeler

A fun break is good—your viewing has been pretty heavy of late between GoT, Saving Private Ryan, and 300 haha

Anonymous

You look so adorable with pigtails, Nat

Anonymous

I wish you had stayed filming, don't know if you recognized all the younger heavyweights in the movie- Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, guy who played Columbo... Also, if you get the chance go to the west coast of Ireland, near Galway. The "Cliffs of Insanity" are the Cliffs of Moher where they filmed. Breathtaking. If you have time to wander, check out The Burren, there's a farm there where they're awfully proud of their American cousin Gregory Peck. And I think the castle sets were Haddon Hall in England.

Baron

I did some digging to answer your question at the end of the movie plus some context, Princess Bride budget was 16 million dollars and it made 30 million at the box office. Compared to a movie like Beverly Hills Cop 2 from the same year that had a budget of 27 million and grossed 276.5 million at the box office. I hope that helps with your question. Edit: I realize that these two movie don't have the same audience at all it was just a big budget movie from the same year for comparison. Edit Plus: Thanks for the awesome reaction it was fun.

Andrew T

It was awesome seeing Robin Wright play Antiope in Wonder Woman (2017). Antiope is such a stark contrast from the "damsel in distress" Princess Buttercup character.

Matthew Periolat

Well, speaking for myself, I had fun storming the castle. This is such a quotable movie, it’s nuts. And the characters and story are so fun. This is another of those movies you wonder how people get through without watching. Maybe because those who have seen it just assume everyone else has and don’t share. Regardless, great treat, great joy and hope for more to come. Still Golden.

Chaz Mannington

The budget for this film was 16 million dollars, or 26.57 million in 2021 dollars.

Anonymous

“This kid is savage!” Well yeah, he’s Fred Savage!

Sir_Dalagad

Natalie: "This kid is savage!" The kid played by Fred Savage: ;-)

Joel Palenychka

Mandy Patinkin had lost is father to cancer shortly before working on this film. He has stated in interviews that he channeled his feelings for the loss of his father into Inigo's thirst for revenge. He said ti was very cathartic to "kill" his father's "murderer" and it lent enough intensity to his performance that Christopher Guest (count Rugen) felt genuine fear at the end of their duel.

Sir_Dalagad

Yeah, they were sword fighting all over the set during downtime. So awesome! They must have had so much fun making this.

Anonymous

My sister and I never agreed on anything. We fought like cats and dogs. But one thing we never argued about was The Princess Bride. It’s the first thing she and I really bonded over.

Sir_Dalagad

When asked what his favorite thing about making this film was, André the Giant replied, without skipping a beat, "Nobody looks at me." He meant nobody stared at him and they made him feel comfortable

Anonymous

Damn, I had said that SAME EXACT THING just a few minutes ago 😜

Greg McDaniel

Natalie, if you like 80's high fantasy films, you need to watch "Willow" with Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer.

Ron K

Nat I loved how your telling Fred Savage's character to be patient and just wait till the end of the story when in most reaction videos you're saying things like "Guys what's happening?! Where are they going?! Guys what does that mean?! Who is that guy?!" 😂 Great reaction to a great movie!

Ortizmo2000

"Keep your shirt on"? Is that a saying? Yes, once a upon a time it was. Warner Bros, cartoons of the 1940's for instance.

Darren Withers

10:18 Nat: "This kid is savage" Me: "Well, yes. It's Fred Savage. Your point?" Edit: Ok, I didn't even wait for the film to end, posted this instantly, and still not the first by a good couple of hours! On consideration, I've a feeling that Nat said that intentionally.

Misty Crom

Had to chuckle when you said "This kid is savage!" Why yes, yes he is. Fred Savage. Also, as said by others, both principal actors did all of the fencing The only bits of that their doubles got to do were the gymnastics bits like the spin on the bar. They HAD fencing doubles, but Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin were both better by the time of shooting. The same sword coach trained Antonio Banderas for the Zorro movies, and he too did all his own sword-work. Miracle Max btw was played by Billy Crystal. And the "Impressive clergyman" is comedy legend Peter Cook. On top of that, the actor who plays Vizzini is the voice of Rex in Toy Story (which, as soon as you know is really, really obvious).

Chris Gronau

A great reaction to an all-time great movie. Thanks for making my day. 😎

Ortizmo2000

"Oh look. Upstate NY in the fall!" LOL!!!!

BJ Stephens

Considering this film is set sometime in the past (medieval/renaissanc) Europe-ish place, then as a commoner, Buttercup couldn't just say no I won't marry you. As a commoner you were pretty much at the mercy of the nobility.

Anonymous

Every time you mentioned clown comedy I’m like, “YES” (because I’m a clown for real). Even though he was massively huge, Andre the Giant was physically weak from all the injuries he sustained in his wrestling career. He couldn’t even pick up Robin Wright let alone all three of them! And because he couldn’t walk that far he rode an ATV everywhere. He encouraged Cary Elwes to take it for a spin and having never ridden one before, Elwes wound up breaking his foot! You can see in some scenes, especially when he’s telling Buttercup about Westley (before he reveals himself) he’s limping. When Andre the Giant died six years later, they found a copy of The Princess Bride in his VCR. It was supposedly his most favorite thing he had ever done.

Texas Anla'Shok

This has got be one of, if not the most quotable movies ever. I don’t know if Mandy Patinkin fences, but he does sing. He was Che in Evita.

Danny Miller

I’m glad that this movie won the poll and not ‘The Hobbit’, but ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ would have been a good choice. ‘The Hobbit’ movies were terribly disappointing. Peter Jackson just split the book into 3 movies to try and make money off of the fans of ‘The Lord of the Rings’, and failed quite spectacularly.

LordGrailKnight

YES! I love this movie, it was one of my top 10 when I was little, My best friend and I watched if for the first time when we were 7 years old on a tiny 10 or 12 inch tube TV when I was staying with him for a night. We loved it so much we pretended to be in the land of Florin for the rest of night and the rest of the weekend we spent together, having adventures in the woods and fighting evil princess, ROUSes and pretending to sword fight. It's nice to remember a simpler and fun time in my life. It was also the movie that made my friend and I realize for the first time that we actually really liked girls, and wanted to kiss one one day. Strange thing for 2 boys to discover, but yeah.

Rusty Childers

Jill Bearup's YouTube channel does a great bit about the long sword fight at the Cliffs of Insanity and how they just decided to have fun with it.

Anonymous

"Keep your shirt on" is a phrase I've known my whole life. I'm genuinely curious how one would go through life without hearing it somewhere.

Anonymous

Three movies this made me think of reaction suggestions. First, This is Spinal Tap, then Misery, and of course A Fish Called Wanda. Really is one of my favorite movies that has shaped my humor and enjoyment of fanciful fantasy. Watched it so many times with my mom.

Andrew Uhl

I also watched this in 8th grade class, well study hall. But the teacher who put it on taught social studies / civics / history. He would also play The Wonder Years as well.

Holly R

There are a few comments suggesting Stardust if you want a similar film to this, and I would happily echo that recommendation. Oh, and also the one for Willow. so, yeah, when you want another feel-good fantasy film, Stardust.....or Willow. :)

Robert Avila

It always makes me happy seeing you react to a movie I liked, and even more when it's a movie I grew up with. I love this movie so much because of so many ways it hits perfectly, like with humor and emotion (like you said, cheesy at times, but I grew up in the 80's so I love it). Also love seeing the puppy, even if only briefly. 🐶😍💖

A Vicarious View

I grew up always hearing "Keep your shirt on." It's basically saying "Calm down. We're not about to fight about it." When fighting, an opponent can grab your shirt to control your movement or pull it over your head to stifle or blind you. They may also not want it to get damaged or bloody if it's one of their favorite shirts. You usually see it as a cliche in action movies where the meat-head takes off his shirt to confront someone. It's a "shit just got real" moment. The shirt came Off! It's also a great way to show off the hero's abs. lol. I'm lookin at you Jean Claude Van Damme.

A Vicarious View

It's budget was $16 Million in 1987 which translates to $37.7 Million today. It doesn't seem like much compared to blockbuster budgets today but it was a substantial budget back then. Lethal Weapon and Fatal Attraction were made the same year for a little less and Beverly Hills Cop 2 was a major blockbuster that year and was made for $27 Million.

Troy B.

It's funny, I had never really questioned anything about this movie until Natalie pointed them out! But yeah, Princess Buttercup was the ultimate 'damsel in distress' trope, but then so are most of the characters. Miracle Max was probably one of the few subversions. (That and the whole "Humperdink lives.")

Mike H

So much fun to rewatch this with you Natalie! Can't believe you didn't recognize Billy Crystal as Miracle Max :)

Joe Blankenship

“This kid is savage.” LOL!

Donovan Sparks

It was so fun watching this with you. This really is one of my all time favorite movies. It was awesome watching you lip sync to some famous lines in the movie as well. But my favorite part of this reaction was when Inigo Montoya and Count Rugen were fighting and you were getting more and more of an angry face while Inigo started coming back in the fight. haha Love the movie and loved your reactions. Thank you!

Anonymous

This film had my favorite ever behind the scenes fact. André "The Giant" Roussimoff had giantism and was over 7 feet tall and had a career as a wrestler before he started acting but he was treated more like a spectacle than a performer (I think his first acting job was as a sasquatch and he played a monster in a Conan movie) but when he filmed The Princess Bride the cast and crew treated him like just another actor and it was one of the only times in his life that he felt included. André was so proud of this movie and his performance (justifiably I would say) that he made all his friends watch it over and over any time they came to visit him.

Anonymous

The mom was definitely rocking a mullet lol

Adam Slagle

Cary Elwes wrote a book (it's an audiobook too) about the making of the movie, and it's almost as magical as the movie itself. It's called "As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride". The mask he wore was just for the reveal - Cary and Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) practiced with 2 fencing masters every spare moment until the fight scene (which was filmed last).

Obsolyeet

If you had grown up in the midwest, you would have definitely heard "keep your shirt on" before when someone is getting worked up. I've heard that since I was a kid.

Anonymous

In some ways it felt like a love letter to Andre the Giant. The affectionate way he wrote about him. It warmed my heart,

PUPPY!!!!!

This_Jedi_crafts

So much fun seeing this again and watching Natalie's comments/ surprise/ joy!

Lisa Tosti

Nat: "This boy is SAVAGE!" Me: "Fred" hahaha!

Aric Heintzelman

I forgot how much I liked this. Rob Reiner is tragically overlooked as a comedic director. Everyone knows his movies but few can name their director. “Throw Momma From the Train” is an underrated classic, but I think his crowning achievement has to be “This is Spinal Tap”, arguably the greatest rock and roll documentary put to film. On a scale of one to ten, it’s an eleven.

Ian

Had no clue going into this movie but i was pleasantly surprised how much fun it was 🙂 surprised you've never heard the expression keep your shirt on! It's basically the same as hold your horses! That u might have heard of 👍

Kevin Townsend

Another Rob Reiner directed movie to watch is A Few Good Men if you haven’t already seen it.

Ken - Kendo161

Koda looking into camera, this is what you do all day? lol

Ortizmo2000

Don't think I've seen a bad Reiner film yet. This one, Spinal Tap, Misery, and When Harry Met Sally are his best IMHO.

Luis Torrefranca

So happy you finally got to see past 40 minutes of this movie! Big time favorite of mine, especially the Miracle Max part.

Oouga

When I was a kid, my mom always knew if I was sick. One day I came down for school, sick as anything, and my mom took one look at me and ordered me into bed. I never knew how she knew I was sick since I didn't say I was. Many years later I found out it was because I was wearing brown and red, two colors I never wore (brown and purple look identical to me, I'm shade blind).

Oouga

I love how Vincini guessed correctly. He even said it. He cannot trust the wine in front of either of them he drank anyway,

Oouga

Cary Elwes (Westley), Robin Wright (Buttercup), Mandy Patinkin (Inygo Montoya), Andre the Giant (Fezzik), Billy Crystal (Miracle Max), Carol Cane (Max's Wife Valerie)

I own this movie; haven't watched it in like, 20 years...so thanks for giving me a reason to. Forgot how much I enjoyed it; chuckled, cried a little - all the real emotions and stuff. I'm subscribed to maybe 20 reactioners on YouTube, but Natalie is the first one whom I made the jump to Patreon to see (mainly for Civil War - my favorite Marvel movie, and I have since been following her full-length GoT videos), she's just so delightful and adorable to watch, and I love all the times she screams, cusses or the times she rounds out her sentences in song. Been following her on YouTube for maybe a year now; glad I joined on Patreon finally. And glad she gave me a reason to revisit the Princess Bride <3

Anonymous

I like the fan theory that when the Grandpa says "as you wish" at the end, he's hinting that him and his grandson are the decendants of Buttercup and Wesley <3

Anonymous

Definitely one of my favorite movies. I got my nieces and nephew hook on it:)

Thundarr100

Actually Andre's weakness was from his untreated gigantism. He had grown so large that his knees and spine couldn't support his massive weight anymore, which at this point in his life was well over 500 lbs. Certain parts of his fight with Dread Pirate Roberts had to be shot with stunt doubles from far away (specifically the parts where DPR was riding on his back while choking him). For the close up scenes, Andre was straddling a beam or ramp which Carey Elwes was standing on, and they only shot those scenes from the waist up. And then with some clever editing the two sets of footage were blended together to make it seem that it was always Carey & Andre.

Kenny Teeology

The sucking one year of Wesley's life scene has become a meme shown twice a year for daylight savings time, replacing the line as sucking one hour of your life away.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Love this movie, watching on Disney Plus, which also has WILLOW, would love to see that reaction!

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

That was a fun rewatch for me, this was a movie that understood what it was, a one off masterpiece. The best are.

dieselbeast

I enjoyed watching this with you, you are my favorite reactor 😊 I'm sure you have a long list of movies that ppl have suggested, but maybe sometime in the near future if you haven't watched these yet, if you like the gangster genre, would love for you to react to Scarface, the godfather and goodfellas 😊
