Hey guys!

For BHM I decided to watch this movie per some of your suggestions. I was particularly curious about Jackie Robinson's story as well as getting to watch some of Chadwick Boseman's work. Thanks so much to everyone who suggested this and many other films. I hope you enjoy this one, if you're able to watch it with me. I rented it on Amazon Prime for those who'd like to know the version I'm watching.

As always, please let me know your thoughts in the comments and until the next one, ✨stay golden!✨

What a great film Nat. Another I'd not seen, so it was great to watch it with you this evening. Really great performances all round. Chadwick Boseman was a rare talent, and great to see Harrison Ford giving it his all too. And I don't think you recognised "Kevin" from Moonlight as Jackie's sports writer friend Wendell. The film did a great job at showing how Jackie's teammates changed and stood up for him, but in the end, all he wanted was to be part of a team and play baseball. A real triumph over adversity. Thanks for sharing another great movie with us Nat, and I'd love to see more movies like this on your channel💛

I thought it was going to be Age of Ultron already?

Andy Jordan

A wonderful film; if you’re interested, Chadwick Boseman also played James Brown in “Get on Up” and Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall”, so he played three titans of culture. Also, his last film was “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, which is on Netflix, a great adaptation of August Wilson’s play in his Pittsburgh Cycle, and I highly recommend all of those, if you’re interested. Looking forward to this one! Cheers, Nat!

one of the best baseball movies and I'd say one of the best all time sports movies.

Thank you Nat for the surprise! I still hadn't seen this movie, which was on my personal list haha Have a nice day and Stay Golden!

I actually just watched this movie last night on tv. LOL! This is one of my favorite Chadwick Boseman movies. And if you want to watch another great Chadwick Boseman film, I highly recommend "Get on Up" where he portrays singer James Brown. I've got my copy of your reaction downloaded, and I'm going to watch it this evening with my copy of the movie. I'm really looking forward to watching it. 😊 Until the next video, Stay Golden! 💛

Hey Nat. Nice surprise. This has been on my watch list but I also have yet to watch it, but you just gave me a push. OT: you might want to consider encoding your videos using the h265 codec. They do take a bit more processing power to encode/decode but you will save a lot of space and upload/download time for your patrons. You can set your computer to encode your videos while you are asleep or otherwise occupied. I have cut 45min clips encoded in h264 that come in ~2gb and after re-encoding to h265, the size is ~700mb . I have encoded some videos that come in around a tenth of the size of the original. Some may not agree but it is a huge space saver all while retaining the same video quality. Handbrake can do the job and it is a free download. Just food for thought. Have a good one.

All of the on field scenes were filmed at Engel Stadium in Chattanooga Tennessee (where I grew up) because it was one of the few remaining from that time. They put up giant green screens on the outfield wall so they could make it look like different cities.

This was a great movie to watch!! The Dodgers started in Brooklyn from 1884 until 1957. The name Dodgers is a nickname they got while in Brooklyn, people in Brooklyn used to be called Trolley Dodgers. Overall this movie is fairly true to the story but to be honest there is so much more to the story. If you get a chance and you enjoy this type of history I would advise trying to find a documentation called "Ghosts of Flatbush" .

Great reaction, Nat, as always! I agree, the scene in the dugout tunnel is so powerful. It had me in puddles of tears the first time I saw it. One of my favorite single scenes in a film in the last 10 years or so. Good job recognizing Alan Tudyk. It took me a second too the first time. Also, if you didn't recognize him, André Holland, the grown-up Kevin in "Moonlight", played Wendell Smith, the reporter. Also, the incident of Pee Wee Reese putting his arm around Jackie really happened. Jackie said: "After Pee Wee came over like that, I never felt alone on a baseball field," and Reese became his best friend on the team. What a nice surprise this was. Cheers, Nat!

Thanks! I already use Handbrake to compress my videos actually (they’re usually incredibly massive, like 20-30 GB for a movie) so Handbrake does a good job of minimizing the file. But I will look into the h265 codec in case Handbrake doesn’t have that set

Great reaction as always. I'm glad that my Amazon rental gives me 48 hours to watch because I may watch this one again tomorrow!

Pennants are League Championships. Winners of the National League and American League are pennant winners (literally used to raise championship flags or pennants above the ball yards to make the wins) and will face each other in the World Series. I wish I could teach and share all I know and love about baseball, players and stats, teams and history, achievements and stories. But the truth is baseball is something you can watch or you can love. Neither can be taught, you have to decide for yourself what baseball will mean to you. I will share this though from the Ken Burns documentary Baseball. Perhaps it can convey better what I mean: It is played everywhere: in parks and playgrounds, prison yards, in back alleys and farmers’ fields; by small boys and old men, raw amateurs and millionaire professionals. It is a leisurely game that demands blinding speed; the only game in which the defense has the ball. It follows the seasons, beginning each year with the fond expectancy of springtime and ending with the hard facts of autumn. Americans have played baseball for over two hundred years; while they conquered a continent, warred with each other and enemies abroad, struggled over labor and civil rights, and with the meaning of freedom. At its heart lie mythic contradictions: a pastoral game born in crowded cities, an exhilarating democratic sport that tolerates cheating, and has excluded as many as it has included. A profoundly conservative game that often manages to be years ahead of its time. It is an American Odyssey that links sons and daughters to fathers and grandfathers, and it reflects a host of age-old American tensions; between workers and owners, scandal and reform, the individual and the collective. It is a haunted game in which every player is measured with the ghosts of those have gone before. Most of all, it is about time and timelessness, speed and grace, failure and loss, imperishable hope... and coming home.

I was waiting for you to see Alan Tudyk. 😊 That was a rough part for him and he played it totally Method. Chadwick never met the real Alan until after the film wrapped. As a Dodger fan who was born and raised in Alabama, I have always loved “42.” I was raised to be racist but it didn’t “take.” I was part of the first generation of white Alabama kids to never have attended segregated schools. My best friend in grade school was black. I also became a Dodger fan around that time. Everyone else in my city was a Braves fan. But I loved watching Garvey/Lopes/Cey play on TV. Decades later, when I went to see my first Dodgers game in Atlanta, I had a fantastic experience. The majority of the Braves hospitality staff are black. As I entered the gate, one of the greeters spotted my Dodgers cap and jokingly said, “You know we gonna whip y’all today, don’t you?” We both chuckled. Then she gently pulled me toward her and whispered in my ear, “Actually, I love the Dodgers because they hired Jackie Robinson. They’ll always be good in my book. I hope y’all win!” I smiled and nodded to her and we winked at each other as I merged back into the crowd. I will never forget how awesome that felt!

warcrimes

as a sports fan this was a disappointing movie

warcrimes

I only mentioned sports as it's a monumental moment in sports, and society, obviously. I still didn't like it much.

It Hurt A Lot

As a fellow sports fan, it was no Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch, but I liked it

The easiest way to learn baseball, I think, is to play it. It’s easy to pick up as you go along because it’s not as fast paced as other sports. I like that you recognized Dr. Cox from Scrubs. I love seeing him show up in movies. Also, your hair looked really nice in this one. I think that length looks really good on you. K, bye. I’m gonna go stay golden.

Natalie, if you want to see a great Chadwick Boseman movie, watch his portrayal of James Brown if "Get On Up." He channels James Brown. The music is great too.

I know I’m a little late to the party, but this was such a great reaction! If you’re interested in more baseball movies, I would highly recommend The Natural.

RebRox65

I really enjoyed this Reaction, I’ve not seen this movie, but I will be putting on my list, and now I’d really like to recommend another baseball movie if you haven’t seen it A League of their own the true life story of the all women baseball team who kept the league’s going while the men went to war. It also has a lot of animosity from the men about women playing a man’s game. It’s a great movie with an all-star cast, and even Madonna good in this movie too🤣 if you do watch make sure you watch the end it has some amazing footage of the real teams

I'm late to comment on this as I just joined the Patreon, but I treasured that reaction so much! This movie moved me to tears multiple times throughout. America was a shameful place but I'm very happy with our progress. I'm not a huge baseball guy, but I enjoyed this movie at another level. Chadwick Boseman played the role flawlessly and I'll never be able to watch another man play as Jackie Robinson in the future. Your reaction to this was great! Now, you weren't nearly as moved as I was during a good bit of the film but I could totally tell that you were more analyzing than experiencing the film. Felt as though you were watching the film as though you were reviewing it than reacting - but that may just be because I'm more emotional than you are when it comes to this type of struggle/problem. Very happy that you reacted to this! :D Made me feel very happy watching this alongside you. :)
