Alan Tudyk? Time to watch more Disney/Pixar animation (:

Best alert ever!

Andy Crawley

Yes! Cannot wait to see your reaction to this. I knew there was a good reason I took the day off work!

Ronny Boss

Oh this is gonna be good, can't wait to get off work now so I can watch

Im excited but at the same time!!! NOOOO!!! :(

Randee Carreno

Yes! I've been looking forward to watching this ever since I finished watching the "Firefly" series. 😊 I'll definitely be watching this during the afternoon. Stay Golden! 💛

Aaron Taft

Looks like it's Quiting time at my Job. I'll be home in 20 minutes

Andy Crawley

Regarding your spoiler, think I know exactly where you saw that, because as soon as I read it too I thought dude why would you post that? You know she hasn’t seen it yet! Oh well. To paraphrase Michael Caine, “Some men just want to watch Nat’s world burn.”

Joe Jeffords

We'll never know if Firefly would have had a greater impact on its fans had it been allowed to continue. Perhaps its limited run is what has held its value over the years. The twin turbines of "What Is" and "What Could Have Been" will continue to fuel our gratitude for what was given and have us always longing for more. Thank you for the opportunity to have relived this series through your fresh perspective.

Andy Jordan

So glad you got to make it all the way through to Serenity. Congratulations on becoming a member of the Browncoat Army! Getting ready to cue up my copy right now. Also, in case you didn't notice, Alan Tudyk did the voice and motion-capture for K-2SO in Rogue One, so a little tie-in there. Cheers, Nat!

Andrew T

Yup. I think I know where the spoiler appeared as well. The sad thing is, the spoiler was in a thread for a different movie.

Andrew Zachman

Im a leaf on the wind, see how I .......

Omni Jacala

So disappointed in whoever spoiled whatever it is that got spoiled. For shame. But hope you enjoy the experience nonetheless. =P

Anonymous

Yup, time to dig out the blu-ray. Even though I wish it had a little longer run, I’m glad it ended up how it did. Other than a few plot threads in the series, it really was a tight story. Plus the villain in the movie is right up there with ledger’s joker and Montalbán’s Kahn ( I mean in TOS he’s terrifying while in sparkle glitter underwear).

Anonymous

I saw this in the theatre with my wife, and as soon as that harpoon came through, my wife screamed out: “JOSS WHEDON, YOU BASTARD!!”

Matthew Periolat

Eeeee!!! After work, after work. Only six hours away. Six. Long. Hours.

Anonymous

Now that you've seen Serenity, you need to watch this video. (As recommended by Nathan Fillion his gorram self!) https://youtu.be/x-yHSaP0Dyg

Andrew T

Natalie, when you pointed out that the reintroduction of the characters was cute, it made me think, that reintroduction had to serve a secondary purpose and that's to introduce the characters for the first time to people who haven't seen Firefly. I think I even remember a comment here from someone who said they watched Serenity before they even knew of Firefly, but it was a great movie nonetheless.

Aaron Lovik

Now that you've seen the movie, be happy knowing that the story goes on. There are comics and novels with the Joss Whedon stamp of approval as canon. Including one titled "The Shepherd's Tale"! Enjoy!

Graht1

If only you had been wearing Jane's hat while watching this ;)

RebRox65

Natalie I'm glad you're finally finished this amazing series, I was worried for you knowing how invested you get and how you kept say that Wash was one of your favourite characters, I want to know if you now have of respect and understanding of River? For River was my favourite character for sure. Glad you survived and may I suggest a second viewing sometime in the future,

Anonymous

And releasing it on my birthday! Happy birthday to me eh? Saving this for tonight. Thanks Nat - looking forward to it!

Anonymous

Wow less than an hour and it won’t let me watch

Luis Torrefranca

Oh, note about Summer Glau - also a trained ballet dancer.

Dave A

I think seeing your strong emotional reaction to this one really goes to show why Serenity won in a landslide over Iron Man 3. Iron Man is a fine movie, but your reaction to it won't be anything compared to this reaction.

Joel S

I'll have to watch when I get off work. But I assume there will lots of screaming.

TrackHoodie

Natalie if you see this comment, I highly recommend you watch this movie analysis of serenity and firefly as a whole. It feels me with joy and breaks my heart at the same time. The content creator attended an advanced screening and the stories he has. Oh my God https://youtu.be/mHo78pqvgFs

Robert Kelly

The behind the scenes is interesting to watch. Summer was a joy for the stunt coordination because of her dance training. It was hard to watch some of my favorites die. It was after this movie that a friend of mine always says to me that I am Mal because of the scenes at the very end. Somber affirmation, good speech and then "What was that?" Good show and great story. Last funeral I was at I had to give a speech and I said to end it: "When I can't run no more I will walk, When I can't walk no more I will crawl, when I can't crawl anymore at least I got my friends to carry me home." Only my close friends that are fans of the show know where that comes from.

Anonymous

Finally got to Serenity. To quote Doctor Who: "I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry."

Luis Torrefranca

Mal on the ship: eh... as long as he's strapped in, he'll experience no greater acceleration than anyone on the bridge.

Patrick Armbruster

It's such a hard re-watch, but I always love it nonetheless. "My turn" is worth it. And Kaylee's "I'm gonna live!", too. And River letting Mal say his lines at the end and her putting her knees up to feel so small again... Just perfect.

Anonymous

And this all you golden-folks is how to wrap up a story that was cut tragically short. Its been a ride watching all the characters grow on you since watching the pilot and if it makes anyone feel better, I'm still not over THAT moment 15 years after seeing it for the first time

Bubba Fett

How do reavers clean their spears? Put the through the Wash!

Baron

Thank you for the great video, just finished watching it for the first time, I know, have to set limits so only twice today. A really great video all around, sorry someone spoiled it for you but maybe they had not bad intentions. I have so many thoughts about your reactions but just wanted to say in the comments that I thought the video was really good, it was interesting for me to see what caught your eye the first time vs what caught my attention. Thanks for the amazing video.

Luis Torrefranca

Re: being able to cohabitate They serve a common purpose and goal. They know enough to work together toward that.

Andy Jordan

What a lovely reaction, Nat. I don't think I've seen you so emotionally affected by a film since Gladiator, or maybe even LOTR. I was tearing up right along with you. And I can already see your next hoodie/shirt: we have "Stay Golden", now how 'bout "Let people suck"? That was hilarious, almost spit out my tea. :-) I'm not sure if you're much into comic books/graphic novels, but there are several graphic novel miniseries that continue the story, most of them from Dark Horse Comics, the first called Those Left Behind, which came out in 2005, and Boom! now publishes a run that's still going, I think - just in case you want to live with these characters a little more. Looking forward to Iron Man 3, and the beginning of Phase 2 of the MCU.

Tay Schumaker

Video is down/not working

Darryl Low

Not much to say Nat, other than Wow!. Probably your best reaction yet. Entertaining, powerful and emotional. Thank you.

It Hurt A Lot

It's in the Rogue One comments. We tried to get it deleted but what else can you do

Luis Torrefranca

Reaction to the reaction: *tears tears tears* "Zoë, you radient goddess! huuuuuuhhhh" *laughter* ... *tears*

Vincent Valentin

I personally think it would have gotten better. The later seasons of Buffy Angel and Dollhouse are imo better than their first seasons. Joss's thing is generally characters first then story while laying easter eggs for future plot lines. I would have been very interested to see what the character development would have been like for certain characters given a longer span of time. Than being said there are people who prefer the earlier seasons of those shows and hate decisions that are made. The longer a show lasts the more chance there is to do something people don't like.

Anonymous

Great reaction Nat. My thought after watching this movie is that the Operative is what Book was before becoming a shepherd. Would explain why Book knew so much and had Alliance credentials still. I assume the Operative walking away from the Alliance at the end must be the same thing Book did at some point. At least that’s my thought.

Andy Crawley

Just got through your reaction. So, this is probably my 25th time seeing Serenity. Saw it first in the cinema back in ‘05, and then here in the UK the channel ITV basically had it on what you guys would call syndication for years. So every few weeks it would be on ITV or ITV2, and it became kind of comfort food, to watch when nothing else was on or just to have in the background. Anyways, having seen it so many times, your reaction to your *spoiler* still completely got me! It’s such a shame Firefly was cancelled, as I think it could’ve definitely run for a good 3-4 seasons, but the fact they got to essentially close out the story with this film makes it a little less sad.

Anonymous

Natalie watching Inara in the background: “What’s she pulling out, what’s the stick?....oh I guess it’s incense.” Wait for it..... Inara 6 minutes later in my favorite line delivery of all time: “and that’s not incense.” Natalie: *shocked silence* “....I love her.” We all do darling, we all do

Paul C

That was just a good movie all around. If you want more of Alan Tudyk movies, there's: Dodgeball I, Robot - where he voices another robot. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (though you can skip Transformers franchise... trust me) Still would like you to consider Equilibrium. Or Dredd (maybe a bit violent for your taste).

It Hurt A Lot

I REALLY want to see you watch "Chernobyl" if you have not already seen it. I think it will really move you!

My favorite thing about the lighting in this movie is that as Mal progresses through the story the lighting around him goes from him being in the shadows often at the start to being fully illuminated in light in his final speech. Also as has been said Summer Glau is a trained ballet dancer and the fight scenes she did herself and a lot of the choreography was done specifically with her abilities in mind.

Anonymous

Now you that have finally gone through the whole experience you should watch the Special Features from the DVDs. If the link works... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wphXl_j-rFI Probably don't need to react to it but you should watch it either way. You can feel the love they had for the series they were a part of. Very bitter sweet.

Anonymous

Just FYI: Us browncoats always say that it's "always too soon" when taking about the end. It'll stick with you and you'll never be okay. Also... WATCH ALL THE GAG REELS! 😊😊😊😊

Sean Ellingham

Not just trained - she had a career as a ballerina before becoming an actress (indeed, that's why Joss hired her). That career is also the reason she spends so much time in Firefly/Serenity barefoot - she has arthritis in her toes from doing ballet, and it was more comfortable for her to be barefoot

Kevin Cleary

There is more literature out there on the story after the show/movie. There is particularly a book on Shepherd Book and his origins that is great to pick up. Not to mention that Disney+ just picked up the show and there will be more Firefly in the next few years!

Anonymous

I watched this movie without knowing the Firefly series. A friend gave me the entire series and I binged over a weekend which lead to understanding the movie. I loved your reaction to this, even though I've seen Serenity a bunch of times I still get emotional about Wash.

Tranquil_Gnome

That talk Mal had near the end just after talking with the Alliance Agent in the rain. The person in the cargo bay. Mal seemed like he was talking about the ship. He was not. Watch it again and you will know. In the commentaries on the DVD, Nathan Fillion said It took him a bit to understand that scene.

Anonymous

Weird, I'm getting an error saying too many people have downloaded/watched it

Tranquil_Gnome

PS Fantastic casting of Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Agent. He is brilliant in all his movies. Check him out in Kinky Boots (2005). And you'll see him again when you get to the Marvel movie Doctor Strange. RIP Ron Glass aka Shepherd Book (1945-2016)

Ethan Plumer

I like the idea that what they're really after is fear. Maybe hurting other reavers doesn't attract them since they can't inflict them with fear. Or perhaps it's some fancy science magic that involves pheromones released by other reavers. Extended exposure to such pheromones might even explain the reaver convert in Bushwhacked. I doubt if even Whedon had it all worked out.

Ethan Plumer

I like this idea better than what they did in the comic book "The Shepherd's Tale." It works better with the Niska knowledge but we'd need a reason his ident card still carries such weight.

Cole Jennett

New to Patreon, so this was my first time watching a reaction in full before YouTube, and oh man, it’s so much better watching in full. I can’t believe how vocal you get, lol. You would be so fun to watch movies with, and I suppose this is the closest thing. Worth every penny!

Anonymous

Same error message. I can't stream and I can't download. Natalie, your just too popular :). I will try again tomorrow.

Ethan Plumer

I love this movie so much and it is always magical when I watch it, but watching it with you took the experience to a whole new level. I haven't felt that invested since I watched it the first time years ago. I'm so upset that someone spoiled it!! "I don't care what you believe. Just believe it." For my part, I firmly believe the person who spoiled it should be cursed with Odine's Curse, or just like, really bad hiccups for a long time. During editing you may have noticed that Jayne was checking everyone else's seatbelts before securing his own. It's not huge but I love that moment, a mini arc for Jayne.

Ethan Plumer

I knew this day would come and I'm terrified. Personally, I think the series + Serenity is too good. I figure it can only go down from here. I hope I'm wrong.

John

Quota Exceeded. :(

Troy B.

Hah, it figures the one time I go digging out an oldschool DVD instead of just "lazily" streaming it, I can't access the watchalong. =D (Says it'll be back in 24 hours, at least. I can wait 24 goram hours...)

Anonymous

I’m sad to see we crashed your drive. I don’t know any fixes either.

John

I tried again and could download it. It bombed a couple times, then gave me an access denied error. I refreshed and the download started.

Kevin Mowery

None of us are okay with it, Nat. There's a youtube channel, Cinema Therapy, that did a couple of videos on Serenity (the hosts are a director and a therapist whose friendship started when they went to see Serenity), one video on River's PTSD and another on the types of faith displayed in the movie.

Kevin Mowery

Also, I was lucky enough to meet both Ron Glass and Summer Glau at conventions. Ron Glass was exactly as cool as you'd expect and Summer Glau is amazingly nice. For more of Summer Glau, I'd recommend watching the first 2 Terminator movies if you haven't seen them (she's not in them) and then watching the unfortunately short-lived (two seasons, more like a season and a half, sadly ends on an unresolved cliffhanger) Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. That's not only got Summer Glau in it, but also Lena Headey (Game of Thrones).

Martin Heron

Have really enjoyed watching these again along with you. Like others have said, it was clear [REDACTED] was going to wreck you (sad you were spoiled, but as someone who's seen this film about ten times it gets me all the same) but it works so well to make that ending seem so impactful and tense, that anything could happen. Looking forward to your Marvel reacts, and though I know you'll probably have a pecking order I second the person above who recommended Chernobyl! An absolute masterpiece, and short enough that it's not a massive commitment.

John

Ok, just watching Nat's intro and she said she got a spoiler on Patreon. If it was someone here, may the fleas of a thousand camels nest in your shorts.

ShadowVessel π

Anybody else having trouble loading?

JediLounger

Hey Natalie, When you said you had a spoiler, I knew what it was. I'm sorry that it happened that way, I also got spoiled on the same thing. So you know, the end of the movie was going to be the end of season 2. So what happened in this movie was going to happen no matter what, it was in the plan from the start. And I know it was rough watching it, but it was needed. Got to rip the band-aid off and move on.

Alan Kobb

Jayne represents a character-type that is seen in plenty of literature. He is a villian with a good heart. He wasn't explored too deeply in Firefly/Serenety, but from some of the lines, I think he got into crime early as a way to survive, and decided that that made him a bad guy, and has no choice to be a bad guy, At times, particularly in Jaynestown you see that he has a heart and has a strong sense of justice, but belives that he is a bad guy, not deserving of anything good. He gets thrown in with the antiheros of The Serenety, and sees them doing crime for the right reasons, (Robin Hood), and begins to slowly redeem himself. It might have taken several seasons, but he might have become a more rightous character over time. You may have seen other characters like him in other literature. There is a similar character in Game of Thrones. A character that the audience roots for even as he feels that he us unredeemable. (All I'm saying...)

Aaron Lovik

When I heard somebody spoiled Serenity for Nat in her comments. https://youtu.be/oXwyVcLq4Ec

MotoDork

WHO TF WOULD SPOIL ANYTHING IN THIS MOVIE FOR YOU???

Troy B.

I don't think it was deliberate on their part, they were making a comment about Alan Tudyk deaths in movies (and I won't say what movie thread it was in, since that would potentially be a spoiler for some, too.) I had hoped they would delete it before she saw it, but apparently they didn't.

Troy B.

Oh man... every time during the Firefly viewing when Natalie would talk about how excited she was for "closure" in Serentiy, I kept thinking, "Not sure you want all this closure." I'm glad I rewatched it, though, because I was almost as broken up as she was when I first saw this, and I hadn't seen the movie in about a decade, and forgot that a lot of people actually survived. In my exaggerated fuzzy memories of it, nearly everyone died.

Leaf on the Wind

The poem with the albatross he was referring to was "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner." A tale of a ship that when they departed they were followed by an albatross, which was considered a good omen. But a newb sailor took out a bow and arrow and shot it. After that, the sailor had to wear the dead albatross around his neck and their good omen turned sour. Since then, an albatross has been considered bad luck.

Matthew Periolat

Thought I knew all I wanted to say upfront before we even started. Thought I’d make a few comments, maybe a correction here and there (it’s pronounced WEE-don, by the way), but truth is... I lack words at the moment. I’m thinking of my ex right now. I saw Serenity only once, our first big date movie. We had started Firefly and made it as far as Our Mrs Reynolds before the movie came out. We went in with favorites (Book for her, Wash for me) and... we never finished Firefly after the movie. Always meant to, just... never happened. So yeah, my memories do have a bit of the sad. But still worth watching. Only regret on this pass? Couldn’t do an emergency airdrop of Puffs to you because I think you needed it. Breaks the heart you had a spoil, but glad you could still enjoy the movie on its merits. And you know me by now... where next, Columbus? I’m ready for the next one, the next memory made or renewed. Next time then.

Alan Kobb

It's the word "betwixed" that makes it poetry! :)

Troy B.

I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard good things about "Con Man," which has Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion. Tudyk was also my all-time favorite villain in the show "Doom Patrol". And I think now he's the new animated Joker.

BHillzebub

She knows about K-2SO in fact it was a post about this on her Rogue One reaction that she replied to that she was spoiled in. The following comment remarked that upon seeing Serenity they turned to their partner and said "They killed wash again" :(

Anonymous

Really disappointed in whoever spoiled it for you. That was so incredibly shocking when it happened, and so powerful. It's like having the twist in The Sixth Sense spoiled!

Anonymous

If you have not seen them, go watch the Terminator, then Terminator 2 but after that check out The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Summer Glau is in that one. the series is longer than Firefly but it is only two seasons. The first being only 9 episodes (cut short by the writer's strike) the second season is 20+ episodes. Good watch though. Also, check out the series Chuck. Adam Baldwin is in that one and he is great in it. It is a commitment though because it is 5 seasons. Check out Tucker and Dale vs Evil. it's a funny movie with Alan Tudyk.

Anonymous

Joss Whedon knows life is unfair and incorporates it into a LOT of his work.

John

Nat, you mentioned the lighting and camera work being different. I don't know if you noticed but the entire Serenity set was new. The old sets had been destroyed and the new sets were quite a bit larger. You can really tell in the hallway where the crew quarters are. I liked the end scene with the Operative. He was a true believer, which is what made him so dangerous, willing to do anything for the cause, and at the end he had lost his faith in the Alliance. I always felt Shepard Book had been an Operative and left in a similar way, having lost faith in the cause and in Book's case finding his own faith.

John

It's no secret that Mal's character was based on a Han Solo type rogue. The scene when Mal is rescuing Inara was a jab at Lucasfilm when they changed the Cantina scene in A New Hope so Greedo shot before Han did. This scene with the Operative unarmed and Mal shooting anyway was specifically to make a jab at "Han shot first." I have a t-shirt with a picture of Mal on it that says "I shoot first."

Sean

I'm rather glad that spoiled scene still had that much of an impact. That's the brilliance of that scene though. It subverts expectations.

Anonymous

I’m so sorry you got a spoiler. I read the same spoiler and my reaction was ‘oh not (enter character name)’ as I didn’t know either. Even knowing that while watching, tears. Dang. Love your reactions, please keep doing what you’re doing!

Ron K

Yes! I, Robot! Natalie definitely needs to add that to the list.

Robert Reichle

Man, I lived that one, and it still hurts today. I was going to go see The Sixth Sense only a day or two after it was released, and on the Friday of release day (it had midnight showings, so it had been seen by some) someone walked into the room and the first words out of their mouths (obviously on purpose) were to spoil the twist. I still went with my wife, and she got to see it without spoiler, but I can never know what that actually felt like for people who were allowed to just enjoy the movie as it was meant to be enjoyed. People who spoil things on purpose must be slapped and slapped HARD.

Anonymous

Definitely recommend watching Con Man as a follow-up to Firefly, as it's basically about Alan Tudyk as a guy who used to play the second-in-command on a spaceship, with Nathan Fillion as his captain.

Sean

Oh, and it's safe to share this XKCD comic now lol https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/action_movies.png

"I'm not okay" its been over 15 years...i'm still not okay.

Anonymous

I have seen this movie a half dozen times at least. I'm pretty sure I saw this movie before I ever saw the series as a reason I wanted to see the show in the first place. "The scene" will never stop hitting hard. I tear up preemptively as they land knowing that scene is coming. The scene with Book hurts because they dwell on it, we spend time with him passing, and then something horrible happens with the people of Haven. The scene with Wash HURTS because it's still "going" for twenty minutes afterwards -- it's incredibly sudden, it doesn't slow down, the audience like the characters don't get time to grieve or process what just happened. Hogan Washburne, 2003-2005; he died as he lived, "a leaf on the wind". Oh, and Tudyk voices Hei Hei (the rooster) in Moana so that's pretty terrific.

ShadowVessel π

I hope you buy these on Blu-ray. The experience of the special features alone is worth the money... especially the blooper reels. Lol And every episode has commentary

Anonymous

Google finally let me stream Natalie's reaction. This was one of her best. She was even more animated and expressive than normal. I am almost glad Natalie saw the spoiler about Wash dying. It hit her hard, but probably would have been even harder if she didn't know it was coming.

Baron

I feel so spoiled with my OCD watched it 3 times today, so totally broke my rules sorry.

Garren Haskell

Nat, the way you feel completely wrecked for the whole climax and ending of the movie is how the rest of us Browncoats still feel to this day. And you're one of us now. Some wounds will never heal.

Michael G. Munz

Best reaction moment ever: Nat right after "I swallowed a bug!"

Anonymous

Please please please watch the blooper reel for this film. It's top tier.

Ken

I saw Serenity a handful of times back in the day, but tonight was the first time I picked up on the subtext between Mal and Zoe at the end. "Think she'll hold together?" They're not talking about the ship (or not only talking about the ship). It's Mal's way of asking Zoe if she's okay.

Anonymous

A short entertaining watch is Nathan Fillion talking at a convention about a certain surprise scene.

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

I watched Firefly as it was (horribly) aired on Fox.  Bought the box set dvds the week it came out.  Devoured every episode at least 5 times - and at least 3 more with commentary.  All that is before the LONG wait to the making and release of the film.   I've never consumed better fiction.  I made several 'Browncoats"/"Flans" - including my big brother. I knew with your matchless, giant heart that it was likely to be rough on you, but i sensed you could handle it.  I haven't watched Serenity in quite a while.  Seen it at minimum 7 times, but it has been a minute.  I've looked forward to rewatching with you.  And you are the perfect watching partner!  Many i watched with IRL didn't pay enough attention, didn't feel it the way i knew they could.  But you, i think were genetically engineered to make reaction videos.  You tune in fully, you analise (as i do) some of the artistry while still empathically feeling the stakes. As i knew it would, it broke my heart to watch your heart break.  It was only knowing that - like Zoe - you'd come through it and be better for it that i could handle it.  If at all possible, i do hope you will watch deleted scenes and bloopers.  The cast and crew of this masterpiece are as lovable and hilarious as the characters.   I almost want a GIF of your gestures and 'dance' as you realise that they are going to lead the reavers into the alliance.  I say almost because it was too wonderful to trivialise as a gif. This was the best of your videos yet, and the one i've been waiting for longest.  Cannot wait for more.   (C8

Robert Reichle

I saw this in the theater 15 years ago, and I'm still sad about Wash. You just learn to deal with it. :)

Anonymous

You over think the Reavers... there is plenty of human history with reaver like groups. Many of the war torn African Nations and even some older European and Asian countries have had barbaric cannibalism occur. For years before it is stopped. Warring factions would sometimes take youth and force them to kill their own villagers and then eat their flesh to basically make sure the individual would never feel they could go back to normal ever again.

Anonymous

As for mal on top of the ship. Easily assumed they were waiting for him to get back inside before taking off. Waiting for him to say go go go. I think the big mystery is how did Inara know to set up the flash bomb before the fight happened? Possibly sees the future? The hardest part for me wasn't just Wash dying. It was in the end when Mal asks Zoe if she thinks the ship will hold together. And Zoe replies She's torn up plenty but she'll fly true....the reference to herself hits hard.

I think many missed, when he got his Hat from mom in the message, the letter he read from his mom mentioned that he sends money home to help her and his sick sister. He's working for his family as "the man of the house".

Btw, the “albatross” reference is from The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge. Thanks!

Well done! I went on the same exact roller coaster ride you did when I first saw this. Welcome to the Browncoats.

Robert Avila

I saw this with some friends back when it first came out, without watching the series. I liked it even though had little context for the characters, aside from a light synopsis from my friends. Now having seen the series and the movie with you, I can truly appreciate how amazing it all was. One of the few things I remembered was Wash, but it still didn't make it any easier to take. I knew it was going to happen, but the tears were still flowing. Thank you for another amazing series, and looking forward to future videos.

Calo Grsf

I just saw your reaction and it is so strong in emotion that I feel a pinch in my heart when I see you in front of the fateful moment, but at the same time that's why we love you, you're a very sensitive, empathetic person and you quickly get attached to the characters and the universe! Stay as you are, stay golden and safe!

John

We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty!

Martin Heron

I think Alan Tudyk's popped up in most Disney animations the last few years, even just as a cameo! Always funny having that moment of "hmm, that voice is famili... oh it's Alan Tudyk again!" Went on a run of watching like five films in a row a few years ago and he was in all of them. First two I knew he was in, then the third surprised me, the fourth I was sure he wasn't in either and then HE WAS ANYWAY (I think that was one of the Disney cameos), and then the fifth was Dodgeball because at that point I was just going to accept my fate and only watch Alan Tudyk movies.

I have been waiting for/dreading this day for you since you watched the first episode. It's such a well done movie. I came into the 'verse of Firefly via the movie first. I felt so connected to the characters from the excellent acting and writing. The opening sequence on the ship really (re)establishes them so well. When I left the theater I felt like I knew them all. Then I looked it up, and realized I had missed the show! So, while I suffered the trauma you did watching the movie, I got to go back and see it all from the begining...once I was able to track down the box set DVD! I'm sure others have mentioned this already, but there are comics that fill in spaces, and continue the story on after the events of the movie. Dark Horse did a few mini series that were set between episodes/movie. And even filled us in on Shep's past! Then they did a few post movie. Now, Boom Studios, has comics filling in stuff between episodes and flashbacks etc. Good stuff if you want to find out more!

Cpt Babyface

How do Reavers clean their spears? They run 'em through the Wash. Sorry I just had to say it now that the series is over. I hate that he died and that it was spoiled for you but I'm so glad you enjoyed the show and movie. If you really like Nathan Fillion shows then a good show to check out is The Rookie. So far it's only 2 seasons but they should be filming season 3 once Covid cases start to dissipate. There're some fun little references and cameos in it too. Also you should really check out Tucker and Dale vs Evil. I would recommend avoiding the trailers though because they show a lot of important spoilers in them. All in all I love watching your reactions and hope you didn't stop reading after my terrible joke.

Texas Anla'Shok

Ever seen Castle? That was Nathan Dillion’s next big thing (after a number of other shows that only lasted one season). They make quite a few references to Firefly, especially in the early seasons.

Opti_Frog

Apart from the sound distortions during the screamy parts, this is one of my favorite reactions ever. ❤

I knew you couldn't wait❤️😏😎

How many times did someone run in to see if you were ok? "whats wrong?????!??? what do you mean you are watching a space horror western drama thriller comedy? There is no way it can be that sad...and funny...and tense..." The ending love/flight quote is one of my favorite (...as a pilot) Unfortunately, I saw the movie first, my group in college was working on our final in a lab one night late and they turned it on for background noise. I remember thinking... what is this silly mess? It was years later I discovered the series and it became one of my favorites.

Anonymous

Saw this movie opening at the theater... still the only time I have been with a packed audience that went from raucous to complete silence when Wash died. Every time I see that scene, it still goes quiet.

G. T. Blackwell

Don't know if anyone has said it already, but the singing commentary for Dr. Horrible is A-FUCKING-MAZING

G. T. Blackwell

Also, after making a comment elsewhere, I suggest watching The Expanse. Excellent sci-fi and a clear spiritual successor to Firefly.

Heidi Liedtke

You mentioned Dr. Horrible, Joss Whedon credits The Guild as his inspiration for that. The Guild is a really fun show (originally on youtube) that stars Felecia Day, and was peak internet nerd fandom back in the day

Chris Gronau

Excellent reaction as usual. Thanks for letting us watch it with you, Nat.

Finally got to this. Watching this with you was way more stressful than when I watched it on my own. Big thanks for putting this out. So sorry that spoiler got to you, I was pretty upset that evening when I saw it mentioned. Yep, awhile ago when you said Wash was your favorite character, the entire Firefly portion of your fanbase went Hoo Boy... (tried to make that read like I picture you saying it). I'm sure your Youtube viewers will appreciate it if you can post this as a two parter. To others I'd recommend checking out "After Show Reactions" for the Wash scene. Best reaction prior to now. She just looks so lost. And again, Nathan talking about it at a convention.

Neil Silverman

Aw, man, I just sat down to finally relax and watch this, and google says the quota has been exceeded and I can't watch/download it right now. I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow. :-(

Garrick Smalley

It has been I don't remember how many years since I saw Wash die and it still gets to me. The harder one for me was Book. I was glad to hear when you edit this down for YouTube you will watch it for a 2nd and/or 3rd time, I think there were a couple of things missed when you were asking us questions. I have to say that dance is the first time I have seen anybody dance when the realize what Mal is about to do. Loved it. I am going to second making this a two parter post on YouTube. I am also going to 2nd looking for some of the gag reals and interviews at conventions. There was also a 10th(?) year reunion/ interview with some of the cast and Tim Minear you might either like or be able to react to. On a note of phycology for me serenity is were I understood Mal he is Wrath. In looking back at his actions across the show his wrath is very specific and focused and it allows him to do amazing things. Like accept help when he needs to. Be well

WackySwacky

Ya they really need to make a sequel series. It can even star a different cast of characters as long as the original characters show up from time to time in cameos and supporting roles. Obviously Mal and crew wouldn't be the same after a 20 year time gap and most of them are probably living different lives by this point (you can't stay a rogue forever). Regardless, I hope it happens some day. They'll definitely find some way of bringing Alan Tudyk back; either as a clone or long lost twin brother, or with good ol' time travel. It is Sci-Fi after all, anything can happen.

Eric Haefele

A great movie and a great reaction.

Scott Greene

It's a shame that the sudden (redacted) was spoiled for you here...but the reaction you had just goes to show how great the filmmaking was. When I was a kid, one of my friends told me about the death of a major character in a film I was about to see. But the film was so exciting, I forgot that he told me that! Of course, it doesn't hurt that "Serenity" has a 14-episode series that precedes it, so it's much easier to become emotionally attached to the main cast. I really loved re-watching this movie with you.

Good stuff Nat

I have watched the entirey of the series and this film more times than I'd like to admit, both with and without commentary. I remember a comment Josh Whedon had at that critical heartwrenching scene that he needed something to make the audience think that there was a possibility that no one was going to make it out alive. Therefore, for the sake of the story, I think he was effective. As to a series to follow this one, I'd recommend Dollhouse, which was Whedon's series, again with Fox, after he worked on this one. It's 2 season's at least. He knew it was going to be canceled when he started the 2nd season so he got a chance to end it properly. I even think it helped with the writing because it's a show which the first season does lag a bit, but has a killer second season. It has some great Alan Tudyk moments. I'd also recommend checking out Battlestar Galactica.

Great reaction, as always. Firefly was the reason I first saw your videos so I was really excited to see on Twitter that you'd recorded it, and I was too impatient to wait until the YouTube edit so I buckled and subscribed to someone's Patreon for the first time ever. Will probably go through and watch the full reaction videos for Firefly and maybe Mando at some point. I kinda glanced through some of the posts, but haven't seen any mention of you watching The Witcher... is that because you've already seen it? It would be a good one to watch to grow your sub base because it has a really extended fandom from all the books and video games, plus it's a really good series.

Darryl Low

Welcome. Good to have another Browncoat aboard. Check out Nat's Discord for chatting about movies and shows, and there's a list of everything she has seen, and yet to see.

Alan Tudyk has a brand new show starting on SCI-FY at the end of the month...

I re-watch Firefly at least once a year and Serenity more often than that. I never cry when Book dies or Wash. But watching how much it affected you made me into a big pile of goo. My sleeves are soaked from wiping my tears. One of my favorite things about the ending of Serenity is that Zoe finally got her slinky dress like the one she mentions to Kaylee in beginning of "Shindig".

Anonymous

Now that you've watched Serenity, I'll let you know that there is a graphic novel that tells Shepard's story. It's called Shepard's Tale from Dark Horse comics. Also there are a few comics that continue the Firefly story after Serenity. If you don't want to read them, but want to know about it. I can tell you at least about the one's I've read.

Eric Bogerd

I have been waiting since you started Firefly for this reaction. Serenity is still one of my favorite movies of all time, and based on your reactions to the series I knew this would be a journey for you. Seeing someone see it for the first time helped me to remember how amazing it was to see it for the first time myself. I hope you enjoyed it enough to consider checking out the further stories and backstories in the comics. There are some great stories still to read.

Jeremy Vickers

If you really like to watch Alan Tudyk’s comedy acting I highly recommend watching him in Doom Patrol he is absolutely brilliant and narrates most of the episodes in character. Also if you’re looking for a new crew to cheer on I highly recommend The Expanse They are currently in the middle of their fifth season. It’s my favorite show right now on TV I think you would love it. Fantastic job. You are the most sincere person on YouTube I just had to be a member of your Patreon! Thanks for everything!

Brandon Duckett

I joined your Patreon specifically for this watch along, and I am so happy I did. This is a crazy rollercoaster of a movie and I'm glad you (currently watching) seem to be enjoying it as much as I did.

YOU MADE ME CRY!!!! I'm a grown man crying like a little baby. That ain't right.

Reece Hart

The sentence "I am a leaf on the wind." will never not hurt

Alexander Schulz

This movie always breaks me. Seeing it again reminded me how much it changed how I lived my life in the past 15 years. Definitely one of my most favourite movies of all time. Terribly underrated.

Anonymous

I’ve been watching your YouTube reactions for a few months. I joined here because I wanted to see your full reaction to this movie, I was not disappointed. Serenity is one of my favorite movies ever, so glad you enjoyed it. Sorry about the spoiler you saw about Wash. some people are too careless with them (and a few simply do it on purpose). I’m going to go back and watch other full reactions now.

Shelly

For the person that revealed the spoiler on here, I strongly feel like you owe everyone an apology. Especially Natalie. You were personally responsible for ruining the point of the react video.

Anonymous

Hmm, I get this when the video tries to load from your link: "Unable to play this video at this time. The number of allowed playbacks has been exceeded. Please try again later."

Robert Carroll

This is definitely Joss firing on all thrusters. The laugh, cry, cry laugh, scream, repeat tactic can almost be exhausting at times, but I love every second of it. This is my favorite reaction from Natalie thus far. Nat would adore Buffy! It is however, a grand undertaking.

Anonymous

Since you like Joss and Alan, you should try the very underrated Dollhouse. Like Firefly, it was also cut way too short. You only really start realizing what the story is about in season 2 when it was cancelled.

Anonymous

You held strong as long as you could Nat. Even made me cry a little watching it again with you. Thank you for helping me remember how much I love this movie and the series :)

Denise Mullin

I have a secret fan theory that the assassin character is Shepard Book’s son. That’s why he knows so much about the government and why he received instant respect when he needed medical attention in the episode where he was wounded

Johanna Wilson

Any chance of you reacting to the bloopers?

Anonymous

Will you react to my documentary about Firefly and its fans? Many have said this is the closest thing to a canon followup. We interviewed most of the cast and crew and many fans. This is a legit documentary that was even on Netflix for several years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evu3JSf1VEQ

Anonymous

Yah. Watching you react to this was like watching in the theater with my wife. She wasn't the biggest fan, and in fact had only seen a few episodes completely but she lost it at Shepard and more so with Wash. The theater was so silent except for all the sniffles. Gotta admit I was have trouble blinking fast enough to see the screen clearly. It saddened me to see you cry but I suppose, that was the intent and why the Browncoat's are a stronger bunch than ever. .... Take my love, Take my land....

Anonymous

Saw this a while back and just watched it again... It's a great doc!

Anonymous

The first time I saw Serenity was a prescreening in Arizona. We had Joss Whedon and Summer Glau in the audience with us. It was magical. However, some of the fans were ready to strangle Joss at the end.

Anonymous

I've watched Serenity at least 10 times. Still I cried when you did.

Anonymous

Besides Jeremy's official contributions, some fans made other creations. "Succotash" was doing video mash-ups, I just found this that I uploaded from an old CD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fm9gyMQB2c&ab_channel=TracyLee

Sean Novack

I was watching an interview with Alan Tudyk where he was telling a story of signing autographs at a Convention as a Guest of Honor. A woman who was a huge fan came up asking for an autograph. He signed it with the message "I'm a leaf on the wind...". She took one look at the writing and burst into tears in front of him...

Anonymous

If you've not yet seen the bloopers. https://youtu.be/nPMfEPPSfhQ It'll make you love them even more :)

Brian E

Man they did such a good job updating the set for the ship. Amazing what a little extra money can do.

Brian E

This was such a good vid

Powers209

I have a theory that the Pax was connected to the program that created/turned River Tam into a weapon. I believe that River was always a Psyker even if a low-level one that would put her at a higher level of intelligence when compared to someone without such a gift. but the Acadamy increased her gift with a form of the G-Pax series treatment which the Alliance was trying to create a perfectly controlled weapon. The Alliance used Pax G-23 on "Miranda" to control the masses. My theory is that the Pax unknowingly created a group of people psychically connected in order to create mass control in that group. The Alliance wanted the people to be able to claim others in their presence. This was the flaw in the program because when it failed one in the group it caused others to suffer that same flaw. So when one person laid down to die, others did the same. Now Reavers are a group of enhanced Psykers with a form of psychosis that can affect others like a psychic virus. These are people suffering from a list of mental disorders. Including Intermittent explosive disorder, Psychopathy, and Schizophrenia. I believe this is why River has such a bad reaction to being near Reavers.... Even at great distances.
