I know this is a really old reaction, but I just watched it and it was a great reaction, please add John Carpenter's Escape From New York to the list, also starring Kurt Russell, and also awesome, not scarry though.

Gath Bard

Spooptober. The word you were looking for is Spooptober

Calo Grsf

I hope it wasn’t hard for you to sleep hahaha

Oh Snap, Here we go! This should be fun. Edit: So now that you have seen it, I can share my brief story/My history with the movie. My brother and I stumbled upon this movie when I was 5-6 years old(This was in 1985-1986). I only saw about 10 minutes of the movie. But it was not just any 10 minutes. It was the kennel sequence. All of it. The movie was being aired unedited on PBS if I recall correctly. We did not have cable, so there were very few channels the movie could have been on. I have no idea why it was being aired. So right after the sequence ended, we were called to dinner, and my parents were really mad that we watched it. I think I actually watched the movie for real around 12 years later, in high school. It has been a staple of mine since.

Darryl Low

I've only just watched the intro and I'm loving it. Awesome job Nat. I think you should call this collection The Natmare Season.

Ronny Boss

Oh man I can't wait to get off work to watch this. The thing is one of my favorites 😁 I might have to break out my VHS collection and do this old school 😂

Ron K

I couldn't wait for you to watch this one but I do feel bad that we didn't give you any warning about the scene with the dogs. I watch this movie at least once a year and I still have trouble with that scene. You're a trooper Nat!

Reggie Clark

That dog was nominated for Best Actor in 1982 (100% sarcasm).

Curaitis

Great Movie and great Reaction. btw Natalie, wrote you a suggestion here on Patreon regarding Twitch and Watch Parties. Its a Feature that allows you to watch Movies from Prime Video with others (who also have Prime) on your Channel there. Maybe its a thing for you.

Ha! Your eyebrows... are a lot.

Ha ha ha, Loved the screams and no's and why's. Just a quick question. Did you notice at the very end of the movie that you could see the steam of Mac's breath, but you didn't see any steam off of Childs' breath? Hehehe, now will you go back and check that out? Happy haunting :)

PickettsChargingPort

I'm not looking forward to the kennel scene with her.

Kelvin

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeees

Andrew T

My favorite part is at 1:39:52 ("this is awful!") with the mouth covering/hand flapping technique. Hope it makes the YouTube cut.

Natalie Ghould

PickettsChargingPort

Just at the kennel scene, now. Should I just skip forward. Scared Natalie is fine. Crying Natalie is not fine.

JSounds

Natalloween?

Loneclaw

Natalie: "I hope nothing happens to this dog." Me: :]

Loneclaw

Seriously, though, this is by far the best blind reaction I've ever seen of this film! <3

Robert Avila

Yet another great reaction video. For the record, I didn't vote for this movie because I was hoping for you to watch it later on in the month. Great suspenseful movie. My personal favorite reaction line was "how did they get the dog to act?"

Darryl Low

The dog next appeared in The Journey of Natty Gann in 1985.

Darryl Low

The remake / prequel from 2011 tells the story of how the Norwegians first found the ship and what happened at their camp.

Anonymous

Just finished. That was great! And the main thing *I* know Donald Moffat from is he played Lyndon Johnson in The Right Stuff.

Andy Jordan

This was a scream, literally! Scary movie month is off to a great start. And the score was by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone, who only just passed this July, and who'd been composing for films since the '50s. What makes this more interesting is that The Thing is one of the relative few films for which director John Carpenter didn't compose the score himself. There are only a handful of directors I can think of (Charlie Chaplin, John Carpenter, Clint Eastwood, Robert Rodriguez) who often score their own films. Here's hoping The Exorcist wins the next poll!

nataliegold

I actually found out I've only seen him in a super gritty indie movie called On The Nickel!

Joel S

Nat spending the first 15 minutes hoping the dog is okay and wondering why the Norwegians were shooting it Me: Kill it! Kill it! Kill it!

Joe Jeffords

This would have made a great quote for the movie posters: "This is like messed up 'Old Yeller'!" - Natalie Gold

Matthew Periolat

Well, the title should be obvious! Given you don’t sleep afterwards, it should be Natalie’s Nightmares. YMMV of course. First time watch and I think this was perfectly acceptable entertainment and a reminder of what a badass Kurt Russell was in the early 80s. This, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, lots of stuff. Personally, I loved Overboard if you want more fun light hearted Kurt after Nightmare Fuel. For next year or even for another time, there’s the 1956 Thing From Another World, which this borrowed heavily from and was a big part of the 50s sci fi wave along with Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds and Day The Earth Stood Still. If you ever have a retro month, there you have it. Stay spooky, Natalie... and pleasant dreams?

Curaitis

Btw if someone wanna know what happened at the Norwegian Station. There is a Prequel from 2011(?) also called The Thing.

It Hurt A Lot

Shriek Week. Kinda like shark week but... idk. Also, "your eyebrows are...a lot" lol

Ronny Boss

Jesus I had to bring my pig in to watch with me half way through. Great movie but I think a little pee came out when that thing broke through the floor

Ra's al Cool

The excellent score was done by LEGENDARY film composer Ennio Morricone, who is probably most famous for his "spaghetti western" scores ("The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly," etc) and is indisputably one of the greatest of all time. He just passed away earlier this year. Carpenter, the director, is actually a pretty well known film composer in his own right! If you watch any of his other films, it's likely he scored them himself!

Theres an interesting theory that at the end of the movie when MacReady and Childs are sitting there in the cold waiting to die, is that MacReady suspects that Childs is the Thing and what is in the alcohol bottle isnt alcohol but kerosene and thats why MacReady laughs because he knows that Childs is the Thing. had a great time watching with you, was fun.

Paul C

A classic, that I think, will stand the test of time for generations to come. This type of thriller/horror is the best. It doesn't rely on gore, thousands of gallons of blood, special effects, or jump scares. Though it needs some, it is mainly centered around a great story, intellectually involving for the viewer, that prays on mistrust, paranoia, and self preservation. Great credit to the original.

Ron K

Watching this over the years I always thought they were both ok and just froze to death. But I read an interview years ago that the original screen play had a scene where you show MacReady and Childs getting back to civilization and it shows that they are both Things. I think Carpenter even filmed the scene. After I read that I went back and watched the end and after Childs drank from the bottle I remembered that even a single cell could infect someone. I pretty much figure now that the "MacReady" who handed Childs the bottle was The Thing.

Ken

How about...."Haunted Gold"

Dave M.

That “welcome to spooky season” at the beginning was very ASMR-y. Very relaxing whisper. Ever thought about getting into that, Natalie?

Dan Hensley

One of my favorite horror films that a watch a couple times a year. This reaction made it 10x more enjoyable, thank you! Also I like the name HalloWatch.

warcrimes

As a horror movie fan, The Thing is a top five movie for me. I haven't seen it in years and watching with you "in the room" was awesome. John Carpenter scores his own movies, his soundtrack for 'Halloween' is pretty iconic. I hope you're watching that one, it literally invented the slasher genre, so is a bit dated but still a classic.

MotoDork

1. Rob Bottin is the MOTHERFUCKING MAN when it comes to practical special effects. 2. This is based on a 1938 short novel called "Who Goes There?" 3. This film will never get old

Natalie mentioned the importance of sound design in scary movies. As oxymoron as this sounds, the sound design for A Quiet Place is amazing.

crawlie

Yip great movie - with a million theories as to who was the thing at the end, when each person became the thing, etc... My personal favourite ties into the chess game we see MacReady playing at the beginning. He is white, and gets checkmated by black - then "wins" by breaking the game with the drink. The theory goes that he's "white" at the end, Childs-thing is "black" and he's been checkmated... but he's actually drinking poison at the end, and offering it to Child's to make sure the thing doesn't "win".

Jack the Narrator

Many on here have already mentioned it, but if you are interested in finding out what exactly happened to the Norwegian research team as well as learn more about the Thing's modus operandi, I recommend checking out the 2011 THING prequel starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Joel Edgerton. Also you mentioned at the end of the video that you had an easier time with watching a cartoonishly gory movie, then might I suggest the late Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR, inspired by the works of H.P Lovecraft and starring my all-time favorite scream queen Barbara Crampton.

thescourge

Oh Child’s was def infected. The “doong-doong” music only ever comes on when the Thing is on screen.

Brandon Scott

As to the "light hearted" movie you talked about, does anyone know the old cult classics Little Monster or Drop Dead Fred?? I think it either one would make a fun choice for this time of year.

An idea for the name of October scary movies for Natalie: Natalie's Golden Natmares

John Burns Burnsey

There are also some very good horror parodies. Tucker and Dale vs evil is one of the best.

Anonymous

I want to see you watch Hereditary.

NobleSon32

Love the new intro music!

Danishprince

Was my first time watching it as well - Enjoyable film but didn't find it scary. Think it could have benefitted a bit more from the whole psychological aspect of not knowing who was who but I really liked it

Anonymous

I hope you're okay after watching this nightmare fuel of a movie...which brings me to my suggestion to call this month "Nat's Nightmare Fuel Month". :D

Michael Labs

This and the remake of The Blob messed with me a bit when I was young. More campy offerings might be Tucker and Dale versus Evil or Trollhunter.

Anonymous

Maybe Ernest Scared Stupid

Peter Hudson

"Burn it! Childs, WHAT THE FUCK?!" And, subscribed.

Anakin Starkiller

This isn't like Invasion of The Body Snatchers. Although the assimilation is almost the same there's no emotion leftover from the host and that's how you can tell from those movies. Here in this movie The Thing is able to make a perfect imitation so that you don't without some kind of test.

Anakin Starkiller

Why does it look like an Alaskan Crab best thing she said 🤣🤣🤣

Anakin Starkiller

The late Ennio Morricone scored this film. Best Italian film composer of all time. Sadly he passed away this year

Anakin Starkiller

If you want a more spooky movie but you want to stay with John Carpenter then The Fog is definitely awesome

Thomas Yanez

Homer? LOL, panicked attempt to remember Naul's name had a critical failure.

Ian Cano

It was fun watching The Thing (1982) with you. This was my first full-length watch along movie with you. Your highlights reaction to this movie appeared in my YouTube feed, I watched a few minutes and thought that you sounded interesting, liked your sense of humor so I decided to watch the whole movie with you since this is a childhood favorite of mine, first seeing it when it came out on HBO in '82-'83. You remind me of my best friend's mom, who would watch scary movies with us when we were in grade school back in the late 1970's. She would fill the room with her commentary, shouts, screams, etc. while my friend and I would be too scared to say anything. Her noise was reassuring actually and so was listening to you while watching this tension-filled flick so thank you. I'm looking forward to watching more movies with you. 😀👍
