Hey guys!

Well it's finally here! My reaction to GLADIATOR! I know this one took quite a while to get up since the poll. Thank you so much for being patient with all my wifi/tech issues last week.

This movie is absolutely incredible and I'm so happy to be able to share my reaction to it with you. If you happen to be an empathetic person, and seeing other people cry makes you tear up yourself, I suggest you get a box of tissues ready...

Until the next one, have a great weekend and ✨stay golden! ✨

SO hyped, cannot waut to watch this.

Calo Grsf

Yeaah one of the best film ever and one of the best soundtrack!

He just wanted to go home! :-(

I love Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard’s score to this movie. I saw the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra perform it a few years ago with a full choir. It was amazing!

Reid Ellis

Ya Hans Zimmer liked the soundtrack he created so much he reused the main battle theme when he later worked on the Pirates of the Caribbean sopundtrack! — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vInYMVxYhh4

Reid Ellis

Interesting historical note from https://dailyhistory.org/How_historically_accurate_is_the_Gladiator%3F : "Something not shown in the film is that gladiator contests may have looked familiar to us. Gladiators often were used to sponsor products and billboards often hung in the stadium where contests would have been held. These advertisements were not shown in the film, mostly because the producers thought film audiences would not believe it since it is so similar to our modern sports."

RX2904

Too bad this is the theatrical cut. I only have the extended cut which has 14 (!) additional scenes. Watching along is not possible this way. Oh well. :(

Anonymous

BTW Natalie - Hans Zimmer also did the score for your favorite, The Lion King :-)

Benjamin Segura

Gladiator is one of my FAV movies ever! Cant wait to see this with you!

The Hedge Knight

I guess I have plans for tonight now. Better grab a drink and a snack. 🍺🍿

Anonymous

Hi Nat are you sure it's the 2hr 50 m version? Your Vimeo is only 2hr 32m long!

nataliegold

Wow...maybe I’m losin it...I could’ve sworn that was the version I watched but guess not 😂

Armchair Wizard

Hey Natalie, great reaction as always. I wanted to answer two of your questions, first, yes, the Roman Emperor would sometimes give thumbs up or down to decide who lived or died. Also, that image of Maximus walking through the wheat fields is not only home, but also Elysium. Which is sort of like Greek heaven, to put it simply.

wroot

Yeah, back to back next day and no tissues :D

RX2904

Hey Nat! Just fyi, the version you reacted to is most definitely not the extended cut. :)

wroot

That's ok, men weep during this movie.. :) Btw, there were battle dogs, many of them. Because dogs are good at fighting. And thumbs up and down might originated from gladiators fights, i believe. Makes it awkward to use such things in social media :)

JediLounger

I love this movie. It is not historically accurate at all. I kinda see it as a historical comic book movie. Seeing this in the theaters was a crazy, insane experience.

Thomas Malley

Wow I never liked this movie much watching it when I was younger, but watching it along you made me cry too at the end! Maybe Hans Zimmer's music distracted me too much the first time around (for sounding like other Hans Zimmer scores)

Paul C

That was a good movie. Few points to your comments: The bugs in the wound were maggots. An old method for keeping wounds clean. The thumbs up or down was emperors way of determining if a person lives or dies. And the flashback of fields was the Roman view of Elysium - their afterlife. Maximus mentioned that in his speech just before the first battle.

So glad you liked this movie. Now you can listen to The Rewatchables Podcast review of Gladiator and totally connect with it. The Rewatchables Podcast is a must if you love movies.

Dan Tydeman

Really great, one of my all time favourites!

Alan Kobb

Hi Natalie-- For those of us who want to watch along, could you tell us in the description which version of the movie you are doing? Gladiator has an extended edition. I think that since your video runs 2 hours and 34 minutes that it is the original cut, but if we take off the closing credits, I'm not sure.

Jack the Narrator

The extended version of Gladiator, while perhaps not necessary, offers several splendid and intense moments. I wish that Connie Neilsen had been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Her performance as Lucilla was criminally underrated. Bittersweet fact about this film: Oliver Reed, the actor who played Proximo, passed away unexpectedly near the end of filming. Ridley Scott and editor Pietro Scalia utilized footage of him from previously filmed scenes to incorporate him into the remainder of the movie. Another fact: Tommy Flannagan, the actor who played Cicero, the scars on his face are real. Russell Crowe is one of my absolute favorite actors, and while I'm happy he won an Oscar for this, there are so many performances he's given that are even better than this. Among them I highly recommend L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, THE INSIDER, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, MASTER & COMMANDER, and CINDERELLA MAN. In addition to the four other films that Crowe collaborated with Ridley Scott on: A GOOD YEAR, AMERICAN GANGSTER, BODY OF LIES, and 2010's ROBIN HOOD. Some other Ridley Scott films that I hope you get to see one day include BLACK HAWK DOWN, the Directors Cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, WHITE SQUALL, MATCHSTICK MEN, BLACK RAIN, THE MARTIAN, G.I. JANE, and of course, PROMETHEUS. (I'm assuming you've seen BLADE RUNNER).

It Hurt A Lot

I was crying with you at the end and my dog came up and tried to comfort me just like Koda. You gotta love dogs

Anonymous

Really loved your reaction. I cried like my eyes out at the wife/son hanging scene. I had to suppress sobbing in the theater at that point. Quick note personally i don't mind at all if you pause the movie if you need to check something, or divert your attention to rl stuff. Its completely understandable. Its way better to do that then to miss out possibly key elements on the screen. It was not the case here, nor have you stopped listening, just a footnote :)

Thomas Malley

I think it would be ok to pause as long as you count down to it or state what the new time code you’re starting from is. If you need a break.

Anonymous

Hey Natalie, reaction video was great as always and Gladiator is a fantastic movie. As another comment mentions it breaks from the real history a LOT but is still a very fun and entertaining experience, and it did at least get the look of the time very right. Rome in its hay-day would have been quite the spectacle. I'd like to put forward another Ridley Scott historical action epic for you to watch, Kingdom of Heaven; another stellar cast (Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, and Eva Green aren't even half the BIG names let alone "hey I recognize that guy" character actors and the like) and one of my favourite movies. If you do give it a watch though, I HIGHLY recommend you watch the Director's Cut instead of the Theatrical. A lot of Ridley Scott movies got one eventually, but KoH in particular really needed it -- the theatrical release has a lot of context for important scenes or just important scenes themselves removed and really really suffers because of it. It's been said Kingdom of Heaven is near the bottom of Scott's movies in terms of quality in the theatrical version, but as the Director's Cut it's increasingly seen as one of his best movies ever.

Frank Rosales

I believe this movie is what cemented Joaquin Phoenix as a great actor early on in his career.

Matthew Periolat

Funny, I actually always had a problem with Gladiator because I kept comparing it to Spartacus and Braveheart. Watching it this time, I was finally able to see it on its own merits and feel like it was a good movie in its own right. It is very entertaining and I’m so glad you allowed me to give it another chance with fresh eyes. Great talent of yours, by the way. Oh, if you want to see Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix in really different early stuff, Virtuosity for Russell, SpaceCamp for Joaquin. SpaceCamp is actually loaded with young talent who would go on to other stuff. Thanks again for the fresh eyes.

Anakin Starkiller

Gladiator is an epic and it's really the film that brought back epics

Anakin Starkiller

I think you should do Heat next. One of the awesome crime thrillers of all time.

Joe Jeffords

You definitely topped yourself with this one, Natalie. Good stuff.

David Martin

Im a sucker for these kinds of movies....you might have to check out Troy and Immortals

crawlie

Gladiator has this effect on most people. That visceral reaction when Maximus revealed himself to the Emperor haha! For me, what really gets me is the music - particularly the end song "Now We Are Free". I listened to it a great deal after my mother was taken from us - it's like a beautiful balm.

Robert Avila

I love your reactions! It's official! I WANT TO WATCH EVERY MOVIE EVER MADE WITH YOUR REACTIONS! Side note: have a tissue box on stand-by, just in case. Another amazing movie. I actually didn't like Joaquin Phoenix for a while after this movie because he was so amazing in this movie! This was definitely one of my all time favorite movies ( along with the Matrix, and of course the Star Wars movies). You've watched wonderful stuff and will watch anything you react to. You're definitely my new "watch with" buddy. Side note: will Tyler be making an appearance in any videos? Just wondering. Till the next one, I'll try to stay as golden as you. 💖

Endling_king

I like the fact that in the few films/tv shows ive seen Tommy Flannagan in they actually incorporated his scars into the characters past. i first noticed this in Sons of Anarchy.

Xethuron

My all time favorite! Especially the score. Before Gladiator came out I didn´t pay much attention to the music in movies. The Gladiator soundtrack was the first one I bought on CD. Thank you, Hans Zimmer! Since then I do more listen to soundtracks then other music. Some of my favorites beside Gladiator: Lord of the rings, Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Avatar, Star Wars, Lion King

nataliegold

Aww yay! That makes me so happy to hear. I definitely need to buy another box of tissues haha. Also, Tyler’s not really interested in being in my videos. So probably no appearance from him

Joseph Santwan

...not getting another copy of the film to watch along.

Anonymous

Despite the fact that I have seen this movie so much time. I teared up with you again watching this it was like I was watching first Time. Thank you for that nice experience

Armchair Wizard

well its required, and its normal for reaction series on patreon to require this.

Luis R.

Such a good movie really glad you liked it! It got my tears going again even tho I have seen it before. Just want to say I am really enjoying being a part of your patreon and every movie/show has been so fun to watch along with you! 👍🏼🤙🏼

Anonymous

This was actually my first time watching this too. Pretty awesome movie.

Anonymous

I have followed you on YouTube for a while. And I have enjoyed every reaction video that you have created. No matter what you watch; you being genuine joy to it. I know I am late joining Patreon; but, better late than never! Thank you!

Anonymous

If you enjoyed Djimon Hounsou as “Juba” in Gladiaor, give Amistad a go. His performance in that wrecked me.

Anonymous

Just an interesting tidbit, the actor who played Maximus' first gladiator trainer died during filming. The original ending was supposed to be him burying his wooden sword in the colosseum and instead reused the footage from before Maximus fought the guy in gold saying shadows and dust before he was murdered during the break out.

Misty Crom

Wow... been a while since I've seen this. Really is an amazing movie... a good, worthy end for Oliver Stone's career too, since he died whilst they were making it (generally, not like in a Brandon Lee way). Maybe next time you announce a movie, we should warn if you'll want tissues?

Anonymous

It's not that he was pretending to be bad at fighting, he was resigned to see his family again and wanted to die. it wasn't until Proximo made his speech before the fight that he decided to live. and the later conversation to take revenge on commadus

Adam Sandoval

This is the first reaction that made me cry even though I've seen this movie many times, but never in a reaction format. Thank you for the best reaction ever and keep up the great work.

Shyam Nair

Great reaction! Braveheart next : )

Jimmy Crackcorn

Good ear, Natalie. Sure is Hans Zimmer on both Gladiator and POTC! (Side note, I know this movie so well that the blurred PIP was sufficient for me to enjoy this reaction.)

Dave M.

Oh, I'm pathetically empathetic. I definitely cried watching you cry, Natalie. I'm sensitive, too! I wanted to hug you so, so badly. You look like you are a terrific hugger. :)

I'd give the 1960 Kubrick/Douglas Spartacus a try. It's no longer than any of the LOTR extended edition movies. And for my money it's the best movie both of them ever did.

Eric
