Natalie, another good Patreon extra for the Star Wars fans would be to watch something called Robot Chicken Star Wars. This is an animated parody of Star Wars, and has a 100% rating on rotten tomatoes. It is a series of short sketches, and is one of the funniest things you will ever see. I’d love to see you react to this as a Patreon special given that Star Wars was the thing that started this whole journey for you.

In the books, Saruman takes over the Shire and enslaves the hobbits. When Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin return they have to free the Shire. Wormtongue kills Saruman there and is then shot by hobbits. In the movies it's shown in the Mirror in Lothlorien and with South Farthing tobacco in Isengard.

Awesome to see your reaction to these clips! :) One of the best parts of buying the DVDs as they came out was watching all of the behind the scenes material. Glad you enjoyed it! As far as what to watch next, are you still planning on watching Alien (1979)? It's pretty great. I'd also recommend Blade Runner (1982) by the same director :)

Oh man, I like the LOTR special features probably just as much as the movies! There's hours and hours of them in the special edition box set, I'm sure they're out there somewhere. Whether you react to them or not, I implore you to watch them! It's basically a massive documentary of the production of the movies. There's also full cast/crew commentaries for each movie! Thanks Natalie...love your hair btw. One thing I don't know if you saw, Viggo was a last minute replacement for Aragorn and I don't know how the other actor would have done, but I think Viggo was perfect for the role and so glad he got cast.

Great bonus video! About your Shire question. Long story short, at the end of the books when Frodo and crew return to the Shire they find it has been taken over by (a much weaker) Saruman. The four hobbits have to lead a rebellion to drive him and his henchmen, including Grima out. Grima finally ends up stabbing Saruman outside of Bag End. Sam becomes mayor of Hobbiton, Pippin becomes the Thain of the shire (basically the administrator under Aragorn), and Merry becomes the master of Buckland (a somewhat autonomous region outside the borders of the Shire).

So fun! If you're interested, the "appendices" as they're called are super fascinating and VERY funny. I think New Zealanders just have the best dry sense of humor I've ever encountered!!

Now that you have seen Star Wars, you should check out Spaceballs! It is on Netflix currently. It is a Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars, and a fantastic comedy to boot. And if you ever need a Patreon only reaction, there is another SW parody called Thumb Wars. It can be found on YouTube. It is half an hour long, and is not an average parody. The characters are actor's eyes and mouths pasted onto thumbs. It is part of a series of thumb parodies. The response is often either hilarity or horror to the thumb people,

This was fun to watch! I was hoping you'd watch Elijah Wood's final day, it was such a sad and sweet thing to watch! I recommend you check that short video out for yourself when you have a chance :)

Thank you for this! Have you seen "the Truman Show"? I don't believe I've seen anyone suggest it, though it's an amazing masterpiece, with so many things going on! I'd love to see what you think of it :)

Stuart Townsend was the original actor cast for Aragorn, and I agree, he was too young. They were actually only a day or two away from filming with him, and it was only during rehearsals for principal photography when they saw how young he really looked on camera (he was 26, and I agree, he was too young). It sucked for him because he'd committed, rehearsed, trained and was beginning to film, and then he was told it wasn't working after all that. He was understandably upset, but they did ultimately get the right person. It was actually Viggo's son Henry who convinced Viggo to do it because Henry loved LOTR and Viggo didn't know anything about it beforehand.

In response to your earlier question about whether Tolkien meant LOTR to be an allegory for World War I or World War II, he actually fought in World War I, and the books were published in the mid-1950s (about a decade after World War II), but he actually didn't like allegory, because he wanted everyone to be able to relate to it, for it to be timeless. Some of his war experiences definitely colored his narrative, but he just meant the world of Middle Earth to be its own thing with no direct correlations to our world so that everyone could come to it equally and take as much from it as they bring to it. It's obviously worked, too, because newcomers such as yourself the better part of a century later can still enjoy the stories just as much as those who read it when it first came out. I'm glad you've enjoyed them as much as you obviously have, and I think Tolkien would've been happy to know his stories are still connecting with people today.

Just wanted to follow up Andy's excellent description on Tolkien and his view of allegory with a quote by Tolkien, from the forward to Fellowship of the Ring, “I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history – true or feigned– with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.”

So many great stories from the making of this movie. And since they shot basically the whole series, they spent two YEARS in New Zealand doing this. And strange you should mention getting the cast right - Viggo was actually a very last minute recast for Aragorn. Two weeks in, the original choice wasn’t working out, Viggo got the call and basically flew straight to New Zealand to take over. The cool part was his son was a HUGE Tolkien fan, part of the reason Viggo took the role and I believe is actually credited for some lore contributions. Viggo’s son also cameoed in Helm’s Deep, so father and son have that moment.

LOTRs is how I found your channel so this was heartwarming to see. Thank you, it made my day! The behind the scenes always makes me laugh and smile. If you did more, I would most certainly watch but I understand if you don't as well, haha. I saw someone else mention it but the cast did a get together over zoom a few weeks ago and it was great to see how much they all still care and support one another in their other adventures.

You should watch all the extended movie extra features. Its honestly amazing to learn how they made these movies over so many years. It even starts with the history of the Lord of the Rings and Tolkien. Edit: After watching I would say you maybe watched like 5% of the extra features and if you love seeing how movies are made they almost show you everything. I get emotional watching it just wishing I could of been apart of something this epic for so long in New Zealand. thanks

The special features on the DVD set, seriously, is every bit as enjoyable and rewarding as the film. Really amazing featurettes and behind-the-scene stories from incredibly engaging actors and crew.
