VHS has been collectible since at least the late 00’s, but primarily among horror and cult movie fans. In the initial wave of the video store era, a lot of low budget schlock was produced to line shelves, and the obscurity of those movies, along with the fact that most titles were produced specifically as rental items and were not intended as sell-through product, makes a lot of them fairly scarce. I think a bigger market will open up for the mass produced stuff that’s been lining thrift stores shelves for 20 years, but it will take a while. There are two documentaries in the vein of “Not For Resale” on the subject of VHS collecting: “Adjust Your Tracking” and “Rewind This,” both of which are pretty good and I believe are on YouTube. Dropped $60 myself recently on a tape of the Tom Skerrit movie “Fighting Back” because it’s never been released on any other format.
