Later than I hoped, but here we are!
As the picture hints, Sam is in New Orleans. Why New Orleans? Well, he has his own reasons, but mine are different--I've always wanted Sam to go there. Partially because of city itself. There really is something special about New Orleans and its connection to the dead. But there's symmetry, too--that was where I wrote the first draft of what would eventually become Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. And honestly, it's fun fitting in things I loved about the city. Like Sam, I'm not huge on Bourbon street. The city has so much to offer beyond that. There really is (or at least there was--not sure about now) a piano in Lafitte's Blacksmith shop, which is a bar. (There are several Lafitte themed bars.) My sister-in-law's friend did once sing along with the piano player there. (She did not have a gnome with her, but she would have been into it.)
Also, the lady with the miniature horse, two goats and a lamb? Also real. I was walking to an event for the annual Tennessee Williams Festival there--which happened to be a series of readings and a burlesque show, because of course it was--and I saw this woman sitting at a small cafe table. She calmly drank her cocktails, smoked her cigarette, and hung out with her menagerie. It was still daylight out and you could clearly see her and not a single person looked twice. Because New Orleans.
I really miss that city.
I do not miss hurricane season.
Anyway, hope you like it.
