So, we are really getting close to what could be a 1.0 version of Caliross. You can already play the game from beginning to end, after all. What's left is important, but not vital, and I'd like to hear from you guys on how to move on from here, what to add outside of the barebones, if I should go beyond 1.0, how to transition to my next game and so on.

I feel a little bad asking this prior to showing anything significant from TOTDC 2, but on the other hand it would be bad for me to push for a demo of the game and then sit on that perhaps for a month or two as we decide how to do things, so this will have to do.

Anyway, let's focus on Caliross. Currently, my plans for the most "barebone" 1.0 release would have to include:

  • Completing the werewolf path
  • A final quest for Golden Leaf
  • Finishing Jin's content
  • A few minor quests to populate chapter 5, possibly featuring the "human TF" a bit more
  • Some secondary scenes, maybe some QoL features and improvements to old maps

This would mean leaving out or cutting several things that were planned or hinted at, for example:

  • The magic academy
  • Nudist beach (or at least, something more for Solina)
  • Either the ship in full or at least significant content for exploring with it
  • Another area in the mountains
  • An orc village (probably also a goblin village)
  • Outcast story arc (this was originally supposed to tie with the "mana crystals smuggling" quests, actually, but I felt like I didn't establish that enough during the quests, so now it would need its own content, if I add it)
  • More Belthazar quests/encounters
  • Expanded uses for the "advanced" libraries
  • Content and/or paths for side characters Like Kairos Junior and Kito Junior
  • Other miscellaneous stuff I am probably forgetting right now

Now, this is the most important poll, so I'll start here. Should we go for a barebone release, should I go for a barebone, and then continue developing post 1.0 or should I delay 1.0 until more content makes it in? If the combined votes for the last two are greater than the support for just the barebone release, we can go for another poll later, to figure out the details.

If I keep working on Caliross, there are a lot of things to consider (like I mentioned in the past, maybe I could develop TOTDC 2 and Caliross in alternating months, for example, or swap the current process and focus mainly on TOTDC 2 as I slowly build updates for Caliross), but that's probably for another poll. There would probably have to be a popularity contest as well, to determine if everything on the list makes it or if only parts of the list will be used. Generally speaking, if you have suggestions, now it's a good time to make them known, especially ideas for the polls themselves (heck, if you think there is a flaw with this one, let me know, I might have to publish a new one).

Sorry for the long-winded explanation, hopefully you understand why it was necessary. let me know what you guys think. Development will continue as normal for at least this month and the next one, so we have plenty of time to discuss things (it's not difficult to find more things to do either, if we run out of time).

What I wonder is if we will ever get a wrap up for the kidnappers in the noble quest line, I mean you gave them a unique look and names and everything, but we never saw em again after.

mdqp

If you mean Tristan, he is part of the "mana crystals smuggling" quest, and if you finish that storyline, you can kind of guess as to why they were kidnapping Kito's son. Edit: I call the questline this way, because for a while it seems to be the main focus, but as you complete it, you realize the whole thing was much bigger than that.

mdqp

Let's see... If I remember correctly, talking to the Emperor on chapter 4 should give you the quest. Then to trigger its start you go to the slums in Tarkas at night, and you see Gaspar (you must have talked to him in the slums prior to this, too). The quest is straightforward from there. After this quest, you talk to the Emperor again in chapter 5, and he gives you the final part of the quest (you must investigate a warehouse in Rahib's docks, and then go to the bank in Tarkas).

Supplanter97

Just coming back to the game after awhile, but was curious what the "human TF" is, and were there any more quests or parts added that involve identity change/transforming into a different person?

mdqp

You can take on the appearance (and also, part of the personality) of sapient beings (so humans, elves, and so on), assuming you completed the relevant temple. You look like a copy of them, but using the power for too long has side-effects (like forgetting who you are, in the most extreme cases). The power also has other limitations (like requiring a ritual with some fluid from the target). This is currently used as an alternative solution in two quests (you can currently take on two different identities this way), and I'd like to expand that.

It’s been a while since I played (stupid lack of Mac compatibility), but the Outcasts were an absolutely huge part of the broader story early on and seems like you need to include that in the courtly intrigue of Erica becoming Empress.

Supplanter97

I remember the quest with getting into the academy as either the elf guy or human lady. Is there another quest besides that one that you were referring to, or is that the additional content to be added? ^^

mdqp

There is another quest. If you got the "elf guy" transformation, you can use his appearance during a quest for the mage guild (you infiltrate a mansion party, and they are part of his family). This quest has several solutions to being allowed entrance, so it's not surprising if you missed this one (if you played the quest).

mdqp

I'd like to, if possible. I was wondering if people were getting tired of waiting, however. This has been a long journey. I also feel like I could use moving on, eventually, so now that the main story and most of the side stories are completed, it's a good time to figure out how most of you guys feel about the game, and then decide how to handle the transition between Caliross and the next game.

Supplanter97

Is that the same mansion party as the one with the Zanti family member and the Lion in the hall, or a different mansion party lol?

mdqp

A different one. XD There is actually one more party you throw yourself, if you become a noble. XD XD XD

Supplanter97

So is it that one for after you become a noble? You get to become him again for your own party? ^^

Regardless of the poll, if you feel burned out on Caliross, maybe it’s time to move on to TOTDC 2. Although I’m super biased because turning Celeste into a buxom blonde airhead is a core feature you’ve discussed and something I’ve wanted since like 2014!

Anonymous

For my part, I'm eager to see you working on TotDC2. Not to say that I don't love Caliross or want to see more content for it because I absolutely do on both counts. But the original TotDC is one of my favorite erotica games of all time, which is saying something considering how terrible RAGS is as a format. It's the reason I started backing you in the first place, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how you'll approach the setting with more experience under your belt.

mdqp

Ah, no, sorry, I meant there is one party where you can transform into the guy (tied to the mage guild) and another party you throw yourself (which, if we add the other party you originally mentioned, totals to 3 parties in the game... So far XD).

Supplanter97

Ah gotcha! How do you get to that party then? Anything specific you need to do to get to that point to be him for the party?

mdqp

I am not really burned out, not yet at least, but I am at the point where there is more friction to progress, simply because I wrote so much already. Celeste having optional bigger bust and blonde hair is nice. XD I wonder how much I can implement in the actual gameplay as far as being an airhead goes (there is always a worry about the amount of work for such a thing). We'll definitely have a few paths featuring that, one way or the other, though.

mdqp

Blessed be TOTDC. I sure hope the sequel will be worth it for the fans. It's hard to say how good it will be compared to the original, but I am confident I can make it fun and interesting, at least. I am always more worried about the visuals/art, rather than the game itself, since there are always budget limitations to consider, and I can't really do much on that front. There are never enough commissions in a month. XD

mdqp

You can check the walkthrough (the quest is named "Cloak and Dagger"): https://docs.google.com/document/d/16XOUX_KXz800cLQ7VledpazkEZjviWRPpXzR3iswfmE/edit#heading=h.vb7r1bz0xusy This should have all the minute details (and do let me know if something is missing).

Supplanter97

Thanks! Last thing, but are there plans to make those TFs and whatnot a bigger/side part of the game, such as playing as essentially a new character for some time, or having the abilities in combat, or something involving being someone for a long period of time?

mdqp

Not for a long time (outside of "bad ends" maybe). I could possibly use these forms in combat, but I am not sure (creating a new character for that always involves some extra work).

Supplanter97

Yeah, what just curious since the idea of it being a playable bad end of sorts, or being some setup where she manages to come back from fully becoming someone else, sorta it's own big side quest.

Do you believe it to be possible to finish the memory room? Or update the walktrough. Because even with all the information you already provided, which i'm very grateful, there are still many pictures were i have no idea where they happen in-game. Sure many you can find out just by trying knew stuff, but that's just a very slow way of doing this. While i would like more content in general, i would really like if there was an easier way to access all the content that's already available. Of course if it is too much work i understand. You are doing a great job with this game anyway and i'm sure the new game will be just as good.

Anonymous

Based off of popular opinion, I think airhead Celeste would get way more play throughs than original Celeste! Although it might be hard for her to find the motivation to advance the plot XD

mdqp

Updating the walkthrough is certainly possible, although of course while I write the walkthrough or the guide to the H-scenes, I can't add more content to the game, so it's a balancing act. The memory room would take too much time, so it's sadly not going to be completed. It's unfortunate because it would have been easy if I planned for it from the start, but it's too much of a time sink to implement after the fact.

Anonymous

Yeah, i thought as much, there are just too many scenes and variables. I completely understand. But i'm glad you'll still update the walktrough. Thanks for answering my question.

Dewey

Honestly, I would love to see even the 'bare bones release'. as this game is chock full of content. However, I'd like to put my vote to expanding after the 1.0 barebones release as there are so many other unexplored and finished paths that I think could be finished up and enjoyed. Dropping the Memory room and the Walk-Through I think would be perfectly fine as long as hints or directions a la the quest log are good enough that most players can decide how they want to handle things. The Current walk Through is enough right now at least that I've not updated mine unless things are particularly different between iterations and I just want to run straight down a specific path.

mdqp

Right now it seems like most people want more content for the 1.0. It's still early to be sure, so we'll see how the poll develops. The memory room is definitely not in the plans. I think the walkthrough will get its updates, and hopefully I find the time to update the H-scenes list a bit more (that one is less vital, though).

Anonymous

As someone who has been supporting off and on for a whole now I'm pretty sure I would prefer to see more content for 1.0's release. My first run in with your work was Tales of the Drunken Cowboy which I adored despite RAGS being... rough, but I've really come to enjoy Caliross.

mdqp

I am a bit worried when it comes to discussing the end of the game (it's my first time doing it after I got my Patreon), so I am happy to hear from "old time" fans. People's trust in me is very important for this kind of stuff, after all.

Puddles

Welcome to Hotel Caliross, you can neeever leave...

Dewey

The Walk-through can definitely come after everything else. It's not mission critical after all. You make it fairly clear already what needs to happen for most quests as long as people read. The game really does have a lot that I'd like to see finished and even expanded a little since some things just stop and it feels weird the way they just hard stop.

mdqp

Speaking of which, could you let me know which parts of the game stop too suddenly, in your opinion? You never know, it might be something I forgot or I might agree and decide to add something to it anyway.

Anonymous

Honestly I feel the game is large enough as it is, The only thing I’m really interesting is the outcast storyline. For such a small encounter it seemed tied into things in a much larger way then what is shown.

mdqp

I'll probably have a poll next along the lines of "what should be added/prioritized for 1.0?", so I can get a better picture on details like this. I was hoping more people would reply by now, but I can't really expect everyone to partecipate, I guess.
