It's that time again: Time for another episode of Retronauts Radio. This time I'm joined by Jack Menhorn from Boss Key Studios; he brings to this discussion of classic video game music the insight of someone who actually works with video game music for a living! And there's lots of great stuff to explore this month, with new soundtrack releases for Castlevania III, Contra III, Shovel Knight, Galaxy Force II, and Thunder Blade. Some really great stuff here — enjoy!

Just started listening, and within three minutes Jazz Jackrabbit comes up. I would love to listen to a Jazz Jackrabbit episode of Retronauts, the second game is one of my childhood favourites, and the music is so, so good.

We already have separate numbering for Retronauts Micro, which is bad enough. Having three or four different numerations for our podcasts would be a disastrous mess. Also, counting these under the standard numeration means that if we for some reason decide not to keep doing Radio (or East) episodes, we can simply fold whatever replaces them into the lineup without having to do start over with ANOTHER new set of episode numbers.

'Riddle' cuts off abruptly at 32:45 or so.

yeah definitely hearing some oddities with the music editing in this version

Patreon has been really difficult with uploads lately (this episode took me an hour to post). Maybe the file was corrupted? I've re-upped it, so hopefully that fixes the issue.

Great stuff. Thank you for shining a light on Galaxy Force II, maybe my favorite FM OST. Personally, I'd love to hear a Jazz Fusion focused episode. I loved your Prog episode. Thanks again for all you do!

Just want to say that while I love all the Retronauts content, these Radio episodes are what made me subscribe. Keep up the good work!

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, especially since my orders of both Mondo's Castlevania III & Data Disc's Galaxy Force II arrived the week before I listened. I had owned the 2007 release of the Galaxy Force II/Thunderblade OST, so I was wondering if this was going to be mastered from the 10-year old CD-master of that release. But after asking Data Discs directly (via Twitter DM), they confirmed that the LP release was indeed a new remastering "from scratch & not a CD rip", which made it all the more essential to pick up to add to my collection. Jeremy, you did a job on sharing your take on the bass-slapping and fusion jazz elements from the OST. I share your feelings entirely. Where our opinions deviate a bit is with the LP art from the Mondo release of Castlevania III: Dracula's curse. I was surprised that you didn't like it, but respect that it may not be for everybody. However, I would like to express why I actually DO like the art. I think it was brilliant, because it shows (in static art) the gameplay ability of the player to be able to "transform" into 4 different characters. It was because of this why I felt choosing artist Sachin Teng to do it was brilliant, since he specializes in cross-sectioned pieces, and deconstructed elements - integrating Grant, Sypha, Trevor & Alucard all into one shared brain (possibly the player's even). It makes for a great piece to hang if one were so inclined to do so in a powder room or above a toilet, and quite possibly scare the living dark matter out of someone's behind.

I second that. Retronauts Radio is really what pushed me over the edge to becoming a Patreon backer for the show, after having listened since the very beginning.
