Hi everyone, and apologies for the late post on this one. I miscalculated how long this new Retronauts Radio episode would take to pull together. But here were are. Just remember: Delays are temporary... something something forever. Yeah.

I decided to try a slightly different approach to this episode. Rather than interjecting commentary between each track, I've simply grouped music by album, picking multiple key selections per album and segueing directly from one track to the next. I am curious to hear your opinions on this approach! There's always room for improvement. I think it works pretty well, although it doesn't quite hit the perfect balance between excessive per-track commentary and too little commentary.

This episode covers the following releases:

  • Bomberman
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Phantasy Star
  • Sonic Spinball
  • Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition
  • Double Dragon I & II
  • Totakeke Music - Instrumental Selection
  • Symphonic Suite: Dragon Quest III
  • Exposure (Robert Fripp)
  • Axiom Verge 2
  • Esperwave
  • Alpha

I've really done my best to cover the full gamut of what "classic game music" means here. While around half of this episode consists of straightforward releases of classic soundtracks, it also includes works rearranged by the original artist, fan covers, and a new game rendered in a retro style with plenty of homages to timeless works. There's also a 1979 rock album reissue, because it's my podcast and I'm allowed, as well as an outlandish bonus item at the very end.

Enjoy, have a great new year, and see you in 2023! Thanks for your support this year, and please look forward to more great game commentary (and game music) in the coming year.

Edits by me (Jeremy Parish); cover art by John Pading.

This was one of my favorite types of episodes already, but the new format puts it over the top! Also, I never realized how many BANGERS are on the Sonic Spinball soundtrack. This led to me playing the game again, which I had written off long ago, and it's not half bad either!

It was great how each installment of the Super Bomberman series brought with it a new rendition of the Stage 1 theme, which was completely bonkers by the time it got the fifth volume.
