When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles struck gold at the start of the '90s, everyone wanted the piece of the action. That included British developer Rare, who created a similar group of green heroes to capitalize on Turtlemania: the Battletoads. Though it's mostly remembered for a singular stage within the first game, and only lasted a few short years, the Battletoads series attracted enough nostalgia to receive a brand-new release 26 years after the last one. But is there any appeal for this IP outside of sheer irony? On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Matt McMuscles, and Stuart Gipp as the crew clings to their speeder bikes and zooms through a history of Battletoads. It'll be mad, bad, and crazy!

Great to hear Matt on the podcast.

The biggest problem with level 3 of Battletoads is that once you finally beat it you still have to play the rest of Battletoads.

The co-op mode has a game breaking glitch that makes it impossible to complete. In the level where you ride the wheel on the wall, something with the second players controls is messed up to where they will always die immediately, leading to a game over with no way to get past it. I feel bad for Bob if he ever has to watch the cartoon for his other podcast. It's one of the worst things I've ever seen. I don't know why I saw it on tv, but I swear I did, on some Fox Kids labor day Monday where they showed random crap or something. I can find no evidence it ever aired anywhere but I know I saw it way before YouTube was a thing, at my Grandpa's house who only had over the air antenna.

For my 13ty bday, July 11, 1993, my dad took me to Toys R Us and let me pick ANY game I wanted and I narrowed it down to Bubsy and Battlemaniacs. I chose Battlemaniacs... I am now 41 and have beaten the turbo tunnel once. Talk about a no win scenario with those picks though

Whoa! Matt on Retronauts!

James Krusling

I didn’t play this till years after it came out…also have only beaten the turbo tunnel once ever. Oy lol

I think the best Battletoads game is Battletoads and Double Dragon. I've only really played the Genesis version, but it seemed the most fair in terms of its design. Even the turbo tunnel in that game is a bit slower paced and can be mastered after a couple attempts. And the arcade game is awesome, of course, but only when you don't have to spend all of your allowance to make it to the second level. I remember being blown away by how detailed the art was and of course, love the over the top violence.

I'll always remember the pause screen theme. Everything else, I'm not too fond of.

I beat Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and that games ending is a wall of text too! It's like two sentences. That's the weakest bullshit ever. I never heard the Japanese version was easier before this podcast, I hope it's included in the Rare Replay compilation

Even with save state, rewind, and the helping hand of God, I could not complete Battletoads (NES) on Rare Replay. I blame input delay for my lack of achievement.

What's even weirder about the reboot comic is that it was written by Simon Furman of Transformers fame.
