Now that Retronauts has transitioned to deep dives of single titles over the past few years, it's about time to focus on a genre we rarely touch: adventure games. That said, this marks the beginning of a limited series where I (Bob) will be covering the entire LucasArts adventure library—one game per episode—hopefully with new and/or rare guests.

Since I'm not covering these games in any particular order, there's no better place to start than The Secret of Monkey Island, the release that would define LucasArts' house style for its remaining decade of adventure game output. And there's no better guest than Monkey Island superfan Nina Matsumoto (of FanGamer and Sparks fame), someone who's loved the series since 1990 and even created the cover art for Ron Gilbert's latest adventure game, Thimbleweed Park! So join us as we enter the world of corrosive grog, rubber chickens with pulleys in the middle, and insult sword fighting and jump back in time nearly 30 years to explore a game that launched a much-beloved series.

Curse of Monkey Island was also my first in the series, and although I can recognize the Gilbert games are better designed, when I think of Monkey Island, I think of the style of Curse. I am really excited for this podcast series! Also, regarding Sierra, my view toward them has softened due to the great videos of PushingUpRoses. I still prefer the Lucas Arts approach, but I've now played through King's Quest IV with generally positive experiences overall (though 1-3 were the enhanced AGD versions without the parser).

Hear! Hear! I I think if you were to ask the designers, they would freely admit that there were some bad design decisions-- Space Quest 2 is the worst offender in my experience-- but it was a fledgling genre and they were feeling out the rules as they went along. I agree that Lucas Arts adventures have aged better, but they had a foundation laid by Sierra and is contemporaries to build on.

I will also back up Curse - I played it first and it’s still my favorite of the Monkey Islands. That said, like Bob I also “speedrun” Maniac Mansion because I’ve memorized the whole damn game. But getting to Secret, this was the first point and click my wife went through together and it was a delightful experience. One day we will finish 2!

Ah, you two do well together. Great show - I also read Ender’s Game in school and loved it to death (incredibly less so now that Card is revealed to be such a piece of shit). Great overview of the game - I think it is probably my favorite adventure game ever, though it’s not without its problems. That theme song though!

I would kill to go into endless discourse on Sierra’s adventure games. They are endlessly problematic in design and actively hate the player sometimes, but I still have a very soft spot for them. I’ve played nearly every one and they were super formative and did have their moments (I’ll never forget the Batmobile showing up in KQ2).

Great episode! Now I eagerly await Loom...

I've been wanting to play this series for a long time. Does anyone have experience with the version on PS3? I see it available on the PSN, and sometimes it goes on sale. Worth getting? Or is it weird using the controller?

I should've added: though I first played it in 1990, I didn't actually finish it until some time after we got the CD version in 1992. No way could I beat it on the IBM XT, especially with such limited reading and comprehension skills. Waaay too young for that game. Also, a correction for myself: I went from NES to PS2, not PS1. No idea why I said PS1. Probably just nervous.

This was an incredible listen. My experience of The Secret of Monkey Island was through a floppy disk version on an Apple Quadra that was my mom's business computer but I snuck in a solid hour per night. That being said, it took me months to even get on the ship to Monkey Island. I actually called a paid tip line to figure out how to find the Swordmaster….
