We're living in the era of the gig economy, and now our apartments are hotels, our cars are taxis, and we even have to make Marios ourselves. But that's okay, because Nintendo's Super Mario Maker series has thrived over the past half-decade as not only a celebration of Mario's 2D legacy, but an amazing toolset that lets budding creators put together levels that aren't even in the wildest dreams of Nintendo's top craftsmen. On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Chris Kohler, and Ray Barnholt as the crew explores the finer points of Mario do-it-yourself-ery.

Let's not forget the Make My Mario series on Sega CD.

Heh heh. Yea ... there are a ton of 1-1 levels up there. BUT.... while we’ve all done world 1-1 a million times by just keep going right. But what if you had to do world 1-1 while you always have to go left? T6X-47H-WVG

Great episode! I couldn't get into the first game as I'm not much of a 2D Mario player (I'm very bad at them) but SMM2's story mode has really got me into playing 2D Mario in a big way and now I'm cheesing my way through SMB3 on the Switch Online version using the save states and rewind function (Sorry, I'm 47 and have old fingers) Also, here's a secret bonus opinion hidden in a ? block; I really like the artwork for this one...

Thank you for giving me flashbacks to Nash constantly yelling at everyone to check him out in Lunar.

I remember making an airship level in Mario Maker 1 that I thought wasn't too hard but after checking the stats a few days later I saw that the clear rate was <10% so I was worried I made it much harder than I intended. Then another day or two passes and I get the first comment and it was something like "Good level but it was way too easy". That's Mario making in a nutshell.

I was one of those people who jumped off the cliff the first time.

Regarding the level ranking/categories, I believe they follow Reddit rules - New and Popular are rather evident, but Hot is likely a blending of the two. As quality levels are also more easy to locate in this iteration of the game, some of the most interesting ones I've noted are those themed as Zelda or Metroid. Zelda levels generally have some puzzles and allude to the source material (Forest Temple, etc), whereas Metroid inspired levels attempt ability gated progression through a series of puzzle-box areas.

Great episode for me, it convinced I do want to get the 3DS version for me and the kids.
