It's that time of the year again: when listeners brave the harsh climates, territorial wolves, and malfunctioning home security devices for a chance to visit the Retronauts Holiday Cabin in parts unknown. And, just like in past years, we'll be using this holiday getaway as a good excuse to discuss a video game-related Christmas cartoon. For 2018, we set our sights on the long-running Pokemon cartoon's first Xmas adventure: "Holiday Hi-Jynx." Along with featuring perhaps the most controversial Pokemon, this episode carries a pretty interesting history--one that goes back to the anime series' lowest moment ever. So grab yourself a warm cup of whatever, find a corner to hide away from your family, and join us for this very Japanese tour of the holiday season.

I suppose a certain guest finally got done in by the wolves this year.

They do tell children in Japan that Santa will bring gifts to good kids, but I don't think it's as heavily enforced. About the number of reindeer: in Japan, Santa is commonly depicted with just one or two reindeer, and if there are two (or more), they often all have red noses. Santa's other reindeer aren't common knowledge, because "The Night Before Christmas" isn't a thing in Japan (I imagine it's hard to translate and make it rhyme nearly as well...) and while there is an official Japanese version of the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," it doesn't include the intro naming all the reindeer, and it's simply called "The Red-Nosed Reindeer," no name mentioned. It just says "everyone laughed at him," not indicating that "everyone" refers to other reindeer. And since the red-nosed reindeer isn't named, I guess they decided Santa only uses reindeer with red noses, of which there are many.

It was a good episode, but I missed the many guests from years past. Just having Bob and Hank made it feel like one of their animation podcasts rather than a Retronauts. Having Ray or Chris on would have made it feel a little more special. Even Jeremy wasn't able to skype in to discuss it?

Will be saving this one for my Tuesday morning commute to parent's home as has become tradition over the past few years.

I seem to remember Bob saying a year or so ago that he was running out of holiday specials based on or related to video games. In order to stave off that harsh reality for another year, I will mention the existence of Elf Bowling: The Movie. Apparently it was pretty rancid, too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elf_Bowling_the_Movie:_The_Great_North_Pole_Elf_Strike

Really not in the realm of retro yet but the Pac-Man and Ghostly Adventures show had a Christmas special. It's been on Netflix 2015 and I my kids have watched it many, many times.

The blackface issue is as yet unresolved here in Japan but I feel like the push against it is rising. A comedian who made it big imitating Obama quit using makeup because he heard it upset people, and a couple years ago an activist/writer living in Yokohama managed to create a stir when a blackface act was advertised on a Fuji TV special, so much so that the special was cancelled. On the other hand, director Takeshi Kitano remains a popular TV personality who has zero qualms about wearing blackface whenever he feels like it.

I remember watching a Sasuke like eight years ago where a comedian's entire schtick was to dressed up as a Polynesian in Blackface. I was all WTF, and thankfully years on he's gone into obscurity.

I prefer the Pokemon Season 3 soundtrack to the season 1.

The reason for the Spain thing in the Sinter Klaus tradition is that the parts of the Low Countries were part of the Spanish Empire for about 150 years.
