The latest chapter in our Final Fantasy deep-dive series is here, and it... isn't Final Fantasy. Instead, we're going in-depth on Final Fantasy's step-sibling, Chrono Trigger. Kat Bailey and Chris Kohler join us to travel back and forth through time—yeah, it's another one of those "high concept" episodes. And a heck of a conversation, in my opinion.

Please enjoy, and thank you as always for supporting Retronauts!

"it's very redundant, but I believe in what I just said." And that's why Bob always makes me laugh.

Does anyone have a link to the Chrono Trigger press conference that Koehler mentioned?

I know people like to hate on it (and I understand it despite not agreeing with it), Blue Dragon always struck me as the true successor to Chrono Trigger despite only getting two of the three dream team people back. It plays a lot more like a traditional paired down Final Fantasy with a simple job system, but it does carry over that combination of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest narrative elements that I just adore. If you passed on Blue Dragon just because you heard it was a JRPG for babies, I'd really recommend it. It's definitely a game made for kids (which just means a game made for everyone), but it's a lot of fun and has a lot of heart. It's not Chrono Trigger, but I feel it carries on the legacy better than Chrono Cross did.

Loved the podcast! Quick question: you referred to a Mitsuda album that revisited songs from Chrono Trigger and Chrono Trigger. What would be the album’s title?

Is it the 20th Anniversary arranged album? <a href="http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/harukanaru/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/harukanaru/</a> Even if it's the wrong album, Laura Shigihara has a unique version of Schala's theme that is worth checking out: <a href="https://youtu.be/cLKPPy_tYvI" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/cLKPPy_tYvI</a>

Great episode! I really wish Chris didn't roll over everyone in his enthusiasm. There was a couple points where he just ran roughshod over Kat. Speaking of, I really appreciated Kat's opinion, untainted by nostalgia.

I'm late but I wanted to say the same thing: it was great to have a more recent first impression on the episode.

I'm sure you all hate seeing this sort of comment, but this was one of those episodes which felt like it could absolutely have a part two (and I don't mean an episode about the sequels, which I am excited for). There's so much more to say and remember about this amazing game.

Yup, I could've listened to more. I'll take a four-hour episode no problem! Particularly the history and the insights about the game's place in time were very interesting. I loved the game as an experience, but when I played the game through (around 2001 maybe) I felt the combat and overall balance wasn't too exciting. Sure you had all these team-up moves but there wasn't really much need to manage them carefully or make interesting decisions in or between battles. I don't know, Kat in particular calling it challenging in just the right way, you're slowly making me think that maybe my recollection/opinion is off. Maaaaybe I'll revisit CT sooner than later..
