So… it's not actually our intent to turn Retronauts Micro into a series focused exclusively on movies and other properties that inspired games, with sidebar segments on the games themselves. It's just a coincidence that the past few episodes have gone that direction. This week's Micro was going to be an interview with WayForward about the making of The Mummy Demastered (now that it's had some design quirks patched out)… and that was going to focus pretty much exclusively on the game, because who really wants to talk about the movie it's loosely based on? But as I sat down to edit the show this morning, I discovered that interview ended up being nearly an hour and a half long! That is… not a Micro. I mean, we've already stretched the meaning of the word with these Micro episodes that run nearly an hour as it is, but there have to be some limits, my god.

Yes, so, you can look forward to that Mummy Demastered interview in the near future — maybe as soon as Monday, who knows! In the meantime, here is an episode about a kid-classic ’80s property that resulted in some pretty entertaining video games. And man, does this conversation make me want to sit down and start drawing maps of The Goonies II… And I offer my pledge as a Goonie that my next Micro will not be about a TV show or movie, honest. — JP

Episode description: Continuing our exploration of media properties that inspired classic games (and, also, the games they inspired), Jeremy, Ben, and Chris climb down the Fratelli's fireplace to hunt for the ancient treasure known as The Goonies.

I first saw The Goonies on television as a child with the octopus scene. When we finally bought the VHS, I was always confused why the octopus scene I thought was so cool as a 4-year-old was no longer there. I still haven't seen it since, and everybody says it's terrible. I don't want to rewatch it just in case it is really bad. I'll just keep my memories of cool octopus fights to myself.

Well.. One angle could perhaps be to focus an episode on movies that shaped a lot of games and how each of those legacies played out? Like how Laputa was mined for JRPG's, how Aliens became every sci-fi shooter, the long tails of Terminator, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, etc. I think game developers are only now starting to tentatively move away from James Cameron and Ridley Scott and it only took some 30 years.

We tried that approach; it didn't work; c'est la vie. We publish 7 or 8 episodes a month in a variety of formats, and I feel there's room within that lineup for occasional forays into tangential topics. — JP
