Kevin: When it comes to game music, we live in an age of riches. You can stumble across original soundtracks online, see live performances of covers in just about any genre you can think of, and handily find other performances online. Back in the mid-1980s, however, these soundtracks were just coming into their own, which in turn gave rise to an incredibly curious trend in Japan: the game company house band. These essentially served as a way for companies to promote their own games with flashy arrangements of their own music, oftentimes performed by the very people who had composed them in the first place. Joining me to talk about bands from the likes of Sega, Falcom, Data East and more are Diamond Feit and Brian Clark, showcasing their knowledge, enthusiasm, and excitement for the topic.  Sit back with a nice pair of headphones and relax as Karnov comes to town with a musical ride through a fascinating moment in time.

Hi, it's me, the local Japanese dating sim historian and all around galge nerd! I'm here to be That Guy and confirm that Graduation (otherwise known natively as "Sotsugyou") was indeed a fairly big deal in early 90s Japanese game history! The original Graduation is a seminal entry in the character raising sim genre. Think Princess Maker for those of you old enough to remember, but instead of raising a daughter, you're a teacher looking after a handful of students as you try to get them to graduation in one piece by managing their schedules, studying materials, etc. It made a pretty big splash on Japanese PCs at the time and got ported to plenty of consoles and you can draw a fairly straight line from it to Konami's Tokimeki Memorial. While it's not otherwise a dating sim, in terms of mechanics and structure, early games in that genre owe a distinct debt to it. The second game even got localized as plain old Graduation for Windows by way of Tokyopop's short lived game publishing label, Mixx Games, complete with a low rent English dub that even has Alex Borstein playing one of the girls in basically her exact Lois Griffin voice. Pretty wild stuff!

I really enjoyed this episode. I had no idea video game house bands even existed, so thank you for making an interesting and compelling episode about something that was obscure to me.
