Do you ever find yourself saying something like: I can't come this time, but next time I'll help you plan it!  

These consolation commitments are a result of us feeling guilty when we can't say yes to someone when they ask for something.  

Because we feel guilty, we often feel like we need to "make up for it", by not only doing what they wanted us to do this time, but doing more than that to make up for the fact that we didn't.  

This can eat up a lot of our time and energy, which is a problem, because if we're already so busy that we can't do this thing now, the odds that we're going to have even more time and energy in the future are probably not great.  So, it can help to remember that your time and energy are yours. And you don't owe them to anyone else. 

When someone asks you for a favour, you can say no. 

And, "no," is a complete sentence.
