This video covers how the tuning of the Shamisen works in much more detail, and takes it to a more “pro” level by adding new information and tuning techniques.

Let’s practice to tune to the Honchoshi, Niagari, and Sansagari even if you change the basic note. In the lesson, we also explain the tips to tune the notes without using a tuner (just by ear and a feel), so you can improve your tuning skill to the next level!

基本の音を変えても本調子、二上り、三下りに合わせられるように練習しましょう。

Vocabulary List

Tuning - to adjust the pitch of the Shamisen

Honchoshi - the tuning with the first string in C, the second string in F, and the third string in C. The base note on the first string can be other notes than C, but the balance between the three strings remains the same

Niagari - the tuning with the first string in C, the second string in G, and the third string in C. The base note on the first string can be other notes than C, but the balance between the three strings remains the same

Sansagari - the tuning with the first string in C, the second string in F, and the third string in B flat. The base note on the first string can be other notes than C, but the balance between the three strings remains the same

Sawari - the section on the upper part of the shamisen neck just below the kami-goma (the 1st string) that is raised or lowered in order to create a buzzing noise that brings out the true Tsugaru sound. Tsugaru Shamisen has a screw called Azuma Zawari (Sawari). Note: some cheaper Tsugaru Shamisen may not have a Sawari

調弦 - 三味線の音程を調整すること

本調子 -  一の糸をドにしたときに、二の糸がファ、三の糸がドになる調弦。一の糸をド以外にすることもあるが、三本の音の関係は変わらない

二上り - 一の糸をドにしたときに、二の糸がソ、三の糸がドになる調弦。一の糸をド以外にすることもあるが、三本の音の関係は変わらない

三下り - 一の糸をドにしたときに、二の糸がファ、三の糸がシ♭になる調弦。一の糸をド以外にすることもあるが、三本の音の関係は変わらない

サワリ - 三味線の棹の上部裏側に付いているネジのこと。サワリを使うと「ビーン」という三味線独特の音の響きを追加させることができる
