Silas gripped the silver collar around his neck. It went off like a taizer shocking him all over his body. A smirk spread across his face as blood dribbled between his lips, and the collar ramped up its shock. He wasn’t a masochist, but the pain felt nice since he knew it had a purpose. It gave him something like a workout high. Elizabeth stared at him like a deer caught in the headlights of his old F150 instead of a clever wolf. He pulled, and more magical lightning blasted through his body, all for a purpose.

Something clever passed through his mind, but it came out in a gurgle. That was the problem with being electrocuted; he couldn’t do much more than shake and deal with it. His body tingled, but the pain was nothing compared to the fence. The shock brought flashbacks of that pain, and he felt for what he needed.

Old grudges couldn’t be let go; they marked him, leaving gaping holes in the foundation of his early new life. He would never forget Merika, the boy and girl who took his friend away, or the father and daughter who put a slave collar on him. He gripped it and pulled, feeling the shock intensify. He hated them, his weakness, and her betrayal, but he was going to change it and grow stronger until they no longer mattered. Hate was just a twisted form of love, but apathy and sheer indifference would be the death of his bond with them.

New Skills

Shock Resistance: Beginner 0% - Reduce damage taken from shock.

Initiate Threshold – Be struck by a lightning spell and survive – Complete

Wrath: Beginner 0% - Gain instances of Power when an anger-based skill activates.

Initiate Threshold – Slay 100 enemies in anger.

“Why would you do that to yourself?” Elizabeth said.

“It's our last day before the outbreak, and I’m still rank 1. So this is my chance to get all the skills I can. Do you have the shock resistance skill?” Silas asked.

“No, my father wouldn’t torture me until I got it,” Elizabeth said.

Silas shook his head. It sounded like her father had a large hand in her early development. Elizabeth might be a rank 2, but that didn’t make her strong. She could probably kill him, but that didn’t mean much; there were plenty who could kill him. So what would happen when he was rank 2?

If he managed to build a great foundation of powerful skills and skill trees, then hardly anyone would be a match for him. Most skills were learned in the first rank, after all. Once he reached his next rank, skill gains would dry up, leaving him with what he already had. Sure, some could be gained in the second rank, but that number dwindled as he reached rank 3. Finally, by rank 4, he would have what he had.

“What would you do if you had to fight an enemy with shock spells?” Silas asked.

“I would run away or use an insulation spell. Skills are great but not getting them isn’t the end of the world. Where skills fail, enchantments, items, and spells prevail. Trying to get every skill instead of ranking up will stunt your growth.” Elizabeth said.

Silas thumped the collar on his neck. “Ranking up with this thing on isn’t an option,” Silas said as a jolt ran through him. It helped him focus on the hate he felt.

His goal was simple; he needed a rage skill to help him rank up wrath. Then again, maybe he was going about it all wrong. While the power buff would be great, he didn’t need it. No, he needed to get a feel for the sins and use them. He could kill 100 enemies in anger; his enemies deserved his anger. It was ok to feel anger, lust, greed, slothfulness, envy, pride, and hunger. Being powerful enough to right the wrongs of the past, search out his brother and sister, and live in the new world was something he hungered for. Silas knew he wasn’t wrong to want to be better than the others of his rank.

“I’m sorry; we didn’t know you were human under your monster body.”

Silas narrowed his eyes. The change in topic felt jarring, and he didn’t like where it would inevitably lead to. “You seem friendly for someone who wants to throw me to a jury of civilians for rape.”

“Father said they weren’t real; none of them are anything more than puppets. If you didn’t use them, they would be used against us by the dungeon.” Elizabeth said.

He closed his eyes and counted to 5. He had already told Elizabeth that, but it had to come from her father before she would listen.

“I didn’t think that mattered to you. You wanted to serve me up to people who couldn’t understand my motives. They would have condemned me without a chance to defend myself.” Silas said.

“I still want to,” Elizabeth said.

Silas froze at her admittance. Why did he have to end up with someone like her? Her father was a perfectly morally bankrupt alchemist. So how did his half-wolf monster daughter end up with a conscience? If he was to survive, he had to snip loose ends. That was the only way. But first, he had to know why.

“What’s stopping you?” Silas asked.

“You’re my father’s responsibility. A slave’s actions are the responsibility of the master, and while you wear that collar, I won’t bring this matter to court.”

“Are you blackmailing me?”

“You’re getting something in return; we’ll help you to the best of our abilities. But you can’t do things like this anymore. I talked it over with father, and it's not acceptable.”

“If I refuse, what will you kill me?”

“No, we’ll free you and tip off the local paladins of Chastity. Once they become aware of your crimes, my father’s activities won’t matter.” Elizabeth sighed. “I thought you were a good person before this. Maybe we could have had something together. You brought this on yourself; you’re evil.”

Silas let his serene mind speak for him. He had to wonder what would happen when his charisma reached A-.

“What rank charisma do you have?” Silas asked.

“It won’t work. I’m a rank above you, and at rank 2, stat number totals aren’t as important as effectiveness. When initiate skills start reaching apprentice rank, effectiveness skyrockets.” Elizabeth said.

Silas shot a charm at her, and the collar shocked him. He closed his eyes in pain before a heavy blow rammed his head, knocking him into a nearby wall.

“I see it can detect skills and uses precise shocks to stop my mana flow.”

“If evil exists in the world, then it's you. The world will be safer with a monster like you under our control.” Elizabeth said.

“So, you’re finally dropping the pretenses, alright then, how about this. My summons and I won’t fight the dungeon. Free me, or you can die.”

She shook her head. “We’ll be fine; my father is rank three, and you’re an untrained summoner with higher-than-average charisma. You and your summons weren’t expected to contribute much. You can fight or die alone; we’ll find what we need to pay off our debts here.” She sighed. “Don’t you get it with my father here; the dungeon will send rank 2 monsters out on the first floor.”

The cold increased, and masks were finally dropped.
