Look, we're lifelong Mario-heads, so we were curious to see the most popular movie in the world right now. We discuss some of the funnier culture-war takes that have greeted THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE (2023) during its right to the top of the box office, and perhaps even generate a few more of our own.

From everything I saw from the initial announcement of Chris Pratt the complaints weren't centred on him being conservative or not being diverse enough casting. It was about it being a strange and awkward casting choice that was obviously just name recognition. Game streams from the first nintendo direct that announced it had highlights of reactions to the video of Miyamoto announcing it "He's so cool." It's good for a laugh watching it. It spread from there where it changed from a general mocking of most of the cast choices to just Pratt as every comment he made and trailer released made it seem more easy to mock.

“Where are the right-wing takes on the blue shell being a socialist punishment of the rich?” I don’t know, man. I think we might be missing the mark when the enemy in our imagination is not the same as the enemy in the real world. Even they might not find that a good way to spend their time. I’d be wary of a posture that gives opposition primacy over understanding. That’s what you see on cable news, where hosts animate their audiences by demonizing a version of their enemy that exists mostly in their imagination. Will and Luke are some of the most precise analyzers of cultural and political moments, but I’m finding these episodes on whatever’s topping the box office to be some of their weakest. It’s not that insightful to treat every cultural artifact like a word find. Which character is the Hillary? Which is the not-left-not-right-but-forward Andrew Yang character? Who’s more of an incel-type, Luigi or the glowing blue nihilistic kid? I felt this way about their takes on The Batman—there are like 50 things more interesting to talk about than whether Battinson is an Obama Dem or whatever. Anyway, I still love the show, but the boys are at their best when they’re taking the subject matter more seriously, where the politics of a movie really does have some weight, like the fantastic episodes on You’ve Got Mail or American Beauty—not to mention pretty much every documentary they’ve ever covered. Or, where there’s an auteur behind the camera with a vision worthy of being reckoned with, for better or for worse, like On the Waterfront or Taxi Driver. So I’ll be listening to the episode on Silence—which I think is safe to assume will be excellent—but probably skipping out if they decide to cover Minions 4 or something. I don’t know, maybe I’m being too hard on them and they know this project can get silly sometimes? If so, I’d appreciate it if they were more explicit about that so I don’t have to wonder if they’ve pilled themselves on their own take-generator.
