I am really impressed with the showing for When the Wind Blows. I am surprised by how many people know about the film. For those who do not know what this movie is I will reuse my explainer from last time I floated it. It’s an animated feature about an old English couple suffering the aftermath of a nuclear war and succumbing to radiation poisoning. I find this movies messages really resonates with the current attitudes from those in power in America of “fuck it let them die who cares.” These retirees have no connection to the decision made but they die anyway. America’s failures with covid, the Texas winter storm, removing eviction bans, the never-ending police violence again marginal communities, Haitian refugees are all modern-day analogues for a nuclear holocaust. The couple and especially the elderly man has a blind faith that the “power at be” will save them and that these leaders are getting things back in order. Everything that the man says to his wife is confused, misremembered, or useless information from a protect and survive leaflet. The help never comes. I see a modern day reading as the liberals “I believe in science refrain.” COP 26 is modern protect and survive leaflet (if you would like to know what protect and survive is go to YouTube there is a 20min long collection of the PSA’s). The death is the inevitable end of the next 3 years basically where we started or worse while we are told anodyne things about how Biden will save us just as the powers at be will save the elderly couple; we all know it’s coming, and furthermore we know it will be painful. We are being destroyed by people the general public barely knows, and we have no say in the outcome. Just like the bombs finally falling; but there is no radiation just poverty. Also, it’s mixed media animation claymation, drawn animation, and I think some miniatures. And, the title song is an original by Bowie! Let’s get this one over the line Superdelegates! If you want the Michael and Us boys brought to tears by a movie When the Wind Blows has to be your top contender.
